Compared to Suzhou, Wuxi, and Yangzhou, Zhenjiang in Jiangsu is a lesser-known tourist destination. However, this city, which dates back to the pre-Qin period and once served as the provincial capital of Jiangsu during the Republic of China era, boasts not only a long history but also a wealth of natural and cultural attractions. The "Three Hills and One Ferry" are among its most iconic highlights. On a sunny May day, a group of high school friends decided to visit Zhenjiang. With rain forecast for the next day, they condensed their two-day itinerary into one, embarking on a whirlwind tour of the "Three Hills and One Ferry." First stop: Jinshan (Golden Hill). Even from a distance, the Jinshan Temple is visible, nestled among lush greenery with its yellow walls and black tiles contrasting beautifully with the verdant trees. Stepping through the temple gate, the scent of incense and the sound of bells create a serene atmosphere, while the legend of the White Snake flooding Jinshan adds a mystical charm. From the hill’s summit, the Yangtze River stretches like a jade ribbon to the east, dotted with boats that paint a lively riverside scene. Next, a ferry ride took us to Jiaoshan (Coke Hill). This small island resembles a green gem floating on the Yangtze, with ancient trees towering overhead and stone inscriptions scattered throughout. The Dinghui Temple at the entrance exudes solemnity and antiquity, where monks chant sutras, offering a moment of peace and tranquility. Standing on Jiaoshan’s viewing platform, the river breeze washes away travel fatigue, leaving only awe for nature and reflection on history. The third stop: Beigushan (Northern Solid Hill), renowned as the "First Mountain Under Heaven." Climbing the stone steps, we encountered numerous historical relics. The flying eaves of Ganlu Temple glistened in the sunlight, as if recounting the legendary tale of Liu Bei’s marriage proposal. From the Beigu Tower, the panoramic view of the rolling Yangtze, undulating hills, and the city’s skyline blended into a magnificent landscape painting. The final destination: Xijin Ferry. This ancient district, with a thousand years of history, is the cultural heart of Zhenjiang. Its polished bluestone paths and well-preserved architecture from various eras—including the Guanyin Cave, Zhaoguan Stone Pagoda, former British Consulate, Life-Saving Association, and Li Gongpu’s former residence—tell the story of its long past. At the end of the street lies the ancient ferry site, once a vital crossing on the Yangtze, witnessing countless historical changes. As the sun set, its golden light shimmered on the river. Our group left Zhenjiang with cherished memories, having not only admired its natural beauty but also deeply felt its rich historical and cultural heritage.
