Duluth travel guide and discussion

Day 12 Duluth Lakewalk Minnesota's Duluth Lakewalk is a must-visit destination, offering a breathtaking experience akin to being by the ocean. The lake is so vast that it feels indistinguishable from the sea. To get there, you can take the Duluth express bus, which takes about three hours from Minneapolis via the highway. However, the bus schedule is limited, so plan ahead and purchase tickets in advance. We opted for the earliest bus at 8:20 AM to make a same-day round trip. The round-trip ticket costs $72 per person, plus a service fee of around $2. The journey itself was an adventure, with the weather shifting dramatically from stormy winds and rain to clear blue skies upon arrival. This change in weather made the trip worthwhile, ensuring we didn't waste the time and money spent on the tickets. As we stepped off the bus and approached the lake, we were greeted by the sight of the towering Arial Lift Bridge and the sound of crashing waves. Calling it a lake almost feels like an understatement—it’s so vast that it resembles the ocean, with no visible shoreline on the other side. The waves are enormous, surpassing those of many smaller seas, and the strong winds make it challenging to hold your phone steady for photos. Crossing the lift bridge and walking along the lakeside trail, the chilly wind and splashing water add to the immersive experience. The temperature here is at least four to five degrees lower than in Minneapolis, so be sure to dress warmly, bring a scarf, and choose a sunny day to fully enjoy this iconic destination. Walking along the trail toward the lighthouse feels like being in the middle of the ocean, with water crashing on both sides and the sound of waves echoing all around. The sensory experience—temperature, visuals, and sounds—truly makes you feel as though you’re at sea. Even at the lighthouse at the end of the trail, you can’t see Canada’s shore due to the lake’s immense size, but you can spot lakeside vacation apartments on the Duluth side. We continued along the lakeside path, circling the area near the vacation apartments. The sunny weather and soothing sound of the waves made for a relaxing and enjoyable stroll. Finally, we climbed uphill to Eager Park and Eager Tower, passing through a rose garden along the way. Driving up is recommended, as walking can be quite strenuous. From the tower, you can admire the expansive lake views we saw earlier in the day, as well as a large golf course on the other side. However, I think Hong Kong’s golf courses might be just as impressive. Descending the hill, we were treated to more stunning views of the lift bridge and the lake, accompanied by the refreshing sea breeze and warm sunlight—a perfect way to end the day.

This aquarium was excellent, with a good size that provided a decent amount of time to explore. Our child thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and it was enjoyable for us too. The pricing is reasonable and not overly expensive. The only downside was that the toy shop at the end was quite pricey.

#arrivalguide The 9-mile segment from Gooseberry Falls State Park to Split Rock Lighthouse State Park is the most scenic piece of the SHT’s north shore. I parked at Gooseberry’s upper lot ($7/day Minnesota state park sticker or $7 flat for non-residents, card at the booth), crossed the Upper, Middle and Lower Falls on bridges, and picked up the blue-blazed SHT heading northeast. The trail stays on the ridgeline above Lake Superior—birch and fir, then open cliff edges with 150 ft drops to the shoals. Five hours one way, 1,600 ft cumulative gain/loss, with three creek crossings (boardwalks in wet spots). Split Rock Lighthouse is a separate historic site ($8 admission, 9–5, card) but the SHT passes the lighthouse cliff 0.3 mile before the park office—you can photograph it free from outside the fence. I cached a water bottle at the 5-mile mark (Gooseberry River crossing) because the ridge has no springs in July; filter anything else. Bugs were light compared to the Gila. A mistake: I wore trail runners and the granite sections near Split Rock were greasy after a foggy night—approach shoes better. The 61 bus (Duluth–Grand Marais) runs past both ends seasonally if you want one-way. Discussion: does the SHT north shore beat the Appalachian ridgelines because the lake keeps the air moving, or is it a tamer walk with better views than effort?

I recently visited Duluth and truly experienced the charm of this lakeside city. First, the Aerial Lift Bridge is an iconic symbol of Duluth that you must see. Watching the massive structure slowly lift to let ships pass is fascinating and impressive. Especially in the evening when the lights turn on, walking along the riverbank creates a really wonderful atmosphere. There are also many great spots for taking photos. The Lighthouse is located at the end of the walking trail near the bridge, and the view where the lake meets the sky looked like a painting. Walking while listening to the sound of the waves clears your mind, and the cool breeze makes it perfect for a summer trip. Enger Park is a viewpoint where you can see all of Duluth at a glance. Climbing up to the observation deck at the top offers a refreshing view of the Aerial Lift Bridge and the lake, making you say “wow” naturally. The park itself is well-maintained, great for a stroll, and sitting leisurely on a bench while looking at the city and lake was truly healing. All three places are easy to reach by car and are conveniently located to visit in one day, so I highly recommend including them in your Duluth travel itinerary.

Georgia's largest fair, a two-hour drive from Duluth. There are numerous indoor exhibits showcasing Georgia's local specialties, culture, and history. The outdoor playground takes over ten minutes to walk from east to west. The venue is quite large, with different entrances. Many children had a blast. I even took the aerial tram to rest my legs on the way back. This annual event is a must-see every time you visit Georgia. #familytravel #localtravel #romanticgetaway #family-friendlyplace
