Mountainous Kefalonia, the largest of the Ionian group of islands, is a justifiably popular beach holiday destination. Although the island is dominated by Mount Ainos, and pine-clad hills that run down to the sea, it’s the sandy beach coves lapped by the turquoise waters that draw the most visitors. The best way to enjoy the top beaches on Kefallonia is to book your accommodation so that some of the many enchanting beaches are within easy reach. If you arrive by ferry at the capital, Argostoli, head south for the nearby beaches of Makris Gialos and Platis Gialos, which end at the tiny islet of Tourkopodaro. Makris Gialos has an area of sun lounges ideal for soaking up the sun, but there is jetski hire if you feel like being more active. The smaller Platis Gialos is quieter and less developed than its neighbour. Both beaches have bars and you will find a choice of excellent villa accommodation at nearby Lassi. Just a few kilometres further south, the tavernas and fine red sand bring visitors to Avithos. Naturists will find a clothing optional beach at adjoining Ligia. From the shore, you’ll see the tiny islet of Dias with its small church. It’s possible to take a short boat trip to the island and, depending on the season, the beaches could be deserted. The nearby village of Svoronata offers villa lodgings, tavernas and cafes. Backed by steep, white cliffs, the isolated beach at nearby Spartia is less developed and there is good accommodation. #decembertravel

The beautiful island offered a tranquil escape with its stunning landscapes. The crystal-clear waters and inviting beaches were perfect for relaxation and swimming. Exploring the charming villages and tasting the local cuisine added to the delightful experience. The warm hospitality of the people made the visit even more memorable and pleasant. Overall, the trip provided a rejuvenating and unforgettable holiday. I would love to go back for another week or month.

A special flavor is added by numerous goats that freely graze on the hills, creating a unique rural idyll. Here you can see rare caretta turtles, which swim into the island's bays. Figure 1-3 Myrtos Beach is likened to one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece. The sea here is really beautiful and its color is blue-green. Figure 4 Melissani Cave: The blue underground lake is a beautiful natural wonder. The boatman will sing for us when entering the blue cave. Melissani Cave was discovered in 1951. In Greek mythology, Melissani is the cave of the nymphs. Because the shepherd god Pan rejected her love, the nymph committed suicide in the cave, which is the origin of the cave's name. Figure 5-7 Drogarati Cave (natural stalactite cave) This vast stalactite cave, which is 65m long, 45m wide and 20m high, is also called a concert hall. | The beauty around the corner I "deliberately" arranged my trip to Kefalonia to be "casual," leaving plenty of time to "enjoy the leisure of doing nothing." The island exudes a lazy atmosphere everywhere, and the beauty around the corner makes me feel as happy as the famous attractions. This small town, nestled between mountains and the sea, boasts stunning natural landscapes and a rich historical and cultural atmosphere. The azure Aegean Sea surrounds the city, with white houses scattered across the hills, olive and cypress trees dotting the landscape, and the air filled with the fresh scents of sea breeze, earth, and pine. Everything felt so fresh and natural. I chose to stay at a small inn in the city center, where I could see the bustling Argostoli harbor from my window. Every morning, I enjoyed breakfast on the balcony, watching the busy harbor and the boats coming and going, feeling the unique vitality of the city. Breakfast was typically a simple yet delicious Greek meal, with fresh bread, olives, cheese, honey, and rich Greek coffee, providing me with ample energy for the day's adventures. The charm of Argostoli lies first and foremost in its beautiful harbor. As the heart of Kefalonia, the harbor is always bustling with various boats. I loved strolling along the harbor, admiring the different boats and feeling the unique energy of the port. In the evenings, I would sit at a café by the harbor, sipping Greek coffee and watching the sunset. The sunset's glow cast a golden-red hue over the Aegean Sea, making the distant mountains look even more majestic and magnificent. Besides the harbor, the city center of Argostoli is also full of charm. I wandered the streets, admiring the traditional Greek-style buildings and soaking in the rich historical and cultural atmosphere. Most of the buildings are white, with green vines climbing the walls and vibrant flowers blooming on the balconies, creating a lively and vibrant scene. The streets in the city center are not wide, but they are full of life, with small shops lining the roads, offering a wide variety of goods, from traditional handicrafts to local specialties. I often lingered in these shops, buying small gifts or simply chatting with the shop owners, feeling the warmth and friendliness of the locals. In Argostoli, I also visited Lake Drosos. This small lake in the city center has crystal-clear water, allowing you to see the sand and various aquatic plants at the bottom. I enjoyed walking by the lake, admiring the clear water and the beautiful scenery around it. There are also some cafés and restaurants by the lake, where I often sat, sipping Greek coffee and enjoying the lakeside view. Another highlight of Argostoli is its beautiful beaches. Although it doesn't have the long stretches of sandy beaches found on some islands, the beaches around Argostoli each have their own unique charm, with clear water and soft sand, perfect for swimming and sunbathing. I visited Makris Gialos, a beach not far from the city center, and enjoyed a wonderful day by the sea. In Argostoli, I also tasted many local delicacies. Fresh seafood, delicious Greek salads, and various Greek desserts left me with unforgettable memories. I frequently visited an old restaurant in the city center, where the dishes were all local specialties, fresh and delicious, and reasonably priced. The restaurant owner, a hospitable old man, always enthusiastically recommended various local dishes and patiently explained the history and culture of Kefalonia to me. During my days in Argostoli, I experienced the vitality and tranquility of Kefalonia. With its beautiful harbor, bustling city center, clear lake, and lovely beaches, Argostoli has become one of my most cherished memories. I will always remember the sunshine, the sea breeze, and the indescribable feeling of being moved. The vitality, history, and beauty of this place will be among my most precious travel memories. I look forward to returning here and experiencing this rare vitality and beauty once again. | Linardos Apartments in Assos Village, Kefalonia. If I can't live in the scenery, it doesn't count as a vacation for me. It took quite an effort to achieve the goal of 'staying in the most beautiful village on Kefalonia Island.' The best-equipped resort town, Fiskardo, didn't have a single hotel room available even three months in advance. This place called 'Linardos Apartments' only had a sea-view four-person apartment left, and cancellations were not allowed within 30 days before check-in. We couldn't hesitate and had to book immediately because, during the peak tourist season, even 2.5 months in advance, most scenic hotels or apartments in Assos Village are already booked. This time, I must highly recommend Linardos Apartments. We stayed in an apartment with 2 bedrooms and three beds, which could accommodate four people. The apartment was very cozy, and even three years later, I still remember that the bed was very comfortable. The kitchen was also well-equipped, and since we needed high temperatures to cook Chinese food, the electric stove had a high power output. The most satisfying part was that when you opened the door, you were greeted with a wonderful view. Having a meal with such poetic scenery, how could one not be happy? Haha, the picture below is actually just for show. At 7 PM, the Greek sun was still scorching. The gentle breeze in the morning made having breakfast on the terrace incredibly pleasant. Greek scenery + Chinese food = Mom's smiling face. Oh right, as a filial daughter, I was responsible for cooking, but my mom insisted on helping with washing dishes and cleaning up.

Assos is a small and charming village located 36 km north of Argostoli, the capital of Kefalonia. Today, it counts about one hundred inhabitants and is one of the most charming spots of the island. Dominated by the ruins of a 16th century Venetian castle, the village of Assos is built on a small peninsula reflecting a beautiful and warm atmosphere. The traditional architecture, the peaceful landscape and the pebbled beaches compose the natural beauty of Assos. A stroll around the narrow alleys reveals colorful houses with pink and white blooms, lovely paths and old churches. Little taverns perched on the quayside overlooking the bay attract most of the visitors. The visit to the castle requires a long walk amidst the olive tree forests until you reach an archway.
