Standing by the open doors, feeling the breeze, watching the bridge appear… one of those moments that reminds you why you travel in the first place. Here’s what you need to know 📌 Save for later:� At the time of our visit, the Kandy–Ella train wasn’t fully operational, so instead of the full route we did a shorter (but still stunning) section. Important tip: Once you arrive in Ella, head to the train station and book your ticket for the scenic train towards Nuwara Eliya or Kandy 🚂 This is one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic journeys! Day 7: Ella → Tea Country Catch the morning train from Ella, usually around 10:00. This route is famous for a reason — tea plantations, misty hills, bridges, villages and endless green views. If you enjoy hiking, get off near Nuwara Eliya and arrange a taxi to Norwood for a night in tea country. Stay tip: Traveller’s Villa is a great option if you’re planning to hike Stage 8 of the Pekoe Trail. The owner is an avid hiker and can help with drop-off and pick-up. Day 8: Pekoe Trail → Kitulgala → Kandy Start early and hike Stage 8 of the Pekoe Trail before the midday heat kicks in. The hike takes around 4–6 hours depending on your pace, and it’s a great way to see Sri Lanka beyond the usual tourist stops. Afterwards, head towards Kandy. Feeling adventurous? Add a whitewater rafting stop in Kitulgala on the way! It only takes about 1.5 hours and turns a transfer day into a proper adventure day 🌊 You’ll arrive in Kandy tired, but very happy! For example, from the resorts of Hikkaduwa or Unawatuna, it’s about a 4-hour drive to Ella, where the train departs. Sri Lanka is probably one of the countries I've visited where it's best to spend your time on the train. Not just because the coastal views and tea plantations outside the window are beautiful, but because the train itself is a part of life here. If your time is limited, make sure to save these two routes for the train👇 1️⃣ Colombo → Galle|Along the Indian Ocean 🌊 This coastal line is absolutely stunning, especially the stretch from Kollupitiya to Mount Lavinia, where half the journey runs almost right along the shore, with waves at your feet. And this is also the local commuter route. Morning trains carry workers into the city, with ridiculously frequent departures. Sri Lankan trains don’t close their doors, so you’ll see some incredible scenes— people hanging on the doors, standing on the footboards, the train cars almost “growing” (see photos 2 and 6). At that moment, you suddenly realize this isn’t a show, it’s everyday life. 2️⃣ Ella → Nuwara Eliya|Through the Tea Plantations 🍃 Another must-ride is the tea plantation line. The train slowly rocks through the mountains, passing one tea plantation after another, with curve after curve. Although it’s really slow— 60 kilometers takes three to four hours—it’s never boring. Outside the window, green flows by; inside the carriage, you hear locals chatting and laughing. Occasionally, you make eye contact, nod, or greet someone, and time just stretches out. We rented a car for our trip in Sri Lanka, but we specifically asked the driver to wait for us at the train’s final stop just to ride the train. Day 2: Hiking and Waterfalls 🥾 Morning: Little Adam’s Peak Hike (Easy, 1.5–2 hours round trip): Panoramic views of Ella Gap and surrounding valleys. You can head there for sunrise as I did as seen in the 10th photo, I woke up at 4am, had a short motorcycle ride to a car park, paid a small fee and walked 30 mins up to the summit. Stop by Flying Ravana Mega Zipline (optional) – great for a quick adrenaline rush on the way down. It isn’t just a zipline, they have swings, a pool and a bar if you just want to chill. 💧 Afternoon: Visit Diyaluma Falls: it’s about 1 hour from the town, I would recommend leaving before lunch and eat at Diyaluma Manusha Restaurant & Hotel when you arrive, the waterfall can be seen in photo 8. It’s super grand and an easy hike once you have ridden to the free car park at the top of the mountain. (Alternate option) Lunch near Ravana Zipline or at Cafe Chill again. Visit Ravana Falls: Beautiful and popular waterfall close to town. You can swim in the lower pools if conditions are safe. Optional: Visit Ravana’s Cave, tied to the Ramayana legend (moderate hike). 🍛 Evening: Dinner at Matey Hut – known for authentic Sri Lankan rice and curry. Day 3: Nine Arches Bridge and Tea Country 🌉 Early Morning: Walk to Nine Arches Bridge for sunrise (or time your visit for when the train passes). Magical photo opportunity. See cover photo and photo 9. 🍃 Mid-Morning: Visit a nearby tea plantation and factory – like Halpewatte Tea Factory (30 mins tuk-tuk from town). We saved this for Nuwara-Eliya but there are some gorgeous ones in Ella too, it depends if you have the energy for this after the early rise. 🍽 Afternoon: Attend a cooking class, photo 11. The one I went to was called Honey Bee Garden and I will do an entirely separate post about that as it was so amazing! 🎶 Evening: Explore live music or chill vibes at The Rainbow Café or Café UFO. Day 4: Ella Rock Adventure & Departure 🌄 Early Morning: Ella Rock Hike (Challenging, 4–5 hours round trip). Go early to avoid the heat and see a clearer sky. I made this mistake and went later, it was so hot and completely cloud covered. It still allowed for some amazing photos. See photos 2-6.
