Ella travel guide and discussion

See enough photos of Sri Lanka’s famous blue train and it is easy to assume that you need to ride all the way from Kandy to Ella. You don’t. If you want the tea country, misty hills, tiny stations and open-window views without spending most of the day on a train, the journey from Nanu Oya to Ella is the sweet spot. The full ride from Kandy to Ella usually takes around six to seven hours and can take longer when there are delays. It is worth considering if you enjoy long train journeys and have enough time. For a shorter ride filled with some of the finest scenery, Nanu Oya to Ella takes roughly three hours and is much easier to fit into a Sri Lanka itinerary. 🚆 Why start at Nanu Oya? Nuwara Eliya does not have its own railway station. The nearest one is Nanu Oya Railway Station, which can be reached by road from the town. Some people call this journey Nuwara Eliya to Ella, but the actual train ride begins at Nanu Oya. Soon after leaving the station, the train begins passing tea plantations, mist-covered mountains, forests, hillside villages and small railway stations. On a clear day, the views stretch far across the hills. When the mist rolls in, the same landscape feels quieter and completely different. The route also passes Pattipola, Sri Lanka’s highest railway station at approximately 6,225 feet above sea level. From there, the train continues through mountain stations such as Ohiya, Idalgashinna, Haputale and Bandarawela before reaching Ella. This railway was not originally built with travellers and cameras in mind. Railways were introduced to Sri Lanka in 1864 to carry coffee from the hill country to the port of Colombo. As the tea industry expanded, more tracks were built through the mountains. A railway once used to move crops and supplies has now become one of the country’s best-known travel experiences. Which class should you book? Second Class Reserved offers the best balance for this journey. Your seat is guaranteed, and depending on the train, the windows can be opened so you can enjoy the cool air and take clearer photos of the scenery. First Class is air-conditioned and more comfortable. Some carriages also have seats that can be rotated. However, the windows in most air-conditioned carriages are sealed, so it may feel less connected to the landscape outside. Third Class is the cheapest option and offers more of a local atmosphere. An unreserved ticket, however, may leave you standing for several hours when the train is crowded. Some services also have Third Class Reserved seats, so check the options carefully when booking. Which side has the best views? If you are travelling all the way from Kandy, the right-hand side is generally preferred before reaching Nanu Oya. After Nanu Oya, many travellers favour the left-hand side. For the shorter journey from Nanu Oya to Ella, try to get a window seat on the left if one is available. Still, there is no need to let the seating side worry you too much. The railway curves constantly through the mountains, so the views move from one side of the train to the other throughout the journey. How to reserve a ticket Reserved seats can be booked through the official Sri Lanka Railways online reservation system. Reservations open up to 30 days before the travel date, and a maximum of five seats can be booked in one transaction. Passport details are required for every passenger. If you are travelling between December and April, book as soon as reservations open because seats can sell out quickly. Train times may change because of weather, track repairs and operating conditions. Do not rely only on a departure time found in an old post. Check the official timetable again shortly before your journey. Want to cross the Nine Arch Bridge by train? A ticket from Kandy or Nanu Oya to Ella will not take you across the Nine Arch Bridge. The bridge is located after Ella on the railway line towards Demodara. To cross it by train, continue beyond Ella on a service heading towards Demodara or Badulla. This small detail is easy to miss when planning the journey. What should you bring? Carry drinking water, a few snacks and some cash. Food and drinks are sometimes sold by vendors who board at stations, but cash is usually needed. A power bank, tissues and hand sanitiser are also useful. There are toilets on the train, although using the facilities at the station before boarding may be more comfortable. Keep an eye on your phone, wallet and luggage when the carriage becomes crowded. Photos taken from an open train doorway may look impressive, but leaning far outside is not worth the risk. The train passes close to tunnel walls, trees and trackside signs, sometimes with very little warning. A photograph should never matter more than your safety. Three hours may sound like a long train ride while you are waiting at Nanu Oya. By the time Ella gets closer, it may feel surprisingly short. This is one of those journeys where arriving is not the part people remember most. It is the tea fields, the cool air coming through the window and the slow bends through Sri Lanka’s hills. #srilanka #srilankatravel #kandytoella #nanuoya #ellasrilanka #scenictrainride #traintravel #teacountry #hillcountry #travelsrilanka #asiatravel #railjourney #traveltips #tripmoments #exploresrilanka

#bucketlistdestinations Ella is one of those places I would put on a bucket list for the scenery alone. This part of Sri Lanka is all about green mountains, deep valleys and viewpoints where the landscape seems to continue forever. For me, the best way to experience it is to get above the town and see just how dramatic the hill country really is. There are several hikes around Ella, and each gives you a different perspective. From the higher viewpoints, you can see layers of mountains fading into the distance, tea plantations covering the hillsides and clouds moving between the peaks. That's what made Ella memorable for me. There isn't just one panorama you come to photograph and leave. The views keep changing as you walk, and even the same mountains can look completely different depending on the weather and time of day. Ella is popular now, but with scenery like this, I completely understand why. If you had to choose, what would make your bucket list first - tropical beaches or mountain panoramas like these? #Ella #SriLanka #SriLankaTravel #MountainViews #Hiking #AsiaTravel

Upon arriving in Ella, we had to walk up the hill to our hotel, which cost about $9 a night. It was a twenty-minute walk. After five hours of standing on the train, we naturally thought we'd just take a taxi. But when we got off at the station, we saw simply incredible beauty and decided to walk. It was amazing! The views were stunning, the air was fresh, the greenery was all around—and the fatigue was gone. As soon as we reached the hotel, we dropped off our bags and headed to Little Adam's Peak. It was absolutely beautiful! We took tons of photos and stopped and ate at a local cafe along the way. The climb is easy, even a child could do it, and the views of the tea plantations and mountains are stunning. Later, we went to the bridge where the trains pass—the very same Nine Arch Bridge. We took tons more photos and walked until evening. And by evening, the bridge was completely empty—there was no one there! We managed to take photos without the crowds of tourists. These were simply incredible emotions and memories. Ella was a real reward for us after the terrible train ride. If we'd known it was so beautiful here, maybe we wouldn't have been so upset during the trip. But everything worked out perfectly, and this day turned out to be one of the most memorable of the entire trip. What's next? In the next part, I'll tell you how we got from Ella to the coast—Tangalle, Mirissa, and Unawatuna. And also about our first impressions of the ocean! #ella #SriLanka

Sometimes the wildest journeys lead to the *most* magical spots, and this was absolutely one of those adventures! Our nighttime trip to Mahamevnawa Buddhist Monastery in Ella started out a little...chaotic 😅 Imagine bouncing along a pitch-black, crazy bumpy mountain road in a tuk-tuk—and then suddenly, *boom*, the tuk-tuk gives up on life. With no rides left, we just had to hike the rest of the way up, surrounded by nothing but darkness and stars. But trust me, every single step was 💯 worth it! When we finally made it, we were greeted by the sight of a glowing Buddhist temple lighting up the night—talk about a total *main character* moment! ✨ The monastery is perched high on the mountain, which means the views? Just unreal. You get sweeping panoramas of Ella, and the night sky is absolutely bursting with stars. If you’re looking for those peaceful, soulful vibes, this is *the* spot. I even got to meditate beside the local Buddhist monks—truly grounding and kinda life-changing. The whole atmosphere is so pure and calming, you can literally feel the stress just melt away. 💡 Insider Tips for Your Spiritual Adventure: · Respect the space: Absolutely no photography inside the temple (rules are rules!), but honestly, being screen-free lets you soak in those real, spiritual feels. · Flashlight = must! The path can get super dark and sketchy, so come prepared. · Be quiet and chill—this is a sacred place, and trust me, peaceful energy is the . 📍 Where To Go: Mahamevnawa Buddhist Monastery, Ella · Address: Ella – Wellawaya Road, Ella 90090, Sri Lanka · Opening Hours: Typically sunrise to late evening (best to visit at night for that glowing temple + epic stars combo!) #шриланка #travel #srilanka

After Kandy, we decided not to change drivers and continued our journey with our now-familiar Prodip. We arranged for him to take us from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya by tuk-tuk—it cost about $35. The ride was very long, about five hours, but we made stops at tea plantations and waterfalls. It was amazing! Along the way, Prodip told us a lot—about local life, tea, and traditions. Conversations like these make the journey truly special. 🏡 Nuwara Eliya: Guesthouse for $8 Upon arriving in Nuwara Eliya, we stayed in a small guesthouse, which cost only $8 per night. We were greeted with semolina pudding, bananas, and tea—a small gift, but a truly special one. We specifically chose this place near the railway so we could catch the train to Ella the next morning. In the evening, my husband and I simply strolled through the tea plantations. We stopped at a local village—just a few houses, but the children greeted us so joyfully! They were shouting, waving, and smiling. It was a very warm and genuine feeling. 🚂 Nuwara Eliya to Ella Train: The Trip's Main Disappointment Now, let's be honest about what went wrong. Early in the morning, we arrived at Nanu Oya station to board that famous train that travels through tea plantations to Ella. This stretch is considered one of the most beautiful in the world. And it turned out to be a terrible idea. The train was two hours late. Only three carriages arrived, and they were all already packed. We barely squeezed in. People helped others squeeze into the carriage—that was the only thing that saved us. Instead of the promised three hours, we traveled for almost five. And the whole time, we were standing! It was impossible to move or stir. It was terribly hot. And most importantly, we didn't get any views because we were standing in the crowd, staring at the backs of the people in front of us. That legendary route everyone dreams of turned into five hours of crushing, stuffy conditions. No beautiful photos, no views from the window—just people's backs and suitcases. Honestly, it was the biggest disappointment of the entire trip. #ella

The breathtaking view I absolutely had to see in Ella, a town in the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka 🚂🌿 As the name suggests, the Nine Arch Bridge is a brick railway bridge consisting of nine massive arches 🌉 Surrounded by lush greenery, the scenery looks like a scene straight out of a movie 🎞️ Located along a railway line that winds through mountains covered in tea plantations, trains still actually cross this bridge today 🚂 Completed around 1919, the Nine Arch Bridge was built during the British colonial era 🇬🇧 Legend has it that due to a shortage of steel, it was constructed using materials like stone and brick 📝 It’s incredible to think that trains are still running on a bridge built over 100 years ago 😳 The biggest highlight is definitely the moment the train crosses the bridge ✨ I actually took the train across the Nine Arch Bridge this time, and it was absolutely thrilling! With tea plantations and mountains stretching all around, the charm of this spot is that you can enjoy Ella’s stunning nature along with the bridge itself 🌿 While Sri Lanka is famous for its tea, this beautiful railway scenery is something you can only find here 🇱🇰 If you’re visiting Ella, this is a must-see spot you won’t want to miss 💛 📍 Demodara, Ella, Sri Lanka ⏰ Open 24 hours 💰 Free

We spent three weeks in Sri Lanka and used Sri Lanka Driver Hire for the entire trip. Our driver, Irham (Mohamed), was fantastic—he showed us both the popular tourist spots and some lesser-known gems. At our request, we dined at some very local cafes with Mohamed, which were all fantastic and made our adventure even more unique. As two not-so-active females unable to handle much climbing, he ensured we experienced as much as possible. For places his car couldn't reach, like the nine-arch bridge and the rock, he arranged tuk-tuks for us. He was consistently punctual and just a WhatsApp call away whenever we needed him. He also took care of our luggage when moving between hotels and snapped some great photos for us, sharing them via WhatsApp. Mohamed was incredibly knowledgeable about Sri Lanka, patiently answering all our questions and teaching us so much about the country. If we return to Sri Lanka, we wouldn’t hesitate to use Sri Lanka Driver Hire and Mohamed again.

Sri Lanka is one of those places where a single trip can pack in the ocean, mountains, jungles, tea plantations, and a scenic coastal train ride. But there are a few things you should probably know before you catch your flight. 🌴 1. Don't try to see the whole island in a week Sri Lanka looks small on a map, but the roads and travel times take way longer than you'd expect. It's much better to pick a few regions and actually enjoy them, rather than spending half your vacation stuck in a car. 🚂 2. The train isn't just for getting around Taking the train through the mountains and tea plantations is an adventure in itself. Just don't expect it to be fast: trains here often run late, but the incredible views totally make up for it. 🌊 3. Different coasts have different seasons This is a huge deal when planning your itinerary. When the season is winding down on the south and west coasts, the east coast might be absolutely perfect for a beach getaway. 🐘 4. Make time for nature Sigiriya, national parks, tea plantations, waterfalls, and turtles—Sri Lanka is so much more than just gorgeous beaches. 🍛 5. You have to try the local food Rice and curry, kottu, hoppers, fresh fruits, and coconuts. If you're a fan of bold, spicy flavors, you're going to love the food scene here. 💵 6. Always carry some cash Credit cards aren't accepted everywhere, especially in small cafes, local shops, and off-the-beaten-path areas. 🌿 7. Respect the environment Don't feed the wild animals, don't litter, and always follow the rules in the national parks. Nature is honestly one of the biggest reasons to visit Sri Lanka. ✨ But most importantly—don't try to make your trip absolutely perfect. Leave a couple of days wide open without a strict plan. Sometimes your favorite memory in Sri Lanka will be a random beach you stumbled upon, a tiny cafe, or a sunset you never even planned to see. 📌 Save this post before your trip—it'll definitely come in handy when mapping out your itinerary.

The past 12 days in Sri Lanka have been absolutely amazing! We managed to pack in so many activities, from sunrise hikes at Sigiriya Rock and Little Adam’s Peak to visits to waterfalls, scenic train rides, and thrilling safaris. It’s been an unforgettable couple of weeks. The trip was well-structured, with action-packed days at the start and relaxed beach days towards the end. Our guide Sameera was outstanding. He was always there to ensure everything ran smoothly and went above and beyond to accommodate any special requests. If you’re fortunate enough to have him as your guide, you’re in great hands! Our drivers, Anurudda and Morgan, were also fantastic, making sure we reached every destination safely and always meeting us with a warm smile each morning. The food in Sri Lanka was truly delicious! We got to enjoy a variety of flavorful local dishes and were definitely very well-fed throughout the trip. The group I traveled with was amazing too, comprised mostly of solo travelers. Everyone was incredibly friendly, and I feel so lucky to have shared this experience with such a wonderful group of people. If you’re considering it, you should absolutely book this trip. Sri Lanka is a stunning part of the world, and the people are some of the kindest I’ve ever met. You won’t regret visiting!

Sisters, learn from my painful lesson 😭! I trusted a local tuk-tuk driver’s “cheap private car” deal, but ended up taken to buy fake gems and eat at kickback restaurants, wasting 15,000 yuan for nothing! But to be fair, Sri Lanka really is God’s forgotten palette 🎨. The coastal train, highland tea plantations, wild elephants—every scene looks like an oil painting! Tearfully putting together this life-saving guide, just copy it for about 6,000 yuan per person and avoid the traps! 🏝️ Top 5 must-visit attractions, don’t miss any ① Sigiriya Lion Rock 🦁 The sky palace, the eighth wonder of the world. Climbing to the top offers a breathtaking jungle view, plus thousand-year-old frescoes on the cliff. Tickets cost US$30. It’s best to go right at 6:30 AM when it opens to avoid crowds and heat. Plan 2.5 hours and watch out for bees underfoot. ② Nanuoya-Ella tea garden train 🚂 The blue train runs through misty mountain tea plantations. Hanging out the window for photos, you can almost touch the tea leaves. Second-class tickets cost just 380 rupees (about 9 yuan), with fixed prices—don’t pay scalpers! The full trip takes 3 hours. Reserve a left-side seat early for the best views. ③ Yala National Park 🐆 A wild safari chasing Sri Lankan leopards, elephant herds, and crocodiles, just like Africa! Tickets plus jeep cost about US$110 per vehicle (can share with 4–6 people). Departure at 5 AM when animals are most active. The tour lasts 4–5 hours. Bring a telephoto lens for once-in-a-lifetime shots. ④ Galle Fort 🏰 Colonial charm meets Indian Ocean sunset. White walls, blue sea, lighthouse, and churches—every frame looks like a movie poster. Free entry. Spend 2 hours wandering. Go at 4 PM to watch the orange ocean sunset under the lighthouse—absolutely stunning. ⑤ Bentota mangroves 🛶 Take a boat through the water forest tunnel, see crocodiles and giant water lizards, and even touch baby crocs. The whole trip is amazing. Boat costs about 4,000 rupees (around 100 yuan). Sharing a boat saves money. The tour lasts 1.5 hours and is very natural. 📅 5-day essential itinerary Day 1: From the airport to Negombo, watch fishermen haul nets at the fish market, then private car to Sigiriya. Climb Lion Rock in the afternoon. The golden rock at sunset is breathtaking. Stay in Sigiriya. Day 2: Early start to Yala. Jeep safari chasing leopards and elephants. In the afternoon, relax with an Ayurvedic spa by the lake. Stay near Yala. Day 3: Drive to Nuwara Eliya, taste Ceylon black tea at the tea plantation, then take the tea garden train. Hang out the window for 3 hours of epic views to Ella. Stay in Ella. Day 4: Head south to Galle. City walk in the fort with afternoon tea. Watch the Indian Ocean sunset at dusk. Have big crab at a Chinese restaurant. Stay in Galle or nearby beach. Day 5: Morning mangrove exploration in Bentota. Then take the sea train like in Spirited Away back to Colombo. Buy Ceylon tea in the city as a gift. Fly out at night. 🦞 Food list locked down to these 4 must-tries Lagoon crab: Garlic crab at Ministry of Crab in Colombo, super fresh and sweet meat. Costs about 300 yuan per person but worth it; Kottu rotti: Stir-fried flatbread, the soul of street food with a smoky aroma; Watalappam: Coconut milk and honey pudding, sweet but not greasy; Golden coconut: Freshly cut roadside for just 50 rupees, a refreshing summer treat. After drinking, split it open to eat the coconut meat—so satisfying! 💰 Budget per person (about 6,000 yuan) Round-trip direct flights from many cities nationwide including tax about 2,500 yuan, 4 nights in guesthouses or 3-star shared rooms about 600 yuan per person (Sri Lanka accommodation is super cheap!), private 7-seat car shared by 4 people about 600 yuan per person, Tickets and safari about 1,000 yuan, food including seafood and milk tea about 1,500 yuan. Don’t trust roadside tuk-tuks for private cars. Official travel agencies charge about 400–500 yuan per day for a 7-seat car, safe and worry-free. If taken shopping forcibly, you can complain directly! ⚠️ Life-saving tips to remember Negotiate tuk-tuk fares from 500 rupees down to 100. City rides usually don’t exceed 200; Hold on tight on the hanging train. It slows down but people fall every year—this is no joke; Monkeys at Lion Rock in the afternoon will steal bags. Don’t bring plastic bags or snacks; Buy gems only at Colombo’s National Gem Bureau certified stores. Roadside “local shops” sell glass fillers; Bring sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses. It’s cold in the tea plantation mountains in the morning and evening, so bring a jacket. Wear dark clothes on the Yala safari; light colors get too hot. Wear a mask to protect from dust all the way! Don’t be as foolish as I was, looking for rides locally and getting ripped off to heartbreak! Bookmark this guide and tag the sisters who want to go to the world’s end together. You really can just go! ✈️🌺

The Ella train ride really is that beautiful 💚 The reality is that both the train and Nine Arches Bridget get crowded, and over in a blink, yet somehow it’s still magical. Standing by the open doors, feeling the breeze, watching the bridge appear… one of those moments that reminds you why you travel in the first place. Here’s what you need to know 📌 Save for later: At the time of our visit, the Kandy–Ella train wasn’t fully operational, so instead of the full route we did a shorter (but still stunning) section. We took a taxi from Ella to Haputale, then caught the train back towards Ella. This is also perfect way to experience the scenery without spending the whole day on the train. Helpful guide: ✨ Trains run only a few times a day — check schedules at Ella station when you arrive ✨ Sit/stand near the doors for photos (best shots are on curves) ✨ Facing Ella from Kandy? Be on the left side for the Nine Arches Bridge After you’ve experienced the ride yourself, I highly recommend heading to the Nine Arches Bridge to watch the train pass from the outside. There are a few charming cafés nearby, perfect for relaxing with a drink while taking in the view 😍 What’s the most scenic train ride you’ve done? Sri Lanka Itinerary | Sri Lanka Travel Advice | Sri Lanka Best Places Follow Gem Diaries for more travel tips, guides, and hidden gems 🌍🧳

Sri Lanka's distinctive character is formed not only by its rich historical heritage and vast tea plantations, but also by its unique cuisine. In search of culinary traditions and to experience the island's main gastronomic symbol—traditional rice and curry—we stopped for lunch at the atmospheric Café Chill. The flavor "builder" of Rice and Curry is comprised of: · Pol Sambol—a classic Sri Lankan condiment made from freshly grated coconut, red onion, chili pepper, and lime juice. · Lentil Curry (Dhal Curry / Parippu)—one of the most popular side dishes in Sri Lanka, made with red lentils simmered in coconut milk with turmeric and mustard seeds. · Chicken Curry (Kukul Mas Curry)—dark brown, thick, and aromatic. Its secret lies in deep-roasted spices, which impart a rich color and a moderate heat. Café Chill adds an aesthetic touch to tradition with a garnish of nasturtium flowers and greenery. The use of a banana leaf as a base is a long-standing tradition symbolizing hospitality. Along with national cuisine, Café Chill's menu offers a European alternative. 📍 Café Chill, Ella's main street. Sri Lanka: A Pinterest Expectation or My Big Disappointment? Sri Lanka is often desperately romanticized. Juicy Pinterest boards, aesthetically pleasing Instagram reels promise eternal summer: warm ocean, perfect surfing, lush tropical nature, delicious food, and a carefree life for next to nothing. The image sells the dream. But for some reason, none of these enthusiastic bloggers write about the total devastation and utter unsuitability of this country, not just for living, but even for a comfortable winter. Well, it's time to take off the rose-colored glasses. Let's get acquainted. My name is Amor, I'm the founder of my own travel agency and a seasoned traveler. I've traveled to over 27 countries, and it's quite difficult to surprise or frighten me with Spartan conditions. As part of our Asian wintering trip, my group and I decided to go to Sri Lanka to discover a new, seemingly fantastic and exotic country. We arrived at the very beginning of the season, in January. The weather was stunning. But that's where the fairy tale ended, and the harsh Sri Lankan way of life began. The capital, bureaucracy, and fruit worth gold The first thing you encounter upon arriving in Colombo is the local airport. It's in a frankly deplorable state. As someone who has seen a lot, I turn a blind eye to it, but the capital immediately reveals the real state of affairs in the country. I want to immediately make an important remark about the local financial realities. On the very first day, we decided to exchange money and see how official exchange offices in the capital work—it's always interesting to compare such things in different countries. Using Google Maps, we found an exchange office, which turned out to be a bank branch. The result: it took us 30 minutes to exchange $100. We ran around with papers, filled out endless forms, signed signatures, and waited for them to scan our passports. It was absolutely surreal. We never used any official institutions again, exchanging currency exclusively with local money changers or pawnshops. The streets in central Colombo are terribly dirty. Finding a decent place to eat is a real challenge. The only decent grocery shopping you can do is at the local Spar, but be prepared for a shock: in this "beautiful exotic country," any fruit will cost you a pretty penny. How about a kilogram of oranges for almost 1,000 rubles? And it's not just the citrus fruits. The country grows practically nothing except tea and rice (and only in the traditional way). All food products, including fruit, are imported. Compared to any other Southeast Asian country, where ripe fruit lies on every corner for next to nothing, the situation in Sri Lanka seems like a gastronomic hell. Sri Lankans simply don't like or want to do anything. And they don't even try to appear neat. Mentality and "Soviet Luxury" I understand that comparing Sri Lanka to developed Asia might not be entirely accurate. I'm a very friendly and open person, and I've even managed to make a few local friends here, but this is a huge exception to the rule. Despite my prior preparation and extensive observation, I was shocked by the local mentality. The main goal of most Sri Lankans is to squeeze as much money out of tourists as possible and rip them off at the first opportunity. Even the shrewd traders in Turkish bazaars can't compare to their level of brazenness. In Colombo, the only island of relative paradise we found was the famous hotel where Chekhov once stayed. But even it today is a dilapidated monument to "Soviet luxury." They could charge less for their rooms. However, this applies to all real estate on the island: any accommodation here is completely unreasonably priced, with no hint of balance between price and quality. South of the Island: Surfing, Smoothies, and Country Melancholy We then headed south. We biked almost the entire south coast, and it's worth noting that the top surf spots are truly magnificent. · Ocean: Perfectly warm. Swimming there, catching lineups and green waves is pure pleasure. At these moments, you truly feel like Cody from the cartoon "Catch a Wave!", even if you're riding the foam at a snail's pace. · Surfing: Board rentals are cheap, and learning to stand on one is easy if you're at least somewhat athletic and trainable. · Food: There are tons of cute cafes scattered along the coast. If you search, you can find good food. However, after visiting most of the top spots, I'd only single out two or three places as truly good (the rest are downright mediocre). The local smoothie bowls are an absolute must-have. But that's where the south's advantages end. The infrastructure outside the tourist cafes is depressing. The only shop in the entire village is dirty, smelly, and repulsive. I'm not the most discerning traveler; I've stayed in foreign countries without even an overnight stay, and I can put up with a lot. But some things are tolerable, and some are repulsive. These shops fall into the latter category. I dreamed of never setting foot in them again. The restaurant prices are exorbitant: a consistent 1,500-2,000 rubles per person for a single meal. Accommodation in all the spots is rundown and incredibly expensive. Good service in Sri Lanka will only be found in those rare, cool cafes and at the surfboard rental point. Result: To go or not to go? It's definitely worth renting a bike and exploring the island. The nature outside the cities is incredibly beautiful. Galle is a pleasant colonial town, and Ella is a very pretty place in the mountains. My ideal Sri Lankan day: a smoothie bowl in the morning and a surfing afternoon. It's pure joy. But if you stay here longer than two weeks, you'll slowly start to fade from the surroundings. Sure, downshifters and hippies might appreciate this vibe (though I partially share this philosophy myself), but I've come to a hard conclusion: 14 days in Sri Lanka is the limit. Purely for the sake of surfing, surfing, and more surfing. The thought of living and working there remotely for a little longer gives me a panic attack. Would I go back? Yes. When I'm completely tired of everything mundane, but only for the surfing and provided I'm mentally prepared for the poverty, dirt, and lack of service. Should you visit this country? Definitely. If only to feel like a master of the waves and, most importantly, to return and understand: where you live now, everything is quite good. #srilanka

Ravana Falls is formed by the Kirinda Oya River and is considered one of the widest on the island. Interestingly, the color of the water and rocks here constantly changes. In the morning, the rocks appear almost black, and at sunset, they are copper-colored. But the 25-meter cascade of this waterfall is more than just a beautiful natural phenomenon; it is a place where Sri Lankan epic poetry comes to life. According to the Ramayana (an ancient epic inextricably linked with the island's history), it was here, in a secret cave, that King Ravana hid the beautiful Sita, the wife of Prince Rama. In Sri Lankan culture, Ravana is revered as a great scholar, a medical expert, a talented musician, and a wise ruler. His image on the island is a symbol of wisdom and power, which is why many attractions are associated with his name. Pictured 6 is a statue of King Ravana from the local adventure park, Flying Ravana. Two views of the waterfall: 1. From the base: The waterfall is located just 6 km from Ella, right next to the highway (photos 1, 2, and 3), but is often crowded with tourists during the day. 2. From a bird's eye view: Ravana Falls is clearly visible from the summit of Little Adam's Peak, a place with incredibly beautiful mountain panoramas. Photos 4 and 5 (in the center, in the distance) show the view of the waterfall from this summit. The trail to Little Adam's Peak begins in the eastern part of Ella. The trail passes by the Flying Ravana Adventure Park (photo 7). Ravana Cave. The trail to the cave begins approximately 2 km from the waterfall toward Ella; the landmark is the temple. From here, about 700 steps lead to the legendary grotto. The waterfall is not visible from the cave entrance, but a stunning panorama of Ella's mountain gorge opens up. It is believed that this cave was once part of a vast network of underground tunnels. 📍 Sri Lanka, Ella, Uva Province. From the summit of Little Adam's Peak, an incredible panorama unfolds: on one side are the sheer cliffs of Ella Rock, and on the other, endless valleys and the Ravana Waterfall (photo 2) far below. However, the mountains of Sri Lanka offer more than just beautiful landscapes; they are a place where ancient myths and legends come to life. In Sinhalese, the mountain is called Punchi Sri Pada, which literally translates to "Little Sacred Footprint." Legend and History of the Name. The name Sri Pada means "Sacred Footprint." According to ancient tales, the first humans descended upon Sri Lanka, using the mountain ranges as giant stepping stones. It is believed that Adam stood on the summit of the "Great" Adam's Peak in the Ratnapura region, where a depression shaped like a human footprint actually exists in the rock. The silhouette of the mountain in Ella is a miniature replica of Adam's Peak in Ratnapura, which is how it earned the name "Little" Adam's Peak. The Path to the Summit Unlike the main Adam's Peak, which requires conquering 5,500 steep steps, the hike here is fairly easy and takes only about 30 to 40 minutes. The trail to the top begins in the eastern part of Ella, passing by the 98 Acres Resort and the Flying Ravana Adventure Park (photo 5). Photo 6 features a statue of King Ravana, the park's namesake. He was the legendary ruler of ancient Lanka and a key figure in the epic Ramayana. In these tales, he is depicted as a powerful king, a skilled warrior, and a brilliant scholar of his time. 📍 Sri Lanka, Ella, Uva Province. Inst: @iiuliia3107 travel
