These animals are absolutely incredible to see in the wild! My trip started before sunrise, the driver collected me from Medan city and drove to the jungle. The driver is well versed with google translate and is a very helpful, thoughtful and friendly person! Arriving at the meeting point, I waited 10minutes for other people to arrive and join the trek. We were given a lot of information about what to expect. My guides were Darabi and Haikal. These two gentlemen are funny, entertaining and very knowledgeable! They prepared lunch and we ate in the middle of the jungle, fried rice with egg and a lot of fruit. We saw about 7 orangutans and a few monkeys. Medan, the bustling capital of North Sumatra, proved to be more than just a gateway; it was a vibrant tapestry of history, culture, and, most notably, incredible food. My trip here was a captivating journey that stretched from the city’s colonial-era architecture to the breathtaking natural wonders of the highlands. The city itself, a melting pot of Malay, Batak, Javanese, Chinese, and Indian influences, is a fascinating place to explore. Architectural gems like the majestic Maimun Palace and the intricate Great Mosque of Medan (Masjid Raya Al-Mashun) stand as proud testaments to its royal and religious history. A particular highlight was the Tjong A Fie Mansion, a beautifully preserved house of a prominent Chinese merchant, which offers a rich glimpse into the city's past and its multicultural roots. Wandering through these sites, you truly feel the layered history of the region. However, no trip to Medan is complete without venturing into the surrounding natural beauty. The main destination for me was the spectacular Lake Toba, the world's largest volcanic crater lake. The drive up to the highlands, with winding roads and lush scenery, was an experience in itself. The sheer scale and tranquility of Lake Toba, especially on the ferry ride over to Samosir Island, is absolutely mesmerizing. Samosir is the cultural heart of the Batak Toba people, and exploring traditional Batak villages like Tomok, with its ancient stone tombs and unique architecture, was a deeply enriching cultural experience. The highlands near Berastagi also offered their own charms. A visit to the towering Sipiso-Piso Waterfall, plunging into the northern edge of Lake Toba, provided spectacular views. The fresh air and cool climate of Berastagi, known for its vibrant fruit and vegetable market, were a welcome contrast to the city heat. Finally, the food in Medan deserves its own review. This city is a culinary paradise! From the famous creamy Soto Medan (coconut milk-based soup) the intense flavors of Batak cuisine and, of course, the city's obsession with durian, every meal was an adventure. Dining at local spots and the busy night markets was arguably one of the best parts of the trip, a true taste of local life. While traffic in the city can be challenging, the warmth of the North Sumatran people, the stunning landscapes, and the unforgettable flavors make this trip an absolute must. Medan and its surrounds offer a perfect blend of historical sightseeing and natural exploration. It was an enriching and incredibly memorable experience that I would highly recommend to any traveler.

Trekking through the Sumatran jungle was an absolutely unforgettable adventure — the kind that sticks with you forever. From the moment we stepped into the dense, green wilderness, it felt like entering another world. The air was thick with humidity and alive with the sounds of nature: chirping birds, buzzing insects, and the occasional distant call of wild animals. Towering trees formed a canopy above us, letting in scattered rays of sunlight that danced on the forest floor. Every step deeper into the jungle felt like peeling back a layer of a hidden world. But the highlight, without a doubt, was encountering wild orangutans. Seeing them in their natural habitat was nothing short of magical. These incredible creatures, so intelligent and graceful, were just lounging in the treetops or swinging effortlessly from branch to branch. One of them even paused to watch us for a while — curious, calm, almost like it knew we were there in awe of it. It’s humbling to be that close to such a powerful yet gentle animal, and it reminded us how vital it is to protect their home. The trek itself was challenging at times — steep trails, muddy paths, and the ever-present buzz of adventure in the air — but every drop of sweat was worth it. There’s something raw and exhilarating about being out there, relying on your instincts and soaking in nature in its purest form. It wasn’t just a hike; it was a journey into the wild heart of the world. And seeing orangutans in the wild? That was the soul-stirring, once-in-a-lifetime moment that made it all absolutely epic.

To enter the location is in the same direction as the pamah cottage and there are lots of toilets but unfortunately the water sometimes runs out. There is also a river flowing around here so you can play in the river. The river is also not deep so it is safe if you bring children without being afraid to bathe there. During my visit to Tugu Monas in Jakarta, I arrived by bus, which was quite convenient as there’s a nearby bus stop that made getting there easy. Once I arrived, I noticed that there are several gates to enter the area, so it's good to check which gate is closest depending on where you're coming from. I visited on a day when there weren’t too many tourists around, making it a very pleasant and peaceful experience. The spacious grounds around the monument allowed for a relaxing walk, and I didn’t feel crowded at all. For those who buy tickets to enter the monument, they provide a buggy service to help you get to the entrance, which I found to be a nice convenience. Although I didn’t go up to the top of the monument, I learned that the tip of the tower is made out of gold, which adds an interesting touch to its historical significance. Overall, my visit to Tugu Monas was a smooth and enjoyable experience, with a nice blend of history and convenience for tourists.
