Entrance is free (no day-use fee), and the trailhead has a parking lot (free, but fills by 9 am on weekends). The trail is rocky, with some steep sections and a few stream crossings—I wore hiking boots and brought trekking poles. I carried 1.5 liters of water; there’s a water fountain at the nearby campground, but not on the trail. A park ranger told me the falls are best after rain—“the moss glows when the water hits it.” Kindness beat: a local family shared their picnic lunch and told me to visit the “Blue Ridge Summit” (a nearby overlook)—“the moss there is the color of the sky.” My take: Cunningham Falls is a reminder that “small” waterfalls can be just as beautiful as big ones. 🔥Checked in American National Parks: 3/100 Driving from Gettysburg Park to Monocacy Park, you will pass through Catoctin Mountain Park, which is great for hiking when the weather is nice. The park consists of a state park and a national park, established during the Great Depression in 1930, and the mountain area once had steel mills and breweries. Turn right off the highway exit to enter the mountain area, where the signal is decent, so there's no need to download Google offline maps in advance. You can set your destination directly to Catoctin Mountain Park Visitor Center, where there is a larger parking lot. At the visitor center, you can get a trail map for hiking, and there is also a small exhibition hall. On the way to the visitor center, you will pass by a small waterfall and lake area, and the walking distance is not too long. There are mainly 2 trails starting from the visitor center. One is the 0.6-mile Blue Blazes Whiskey, a round trip of about half an hour, which is a relatively simple trail where you can see a reconstructed prototype of the distillery, and it's not difficult to walk.
