#easytravelpost The Harz Mountains feel like a secret even Germans forget. I drove to Torfhaus (elevation 815 m, parking 5 EUR/day, card accepted) or took bus 830 from Goslar (45 min, 4.50 EUR). The “cliff mossy moor walk” is the Goetheweg to the Brocken plateau, but I skipped the summit crowds and took the Torfhaus–Königskrug moor trail instead—14 km, 4 h, +380 m. The first 3 km cut through the Goethe Moor, a raised bog where sphagnum moss forms hummocks tall enough to trip over, and the “cliff” is a series of granite outcrops (the Königskrug Felsen) where moss drips from overhangs like green curtains. I wore waterproof boots (essential—moss hides ankle-deep water), carried 1.5 L of water (no sources on the moor), and stopped at the Königskrug hut for a Harzer Käsesandwich (7.50 EUR, cash only). The moss here is a carbon sink—spongy, acidic, and home to sundews that eat insects. My mistake: I tried to shortcut across the bog and sank to my knees; a hiker pulled me out with his trekking pole. The Harz National Park requires you to stay on the wooden boardwalks in bog sections—deviate, and you’ll damage 100-year-old moss. A ranger told me, “The moor doesn’t forgive footsteps; it remembers them for decades.” Is a bog that fragile better left un-walked, or does the boardwalk let us love it without killing it?

Wernigerode is located in the northern foothills of the Harz Mountains in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, about 90 kilometers from the state capital Magdeburg and about 35 kilometers from Goslar.
