Guangling travel guide and discussion

Travel Tips 1. Transportation: * Private car (highly recommended): Pin "Guangling Shengquan Temple". Driving from downtown Datong takes about 2 hours. The final stretch is a narrow, zigzagging mountain road. An experienced driver is a must. • Public transit: Take a bus from Datong Station to the district of Guangling, then catch a taxi/charter a car to the temple (around 30 minutes). However, finding a ride back might be tough. We recommend getting the phone number of your driver. 2. Sightseeing Route: We recommend walking "from top to bottom". Have your driver drop you off at the highest viewpoint to take panoramic shots of the entire temple alongside the wind farm. Then, slowly make your way down the stone steps along the cliff (the stairs are quite steep and narrow, but there are chains to hold onto the whole way). 3. Entrance Fee: Currently "Free!" (no tickets or shuttle fees), which is an absolute steal given the breathtaking beauty you get to see. 4. Preparation: · Shoes: Make sure to wear sneakers with good traction, as the stone stairs are quite steep and slippery. · Camera: Bring a wide-angle lens to capture sweeping views of the cliff, and a zoom lens to focus on the details of the wooden beams and ancient murals. · Drinking Water: There are no shops along the trail, so be sure to bring your own water with you. Conclusion: If you're into hidden gems and love raw, unpolished history, this place is incredible. Rating it a

Arriving in Guangling in late September, there's already a chill in the air in the mornings and evenings; a light jacket is just right for the county town. But as the car climbs toward the ridge of Dianding Mountain, that same jacket won't be enough—the wind cuts across, carrying a biting cold. Guangling is located at the upper reaches of the Huliu River, a tributary of the Sanggan River, at the eastern end of the Hengshan Mountains. To the north is Datong, and to the east, over the mountains, is Yuxian in Hebei Province. Autumn sees little rain, and the sky is crystal clear. It's warm in the sun during the day, but it cools down as soon as the sun sets, making a single day feel like two seasons. It's a drive of just over an hour from Datong via the expressway; the roads are smooth, making for an easy road trip. There is no direct high-speed rail; if taking the train, you'll likely need to go to Datong or Yuxian first and then transfer—be sure to check the schedules and times before you depart. The county town itself is small, and Shuishentang is located in the south of the town, within walking distance. Shuishentang is a pleasant surprise. Located by the Huliu River in the south of the town, a circle of springs bubbles up from the ground, forming a small lake. A temple complex stands on an island in the center, surrounded by reeds. In autumn, the reed plumes turn white and rustle loudly when the wind blows. The springs are dense, and the water remains clear year-round, rarely freezing even in winter; locals use it as a place for a casual stroll. The temple features old architecture with the original painted beams still intact. It doesn't get many visitors, so a quiet walk around takes about half an hour. Whether tickets are required and the cost should be based on the notice posted at the entrance. In the afternoon, I went to see Guangling paper-cutting. This place is famous for its paper-cutting, a craft passed down for generations locally. Most are cut with a knife, featuring vibrant colors and layered dyeing—quite different from the monochrome window flowers found in many other places. There are shops and small workshops in the county town where you can watch the artists at work and pick out a few pieces to take home. Prices are based on size and level of detail; small pieces cost a few yuan, while larger ones can range from tens to hundreds of yuan, so have a budget in mind before you start browsing. If you want to buy something exquisite, ask whether it is hand-cut or machine-pressed, as there is a significant price difference between the two. The next day, I headed up to Dianding Mountain. This meadow is located at a high altitude of over 2,000 meters south of Guangling. You can drive near the ridge and walk the rest of the way. By October, the grass has turned completely yellow, stretching out into the distance, one patch after another. The sky feels low, the clouds are close, and the wind is so strong that you have to lean in to talk to each other. Wind turbines stand on the ridge, turning slowly, and the meadow seems endless—many people find angles for photos there. There aren't many trees on the mountain, so the view is wide open; if you're lucky, you can see layers of mountain silhouettes in the distance. The temperature difference between morning and evening is significant, so you can't have too many thick jackets. Choose shoes with good grip, as some parts of the mountain path are gravel. The meadow is largely undeveloped with few shops, so bring your own water and food. South of the county, there is also a canyon called Baiyangyu. A stream flows continuously along the bottom of the valley, and both banks are covered in dense forest. In autumn, the leaves change color in layers, making for a shaded walk. It's in a different direction from Dianding Mountain, so those who enjoy hiking can set aside a separate day for it. This area is less developed, and the roads and signage are average, so it's safer to go with a companion and head down the mountain before dark. Dining and accommodation are simple. Staying in the county town is more convenient, with hotels ranging from over 100 to over 200 yuan, offering decent conditions. If you prefer peace and quiet, there are some farm stays in the south of the town and at the foot of Dianding Mountain; just be sure to negotiate the price upon arrival. For food, look for two things: Guangling millet porridge is fragrant, and dried tofu is a famous local specialty that can be served cold or stir-fried. There are also yellow rice cakes (yougao), oat noodles, and lamb. The yellow rice cakes are best eaten hot. The local cooking style tends to be salty, and you can get a full meal for about 30–40 yuan per person. Dianding Mountain is at a high altitude, and the weather changes quickly. Check the forecast before heading up, and don't force your way up on rainy or foggy days. The signal on the mountain isn't always stable, so download offline maps for navigation in advance. Shuishentang and Dianding Mountain are far apart, so it's a bit rushed to visit both in one day; splitting them into two days is more relaxed. If you have extra time, you can combine Guangling with a trip to Hunyuan, connecting to the Hengshan and Hanging Temple route to the east, and then heading north back to Datong. Driving in autumn, the poplar forests along the way turn yellow even earlier than those in the scenic spots. Before leaving, I chatted with the owner of the farm stay. He said the grass in the meadow would only stay yellow for a little while longer. If you want to see it fully yellow, come in early to mid-October; by the end of the month, there will only be withered grass left. The county town is usually not congested, and if you visit off-peak, you basically won't need to wait in line.

Visit four ancient architectural sites in Jianxi Village in one trip: Shuishen Hall, Shengquan Temple, and Jianxi Village—all three are Major Historical and Cultural Sites Protected at the National Level—plus Anjian Temple, which is a provincial-level protected site. Anjian Temple is not usually open to the public, and the custodian guarding the temple is just an ordinary farmer from the village. I tried calling the contact number left on the temple gate wall, and to my surprise, he made a special trip to open the temple doors for me. He is full of passion for the ancient murals inside the temple, recounting every detail, his words filled with the sincerity of a guardian. Many magnificent historical sites do not necessarily rely solely on distant fame. It is precisely because of such ordinary people silently standing guard, watching over the old houses and murals day after day, that these remnants of time are preserved and these weathered ancient buildings are allowed to endure. Traveling through Northern Shanxi in search of antiquity, I am often moved by such moments. Grand history touches the human world through this simple persistence. And it is this dedication of countless ordinary people that gives profound meaning to the ever-changing flow of time. Ancient buildings are silent, but their guardians have heart.

Guangling County in Datong, Yunzhou, is home to a super niche, hidden gem route✨ I visited 4 historical sites in one go during the National Day holiday, and each one was a delightful surprise! 📍Jianxi Village (National Heritage Site) 📍Shuishen Hall (National Heritage Site) 📍Shengquan Temple (National Heritage Site) 📍Anjian Temple (Provincial Heritage Site)

Stepping into the main hall, I was instantly struck with awe. ✨ This set of Eight Great Wisdom Kings sculptures carries the unique, rugged spirit of the Liao and Jin Khitan dynasties, delivering maximum visual impact. The multi-armed Wisdom Kings glare with wide, angry eyes, their muscular forms radiating tension. With fangs bared and faces contorted in rage, their expressions are fierce and majestic, with every inch of muscle brimming with power. Whether wielding weapons or forming mudras, their countless arms stretch out in layers, imposing and aggressive, as if they are about to break through the walls at any moment. Beside them, the Bodhisattvas and guardian deities offer a gentle, serene contrast. Their crowns are intricate and ornate, while the remnants of gold leaf and mottled paint, weathered by centuries, show the marks of time in every crack of the lacquer. Fierce, wrathful visages and compassionate, solemn countenances—one hard, one soft—meet within the same hall. The four walls of the hall are covered in ancient murals, and the painted beams remain brilliant. Free from the artificial look of over-restoration, the hall retains the weathered, authentic appearance polished by time. Liao and Jin craftsmen perfectly captured the bold, martial spirit of the Khitan people, solidifying it forever in these clay sculptures. In their wrathful gazes lies the power of faith from a thousand years ago. Standing before the statues, you can truly appreciate the masterful level of ancient craftsmanship. Unlike the gentle, delicate sculptures of Jiangnan, these embody the unique, majestic wildness of the North—a sight that leaves you stirred long after you leave. 📝 Tips for visiting historical sites ▪️ View them up close to appreciate the Wisdom Kings' facial expressions, musculature, and multi-armed gestures—the details are incredible. ▪️ The hall is dimly lit; lower the exposure when taking photos to better capture the atmospheric feel of the ancient sculptures. ▪️ Please do not touch the statues; show respect for these preserved ancient treasures.

Guangling is a severely underrated "Jiangnan of the North" in northern Shanxi. It's uncrowded, beautiful, and almost all core attractions are free. With a budget of CNY 1,500, you can enjoy a very relaxed trip here and even save quite a bit. Note that August–September is the flood season, with frequent showers, humidity, and many mosquitoes, so it's best to avoid this time. The best times to visit are spring (April–June) and autumn (October–November). 🗓️ Itinerary Suggestions: Ancient Architecture, Intangible Cultural Heritage, and Hidden Landscapes Day 1: County Town Cultural Route (Ancient Architecture + Intangible Cultural Heritage) After arriving in the morning, head to Shuishentang. This is the landmark of Guangling, a complex of Ming and Qing dynasty buildings built on an island in the middle of a lake. Known as the "Number One Garden in the North," it is free to enter (with ID, 8:00 AM–6:30 PM). It is most beautiful in the early morning mist, when local seniors often come here to exercise or sketch. In the afternoon, visit the Guangling Paper-Cutting Art Museum, which is free all year round (8:30 AM–5:00 PM). Guangling paper-cutting is an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. In the museum, you can learn about the complete process from design to finished product, and the prices for small cultural souvenirs are very reasonable. Afterward, you can stroll around the county town and experience the local atmosphere. In the evening, try the buckwheat noodles (he-le), which is the most common local flavor, as popular here as knife-cut noodles are in Datong. Day 2: Hanging Ancient Temple + Qing Dynasty Castle In the morning, head to Shengquan Temple. Built on a 100-meter cliff, it is known as the "Little Hanging Temple" and is currently free to enter. It is recommended to drive to the entrance at the top of the mountain and walk from top to bottom to see the panoramic view first, then walk down the stone steps along the cliff. The stone steps are steep and slippery, so be sure to wear non-slip shoes. Some areas may be under renovation, so it is best to confirm the opening status before you set off. In the afternoon, visit Jianxi Castle (also known as Jianxi Ancient Residences), which is only about a 5-minute drive from Shuishentang and is free. This is a well-preserved complex of Qing dynasty residential buildings with very little commercialization, perfect for a quiet walk and exploration. Day 3: Sky Grassland or Jile Temple, and a Relaxed Return If you like natural scenery, you can go to the Dianding Mountain Sky Grassland (free) in the morning, where the alpine meadow offers expansive views. If you are interested in temples, you can visit Jile Temple, a large-scale Pure Land Buddhist temple with free admission (8:00 AM–6:00 PM). Return to the county town at noon to eat Sizi Zahui (a local specialty dish made by stewing egg strips, tofu strips, daylily strips, etc.), buy some Guangling dried tofu and millet as souvenirs, and then head back in the afternoon. 💰 Budget Breakdown (Total approx. When people think of ancient hanging architecture in Datong, most immediately think of the Hengshan Hanging Temple. However, hidden away in Guangling, Datong, is a lesser-known ancient cliffside temple—Shengquan Temple, known as the "Little Hanging Temple." The temple was first built during the Taihe era of the Northern Wei Dynasty and was renovated during both the Ming and Qing dynasties. The pavilions are firmly embedded in the sheer cliff face, with wooden structures cantilevered in mid-air, showcasing the magnificent scale of the ancient architecture. There are no endless streams of tour groups, no need to wait in line, and admission is free. With grottoes and halls nestled together, supported by beams inserted halfway into the rock, standing at the foot of the cliff and looking up, you can still feel the perilous ingenuity of ancient construction from a thousand years ago. ⚠️ Tips Due to geological hazards, the halls on the cliff are not always open to the public. Whether you can climb to the top depends on luck; I couldn't go up during my visit, and most of the time, you can only view it from afar at the foot of the mountain. 📍 Navigation: Guangling Shengquan Temple 🎫 Admission: Free 🅿️ Parking: Free

Of all the treasures in the exhibition “Clouds in Flight: Culture and Art of Lacquered Wood from Guangling in the Western Han Dynasty,” I found myself unexpectedly drawn to one of the smallest. Not the magnificent Wenming funerary lamp. Not the lacquer funerary fan. But these tiny painted se-like zhu, or movable bridges used to adjust the strings of an ancient Chinese se. There are 26 pieces in the group, dating to the mid-Western Han Dynasty. Each is barely more than two centimetres in height. And yet, if you lean close enough, an entire universe appears. Painted across their wooden surfaces are celestial gates, clouds, mythical creatures and auspicious beasts. The decoration continues around all four sides, so delicately executed that it is surprisingly easy to miss when viewing them from a normal distance. I certainly did the first time. Only when I looked closely did I realise that these tiny wooden pieces were not merely functional components of a musical instrument. They were miniature landscapes of the Han imagination. A world of immortals. A world somewhere beyond the human realm. During the Western Han, the search for the legendary islands of immortality—Penglai, Fangzhang and Yingzhou—was deeply woven into the imagination of the age. The Records of the Grand Historian describes rulers sending expeditions in search of these mythical mountains and the elixir of immortality. The desire to escape death was not confined to emperors. It permeated Han society. The fear of impermanence was answered with visions of an eternal realm populated by immortals, divine beasts and celestial mountains. And somehow, that enormous cosmology was compressed into objects scarcely two centimetres across. The se itself was an important plucked-string instrument within the Han ritual and musical tradition. These small zhu were placed beneath the strings, allowing the effective string length—and therefore the pitch—to be adjusted. Imagine the musician preparing to play. His fingers would move among these tiny wooden bridges, positioning them beneath the strings. But in this particular instrument, those fingers were also moving through a miniature supernatural landscape. Between the strings and the wooden surface, celestial gates stood among clouds, while mythical creatures seemed to emerge from the painted world. Every adjustment of the string was therefore taking place within an imagined realm beyond ordinary life. There is something wonderfully poetic about this. Music is fleeting. A note exists for only a moment before disappearing into silence. Yet the Han people decorated the very mechanism that determined those notes with an elaborate vision of an eternal universe. Perhaps that was not accidental. Faced with the fragility of life, they sought permanence wherever they could find it—in ritual, music, art, burial and the imagined world beyond death. Two thousand years later, the strings have fallen silent. The instrument itself is gone. The pigments have faded. But these tiny wooden bridges remain. And when you lean close enough to see the clouds and mythical beasts, you begin to understand that what survives here is more than decoration. It is a glimpse into an ancient longing: to impose order on an uncertain universe, and to make something beautiful endure after the human voice has disappeared. 📍 Nanjing Museum, Nanjing, Jiangsu, China 🇨🇳 🏺 “Clouds in Flight: Culture and Art of Lacquered Wood from Guangling in the Western Han Dynasty” 📸 Photography Tip: These pieces reward extreme close-up photography. Don't photograph only the front—the patterns continue around the sides, and the side surfaces can reveal details that are almost invisible from a normal viewing angle. ✨ Twenty-six tiny pieces of painted wood, each barely two centimetres tall, carrying an entire Han Dynasty vision of clouds, celestial gates and mythical worlds. The strings are silent now, but the immortal world once painted beneath them has survived—frozen forever in a few centimetres of wood. 🏺☁️

Shanxi is known for having ancient buildings in every village and national treasures in every county. Deep in the countryside of Guangling, Datong, lies a seriously underrated Ming dynasty temple—Angjian Temple. It doesn’t boast grand halls or bustling crowds. Quietly nestled among the villages at the foot of Liulao Mountain, it captivates northern Shanxi ancient architecture enthusiasts with its stunning 153-square-meter Ming dynasty murals, making it a top secret spot cherished by a niche audience—small in fame but breathtaking in impact. Angjian Temple is located in Dongliutuan Village, Jiadou Township, Guangling County. It backs onto the picturesque Liulao Mountain and is near the clear waters of Huliu River Reservoir, surrounded by peaceful mountains and countryside. The ancient temple is far from city noise, embraced by simple rural villages, offering a serene and tranquil environment. The temple’s origins date back centuries. The main existing buildings were rebuilt in the eighth year of the Ming Zhengde era and later restored during the Qing dynasty. With over 500 years of history, it is now a provincially protected cultural relic quietly preserving half a millennium of heritage. The entire temple is small and exquisite. Originally it had two courtyards; now only one well-preserved courtyard remains, simple and authentic. Its most impressive highlight is the rare 153-square-meter Ming dynasty mural, the temple’s treasure, comparable in value to murals in famous ancient temples. Unlike most temples’ religious murals, Angjian Temple’s murals are uniquely themed and richly detailed. On one wall inside the hall, vivid stories of loyalty and righteousness from the Three Kingdoms period come to life. Figures like Guan Yu, Zhou Cang, and Wang Fu are depicted with lively expressions. The scenes of warriors and battles are intricately detailed, fully recreating the grandeur and drama of the Three Kingdoms era with rich detail. On the opposite wall are visually striking murals of the Ming kings, known for their dramatic “face-tearing” and “belly-tearing” depictions. The lines are sharp, colors earthy, and the figures exude a majestic and awe-inspiring presence. The style is bold and free, radiating a powerful aura. Despite 500 years of weathering, the murals still retain warm colors and smooth lines. Natural pigments like cinnabar and azurite remain bright, with no over-restoration, preserving the pure brushwork of Ming dynasty artists. Besides the murals, the temple houses ancient Ming dynasty steles that record local filial piety legends of Liulao Mountain and the temple’s restoration history, adding rich cultural and historical depth to this rural ancient temple. Over five centuries, the temple has absorbed the simple and profound local culture and folk traditions. Liulao Mountain has long been associated with stories of filial piety, nurturing the land’s honest and kind-hearted spirit. For generations, Angjian Temple has rooted itself in the countryside, shunning fame and fortune. It serves as a place of faith where locals pray for peace and as a carrier of rural cultural heritage. Villagers have quietly protected the temple and treasured the murals, allowing this Ming dynasty masterpiece to remain intact and continuing the most genuine local dedication to cultural preservation and folk belief in northern Shanxi. Finally, here are some practical travel tips. Angjian Temple is a niche, pristine ancient site with no admission fee or commercial facilities. It’s ideal for ancient architecture lovers, mural enthusiasts, and travelers seeking off-the-beaten-path historical sites. The temple is not regularly open to the public. Visitors must contact the on-site cultural heritage staff to arrange a visit, making it a truly deep, private secret. The best time to visit is spring or autumn when the countryside scenery is fresh and soothing, perfectly complementing the simple ancient temple atmosphere. A visit takes about 30 minutes to an hour. It’s recommended to slow down, carefully observe the mural details, read the ancient inscriptions, and immerse yourself in the ultimate charm of Ming dynasty murals. Please visit with respect. Touching, flash photography, or marking the murals is prohibited. Protect this 500-year-old artistic treasure with care. A small courtyard holds great beauty, murals that have lasted over a thousand years. Guangling Angjian Temple hides northern Shanxi’s most stunning Ming dynasty mural secret. Avoid the crowds, head to the countryside, and experience a 500-year-old masterpiece of painted art.

When people mention the Hanging Temple, they usually think of the one at the foot of Mount Hengshan in Hunyuan, Shanxi, a wooden structure built during the Northern Wei dynasty. In fact, there are many hanging temples in Shanxi Province. I have seen them at Zhaogao Temple in Daixian and Luyashan in Xinzhou. The one introduced today feels even larger in scale than the one in Hunyuan. Shengquan Temple is located on the cliff of Motianling in Guangling County, Datong. The path is narrow and the temple is deep, far from villages. It was first built during the Taihe period of the Northern Wei dynasty, making it older than the Hengshan Hanging Temple. Because its hanging architecture closely resembles the Hunyuan Hanging Temple, locals call it the "Little Hanging Temple." The temple is divided into upper and lower sections. The lower temple was mostly rebuilt in modern times and includes buildings such as the Caishen Hall and the Mahavira Hall. It is not a tourist attraction and does not sell any incense or offerings, so it is minimally commercialized. Visitors can explore it freely and for free. This area is also part of the Hengshan mountain range. In ancient times, caves were carved into the cliff, divided into upper and lower stone caves. Now, only the Guanyin Cave remains in the lower temple, while the upper temple still preserves four caves. Below the temple is a spring that has never dried up for a thousand years. The water flows continuously without overflowing and is clear and sweet. Shengquan Temple is named after this sacred spring. The upper temple is a wooden structure embedded on a cliff hundreds of meters high, supported by half-inserted flying beams, hidden rock supports, and round rolling logs. The pavilions hang in midair with a delicate and precarious structure. Its scale seems larger than the Hunyuan Hanging Temple, but it remains unknown to most because it is hidden deep in the mountains. From a distance, it looks even more astonishing, like a rainbow hanging off a cliff or a pavilion in the sky, extremely thrilling. This place is best reached by car. It is quiet and secluded with few visitors. Because the upper temple cannot withstand foot traffic, visitors can only climb to a position level with the temple to take photos. From here, you can overlook the Hengshan mountain range and the scenery of Guangling. Nearby, you can also visit another national protected site in Datong, the Water God Hall, along the way.

The Water God Temple is located on an isolated island in Guangling County, Datong City, Shanxi Province. It is close to residential areas, surrounded by a lake on all sides, and connected by a white stone arch bridge. The temple is not large, facing south from the north, and features a parallel three-courtyard layout. The architectural complex is characterized by an octagonal outer ring, a six-sided inner courtyard, and enclosed corridors, integrating both Buddhist and Taoist elements. The Water God Temple was first built in the Ming Dynasty, originally named Yangshuishen Temple. In the Qing Dynasty, Wenchang Pavilion was expanded on the right side, and it was renamed Water God Temple. The main gate features a single-eave hip-and-gable roof covered with yellow glazed tiles. In the center of the lintel, a vertical plaque inscribed with "Xiao Fang Hu" (Little Square Pot) was penned by the local magistrate. The main hall, Shengmu Hall, is a Ming Dynasty building. Its ridge features two-headed elephants carrying treasure vases. Inside, the Water God, Jiujiang Shengmu, is enshrined. The east and west walls are adorned with large Qing Dynasty murals, "Dragon Mother Leaving the Palace to Bring Rain" and "Returning to the Palace After Rain," which are vibrant in color, vivid in form, and well-preserved. Jiujiang Shengmu is a revered deity in Taoism, yet behind her, the space transforms into Guanyin Pavilion, dedicated to the Buddhist Bodhisattva Guanyin. On both sides, eighteen arhats are nestled in small niches, and surprisingly, there are also suspended sculptures depicting Tang Sanzang and his disciples on their journey to the West. The Lingyin Pagoda in the courtyard is considered the soul of the complex. It is a hexagonal, seven-story brick pagoda situated on a hexagonal stone-built platform. The pagoda body tapers upwards layer by layer, forming a conical shape. It is entirely constructed of blue bricks with exquisite brick carvings, and wind chimes hang from the eaves, producing crisp sounds when the wind blows. The Water God Temple's Huquan Spring, one of China's famous springs, forms a lake from the numerous springs around Hushan Mountain. It is a high-quality non-freezing spring, teeming with koi fish. This site has been designated as a sixth-batch national key protected cultural relic and is open to the public free of charge.

On my first trip to Datong, I tried to fit Yungang Grottoes, Hanging Temple, and Datong Ancient City all into one day. The result was rushing between sites and constantly checking the time at entrances. By the time I got back to the hotel, I was so exhausted I didn’t even want to eat knife-cut noodles. After 8 visits, I finally understood: **Datong’s attractions aren’t few, but they’re spread out, so you have to explore by area!**😵‍💫 The historic buildings in the city center are concentrated in Datong Ancient City. Yungang Grottoes are west of the city. Hanging Temple and Mount Hengshan are in Hunyuan County. Other counties have Great Wall forts, ancient villages, and revolutionary sites in different directions. I recommend copying the route below for your first trip. It covers the classic spots without missing much and avoids crisscrossing Datong every day. 🗓️How many days should you spend in Datong? If you only want to check off Yungang Grottoes, Datong Ancient City, and Hanging Temple, 3 days and 2 nights is barely enough. To enjoy Mount Hengshan, museums, and the ancient city’s night views more leisurely, 4 days and 3 nights is better. The routes through Xinrong, Yanggao, Lingqiu, Guangling, and other counties shown in the map are better for a second visit or a self-drive deep tour. Don’t try to do too much on your first trip, or you’ll spend most of your time on the road despite visiting many places. 🗺️My 4-day, 3-night no-backtracking route Day 1: Take your time exploring Datong Ancient City Here’s a suggested route: Shanhua Temple → Datong Ancient City Wall → Huayan Temple → Nine-Dragon Wall → near Dai Prince’s Mansion → Drum Tower → ancient city night views I strongly recommend not packing your first day too tightly. Both Shanhua Temple and Huayan Temple deserve a slow visit—not just a quick photo at the entrance. Huayan Temple’s Liao and Jin dynasty architecture, statues, and details inside are very rich. Shanhua Temple is more rustic overall, and fans of ancient architecture will really enjoy it. Datong’s official tourism also links Yungang Grottoes, Huayan Temple, Shanhua Temple, Mount Hengshan, and Hanging Temple as an important religious and cultural tour route. In the evening, climb the ancient city wall to watch the sunset, then stroll around the Drum Tower area. After the lights come on, the city walls, streets, and ancient buildings have a completely different atmosphere. Every photo you take will feel like a “Tang dynasty frontier city.”🏮 A quick note: the ticket prices shown in the map are for reference only. In 2026, Huayan Temple will charge 50 yuan during peak season, and Shanhua Temple will continue its discounted 40 yuan ticket. Opening hours, free admission policies, and temporary events depend on the announcements on the day of your visit. Day 2: In-depth visit to Yungang Grottoes Suggested route: Yungang Grottoes → Yungang Museum → return to city for rest Make sure to reserve at least half a day for Yungang Grottoes. My first visit was only 2 hours, and I regretted it later. Don’t just skim the main caves, especially the Tan Yao Five Caves and the mid-period caves. The size, expressions, and carving details of the statues are far more impressive in person than in photos. Yungang Grottoes now require online real-name reservations. The on-site ticket window has been canceled. You can book in advance through the “Yungang Research Institute” or “Yungang Cultural Tourism” mini-programs or official platforms. For popular dates, book early. A guided tour is highly recommended. If your budget allows, hire a guide. If not, study the Northern Wei capital relocation, carving background, and key caves beforehand. Otherwise, you might spend the whole morning looking at statues without really understanding them. Have dinner back in the ancient city. Don’t try to squeeze in other distant attractions that day. Saving your energy is the right choice. Day 3: Hanging Temple + Mount Hengshan + Hunyuan Ancient City Suggested route: Datong city → Hanging Temple → Mount Hengshan → Hunyuan Ancient City → return to Datong It’s best to hire a car, join a carpool, or self-drive this day. Public transport is possible but inflexible with transfers. During peak season, long lines can easily delay your entire schedule. The Hanging Temple visit includes sightseeing and climbing experience. It’s impressive from afar, but walking on the wooden plank paths inside the temple feels completely different. The climbing tickets are very limited. In 2026, the site limits daily climbers and has updated online booking and facial recognition rules. Always buy tickets through official channels and don’t trust overpriced “insider” tickets. Choose Mount Hengshan based on your stamina. If you like hiking, reserve 3–4 hours. If you’re with elderly or kids, you can use the site’s transport and cable cars. No need to force yourself to “conquer the Northern Peak” by hiking the whole way. From May to September, the mountain usually follows summer opening hours, but weather, holidays, and maintenance may affect operations. Check the latest “Mount Hengshan Scenic Area” announcements before you go. After descending, have dinner in Hunyuan Ancient City. Don’t miss the cold noodles! Day 4: Museums + departure On the last day, I plan: Datong City Museum → China Sculpture Museum or finish exploring the ancient city → departure Datong City Museum is a great way to wrap up your trip. After seeing Northern Wei, Liao, and Jin artifacts, you’ll connect many historical threads from the grottoes and temples you visited earlier. The museum requires real-name free reservations, bookable in advance per official rules. If you have time, visit the China Sculpture Museum. If not, finish taking photos or buy souvenirs in the ancient city. 🏨Where to stay for convenience? For your first visit, stay near Datong Ancient City. It’s convenient for dinner and night views. Huayan Temple, Drum Tower, and the city wall are also nearby. Self-driving travelers can stay on the outskirts of the ancient city or in Yudong New District, where parking is easier. Don’t stay too far just to save money. Taxi fares in Datong add up quickly if you’re far away. On the day you visit Hanging Temple and Mount Hengshan, there’s no need to move to Hunyuan County unless you plan to explore Hunyuan Ancient City, Yong’an Temple, and other sites in depth. 🍜Must-eat foods in Datong I always eat knife-cut noodles, topped with pork mince, lamb, or tomato and egg sauce, plus a marinated egg. It’s cheap and filling.😋 Other dishes to try: Datong lamb offal, Hunyuan cold noodles, yellow cake, rabbit head, shumai, sea buckthorn juice, copper hot pot, and old Datong assorted hot pot. Lamb offal and rabbit head are strong flavors, so order small portions if it’s your first time. Hunyuan cold noodles are best eaten in Hunyuan County, paired with garlic water, chili oil, and dried tofu for a tasty kick. Popular shops in the ancient city’s core streets often have long lines, so try side streets where local eateries are more authentic. ⚠️Tips to avoid pitfalls ✅ Don’t schedule Hanging Temple and Yungang Grottoes on the same day. They’re in different directions, and queues in peak season make it very rushed. ✅ Don’t leave only 2 hours for Yungang Grottoes. Including transport, guide, and museum, reserve at least half a day. ✅ Don’t copy the ticket prices in the map directly. Many Datong attractions adjust prices and opening hours based on season, events, and preservation needs. ✅ Buy Hanging Temple climbing tickets only through official channels. The site strictly limits visitors, and you might not get tickets if you go last minute. ✅ Datong has big temperature differences between morning and evening. Even in summer, bring a light jacket. Mount Hengshan is windy, so prepare for sun and wind protection. ✅ Avoid using flash inside ancient buildings. Don’t touch murals, statues, or wooden structures. Follow no-photography rules in restricted areas. Honestly, Datong isn’t a city propped up by a single popular photo spot. Its grottoes, Liao and Jin architecture, Northern Wei history, and frontier Great Wall sites offer deep content. The first visit might just feel impressive, but the second time you come, you’ll realize this ancient city is worth exploring again and again. Sisters planning a trip to Datong, save this route first. Exploring by area really saves time and energy!👍

In late July, I traveled with two friends from Datong for two days and one night, spending about 380 yuan per person. Guangling Shuishentang is a local hidden gem known as the "Little Penglai of Northern China." It’s quiet, free to enter, and completely free of crowds. This guide is based on firsthand experience and is perfect for beginners to follow. Shuishentang, Yanling Road, Huquan Town, Guangling County, Datong City, Shanxi Province 9:00 AM–12:00 PM Transportation: It’s about a 5-minute taxi ride from the center of Guangling County, costing 6–8 yuan. If driving, navigate directly to "Shuishentang," where free parking is available. Admission: free with a valid ID. Open from 8:00 AM to 6:30 PM. What to do: Shuishentang is built on Hushan Island, surrounded by water on all sides. The entire complex is an irregular octagon, which is rare nationwide. Three must-see spots: first, the Qing Dynasty "Hundred Trades" murals inside the Holy Mother Hall, featuring 244 lifelike figures from various professions, often called the "Qing Dynasty version of the Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival"; second, the seven-level octagonal Lingying Pagoda with exquisite brick carvings, the visual centerpiece of the complex; third, the Hundred Trades Society where Confucius, Laozi, and Lu Ban are enshrined together, a rare sight in China. Great photo spots include the lake pavilion for reflections and the stone bridge gate framing the main hall. Tips from experience: There are no food or drink vendors inside, so bring water and snacks. Mosquitoes are common in summer, so bring insect repellent. Wear comfortable flat shoes as the blue brick paths are uneven. Arrive before 9:00 AM for the fewest crowds and softest light. Jianxi Ancient Fortress, Guangling County, Datong City, Shanxi Province 2:00 PM–4:30 PM Transportation: About a 5-minute drive from Shuishentang. Admission: free. What to do: Jianxi Ancient Fortress is a well-preserved Qing Dynasty folk architecture complex. The village is very clean and tidy, with the fortress gate, old houses, and stone paths retaining their original appearance. The two stone lions outside Shuishentang’s mountain gate were originally from here and later moved. The fortress is small; a slow walk of about 1 hour is enough. It’s ideal for capturing photos with a local life vibe. Practical tips: Afternoon light casts beautiful shadows on the fortress walls. There are no commercial facilities in the village, so head back to the county for meals afterward. Guangling County center Evening 6:00 PM–night Highlights: The county is small, and a stroll along the street after dinner is very pleasant. Locals gather outside to relax and chat, creating a strong sense of community. Try the roadside sweet porridge—a sweet and sour apricot drink that’s especially refreshing when chilled. Tips: Use mosquito repellent when going out at night. Shops close early, so finish eating and drinking before 8:00 PM. Local must-try foods 1. Huanggao (yellow cake) Full address: Old shop at the entrance of Shuishentang, look for the one with many locals Average cost: 5–8 yuan per person Signature dish: yellow cake dipped in meat sauce Review: Sticky but not gummy, the meat sauce is savory and flavorful. A great choice for breakfast or a light meal. 2. Guangling five-spice dried tofu Full address: County snack shops or street stalls Average cost: 10 yuan per bag Signature dish: five-spice dried tofu Review: Salty and chewy, vacuum-packed versions make good souvenirs. Guangling eyebrow donkey meat is also worth trying—fresh, fragrant, and juicy. Transportation guide Guangling County is about 100 kilometers from Datong. Driving is the most convenient option, with good road conditions throughout. Taxis are easy to find in the county, with rides to Shuishentang or Jianxi Ancient Fortress taking about 5 minutes and costing under 10 yuan each way. Avoid private charter cars and unlicensed vehicles. Accommodation recommendations Choose hotels in the core area of Guangling County, such as around Xinjian Street and Guangtai West Street, within walking distance of dining and shopping areas. We stayed in a county hotel with standard rooms around 150 yuan, which was clean, comfortable, and convenient. Staying near the scenic spots is not recommended due to limited facilities. Real pitfall avoidance guide 1. Shuishentang itself is free. Avoid any private guides or solicitors at the entrance. 2. There are no food vendors near the scenic area. Don’t trust roadside "specialty snacks" sales pitches; it’s safer to eat back in the county. 3. All tickets are through official channels. Shuishentang is free with an ID. 4. Try to avoid the flood season in August and September, which is hot, humid, and rainy. Late July is more comfortable but has more mosquitoes. Essential items for travel In July and August, daytime temperatures in Guangling range from 20 to 30°C, with cool mornings and evenings. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, a sun hat, comfortable flat shoes, insect repellent (a must), a power bank, a light jacket (for mornings and evenings), and a water bottle. The whole trip is relaxing and restorative. Shuishentang’s ancient architecture is exquisite, Jianxi Ancient Fortress is pristine, and the county’s prices are low. Two days and one night cost about 380 yuan per person. It’s perfect for those who love ancient buildings, seek peace, and want to avoid crowded attractions. This guide is based on real experience and can be followed directly by beginners.

Anjian Temple is the fifth provincial-level cultural relic protection unit in Shanxi Province. Its founding date is unknown. The existing buildings all date back to the eighth year of the Ming Zhengde era (1513) and were renovated in the 23rd year of the Qing Jiaqing era (1818). The temple faces south and originally had two courtyards, but only one remains today, covering an area of about 970 square meters. The most remarkable feature of Anjian Temple is its murals — covering a total area of 153 square meters. The temple was once used as a granary. Villagers, unwilling to see the murals destroyed, covered them with white powder, which saved them from devastation. The hall enshrines Guan Yu, and the murals depict stories from the Three Kingdoms, including "Cao Cao gifting a horse," "Beheading Wen Chou at White Horse Mountain," "Beheading Yan Liang at the Yellow River ferry," "Blocking Cao Cao on the Huarong Trail," and "Beheading Han Fu at Yuyang Pass." Guan Yu and Cao Cao are shown wearing armor and holding weapons, giving the scenes a strong narrative feel. Cultural relic protectors even pointed out a cross-eyed Red Hare horse in the murals. The main hall’s mural, "Protector Deities," is even more impressive — a procession of over 600 figures including the emperor and empress, the Eight Heavenly Dragons, and various ghosts and gods. The colors are vivid, with pigments like powdered gold, cinnabar, and azurite creating a solemn and mysterious atmosphere. Remarkably, the artist drew straight lines without a ruler and arcs without a compass, with no trace of sketching. In the side chamber, you can also see the "Face-tearing King" and "Belly-tearing King," as well as a nationally rare "Breast-hanging Guanyin." On the west wall beside the main hall’s door is a grass-script stele — "Guan Liu Lao Cao" by Liu Shenwen, the magistrate of Guangling in the 11th year of the Ming Wanli era. Behind it is a legend about the village name "Liulao Tuan": during the Northern Dynasties, elderly people over 60 were sent to the mountains. A filial son, unwilling to part with his father, hid him in the mountains in a basket. This moved the emperor, and the village was renamed "Liulao Tuan."

On the loess plateau of northern Shanxi, there is a hidden ancient architectural wonder surrounded by clear water. Guangling Water God Temple—known as the "Little Penglai of the North" and "Little Fanghu"—is a Ming and Qing dynasty complex on an island in the middle of a lake. It is a nationally protected cultural relic. This temple is built on water, with spring water bubbling up from underground to form the lake. The Ming dynasty pavilions seem to float in the center of the water. Starting from the center of Guangling County, it takes only a few minutes to arrive. A stone arch bridge, like a jade belt, stretches across the water, leading visitors to the small island hidden among green trees in the lake’s center. The entire temple is built on this island surrounded by the spring-fed lake, connected by only one bridge—surrounded on all sides by clear water, it looks like a green island floating on the water from afar. Water is the soul here. Springs gush around Hushan, flowing year-round without pause, forming a vast pond covering hundreds of acres. The water is sweet and pure, maintaining a constant temperature year-round. Even in the depths of winter, it never freezes. Locals call it the "divine spring." Above the mountain gate hangs a vertical plaque inscribed by Zhu Xiudu, the county magistrate of Guangling during the Qianlong period of the Qing dynasty, reading "Little Fanghu," symbolizing that this scenery rivals the famous "Great Fanghu" of Penglai Island in Shandong. Famous mountains and beautiful waters—this is what they mean. Crossing the mountain gate, a delicate world suddenly unfolds. The Water God Temple complex was first built in the Ming dynasty, with most existing structures dating from the Qing dynasty. The overall layout is octagonal, with each side about 13 to 14 meters long, covering only 900 square meters. Yet within this tiny area, it contains a complete temple complex of more than 40 buildings—including the mountain gate, bell and drum towers, Guanyin Hall, Jiujang Holy Mother Shrine, Wenchang Pavilion, and more. Built around all eight sides, the doors, corridors, halls, and rooms are compact and integrated, a true "spatial magic" in ancient architecture. This typical octagonal courtyard style is extremely rare in architectural history. On the central axis, the Holy Mother Hall faces south and enshrines the Jiujang Holy Mother, who oversees rivers, lakes, and springs. In the northeast corner stands the Wenchang Pavilion, a two-story, four-cornered, pointed-roof wooden structure with a light and elegant form. In the southeast corner is a seven-story exquisite brick pagoda—the Lingying Treasure Pagoda—a hexagonal solid brick tower imitating wooden construction, nearly 18 meters tall, with a stable and dignified shape that is delicate and graceful. When the wind passes, the bells ring, creating a profound and distant atmosphere.

Hidden among the northern Shanxi mountains is a thousand-year-old temple “hanging” on a cliff hundreds of feet high. Guangling Shengquan Temple—known as the “Little Hanging Temple”—was built during the Northern Wei Taihe period (477–499), earlier than Hengshan’s Hanging Temple. The entire temple is embedded halfway up the Tianwang Ridge cliff, with steep mountains above and deep valleys below—this temple isn’t built on the mountain, it grows out of the cliff face. ⛰️First sight · cliffside flying rainbow Thirteen kilometers south of Guangling County, follow the winding Great Wall No. 1 Tourist Road. After the last curve, a hanging pavilion suddenly appears—like a flying rainbow on the cliff or an aerial pavilion carved into the rock face. Looking up from the valley floor, it seems ready to be carried away by the wind at any moment. Below the temple is a clear spring that flows without overflowing and never runs dry, known as the “Sacred Spring”—one of Guangling’s ancient eight scenic spots, “Sacred Spring and Pine Breeze.” The spring has never dried up in a thousand years and is said to cure illness and dispel disaster. The temple’s name comes from this spring. 🏗️Architecture · craftsmanship on the sheer cliff Shengquan Temple is built on half-inserted flying beams, cleverly supported by hidden rocks, with wooden tenons and stone mortises, creating a precise structure. It combines wonder, danger, surprise, uniqueness, and skill—perfectly blending architectural aesthetics with mechanics.

Rare to see in northern Shanxi, the entire ancient building sits on an island in the middle of Huquan Lake. Locals also call it the Little Penglai beyond the Great Wall. A bridge connects it to the shore, with the lake surrounding the shrine, creating an immersive atmosphere. The official opening time is 8:00 AM, but I arrived at 7:30 AM. The gatekeeper was very kind. Seeing I had traveled far and it wasn’t open yet, he made an exception and let me in early. The garden was quiet in the early morning with almost no visitors, making the experience even better. There is no admission fee and no reservation required. It’s a small but charming nationally protected historic site without over-commercialization or flashy renovations, preserving the original look of the past. Stepping inside, the ground is paved with old bricks. The worn and weathered tiles underfoot are full of history, each brick telling a story of time. I love this authentic feel of ancient architecture. The ancient buildings on the island are scattered, with the Lingying Pagoda standing quietly. Springs flow gently around the lake, and the water is clear. Walking on the island, the breeze from the lake brings a peaceful calm. No need to rush, just walk slowly and quietly to appreciate the unique charm of northern Shanxi’s landscape blending with Ming and Qing dynasty architecture. 💡Travel tips ▪️Admission: free, no reservation needed ▪️Hours: 8:00 AM–6:30 PM, early visits recommended for fewer people and better light ▪️Duration: about 1 hour, perfect for a quick stop if passing by ▪️Location: southeast of Guangling County. It’s close by car from Nuanquan Ancient Town and can be combined with visits to Weixian and Nuanquan Ancient Town

Honest travel tips for Guangling✨ stunning and healing but truly not recommended in August and September! Always amazed by hidden travel gems! Guangling in Datong, Shanxi, is a seriously underrated northern "Little Jiangnan." It’s free from crowds and commercialization, hiding secret landscapes, ancient architecture, intangible cultural heritage, and local life. Gentle and peaceful, once you visit, you’ll never forget it! But first, a heartfelt truth🔥 Guangling is beautiful and offers great value, but August and September are not recommended for a dedicated trip! Many guides say it’s beautiful all year round but never mention the real downsides! As a firsthand traveler, I’m sharing the most authentic experience, pitfalls to avoid, best travel times, and a complete guide to eating, drinking, playing, and staying. If you’re planning to visit Guangling, just copy this! Why should you never go to Guangling in August and September? (Honest warning) Objective and fair, focusing on what travelers care about most. If you plan to travel during this time, read this carefully! 1. Day and night temperatures are chaotic, hot and humid People say northern Shanxi is a natural summer retreat, but Guangling in August and September breaks that idea! Days are oppressively hot—not dry heat but sticky and humid, making sightseeing exhausting and sweaty. The temperature difference between day and night shrinks, losing the usual coolness and Guangling’s best summer advantage. 2. Concentrated rainy season, high chance of rain August and September are flood season in Guangling, with frequent showers and thunderstorms. The weather is very unstable! It’s often clear in the morning but suddenly storms in the afternoon. Mountain attractions and wetland trails become slippery and muddy, making walking dangerous, photos dull, and the scenery less impressive. 3. Scenic beauty at a low point, lacking atmosphere Spring and summer’s fresh greenery, autumn’s colorful forests, and winter’s quiet snow scenes are all much more beautiful than August and September! During this time, vegetation looks messy, river water is murky, and there’s no clear blue sky or water. Whether shooting landscapes or ancient architecture, photos won’t come out well. 4. Lots of mosquitoes, affecting the experience Wetlands, forests, and ancient temples are lush with greenery, and mosquitoes swarm in August and September, especially at dusk around Huliu River wetlands and mountain trails. Mosquito repellent barely works, making the whole trip uncomfortable. ✅ The truly perfect seasons to visit Guangling 👉 April to June spring healing: wildflowers bloom everywhere, rivers are crystal clear, temperatures are cool and comfortable, everything revives with lush greenery, and the atmosphere is perfect 👉 October to November autumn beauty: mountains covered in red leaves, colorful forests, clear skies, bright light, every photo looks like wallpaper—this is the best season for photography Must-visit core spots in Guangling | hidden gems with no risk Guangling has no trendy, mass-produced attractions. Southeast of Guangling County in Shanxi, on Hushan Island, stands an ancient building surrounded by water on all sides, accessible only by a single bridge. In Qingming 2025, I arrived here. From afar, a pool of clear water supports a solitary island, the water surface wide and rippling. A cultural protection stele stands at the bridgehead; crossing the bridge leads to the Water God Temple, also called Feng Shui Shen Ci. The Water God Temple is octagonal, surrounded by a covered corridor. The mountain gate has a single-eave hard mountain roof, with a plaque reading "Xiao Fang Hu," inscribed by Zhu Xiudu, the Qing Guangling county magistrate. Fang Hu refers to a legendary sea mountain. To the west of the gate is the Drum Tower, and to the east, the Bell Tower, with an iron bell cast in the fifth year of the Ming Jiajing reign. Behind the mountain gate is the Holy Mother Hall, three bays wide, with a single-eave hanging mountain roof, decorated with yellow glazed tiles. Inside the hall is a statue of the Water God—the Holy Mother of Jiujiang. The east wall features the painting "Dragon Mother Leaving the Palace to Bring Rain," and the west wall shows "Returning to the Palace After the Rain." Guangling belongs to Datong in Shanxi, located on the northern Jin Plateau, a harsh frontier land, so the murals express wishes for favorable weather and abundant harvests. Directly behind the hall is the Guanyin Hall, housing Guanyin in the center, with Manjushri and Samantabhadra on either side, and eighteen Arhats painted on the two walls. The Taoist Holy Mother and Buddhist Bodhisattvas coexist here, connected yet undisturbed by each other, which is quite unique. In front of the Holy Mother Hall stands the "Lingying Pagoda," built during the Qianlong period of the Qing dynasty. It is a seven-story, hexagonal, solid brick pagoda. To the west of the pagoda, a moon gate is set in the courtyard wall, with the inscription "Mo Chi" (Ink Pool) on the lintel. Standing behind the gate, the pagoda fits perfectly into the moon gate, one standing and one lying down, one tall and one low—the pagoda as a brush, the pool as an inkstone, forming a perfect brush-and-inkstone motif. This small temple on the frontier not only prays for favorable weather but also hopes for flourishing literary fortune. Beyond the moon gate is the Hundred Craftsmen Shrine, where statues of the three ancestral founders of trades are enshrined: in the center, the Supreme Lord Laozi (God of the Fire and Metal Furnace), to the left Fan Li (ancestor of merchants), and to the right Lu Ban (patron saint of craftsmen). On both sides, there are 41 murals depicting various tradespeople—blacksmiths, carpenters, tailors, peddlers... Each mural is accompanied by a dedicated building backdrop and work scenes. Though the lines are rough, the expressions are vivid, making it Guangling’s own version of the Qingming Riverside Scroll. Centuries later, few ask about the stories of immortals, but the daily lives of common folk remain captured for every visitor to see. Finally, on the east side of the Holy Mother Hall is the Wenchang Pavilion, built during the Qianlong era of the Qing dynasty. It is a fully wooden structure with two stories, four corners, a pointed roof, and flying eaves. Inside, the Wenchang Emperor is enshrined. It is one of the few surviving ancient wooden buildings in Guangling. Leaving the Water God Temple, crossing the stone bridge and looking back, a pool of clear water embraces the solitary island, with the reflection of the seven-story pagoda. Whether Fang Hu or Penglai, this is not a fleeting fairy mountain but a temple that embraces the earthly world.
