We spent three unforgettable days there, and here’s our tried-and-true itinerary and tips. First, the logistics! How to get there by train from Hong Kong It’s easier than it seems! We took the high-speed train from West Kowloon Station in Hong Kong. The journey to Guilin takes about 3 hours. The key is to buy tickets online in advance (foreigners can only use Trip.com) because popular routes sell out quickly. Great news for Russians: no visa is required for stays up to 30 days! The train itself is incredibly comfortable and clean, and the three hours fly by as you watch the changing scenery outside. You can also reach Guilin by train from other Chinese cities or directly by plane. Payments and communication: Don’t worry! Money: Alipay is widely accepted and can be linked to a foreign card. Cash is also used, but it’s good to have small bills for markets and minor purchases. Communication: English is rarely spoken. WeChat with its built-in translator was a lifesaver—just send a voice or text message, and it translates. After our driver in Yangshuo dropped us off in Guilin City, we switched to another car driven by a driver who also served as our guide, and began our local day tour. Once all the other group members were picked up, we set off for Longsheng. The journey to Longsheng involved winding mountain roads, which made it hard for me to relax despite feeling a bit drowsy from waking up early. I kept my eyes on the road, worried that any lapse in attention might lead to an accident. Fortunately, our driver-guide was very familiar with the mountain roads and drove skillfully. After over two hours of careful driving, we arrived at our first stop of the day — Huangluo Red Yao Village. Huangluo Red Yao Village is home to a "Long Hair Village," where the women have incredibly long hair. The longest hair among them measures two to three meters. Curious about their hair care secrets, we visited a technology building where staff provided detailed explanations, broadening our knowledge. Afterward, my spouse and I strolled leisurely through the village, crossing the Tongxin Corridor and the Wind and Rain Bridge, and taking photos by the river, thoroughly enjoying ourselves. After spending an hour in the village, we headed to our next stop: a restaurant recommended by our driver-guide, known for its authentic local cuisine. As soon as we got out of the car, we saw a lady grilling bamboo tube chicken and bamboo tube rice in front of the restaurant, which added a rustic charm. We shared a table with some friendly group members and enjoyed a flavorful and delicious lunch together. After the meal, we set off for the highlight of the trip: the Jinkeng Dazhai Cableway and Golden Buddha Peak. After about a 30-minute drive, we arrived at the Jinkeng Dazhai parking lot, at the cableway station at the foot of Golden Buddha Peak. With tickets in hand, we eagerly boarded the cable car. We were grateful for the good weather that day, as it wasn’t raining, and even more so for the breathtaking view of the terraced fields after the winter harvest. The entire mountain of Jinkeng Terraces unfolded before us as we ascended in the cable car. I was so captivated by the scenery that I couldn’t stop taking photos, almost forgetting my fear of heights. Upon reaching Golden Buddha Peak, the view was even more stunning and serene. However, my fear of heights kept me from getting too close to the railings for photos. Luckily, there was a one-story observation deck on the mountain, where I felt comfortable enough to approach the railings and capture the terraced landscape. I had always dreamed of seeing the terraces in person, and finally fulfilling that dream made the trip truly worthwhile. I hope to return during summer or autumn when the terraces are at their most beautiful. After spending some time on the mountain, we reluctantly took the cable car back down and reunited with the driver and housekeeper from our hotel at the parking lot.
