So lucky! The day before bringing the kids to Enshi, we just caught the news that Pingshan Grand Canyon would reopen on March 26 after being closed for maintenance for several months. We finally caught the first wave of reopening benefits! We arrived in Enshi at 10 a.m., checked into the hotel, picked up the car, and drove 2 hours straight to the scenic area. There was very little traffic on the highway, the road conditions were excellent, and traveling with kids was completely hassle-free. To get to Pingshan Gorge, you can take a bus to Hefeng and then carpool, or just rent a car for peace of mind. The mountain roads have many curves, so beginners shouldn’t force themselves to drive. For accommodation, I suggest staying in two places: near the Grand Canyon scenic area to enter early and avoid crowds, and in Hefeng town near Pingshan Gorge. Enter the scenic area early the next day when there are fewer people and better light. Most homestay owners will share some lesser-known photo spots with you. You can stay comfortably for about 100-300 RMB per person. I’ve organized the itinerary for you. At the Grand Canyon, head straight to Qixingzhai first. You must walk the cliff plank road, with a bottomless abyss underfoot and endless peaks in the distance. Your legs may shake but the scenery is worth crying over. The incense stick rock is the treasure of the canyon, and the upward shot is super stunning. There’s also the nearly thousand-year-old Welcoming Pine growing on the cliff, full of stories. Do you prefer the cliff plank road or the incense stick rock? At Pingshan Gorge, be sure to go early, enter before 8 AM, and take the earliest boat into the core area. For photos on the floating boat, choose a sunny day when sunlight shines into the gorge and the water looks like emerald. The boat really feels like it’s floating in the air. Don’t trust private boats; take the official scenic area boat. Only the right route will give you great shots. Don’t miss the local food: Enshi small potatoes, Tujia cured meat, and Hezha. Street stalls and farmhouse dishes are very authentic, costing about 50-80 RMB per person for a satisfying meal, fresh and delicious with no risk of disappointment. I’ll also warn you about some pitfalls: wear non-slip shoes at the Grand Canyon because the plank road has many steps; don’t wear high heels. At Pingshan Gorge, avoid long skirts or wide pants as it’s easy to get wet when boarding and disembarking. The floating boat photo service charges separately on site, pay as needed, and don’t be fooled by expensive photography packages. The plank road is paved with bluestone slabs and built on a sheer cliff, standing over the abyss, making visitors shiver with fear and thrill. The plank road is about 480 meters long and quite challenging to climb. It is said that monkeys used to walk on this plank road, but it was closed for safety reasons. From the plank road, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of both sides of the canyon. 3. Longjing Gorge water rafting. Longjing Gorge rafting is about 30 kilometers long and is one of Enshi's most distinctive rafting experiences. Located within Luoshuidong Village, it is 12 kilometers from the county town and 25 kilometers from Hefeng County. The canyon's cliffs are steep and dangerous, with rapid river currents at the bottom. The riverbed is steep, winding, with large drops, and the water is clear and transparent. The rafting is divided into three sections: the sightseeing section, the primitive adventure section, and the thrilling rafting section. 4. Underground karst cave exploration. Not far from the canyon lies a mysterious underground cave—Yuhuang Cave (also known as "Wanshou Palace").
