The Stunning Stained Glass Windows Of Hereford Cathedral, True Timeless Art
Hereford Cathedral is a stunning religious landmark full of amazing stone masonry and craftsmanship, the highlight for me are the stained glass windows. I have always been fascinated by these kinds of windows and always seek them out for their vivid colours, detailing and sheer skilled work. It always amazes me how they can stand the test of time and endure so much sunlight and still maintain their vivid colours.
Hereford cathedral have some of the biggest stained glass windows I have ever seen, with floor to ceiling examples throughout the main hall. Along with ornamental windows around the entrances and side rooms. Some of the smaller rooms at the back of the Cathedral have rows of smaller stained glass windows that tell stories, with each window representing a page in a book.
This is something you really have to see if you are in the area, the entrance to the cathedral is free but they do encourage donations to help fund the restoration and maintenance of the building !

The Mappa Mundi, One Of the Oldest Maps Of The World. Medieval Mastery!
The Mappa Mundi is one of the last remaining medieval maps of the world, and it is beautifully preserved in Hereford cathedral. It dates from around 1300AD and it shows the world as it was known at the time, it is a fascinating look at the names, shapes and trade routes that were thought to be fact at the time. It’s amazing to try and trace your steps by picking a place you recognize the name of and exploring the area around it, so much was different back then.
The map focuses on Jerusalem at the center as due to religious reasons that was seen as the center of the world at the time. A larger example was destroyed during the second world war so this really is a once in a lifetime chance to see something on this scale.
You need to pay for entry around $7.50 to see this and the chained library exhibition, both are worth visiting as these things don’t exist anywhere else!

Hereford Cathedral, A historical Landmark Full Of Incredible Surprises
Hereford Cathedral is one of the most striking pieces of religious architecture in the UK, with a structure on the site from as far back as 1079. The building has been lovingly restored over the last 100 years with it’s original features, stained glass windows and basements brought back to life. The cathedral itself is huge and you really have to go in to understand the sheer scale of the building.
The stonework and attention to detail throughout the building is stunning and really makes you appreciate the craftsmanship that went into this wonderful place.
The cathedral offers an amazing glimpse into it’s history along with it’s library and basement levels. There are also separate exhibitions with the worlds largest chained library, and the mappa mundi - a medieval map of the world. These are an extra charge but the cathedral itself is free to enter, just be aware that it is an active religious site so please be quiet during services.

The Last Chained Linrsry In The World, You Won’t Believe Your Eyes!!
It is not often that you see something this unexpected, something that opens your eyes to something you have never even thought about! This happened to me when I visited one of the last remaining chained librarys in the world, it feels strange even typing this sentence!
The library is the only one in the world that still has all of it’s chains and attachments, giving you the most authentic glimpse of a chained library in action. Some of the books are over 1000 years old and are some of the oldest surviving books currently on display in the united kingdom. There are old tax records, music manuscripts and local land registries - along with one of the few remaining copies of the infamous Magna Carta.
The books are chained into the shelves with desks below to allow reading, the chains allowed people to access the books for research without them being stolen - a practice dating back to medieval times.
You can get tickets in advance for 7.50 to enter the mappa mundi exhibition and the chained library. It’s well worth doing if you re in Hereford.

Historic Hereford, Get A Feel For Life As it Was. Stepping Back In Time.
Hereford is a historical cathedral city in England, famous for it’s old buildings, cobbled streets and laid back atmosphere. The city is a perfect day trip for people wanting a quieter pace in life and to feel like they are going back in time, the city has protected a lot of it’s historic buildings and many have been beautifully restored.
There are long cobbled streets with black and white timber framed buildings, winding alley ways and historic markets - where you can still visit a butcher, dairy, green grocer and other by gone institutions. The city also has some of the oldest continuously running pubs in the area, with amazing original features, stain glass windows and original serving bars.
The cathedral is obviously a huge highlight and it’s scale and condition is very impressive, along with it’s famous chained library and the museum for the mappa mundi - an original map of the world from the medieval era!
This is a great town for families as it’s relatively quiet, heavily pedestrianised with a wide range of food options and activities.

A Rare Chained Library & Ancient Medieval Map Of The World - Hereford Has It All!
If you want something unique to do you can’t get better than this, head to Hereford Cathedral and see uniqueness defined. The museum contains the Mappa Mundi, chained library and a copy of the manga carta of 1217.
The Mappa Mundi is a medieval map of the world etched onto a single calf skin - it’s been dated to around 1300 and shows the Christian world as they knew it. It’s an incurable time portal into that era as it shows how they viewed the world based on religion and geography. It has English versions translated along with videos about the map and staff to help explain it. It’s honestly fascinating and I didn’t even know it existed.
Further inside there is an example of a chained library, the last remaining in the world and also the largest collation of chained books ever assembled. They date from 800AD and are chained into place to keep them safe and secure, a common feature in the early 17th century.
At the entrance to the museum there is also a copy of the manga carta, however when I visited (August 25) it was a copy as the real one was being held offsite.
Genuinely a mind blowing experience I’d recommend any one even slightly interested in history!

FREE! You Won’t Believe Your Eyes At Hereford Cathedral, Centuries of History And Beauty.
Hereford cathedral is something you have to see to believe, it’s one of the most beautifully preserved buildings I have ever seen and I was overwhelmed by the detailing. As with all cathedrals the sheer scale of the building is really hard to comprehend, but for me it was the level of restoration and preservation that really impressed me.
The main hall and atrium have Incredible stone work from floor to ceiling and the symmetry across the sides is amazing. The high roof allows some of the biggest stained glass windows I’ve ever seen with the most vivid colours - you really need to get close to see how much detailing and story telling there is within the windows.
There are smaller rooms and alcoves dotted around the cathedral each with tombs and tributes to various historical figures. To the rear there is also a submerged tomb you can access and a side garden with a small cafe and gift shop.
As with all religious buildings it’s free entry but they do encourage donations. I would highly recommend a visit and donate if you feel comfortable to help continue the preservation of this stunning building.

Historical Hereford, Enjoy The Unspoilt Charm Of This Magical Town. So Much history!
I recently spent the day in Hereford and was really impressed by the charm and character this historical town has, it’s something you should add to your list if you’re in the area. The city has a beautiful pedestrianised center that links all of the historical sites, along with the more modern amenities you need for a day trip.
The highlights are some stunning Tudor buildings with their iconic black and white panelling, original leaded glass windows and quirky tilts. A lot of them have been repurposed into modern shops but have kept a lot of their historical charm.
The butter market offers a glimpse into a world gone by where supermarkets didn’t exist, you can get eggs, meet and cheese along with various household supplies - and the prices aren’t as steep as you’d think!
Also the cathedral is an absolute must do, it’s free entry into the main building with incredible stain glass windows, ancient tombs and gardens. There’s a supplement for the museum but it’s well worth the cost!
Overall a really interesting day out, with something for everyone in the family! It’s also on main rail routes to Manchester, Cardiff, London and Bristol so very easy to get to!

The beauty of the Brecon Beacons
Hay Bluff is one of my favourite viewpoints in the Brecon Beacons. The hike up is quite challenging. I would say a moderate level hike. If you love the great outdoors and being surrounded by unspoiled nature then you can do no better than the Brecon beacons. If you’re travelling to Wales in 2025 make sure you give this hike a try, you won’t regret it!

Happy times in Hereford
You HAVE to visit this beautiful city. Such history. Such culture. So much to explore. Travelled up by train stopping off at Birmingham but many other routes to get there from London. Personally loved the cathedral and the river. Was really lucky with the weather. Some lovely shops as well, lots of chain but also lots of independents. Make sure you check the city out and travel out of the centre to see the incredible countryside too!
