#January Destinations 2026 Hida no Sato (Hida Folk Village) Simply put, it's a Gassho-zukuri village relatively close to the city. It contains many ancient buildings from the Hida region and displays showcasing the lives of people from that era. It's beautiful when it snows in winter, but extremely cold, so be sure to dress warmly. There are buses, but they are infrequent, so driving is highly recommended. It's a 5-10 minute drive from Takayama City. Sometimes there are illumination events, but unfortunately, I didn't see any when I visited at the end of December. Overall, I highly recommend visiting.

How did I end up falling in love with Takayama over and over again like this? Takayama, an ancient town nestled in the mountains of the Hida region, is one of my absolute favorite places in Japan. A small town overflowing with charm—so much that I had to come back for the second time. This trip was at the end of April, and I was secretly hoping to catch some sakura. Luckily, the cherry blossoms bloomed late this year, so I still got to see a few here and there. If I had come just a little later, I probably would've missed them entirely. Blessed with good luck again! The weather this time fluctuated quite a bit because it was right between seasons, but during the days I visited, it stayed chilly—both day and night—feeling like around 15°C. Takayama is located in Gifu Prefecture, in the Chubu region, just a 2-hour drive from Nagoya. Coming by train or bus is also super convenient—you can depart directly from Nagoya. Because it's so close to Nagoya, Takayama is one of the top destinations for travelers visiting the Chubu region.
