Lunch close to the Waseda sky and a tranquil garden of learning Passing through Waseda, I came across Okuma Auditorium, the symbol of Waseda University. This time, I had lunch at Restaurant Mori no Kaze, located just behind it on the top floor (26th floor) of Building 26, Okuma Garden Tower. From nearly 100 meters above ground, the view is so serene it's hard to believe you're in the heart of the city. On a clear day, you can see the skyscrapers of Shinjuku Subcenter and even Mount Fuji in the distance. The lunch menu mainly consists of Japanese-Western fusion sets priced around 1,500 yen. They also offer a "Seasonal Colorful Meal" (Japanese-style meal), but I ordered mentaiko pasta. My friend enjoyed the comforting combination of colorful vegetables, carefully simmered dishes, grilled fish, rice, and miso soup. The high-quality space and food set it apart from student cafeterias. After eating, I took the elevator back down to ground level and headed to Okuma Garden (free and open to the public), located behind the building. This hidden urban garden features a tranquil pond, a teahouse, and pleasantly shady walking paths. It's also a popular resting spot for Waseda students, with many students reading on benches and chatting away in tranquil surroundings. We also visited the nearby Waseda University History Museum (Waseda Campus Building 1). With carefully curated exhibits showcasing materials on the university's founder, Okuma Shigenobu, and the careers of its graduates, it's a spot sure to stimulate intellectual curiosity. Admission is also free, which is a plus. We also recommend strolling through the used bookstores on Waseda Street and the sweet shop "Tsuzurao." Today is September 15th, and I participated in the monthly festival at the Inner Shrine of Isehara Daijingu from 8am. I offered a Tamakushi to the great deity and made a formal bow, two claps, one bow. From 11am, I participated in the Segaki ceremony at Daifukuji Temple in the city. It is an annual event where all the parishioners gather in the temple grounds, listen to a sermon by the head priest, and replace the old stupas with new ones. It seems that as you approach 70, you just can't help but participate in Buddhist and divine events❣️
