Taking the kids to escape the summer heat in August: 4 places I've personally tested that are less crowded and cheaper.
01 Wuzhong | Ningxia
In August, Wuzhong experiences a surprisingly large temperature difference between day and night. The sun is blazing during the day, but it cools down as soon as you step into the shade. The breeze from the Yellow River is much more comfortable than air conditioning.
📍 Qingtongxia Yellow River Grand Canyon Tourist Area: It's recommended to arrive before 9:00 AM. First, take a boat trip to see the Yellow River bend. The water is wide, and the mountains on both sides are sculpted into layers by the water. Children will shout out when they see the sign "Jiangnan Beyond the Great Wall." The boat ticket is included in the scenic area package, about 120 yuan. Children under 1.2 meters are free.
⏰ Don't eat lunch in the scenic area. Drive back to the city and eat at Guoqiang Hand-Pulled Noodles. Wuzhong has a rich morning tea culture; eight-treasure tea with beef patties is something even children can enjoy. In the afternoon, when the sun is at its strongest, go back to the hotel for a nap. In the evening, go to the Yellow River Tower to watch the sunset. Once the lights come on, the whole city becomes gentle and beautiful.
⚠️ A reminder: There are many steps in the canyon scenic area, making strollers impractical. It's recommended to carry children in a baby carrier or let older children walk. If you're traveling with elderly people, just take the boat ride and don't climb the mountain; you can still see everything.
02 Jilin
Songhua Lake and Wusong Island are completely different in summer. There's no ice, but everything is lush and green, and the air is filled with the scent of pine resin.
🚄 It takes about half an hour by taxi from Jilin Station to Songhua Lake. Take a boat from the pier; a round-trip ticket costs 60 yuan. The lake is cool, but the wind picks up quickly once the boat starts moving, so bring a light jacket for children. Wuhu Island on the lake has simple amusement facilities; children can play for an hour, while adults can sit, drink cold drinks, and enjoy the water without getting tired.
⚠️ Wusong Island is best viewed in winter for its rime ice. Going in August mainly allows you to see the wetlands and reed beds. If you're short on time, you can just visit Songhua Lake and save Wusong Island for winter. If you absolutely must go, arrive in the evening to see the sunset turn the water golden. Be aware of the mosquitoes, so bring mosquito repellent patches.
🍜 For dinner, head back to the city for fried rice noodles, a Jilin specialty. It's like cold noodles fried and then topped with sesame sauce; the kids love mixing it with rice. Our hotel is near Songjiang Middle Road; a stroll along the river in the evening offers a night view that rivals Shanghai.
03 Quzhou|Zhejiang
Quzhou is a small city I secretly love. In August, it's less crowded, prices are lower, and kids who love spicy food will go crazy.
📍 Kaihua Root Palace Buddhist Kingdom: Entrance fee 120 yuan. The place is so large you could spend a whole day there. Even without seeing the root carvings and Buddha statues, the gardens alone are worth the price. Pavilions, waterside terraces, and shady trees make you want to sit down every few steps. The root carving art museum has a sculpture of 500 Arhats; kids will play by counting them.
⏰ Jianglang Mountain must be visited after 4 PM to avoid the midday sun. The section of the narrow "One Line Sky" is very narrow; don't laugh if a larger person gets stuck—someone has actually gotten stuck. For families with children, the halfway up the mountain path is sufficient. The view from the summit is beautiful, but the steps are too steep, so it's not recommended for young children to attempt it.
🍜 Entry to Ershibadu Ancient Town is free, but don't miss the copper gong cake and swallow skin wontons. The town is small; a complete walk around takes about two hours. In the evening, the light shining on the old walls makes for great photos without filters. For accommodation, choose a guesthouse in Ershibadu Town; you'll have mountain views right outside your window, and at night it's so quiet you can only hear the stream.
04 Suizhou|Hubei
Suizhou's Dahong Mountain has an average August temperature seven or eight degrees Celsius lower than the city center; you'll need a blanket at night.
⚠️ Avoid weekends; it's crowded with people and cars, and the mountain roads will be congested. Go on a weekday; the entrance fee is 95 yuan, and you can drive directly into the scenic area without transferring, making it much easier with children.
📍 The core attractions are the Golden Summit and the Two Kings Cave. The Golden Summit requires climbing over a thousand steps; children with good stamina can try. From the top, you can see the entire mountain range. Liangwang Cave is a natural karst cave; the temperature inside is around 15 degrees Celsius year-round. Wear long sleeves inside, and don't let children wait at the entrance in shorts, as the cold wind will make them catch a chill.
🏨 For accommodation, I recommend the Ginkgo Valley Inn outside the mountain gate. A standard room is just over 200 yuan, and the window offers mountain views. For dinner, order stir-fried cured pork with bamboo shoots and chicken soup at the inn; the portions are generous, and two dishes are enough for a family of three.
⏰ Get up at 5 am the next morning to watch the sunrise. The chances of a sea of clouds are high, and the mist rises from the foot of the mountain, making children feel like they're on an airplane.
05 Chengde|Hebei
The Chengde Mountain Resort lives up to its name. In August, as soon as you enter, the lake breeze mixed with the shade of the trees makes the perceived temperature drop by five degrees.
📍 The entrance fee to the Mountain Resort is 130 yuan. Upon entering, take the shuttle bus (50 yuan per person), which saves you a lot of energy. The lake area is the highlight; the Misty Rain Pavilion and Wenjin Pavilion are worth stopping at. Children can spend half an hour feeding the fish by the lake. It's recommended to skip the mountain area, as it takes two hours to walk there, and it's sunny and tiring.
⚠️ The Mountain Resort gets very crowded in the afternoon, with tour groups everywhere. Try to enter as early as 8 am when it opens. For families with elderly people and children, the palace area and lake area are sufficient; the entire route is flat and strollers are not an obstacle.
🚄 The next day, visit the Jinshanling Great Wall, a 1.5-hour drive from the city. This section of the Great Wall is wilder than Badaling, with fewer tourists. The steps have been repaired but are still uneven, so you'll need to hold hands with young children. Looking back from the General's Tower, the rolling mountains and the wind blowing your hair wildly at the crenellations will make your child ask, "Did people really fight here in the past?"
🍜 For dinner, we went back to the city and ate at Chengde Lao San Lamb Soup. Lamb offal soup with sesame flatbread cost 20 yuan and we were stuffed. The kids don't eat lamb, so we went to a nearby oat noodle shop for stir-fried oat noodles with pickled cabbage, which was also delicious.
06 Beihai | Guangxi
Beihai is hot in August, but the sea breeze makes it feel less sweltering. The key is Weizhou Island; it's half the crowd and half the cost compared to Sanya.
🚄 Take a ferry from Beihai International Passenger Port to Weizhou Island. A standard cabin costs 150 yuan, and the journey takes 70 minutes. Take seasickness medication half an hour beforehand; don't regret it once you're on the ferry. The island entrance fee is 98 yuan, and renting an electric cart costs 60 yuan per day. If you're traveling with children, I recommend hiring a sightseeing bus for 200 yuan per day; the driver also acts as a guide, saving you time and hassle.
📍 A must-see on the island is Crocodile Mountain Crater. The boardwalk is built along the coast, and the waves crashing against the rocks are mesmerizing for kids. The beaches of Dripstone Peak are great for sand digging, and you can find small crabs after the tide goes out in the evening. However, don't let children go barefoot, as there are barnacles on the rocks that can easily cause cuts.
⏰ Watch the sunset at Shiluokou Beach. Arrive at 6:30 PM, find a large rock to sit on, and watch the sun sink into the sea – the whole beach will applaud! In the evening, eat at the seafood market on Nanwan Street. Buy your seafood at the market and have it cooked at a local restaurant. The cooking fee is 15-25 yuan per dish, and you can eat your fill of scallops and oysters for only 80 yuan per person.
⚠️ Choose accommodation in Dripstone Village on the island; it's close to the beach and quiet at night. Don't stay near the pier, as the ship horns entering the harbor will wake you up.
07 Qujing|Yunnan
Qujing is a hidden gem in Yunnan. August is the tail end of the rainy season, so the rapeseed flowers haven't bloomed yet, but the grasslands and waterfalls are in full bloom.
📍 Luoping Rapeseed Flower Fields: Don't go there just for the flowers; go in August to see the grasslands and karst peaks. The Jiulong Waterfalls are the main attraction. Tickets are 65 yuan. The waterfalls cascade down in layers, and when the water volume is high, the power is awe-inspiring. For children, just walk down the bottom layer; climbing the top involves over 300 steps and is tiring.
⚠️ There's a stretch of road from the Jiulong Waterfalls parking lot to the scenic area entrance. Locals will try to offer horse-drawn carriages for 10 yuan per person, but it's only a ten-minute walk, so don't waste your money.
🍜 Go to the Jinji Peak viewing platform in the afternoon. It's shrouded in mist, like an ink painting. After that, drive directly to the Duoyi River. The water is crystal clear, and children can take off their shoes and wade in the water. The pebbles on the riverbank are smooth and safe. In the evening, return to Luoping County for a clay pot rice dish—pork stew with potatoes and rice, with crispy rice crust. The kids ate two bowls!
⏰ Qujing is at a high altitude, so August evenings are cool. Bring long sleeves and pants. The UV radiation is strong, so reapply sunscreen every two hours. A hat is more convenient than an umbrella because of the wind.
08 Jiangmen | Guangdong
Jiangmen isn't a popular tourist city, but the Kaiping Diaolou (watchtowers) are definitely worth visiting. August in Guangdong is hot, but the Diaolou are cool and shady, like being in an air-conditioned room.
📍 The Kaiping Diaolou Cultural Tourism Area, with Zili Village as its core, costs 78 yuan for admission. The Diaolou are defensive dwellings built by overseas Chinese, and the furniture and photos from that era are still preserved inside. Children will be curious about why the buildings are so tall. The top floor of Mingshi Tower offers the best view, overlooking the entire rice paddy and the scattered Diaolou clusters.
⏰ Enter Zili Village after 5 pm. The sunlight shines obliquely on the Diaolou, giving the walls a golden hue; no filters are needed for photos. The paths in the rice paddies are walkable, but avoid wearing sandals, as the ridges are muddy and you'll get dirty easily.
🚄 The next day, visit Chikan Overseas Chinese Ancient Town, which is free to enter. The town is built along the Tanjiang River, and the arcade streets are well-preserved, making it more authentic than Yongqingfang in Guangzhou. In the afternoon, we ate eel rice at a riverside food stall. It was 35 yuan a pot, and the crispy rice crust was delicious. My child ate a whole bowl with soy sauce.
⚠️ Jiangmen summers often have showers, so carry an umbrella. It gets even hotter after the rain, so don't let your child run around for too long and make sure they drink plenty of water. For accommodation, I recommend Kaiping city center; hotels are around 200 yuan, have great air conditioning, and are a 20-minute drive from the scenic area.
In August, when traveling with kids, don't waste money on crowded popular tourist spots. These eight places are cool, cheap, and less crowded, ensuring a fun-filled experience for both children and adults. Which ones have you taken your kids to?
