This mountain is deceptive; it looks crowded, but it's actually empty!
This is a 4A-rated scenic area with an elevation of under 300 meters. Fulai Peak, Folai Peak, and Feilai Peak embrace one another, and the deep forest is filled with ancient charm. Looking at the hillside from afar, rows of statues are scattered about. Visually, it looks like the mountain is full of people, but when you get closer, you realize it's the 500 Arhat statues. In reality, there are very few tourists, and it's very quiet. It's a great place to immerse yourself in the deep culture of the Ju region. The forest coverage is high, making it a nice natural oxygen bar.
The scenic area is located at No. 1001 Fulai West Road, Fulai Mountain Subdistrict, Ju County, Rizhao City. It is open year-round from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Ticket sales and entry stop at 4:30 PM. All attractions within the scenic area are included in the general admission ticket, with no additional fees. The core feature of the scenic area is the profound ancient Ju culture. It boasts a 4,000-year-old ginkgo tree, a temple from the Northern and Southern Dynasties, the largest outdoor collection of 500 colored Arhat statues in the country, and the Guinness-certified "King of Sandalwood Roots" wood carving. It also features ancient architecture where Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism merge. The terrain is gentle, making it suitable for a leisurely stroll, and it's easy for both seniors and children to visit.
For self-driving, navigate directly to the East Gate of Fulai Mountain Scenic Area. Take the Rilan Expressway and exit at the Ju County exit. You will arrive at the scenic area after driving west for about 10 minutes. The main parking lot at the East Gate costs 10 yuan per day with no time limit. The South Gate parking lot also charges 10 yuan per visit. Parking at the East Gate can be tight during holidays, so consider parking at the South Gate. For public transportation, you can take bus No. 1 or No. 6 from Ju County to the East Gate of the scenic area for 2 yuan. For out-of-town visitors arriving by high-speed rail at Juxian North Station, a taxi ride to the scenic area costs 15 to 20 yuan and takes about 10 minutes. If coming from downtown Rizhao, you can take the C202 intercity bus to Ju County and then transfer to a local bus to the scenic area. If you don't want to wait for the bus, you can also take a taxi directly.
The first must-visit attraction is the "First Ginkgo Tree in the World," located in the front courtyard of Dinglin Temple. It is nearly 4,000 years old and requires eight people holding hands to encircle it. The tree is 26.7 meters tall, lush, and a precious living fossil. The rulers of the Ju and Lu states once held an alliance under this tree during the Spring and Autumn period. In autumn, when the leaves turn yellow, the ground is covered in gold, creating a perfect atmosphere for photos. The second is Dinglin Temple, built during the Northern and Southern Dynasties over 1,500 years ago. It is one of the oldest surviving ancient temples in Shandong and the place where the literary theorist Liu Xie spent his later years editing scriptures and practicing. The Scripture Editing Pavilion in the temple preserves and displays various versions of "The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons." The temple courtyard is quiet and simple, with ancient steles and trees throughout. The third is the Chinese Root-Seeking Hall, which displays over 50 large root carvings. The treasure of the hall, the "King of Sandalwood Roots," is 8,000 years old and holds a Shanghai Great World Guinness Record. The root carving is massive with weathered textures, offering a strong visual impact that echoes the thousand-year-old ginkgo tree outside. The fourth is the 500 Arhat Statues, the largest outdoor collection of 500 colored Arhat statues in the country. Numerous Arhat statues are scattered across the wooded slopes, each with different expressions and poses. From a distance, the hillside looks densely packed, creating the peculiar scene mentioned at the beginning where it looks crowded but is actually empty. Walking among the statues, the forest is filled with a Zen atmosphere. The fifth is the Three Religions Hall, the only ancient building in Shandong that combines Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism. It houses the statues of sages from all three traditions within the same courtyard. The architectural layout is unique and preserves many ancient steles, reflecting the inclusive and integrated ancient culture of the Ju region.
A light tour takes about 3 to 4 hours. We recommend entering from the East Gate, first visiting the 500 Arhat Statues, walking slowly along the forest path to view the statues, then heading to Dinglin Temple to visit the "First Ginkgo Tree in the World" and the Scripture Editing Pavilion. After seeing the ancient temple, move to the Three Religions Hall, then visit the Chinese Root-Seeking Hall to see the root carvings, and finally walk back down along the gentle mountain path. The entire mountain slope is very gentle with almost no steep steps; most of the path is flat forest road. There are many stone benches along the way for resting, so even those with average stamina can easily finish the tour. If you don't want to walk, you can purchase a ride on the scenic electric shuttle for 15 yuan per person.
For special experiences, during holidays, the scenic area features traditional folk performances, where you can see traditional Ju music and dance. At certain times, there is also an experience of tying red prayer ribbons. Leisure activities include alpine grass sliding, which is suitable for family relaxation, and there are small leisure parks in the forest to stroll around. The natural scenery has different highlights in each season: in spring and summer, the forest is lush, cool, and comfortable, perfect for escaping the heat and getting some fresh air; in late autumn, from late October to November, the "First Ginkgo Tree in the World" turns completely golden, making it the best time of year to visit; after snow in winter, the ancient temple and trees covered in snow create a full, serene atmosphere.
Regarding the scenic area and its surroundings, there are many farmhouse-style shops at the entrance where you can eat pancake rolls with green onions and Ju County jelly, which are simple options for a quick meal. For classic Ju County cuisine, we highly recommend the Ju County whole lamb soup; the soup is clear, the lamb is tender, and it is served with local large flatbread, making it a local signature dish. There is also the "Hutu Feast" consisting of Hutu chicken and Hutu fish, as well as Baodu (tripe), fried lotus root boxes, and brown sugar rice cakes, all of which are representative local dishes. The portions are generally large, so you may want to control the amount when ordering.

Tips: First, try to enter the park in the morning when the light is good and there are fewer tourists, and to avoid the afternoon heat. Be sure to pay attention to the ticket stop time and don't arrive near closing time. Second, although the mountain is not steep, the forest trails are long, so try to wear comfortable flat shoes. There is a large temperature difference between morning and evening in the mountains, so bring a light jacket. Third, the "First Ginkgo Tree in the World" is a key protected ancient tree; climbing, carving on the trunk, or pulling branches is prohibited. Fourth, if driving during holidays, try to arrive early as the East Gate parking lot fills up easily. You can park at the South Gate and walk into the park.
