Nepal wasn’t originally high on my travel list, but after visiting, I couldn’t understand why I had waited so long. I started in Kathmandu, where ancient temples, busy streets, and tiny local shops seemed to exist side by side. Walking around Durbar Square was one of my favorite moments because every corner had another piece of history. I later visited Swayambhunath, the famous Monkey Temple, and climbed the steps early in the morning. The view over Kathmandu Valley was worth the effort and yes, the monkeys were everywhere. From Kathmandu, I headed to Pokhara, which felt completely different. The peaceful atmosphere around Phewa Lake was exactly what I needed after the chaos of the capital. One morning, I watched the sunrise from Sarangkot, with the Himalayas slowly appearing in the distance. I also explored Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha, and spent time at Chitwan National Park, where I was lucky enough to see rhinos during a jungle safari. Nepal wasn’t just about mountains for me. It was the people, the food, the temples, and the unexpected quiet moments between adventures. One of my favorite places to shop for Souvenirs in Kathmandu, Nepal. While resting from the long days of walking in the Himalayas, eating, and sight seeing, browsing the shops is super relaxing. Also around most of the interesting sight seeing areas in Kathmandu are lots of great shopping too. Of course it is necessary to go down the side streets of deep into the shopping bazzarrs to find the really funky shops. I suggest the shops in the Boudnath district in front of the enormous stupa, around the stupa and also the alleys behind. There are lots of good Tibetan restaurants in the area. Also look out for Yak cheese, momos and butter tea. The area below Swayambhnath has some nice religious shops and some good tourist type shops. There are a couple of hipster type coffee bars and a few nice places with a terrace for a cold beer. Thamel district is the trekker and tourist central and therefore has a high concentration of artisan shops, bookstores, jewelry merchants, hiking equipment suppliers, decorations, paper crafts, wool wares and metal statues. Even the small mom and pop shops, can some amazing finds on the back shelf. Thamel has restaurants with foods from all around the world but I recommend looking out for places that do the trekkers breakfast and start the day with that! This place I really like to visit in kathmandu is the city center proper. This is where most Nepali goods can be found. It is more for consumer goods like shoes, clothes, household, electronics, wholesale suppliers, fabris, saris, eyeglasses, sports equipment, motorbikes, furniture, daily household items ,( think metal pots, clay bowls, wooden dishes) and of course food and food products. There are some unbelievable bargains and some of the stuff is really good quality. This hike in Nepal had the most mind blowing views. The mountains are so massive and stand at an outrageous altitude. Makalu itself is about 8481 meters above sea level. I viewed it while walking in the Makalu Barun National Park but it sits both in Nepal and China. The hiking was fantastic with gorgeous mountain#nepal views and herds of yaks in the alpine fields. Most of the trail follows a river valley and glacier that lead to glacial lake below Makalu mountain. There is a small settlement that caters to hikers and mountain climbers it is aptly called Makalu Base Camp. Here it is possible to see how massive an 8481 meter mountain is, it stands behind me in the cover photograph! The picture is taken on a small hill above Makalu Base Camp at 5600 meters. Of course this hike requires a Hiking permit and National Park pass. I would also recommend a warm sleeping bag, comfortable hiking shoes or boots, a rain jacket, a down jacket, lots of extra socks, a warm hat because it does get cold high up in the mountains. Maybe hiring a porter to carry your backpack would be nice because walking with a 15 kilogram backpack is hard work. The good thing is there are lots of Tea houses along the way that provide food, drink and rooms to sleep in. They are like small mountain inns run by local Nepali people. Most of them are really great because of the friendly nature of the people and the professional approach to providing a service for the hikers! This hike is not as busy as the Everest Base Camp trek so if you're looking for a hidden secret this is it. I was in awe of those massive mountains and some on the way up walking alongside the grazing Yaks was surreal for sure! #worthitornot Chandragiri Hill was one of the most breathtaking places I visited near Kathmandu. The cable car ride itself was an unforgettable experience, slowly climbing above the forest and revealing spectacular views with every passing minute. Once I reached the top, I was rewarded with fresh mountain air and an incredible panoramic view stretching across the Kathmandu Valley. On a clear day, you can even see the majestic Himalayan peaks in the distance, making the viewpoint feel truly special. I spent quite a while simply enjoying the peaceful surroundings, taking photos, and appreciating the contrast between the bustling city below and the quiet atmosphere on the hill. I recommend visiting early in the morning when visibility is usually at its best and the crowds are smaller. Bring a light jacket, as it can feel much cooler at the summit than in the city. The Basque cheesecake is a must, and the grilled chicken rose pasta is just as good. 🥟 Regal Flavours, Durbar Marg If you want to try authentic Nepali food, this is the place. I'd highly recommend the chicken or mutton Thakali set and the jhol momo. 🥭 Mira Boulangerie, Durbar Marg Perfect for a coffee break. The mango coconut cake is unreal, and their freshly made bagels are definitely worth trying. 🍕 Sicily by Ts A great spot when you're craving comfort food. Go for the pepperoni pizza and the chilli chicken, both were absolute winners. If you're only in Kathmandu for a few days, these are the places I'd happily go back to again and again. Places to visit: · 🌄 Nagarkot View Tower – The best spot for panoramic Himalayan views. · 🌿Nagarkot Nature Trail – A scenic walk with plenty of viewpoints along the way. · 🌉 Rani Jhula – A beautiful suspension bridge that's great for a short walk and photos. · 🕊️Buddha Peace Park – A quiet place to relax and soak in the surroundings. For lunch, I'd definitely recommend Mandapgiri Restaurant. The food is lovely, and the mountain views make it even better. If you decide to stay overnight, Hotel at the End of the Universe, Hotel Himalayan Villa, and Peaceful Cottage & Café du Mont are all great value and highly rated. As the name suggests, its proximity to the airport is a huge plus! ✔️ Approximately 5-10 minutes by car from the airport ✔️ Late-night check-in available ✔️ Airport transfer available (reservation required) For an exhausted body, this "proximity" was truly a blessing. The room was decorated with a photo of Boudhanath, which immediately boosted my spirits! It was clean and I slept very well ◎ The shower had hot water. 🚿 Wi-Fi worked without any problems! And above all, the staff were so kind 🥹 I received a watermelon welcome drink at check-in ✨ They spoke English, and it was a huge relief to feel at ease right after arriving. Highly recommended for anyone needing a one-night stay when arriving in or departing from Kathmandu, or those worried about late-night arrivals. Our guide, Shambhu Subedi, was incredibly helpful and attentive, taking great care of us throughout the journey. He is professional, kind, smart, and funny, making his company enjoyable and never boring. Shambhu consistently shared his knowledge about the mountains, enhancing the experience. Overall, this trek was truly outstanding.

Stayed here for one night while waiting for my connecting flight the next day. This is a newly opened hotel in Kathmandu, with rooms that are modern and comfortable. The lobby has a playful and refreshing design, and their rooftop swimming pool provides a stunning panoramic view of Kathmandu and the former palace. Notably, the staff is extremely responsive and friendly. I truly felt welcome and would consider returning here on my next visit to Kathmandu. It is one of the three Durbar Squares in Kathmandu recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, also known as Basantapur Durbar and Hanuman Dhoka. Situated in the heart of Old Kathmandu city near the Thamel area, it houses several palaces, courtyards, and temples. The square features nearly 50 temples, including the tallest one, “Teleju Temple,” which boasts nine floors. From intricately carved woodwork to stunning stone masterpieces, every detail showcases timeless craftsmanship and devotion. Each temple has its own unique story and is beautifully constructed. The square also includes an attractive white Palace built during the British era, adding to its rich and fascinating history. Exploring the square thoroughly could take almost a day, but we managed to cover it in around two hours with the help of a guide who shared the history in an engaging way. Surrounding the square are numerous cafés and food stalls offering a space to relax and reflect on Nepal’s rich history. A visit with comfortable shoes and a curious heart is highly recommended to fully appreciate the stories and make the experience memorable and enriching.
