You don’t need to drive to explore some of the Lake District’s most beautiful lakes. 🚆🚌 Here are 5 of my favourites and how to reach them by public transport. 1️⃣ Windermere 🌊 🚆 Windermere Station From the station, take the 599 to Bowness, or walk around 30 minutes to the lake. Windermere is the easiest lake to reach by train. 2️⃣ Derwentwater 🏔️ 🚆 Penrith Station Take the X4/X5 bus to Keswick, then walk down to the lake. You can also take the Keswick Launch to explore different parts of Derwentwater. 3️⃣ Ullswater 🌿 🚆 Penrith Station From Penrith, take the 508 towards Glenridding/Patterdale, or the 509 from Keswick. In summer, the UB1/UB2 Ullswater Bus connects the main villages and attractions. 4️⃣ Coniston Water 🚤 🚆 Windermere Station Take the 505 through Ambleside and Hawkshead to Coniston. You can then explore the lake by foot or take the Coniston Launch. 5️⃣ Buttermere 🏔️ 🚆 Penrith Station → Keswick Take the X4/X5 to Keswick, then connect towards Buttermere. In summer 2026, the 77/77A connects Keswick and Buttermere, while the 77C shuttle runs between Cockermouth and Buttermere on selected days. 💡 Good to know: the Lake District is surprisingly easy to explore without a car, but check timetables before travelling because some routes are seasonal. #itinerarycheck I did the classic Glenridding–Striding Edge–Helvellyn–Swirral Edge loop on a Saturday in late May, starting at 7:40 a.m. from the main Glenridding pay-and-display car park (around £9 for the day; by 9 a.m. it was nearly full). The route is about 13 km and took me 6h20 with breaks. I’d call it a Grade 1 scramble, not a hike—anyone with a fear of heights or no mountain experience should not treat it as a casual day out. From the car park you follow Mires Beck up to the “Hole-in-the-Wall” in the drystone wall. That first climb is relentless but obvious. The real test begins at Striding Edge: the ridge starts broad, then narrows to a knife-edge with steep drops both sides. I stayed on the crest except for the final rock step (“The Chimney”), where I down-climbed on the right and regrouped. In wind over 40 mph or in cloud, I would not do this—the summit plateau is featureless and navigation gets nasty fast. Helvellyn summit (950 m) was busy but cold; I ate behind the stone shelter. Descent via Swirral Edge is shorter and steeper than Striding Edge, with loose rock near the top, then a long walk back down past Red Tarn Beck to Glenridding. Must-bring: boots with ankle support, full waterproofs, 2 L water, map OS OL5 + compass, power bank, headtorch. Common mistake: starting late and underestimating the descent. My opinion—go up by 8 a.m., check Mountain Weather forecast, and skip it entirely if rain or high wind is predicted. Ullswater Steamers at Glenridding pier are a nice recovery if legs still work.

You can hop on and off at different jetties, making it easy to combine a boat trip with walks. 🥾 Walk to Friar’s Crag : one of the easiest viewpoints but with one of the most beautiful views over Derwentwater and the surrounding fells. If you want a bigger challenge: ⛰️ Catbells is one of the most popular walks near Keswick, offering incredible panoramic views over the lake and mountains. 🌤️ Day 2: Explore Borrowdale Valley Take the bus (or better -walk)from Keswick into Borrowdale Valley: one of the most scenic areas in the Lake District. 🚌 The 78 bus runs through Borrowdale towards Rosthwaite and Seatoller. Things to do: 🌿 Walk through the valley surrounded by dramatic mountains 🌉 Visit Ashness Bridge, one of the most photographed spots in the Lake District 🌊 Stop at viewpoints overlooking Derwentwater. This is the kind of place where you don’t need a packed schedule,the scenery does the work. 🌧️ Day 3: Rainy day in Keswick The Lake District is famous for unpredictable weather, so it helps to have a backup plan. ☔ ☕ Spend time in cafés, browse outdoor shops, and enjoy the slower side of the town. 📍 Penrith Railway Station, Cumbria If you're travelling to the Lake District by train, Penrith Railway Station is one of the easiest places to start your adventure. Sitting on the West Coast Main Line, it's just around 3 hours from London Euston on a direct train, making it one of the fastest ways to reach the Northern Lakes without a car. What makes Penrith convenient is that it's connected to some of the Lake District's most popular destinations: 🚌 Keswick – take the X4 or X5 (around 40 minutes). 🌿 Borrowdale Valley – take the X4 or X5 to Keswick, then change to the 78 for villages such as Rosthwaite or Seatoller (around 1 hour 15 minutes in total). 🚤 Ullswater (Pooley Bridge) – take the 508 (seasonal) or 509 (around 20–25 minutes). 🏞️This time, I stayed at the Station Hotel, directly opposite the station, before continuing my journey to the beautiful Borrowdale Valley the following morning. It was the perfect overnight stop after arriving from London. the station is overlooked by the ruins of Penrith Castle. Built in the late 14th century to help defend the English border against Scottish raids, it's only a 2-minute walk from the station, making it one of the easiest castles to visit as soon as you arrive. We started with a simple plan: walk to Portinscale. No hills 📈, no rush ⏰—just a gentle riverside amble with the fells for company. 🏔️ From the start, the path followed the River Derwent 🌊, its shallow waters glinting in the June light ☀️. Ahead, the mountains rose like a painted backdrop—Skiddaw 🗻 to the north, the bulk of Catbells across the valley. The grass either side was dotted with sheep 🐑🐏, quietly grazing like they owned the place. Soon we reached the highlight: the footbridge 🌉. A modern replacement for the medieval "Old Long Bridge" that once stood here, it now carries walkers over the river with views up and down the Derwent. A few more minutes of riverside strolling 🚶♂️🚶♀️, and we were there—Portinscale 🏘️. Tiny, pretty, and quietly perfect. Sometimes the best walks aren't about conquering peaks ⛰️❌. -Jasper's Coffee House- Jasper's Coffee House in Keswick is a charming gem tucked near the market square. My family, our dog, and I (a group of six!) were welcomed with ease. The café has a cosy, artsy atmosphere with cute decorations-many of which are for sale! I had the avocado and poached egg on toast-possibly the best I've had. You can even add an extra egg for £1.50. My sister enjoyed her hash browns with chorizo, cheese, sweet chilli sauce, and an egg-though she'd skip the sweet chilli next time. The portions were perfect, and though we were too full for dessert, the cakes looked incredible. It's super dog-friendly, even featuring a Polaroid wall of pups and puddings! Staff were young, helpful, and genuinely kind. One tip: ask for a menu- don't go rooting through the art like I did! All in all, a fantastic visit. #spas I recently stayed at the Lodore Falls Hotel & Spa in the stunning Lake District, and it was an unforgettable experience! Nestled by Derwentwater, the location is picture-perfect, with views of both the lake and the dramatic surrounding fells. The real highlight for me was the spa—access is included with your stay, but if you’re just visiting for the day, the spa entry is around £35. The outdoor hydrotherapy pool was amazing, especially with the backdrop of the mountains. The hotel itself is elegant, and the rooms were cozy and comfortable. Helvellyn is the highest mountain in Lake District. As a hiking lover, how could I not going there when I visit Lake District. I took the bus from Ambleside to Windermere, and then to the start point. The best way to go is definitely drive, or I would suggest to check the bus time before you go because there’s limited bus service and it takes about 6-7.5 hours to go to the top. The view is absolutely stunning, can’t deal 😭

I think Keswick is one of those places where you barely need an itinerary. The landscapes do most of the work. 🌿 🌊 Derwentwater right beside the town ⛰️ Mountains rising all around the lake 🌲 Woodland paths and quiet corners 🥾 Walks from easy lakeside strolls to bigger climbs 🌉 Little bridges, viewpoints and villages to discover One of my favourite things is how quickly the scenery changes. You can be walking through Keswick, then minutes later you’re beside the lake with mountains reflected in the water. And if you’re lucky with the weather, the views can be incredible. ☀️ Even on a rainy day, though, Keswick has its own atmosphere. 🌧️ The clouds sitting over the fells make everything feel completely different. 💡 If you’re visiting the Lake District without a car, Keswick is also a really convenient base for exploring the surrounding landscape. #easytravelpost Honister Pass (356 m) connects Borrowdale to Buttermere, 1.5 hrs from Keswick, steep 1:4 gradients both sides — buses don't cross, you need a car or bike (Honister Slate Mine runs its own 4×4 shuttle from Seatoller £8). The mine tour is £32/adult (90 min underground, hard hat + headtorch), the Infinity Bridge high-wire £40, the zip 1,200 m £110; café and slate-gift shop free to enter. I drove from Keswick at 08:00, parked at the mine (free for customers, £4 for lookers), did the 09:30 mine tour. The mossy bit isn't underground — it's the old tramway ledge above the mine: Westmorland limestone wall-tops with Rhytidiadelphus 2 cm thick, 7°C in March, a raven off the crags, the Buttermere valley laid out 300 m below. After the tour I walked 20 min down the Borrowdale side to the mossy sheep-fold where the slate spoil grows Polytrichum in orange-stained tufts. Ate a £5 mine-café bacon bap, drank a £3.50 pot of tea on the terrace where the moss on the café's drystone base was still wet at 10:40. Mistake: I drove Honister westbound (Buttermere→Borrowdale) in a Fiesta in November — ice on the 1:4 grade, had to reverse 200 m to a passing place; eastbound ascent from Seatoller is saner, or bike it. Another: the £32 tour is cash-or-card but the 4×4 shuttle is cash only. Would you pay £32 for the Honister slate-mine tour + mossy tramway-ledger view over Buttermere, or skip the mine and just walk the free Moss Force fall above the pass instead?

#easytravelpost Helvellyn (950 m) is the Lake District's most-walked 3,000-footer. I based in Glenridding, parked at the village pay car park (£9/day, card), and took the Greenside path to Red Tarn—3 km, 2 hrs, 600 m gain. The moss stretch is the 1 km above Lanty's Tarn where the path seeps and the clubmoss carpets the ledges; by Red Tarn (720 m, under the east face cliffs) I was at 08:10 with the crags glowing. Striding Edge is the famous arete from Red Tarn to the summit—Class 1 scramble, exposure on both sides, not for wind days. I did Red Tarn→Striding Edge→summit→Swirral Edge→back, 5 hrs loop. No park entry fee (Lake District NP is free), but the Glenridding lot is the only reliable pay point; the roadside pull-offs get ticketed. Mistake: I did Striding Edge in a 50 km/h gust and crawled on my arse for 100 m—check the Met Office Helm Wind warning, avoid the edge Nov–Mar. Another: I carried 1 L and cramped at Red Tarn; 2 L, the tarn isn't drinkable untreated. Would you take Striding Edge for the adrenaline, or climb via the mossy Greenside path and descend Swirral for the quieter rim?

If you’re in Keswick and the weather is looking miserable, this is one walk I’d still do. 🌧️🥾 The Keswick to Threlkeld Railway Trail starts near Keswick Leisure Centre, just beyond Fitz Park, and follows the old railway line for about 5 km to Threlkeld. It’s mostly flat, tarmac and easy to walk, with woodland, the River Greta, old railway bridges and a tunnel along the way. 🌲🌉 And the best part? You don’t have to walk back! 🚌 From Threlkeld, you can catch the X4 or X5 back to Keswick. The 509 also serves Threlkeld during the summer. 🚍 So you can get your Lake District walk in without committing to a big fell hike, even when it’s raining. 📍 Buttermere, Lake District Buttermere is one of those places that feels properly remote, but getting there without a car takes some planning. 🚌🏔️ 🚌 From Keswick: Take the 77 or 77A towards Buttermere. The route loops through the valley and gives you several stops around the lake, including Buttermere village and Gatesgarth Farm. 🥾 The lake walk: The circular route is around 7 km / 4.5 miles and takes roughly 2–3 hours, depending on stops and photos. 📸 🎨 There’s even an art connection. J. M. W. Turner painted Buttermere in 1798, capturing the lake and surrounding landscape. And I can see why it inspired him. The mountains, calm water and feeling of being away from everything make Buttermere one of the most beautiful corners of the Lake District. 🌊 The transport might take a little more effort, but the scenery is the reward.
