After experiencing the pure white awe of Mount Klakkur, we drove non-stop to the pier, ready to board the highly anticipated ferry and take our car along to the mysterious Kalsoy Island. Taking one last look at the fading port of Klaksvík, with its colorful little houses beautifully dotted at the foot of the snow-capped mountains (Photo 5), we knew what came next: a magical time of wind and waves out on the open sea. 🌊 A Healing Polar Theater Swaying in the Fjords The "Moving Picture Frame" in the Porthole 🖼️: Tucking into the warm cabin and peering out through the retro round porthole, the passing scenery looked just like framed oil paintings (Photos 1 & 6). One moment it’s a town fading into the distance, and the next, a colossal wilderness rushing toward you—hopelessly romantic. Nature's Custom "Giant Matcha Cake" 🍵: The second I stepped out onto the deck into the biting sea breeze, I was instantly surrounded by islands of all sizes rising from the sea (Photo 7)! Just look at the perfect, terrace-like lines of the mountains (Photo 8)—dusted with a hint of sweet powdered snow on top, and layered with vibrant golden grass and moss green below. It seriously looks like a giant matcha mille-crepe cake dropped by God right into the North Atlantic! Sailing to the Edge of the World 🧭: Nobody could resist standing out on the deck, letting the crisp clicks of camera shutters get swallowed by the crashing waves (Photo 9). As the ferry slowly approached the village on Kalsoy, seeing those lonely little houses snuggled at the foot of the enormous matcha-green mountains (Photo 10), that sense of magnificent, otherworldly isolation hit right to the core. This legendary, mysterious route might have winds strong enough to wake you right up, but the visual feast of "matcha cakes" along the way truly sweetens the heart. The heavens must have heard our grumbling in Viðareiði, as the afternoon sky suddenly showed mercy and the weather started to clear up! Taking advantage of this rare sunshine, we immediately turned around and headed back to Klaksvik, deciding to hike up Mount Klakkur for a sweeping view of the breathtaking fjord. ❄️ A Winter Miracle of Sinking Steps A trail swallowed by heavy snow 🏔️: As soon as we pulled up to the foot of the mountain, we realized the snow here was way deeper than we imagined (Pic 3)! The original hiking path was completely buried under an overwhelming blanket of pure white. Trudging uphill against the wind, every step sank deep into the thick snow. Despite the exhausting, uneven trek, the view unfolding before us was thrilling beyond words. "God's-eye view" above the fjords 🌊: As we gained elevation, the fjords on both sides and the massive, snow-capped "pyramid peaks" across the water unveiled themselves entirely. The icy, deep-blue seawater was illuminated by a serendipitous ray of sunlight piercing through the clouds in the distance, perfectly spotlighting a ship slowly cruising through the fjord (Pic 1)—it was simply too beautiful to be real. At the edge of the world, a lonely red house 🏠: Battling the wind and literally crawling on our hands and knees at times, we finally made it to the summit! Standing on the barren white plateau of Mount Klakkur, the radio tower and the "lonely red house" became the single, most dazzling pop of color in this minimalist, all-white world (Pic 7). Tiny humans in a pristine wonderland 🧍‍♂️: Standing on the snow ridge at the end of the world and looking down (Pic 10), my companion looked like a tiny black speck against the vast expanse of nature and the towering, ice-locked mountains framing the valley. In that moment, with nothing but the howling wind in our ears, it felt like being lost in a breathtaking, winter-exclusive wonderland. Thank goodness we didn't let the fierce winds stop us earlier. In the Faroe Islands, the more threatening the storms and the thicker the fog, the more likely Mother Nature is to drop a breathtaking gift right when you least expect it! During this quick road trip to the second-largest city, Klaksvík, we stumbled upon the most magical winter moment. 🏔️ The Nordic Solitude of Fog, Snowy Peaks, and Flocks of Sheep The Sacred Pyramid Mountain and Tiffany Blue 🌊: Driving along the winding fjord highway (Pics 2-3), the iconic pyramid-shaped snowy peak loomed in the thick fog (Pic 4). Below us, the azure waters of the North Atlantic exuded an ultimate, untamed elegance. A Muddy Encounter with the Faroese Natives 🐑: Following a narrow trail up the mountain, we came face to face with a flock of fluffy Faroese sheep (Pic 5). With the entire harbor nestled between the mountains and the sea as a backdrop, the Nordic vibes were absolutely off the charts. The Solemn and Rugged Stone Church ⛪: Returning to the town, the Christianskirkjan, built entirely of local basalt, stood proudly beneath the snowy mountain. On this overcast day, it felt exceptionally serene and sacred (Pic 6). 🪄 The Ultimate Surprise: A Full-Ring Rainbow Across the Sea! We were just about to leave in a hurry due to the heavy fog when nature suddenly worked its magic! A faint beam of light pierced through the clouds. Right before our eyes, the two ends of the rainbow stretched and deepened across the middle of the strait, eventually forming a complete full-ring rainbow! It arched over the entire pyramid mountain, perfectly framing the fjords on both sides and the deep blue sea (Pic 1)! It was precisely because we had just weathered the wind and snow that this full-ring rainbow blooming in the mist felt so irreplaceable.
