My little series about my trip to Labuan Bajo has come to an end. And now that all the highlights have been shared, I can honestly say: this destination turned out to be way more fascinating than just a trip to see the Komodo dragons. Labuan Bajo is a collection of completely different experiences rolled into one trip. It featured long boat rides, sunrises among the islands, unique beaches, snorkeling, breathtaking views from lookout points, and, of course, the famous Komodo dragons—the main reason many flock to this part of Indonesia. What I loved most was the sense of a true adventure. Waking up early in the middle of the ocean, spending the entire day exploring islands, swimming in crystal-clear waters, and being surrounded by landscapes that are hard to capture even in the most stunning photos. That said, Labuan Bajo isn't exactly a place where everything is perfectly organized and predictable. A lot depends on the weather, the boat you choose, your itinerary, and the crew. But this slight unpredictability is exactly what makes the journey feel so alive and unforgettable. I’d highly recommend staying for at least a few days and definitely setting aside time for a boat tour. The town itself can be explored pretty quickly, but the true magic of the region begins the moment your boat leaves the harbor and sets sail for the islands of Komodo National Park. But then the fun part began — putting together the itinerary. ✈️ How We Built the Route Flying from Moscow to Komodo requires several layovers. We decided to be smart about it and turned those unavoidable connections into full-fledged mini-trips. · We found the cheapest tickets to a major hub — Kuala Lumpur, flying with Oman Air. It's my first time visiting the Flores Islands🦎, staying at the Katamaran Hotel & Resort Komodo: 1. I booked my airport transfer from Labuan Bajo to the hotel in advance via Trip—which was a great move since prices on the island are higher. It's quite expensive, even though it's only a 7-8 minute drive! 2. There’s no Grab taxi here—neither cars nor bikes like you'd find in Bali, so getting around the island is pricey. For instance, a trip from the hotel to town (just 7-8 minutes) costs 175K - 200K IDR! That's the hotel's taxi rate, but I checked with an outside travel company and they asked for 200K IDR too! If you know any cheaper ways to get around, please drop them in the comments. 3. Island-hopping tours—like to Komodo, Padar, and others—might get canceled❗️This is because of the risk of high waves, and the government often shuts down tours for safety. It's best to prep in advance—pick an agency and a tour, or contact your hotel to book through them (for example, I booked mine at the Katamaran; check the photos for tour info and pricing). You should also book hotel tours early since they can sell out for your dates. That's why I'd highly suggest planning your trip for at least 2-3 nights. If Komodo and Padar are closed off, they'll reroute you to Rinca Island to see the dragons and to nearby spots for snorkeling. However, you'll miss out on the iconic views from Padar's peaks, the Pink Beach, and Manta Point. 4. If you're big on healthy snacks, food, or desserts, bring your own stash. There aren't many shops around here. 5. I recommend splitting your stay between the Katamaran Hotel (the views are absolutely stunning) and a hotel near the pier. Staying by the harbor makes it super easy to hop on island tours (there's also a half-day tour from around 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM to see the flying foxes—they say it's mesmerizing watching hundreds of bats fill the sunset sky). Plus, the pier is right downtown, where you'll find cafes, restaurants, currency exchanges, and other handy amenities. In this post, I'll share how to go on a liveaboard cruise to one of the world's best natural wonders — Komodo National Park in Indonesia. 🦎✨ Visiting Komodo Island has always been a dream of mine. I used to think it was out of reach: too expensive, complicated, and far away. It turns out, it's way easier and much more affordable than I imagined. It's crazy how many people vacation in Bali without realizing it's the gateway to actual Paradise on Earth. 🌍 🗓️ When to plan? First things first — get your tickets to Bali. Keep the seasons in mind: · 🌧️ November–March — wet season, high chance of heavy rain. · ☀️ April–October — dry season. The absolute best month to visit is April. It's the first dry month, so the vegetation is at its most lush and blooming. After that, everything starts turning yellow. ✈️ How to get there? From Bali, book a flight to Labuan Bajo. Round-trip tickets cost about $100–$200 per person. You don't have to fly back to Bali; for the same price, you can fly out to places like Kuala Lumpur. ❗️Important: You must fly domestically. From what I know, you can't get a Visa on Arrival at the Labuan Bajo airport. ❗️Before buying your ticket, decide how much time you want to spend in Komodo, Labuan Bajo, and Flores Island, and figure out your budget. 💯Here are the most practical options: 1️⃣ The optimal option (the one we chose). Three nights in Labuan Bajo + a 2-night cruise on a traditional Indonesian Phinisi boat. You'll have enough time to relax before and after the cruise, explore the town, and have more than enough time for Komodo. Cruises usually depart on Fridays and Mondays (there are more options on Fridays). 💰 Prices: · Hotel for three nights: $200–$400 · Cruise (2 days, 2 nights, 1 morning): ranging from $250 for two in a shared cabin up to $800 for a private panoramic cabin. There are more luxurious options, but these are the prices for a genuinely comfortable experience. 🏨 Where we stayed: · First night: Loccal Collection Hotel — a Santorini-style hotel. · After the cruise: Sudamala Resort, Komodo — major "The White Lotus" vibes. We booked on trip.com. There aren't tons of options in Labuan Bajo, and in my opinion, these are some of the best. Highly recommend! 👍 ⛵ The Cruise: We booked the Lamborajo II boat, Master Ocean cabin for $800. It was incredible! 🥂 Panoramic windows, a balcony, amazing staff and guides, delicious and diverse food (included in the price), and a packed itinerary. My advice: don't skimp on the boat and cabin — it's the experience of a lifetime. 🤩 🐢 The cruise itinerary includes: · 🤿 Snorkeling in coral reefs and with manta rays. · 🥾 Hiking on Padar and Kelor islands. · 🦇 Watching flying foxes. · 🦎 And, of course, visiting Komodo Island — the only place on Earth where you can safely observe the largest lizards in the world. 🎒 What to pack: · Sunscreen (the sun is brutal, be careful!). · Meds and your favorite drinks (water, soda, tea, and coffee are provided on board). · You don't need to bring snorkeling gear or a GoPro — they provide everything on board, and the guide takes underwater footage to share with you. 2️⃣ The quick option. One night in Flores + a one-day tour. Perfect if you're short on time but still want to catch a glimpse of Komodo. 3️⃣ The Flores Island exploration option. Add at least a week to your cruise time. The island is packed with sights: caves, volcanoes, waterfalls, and Wae Rebo village — seeing all of this takes time. For us, these days were probably the best experience of all our travels. When you hike to the top, it feels like you're standing somewhere between the ocean and another planet. The most beautiful time to be here is at sunrise. Boats slowly glide between the islands, the sun lights up the hills, and the ocean turns a vivid turquoise. ✨ What makes Padar special: 🏝 fantastic panoramic views of the bays 🥾 a hike with unbelievable scenery 🌅 one of the best sunrises in Asia 🚤 part of the legendary Komodo island-hopping route 📸 a place where you'll want to stop and snap a photo every few steps 💡 Good to know: · the hike up takes about 20–40 minutes · it's best to go early in the morning — to beat the heat and the crowds · the trail gets steep in places, so comfortable shoes are a must · there is almost no shade or shops on the island — bring plenty of water · during the dry season, the hills turn golden, while in the rainy season, they're vibrant green A pretty unique fact: there are no Komodo dragons on Padar, even though the island is part of the national park. Because of this, you can safely wander around and soak in the views without needing a ranger. And the most unforgettable moment is reaching the summit and realizing that all those internet photos don't even come close to capturing the true scale and beauty of this place.

Finally got to prove whether the pink color at Labuan Bajo's Pink Beach is actually real or just a photo-editing myth. And sure enough, the pink is real. Even before our dinghy reached Pink Beach—or Long Beach Two—that gorgeous pink hue was already sparkling from a distance. The moment we set foot on the sand, we were completely blown away.
