Laon travel guide and discussion

Located in the Aisne department of the Hauts-de-France region, Laon is a historic hilltop city with a population of around 25,000. Built on a limestone plateau overlooking the vast Picardy plain, it is celebrated as the "Crowned City" thanks to its unique geographical location and rich historical heritage. Laon's most famous landmark is the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Laon. Constructed in the 12th century, it is an outstanding masterpiece of early French Gothic architecture, completed even before Notre-Dame de Paris. The cathedral's soaring towers, exquisite carvings, and the iconic ox statues adorning its exterior perfectly capture the allure of medieval architectural art. During the Middle Ages, Laon served as a vital religious and political hub in France; Hugh Capet, the founder of the Capetian dynasty, was crowned here. Today, Laon beautifully preserves its medieval cityscape. Its ancient city walls, cobblestone streets, historic buildings, and tranquil squares come together to create a truly unique urban landscape.

Laon, a small but charming town in northern France, attracted me with its historical and cultural beauty. On a beautiful weekend morning, I decided to spend some time exploring Laon and attending Sunday Mass at Laon Cathedral, a beautiful Gothic structure. Upon entering Laon, I was immediately impressed by the peaceful and ancient beauty of this town. The cobblestone streets, old houses with red tiled roofs, and quiet space created a relaxing and pleasant atmosphere. I started my day by walking around the center, looking at the small shops and enjoying a cup of coffee at a roadside cafe. The gentle sunlight shone down, making everything brighter and fresher. After walking around, I decided to go up the hill to Laon Cathedral. The church is located on a high position, from here I could see the whole town and the surrounding countryside. As I entered the church grounds, I was immediately captivated by its architectural beauty. Laon Cathedral is one of the oldest and most beautiful Gothic structures in France, with its soaring towers and brilliant stained glass windows. At exactly 10am, Sunday Mass began. I walked inside the church, where the space was large and solemn with dim light from the stained glass windows. The organ played, creating a sacred and moving atmosphere. The priest began the ceremony with a welcome and hymns filled the air. As a Catholic, I always felt a sense of peace and serenity from this ceremony. to Dinant, Belgium, it takes 3 hours to Laon, Paris. Laon is a "city in the sky" in the Hauts-de-France region of northern France, bearing a thousand years of history and artistic essence. The old city is built on a hill 100 meters above sea level, and a 7 km-long medieval city wall surrounds the city. The existing 85 bell towers form a unique skyline. As a military town on the border between France and Belgium, its defense system can be traced back to the Gallo-Roman period. The city wall built in the 12th century is 3 meters thick, and the barbican and arrow tower are ingeniously designed. During the Napoleonic Wars in 1814, the French army fought the Battle of Laon here with the Sixth Anti-French Alliance. Although the French army retreated after 6,000 casualties, the Allied forces also paid a price of 4,000 people. This battle became one of the turning points in Napoleon's military career. Laon Cathedral is a milestone in early Gothic architecture, built a century earlier than Notre Dame de Paris. Its flying buttresses and rose window designs break with tradition. The choir stalls are carved with images of Old Testament prophets, and the organ is still used for religious ceremonies. The construction of the church took 85 years, and the quarry only allowed the craftsmen to mine two boulders per week. The existing quarry site has been transformed into a geological museum, displaying medieval quarrying tools and construction techniques.

The charm of Paris, France 🇫🇷 Introducing some of the most famous spots you definitely can't miss 😚🤘 📍Eiffel Tower Whether you see it during the day or at night, it always has an overwhelming presence ❤️‍🔥 My personal recommendation is sunset. I bought a Nutella crepe nearby and watched the sunset slowly on the grass, which was very nice ✨ At night, you can see the champagne flashes from 0 to 5 minutes every hour! 📍Notre Dame Cathedral It was a fire in 2019, so you can't go inside now 😢But it's very beautiful from the outside, and various photos and paintings are sold near the Seine! I also took a break at a cafe called A.LACROIX ☕️It was very delicious, and if you sit at an outdoor seat, you can see Notre Dame right in front of you, so I recommend it! 📍Arc de Triomphe This Arc de Triomphe can be said to be the main axis of Paris! Did you know that roads are built in Paris from here? If you have time, go up and enjoy the magnificent city of Paris! 📍Montmartre Hill and the Wall of Je t'aime This is a very stylish and romantic city, and just walking around made me say "cute" over and over again lol Don't forget to pin this spot, which has a slightly retro atmosphere! 📍Louvre Museum We completely forgot to reserve tickets, so we couldn't go in😭 But the outside was also very beautiful, and there were people playing instruments, which really matched the atmosphere and we enjoyed it💫 Everyone, be sure to buy your tickets in advance! (The same goes for the Palace of Versailles) Cooking Edition👩‍🍳 Do you know the dish called French tacos? This dish is made of potatoes and cheese sandwiched between a burrito-like bread! It's so addictive that you won't forget it once you try it, so we ate it twice🤤🩵 #France #Paris #Overseas Travel #Europe Travel
