The salt mountains are perfect for photos! The little train tracks, crystallization pond patterns, salt culture museum… every corner is worth lingering. I also bought a few packs of specialty salt as souvenirs, perfect for keeping or gifting. Along the way, I traveled from the bustling culture of Sanya to the tranquil nature of Ledong. Every stop felt like opening a blind box, full of surprises. The Sanle Railway is really convenient, basically “arrive at the station, arrive at the scenic spot,” perfect for those prone to motion sickness! Maogong Mountain, formerly known as Baoguo Mountain, is located in Ledong County in the north of Sanya. Baoguo Mountain is about 4,000 meters long with undulating peaks. In the middle rises a 630-meter-high granite mountain, which resembles a reclining bust of the late leader Mao Zedong. It is a rare natural landscape with both form and spirit. A huge piece of salt marshes, arranged in turn in the distance, stretches for several kilometers, like a vast expanse of farmland. This wonderful scene can not help but think of the dream scenes often depicted in fairy tales. The ground is full of salt mixed with white flowers, and workers are struggling to load them into the car. Maybe in the near future, they will enter thousands of households and become the spices on your table. If it is not immersive, it is hard to imagine that the white salt crystals are condensed together, as if the snow is crystal clear and difficult to understand, the process of making salt is so interesting. Yinggehai—just the name sounds romantic to the core 🌊 I went in July, and the sea breeze and sunshine completely healed me. After returning, I even brought that good mood to work. No more chit-chat, here’s the real deal 👇 · · Transportation · — ✈️ By plane: Fly to Sanya Phoenix International Airport. Rent a car and take the G98 ring expressway west route. It’s just over 70 km and about 55 minutes to town. In 2026, this highway is in great condition, with four lanes each way and a speed limit of 120. 🚄 By high-speed rail: Take the island ring high-speed rail to Huangliu Station. From there, a taxi ride of about 15 minutes gets you to town, costing 30–40 yuan. Note that Huangliu Station is a minor stop with limited service, so check schedules in advance! 🚗 Driving tips: The Ledong section of the island ring tourist road is more scenic. Driving slowly along the coast, you’ll see mangroves and fishing harbors, but it takes about 40 minutes longer than the highway. If you’re in a hurry, take the highway; if you want to enjoy the ride, take the tourist road. Your choice. 📌 There are no regular taxis or ride-hailing services in town. Getting around depends on driving yourself or arranging pick-up and drop-off with your homestay host in advance. Remember this! · · Accommodation · — ⛰️ The place I stayed is on the seaside side of Navy Street in Yinggehai town, just a 3–5 minute electric bike ride from the waterfront plaza. It’s surrounded by local residential areas, full of everyday life vibes. ⛰️ The room has a small west-facing balcony 🌅 directly overlooking the bay. You can watch the entire sunset from the balcony without stepping outside. The golden light slowly spreads across the sea. I was stunned for over ten seconds the first time I saw it. ⛰️ There’s a public terrace downstairs with lounge chairs and umbrellas. At night, I bought beer and marinated snacks to sit there, enjoying the breeze. The stars above looked like scattered diamonds ✨ · · Itinerary suggestions · — I stayed here for three days and two nights, taking it very slow. Here’s my tested itinerary 👇 “Day 1 · Arrival + salt field sunset” Arrive in the afternoon and check in. After a short rest, head straight to the Yinggehai salt fields. July is the peak beauty season for the salt fields—high temperatures speed up evaporation, and salt ponds of different concentrations show dreamy colors like pink, amber, and mint green. With the salt mountain reflections, every photo looks like a masterpiece. The salt fields are free to enter, no tickets required. I recommend going around 4 PM and leaving around 6 PM to catch the softest light. ⚠️ The salt field ground has salt crystals, so wear enclosed sneakers. Flip-flops or sandals aren’t suitable. There’s no shade at all, so a sun hat and sunscreen are essential. “Day 2 · lighthouse + fishing harbor + island road cycling” Sleep in naturally in the morning. Head out at 9 AM to stroll around the town’s fishing harbor pier. The early morning harbor is full of life—fishing boats dock to unload, fishermen sort their nets, and the air smells salty. You can buy freshly caught seafood right at the pier, and prices are much cheaper than in Sanya. Return to the homestay for a midday rest to avoid the strongest sun. At 4 PM, set off for Yinggehai Bay lighthouse 🗼. Just navigate to “Haifang Street” to find it. This white lighthouse stands by the sea, surrounded by clean beaches and reefs. There are no fences or commercial facilities, very natural. In July, sunset is around 7:15 PM. Arrive an hour early, walk and take photos on the beach, then find a rock to sit quietly and watch the entire sunset. That evening, the sunset colors shifted from gold to orange to rose red to purple, with at least five or six gradient layers. I’ve lived many years but never seen such a complete color transition. It was truly moving. At night, I ate qingbuliang (a local cold dessert) and fried snacks at a street stall. It cost less than 20 yuan per person and was so filling I could barely move. “Day 3 · Jianfengling half-day trip + return” If you have the energy, drive to Jianfengling National Forest Park early on day three. It’s about 40 minutes from town. The mountain’s Tianchi lake is at 800 meters elevation, surrounded by 18 peaks. In July, everything is lush green, and the air is so fresh you want to take it home. Stay on the mountain until noon, then head down and return in the afternoon. · · Some heartfelt reminders · — 🔸 Sunscreen must be SPF 50+. The west coast of Hainan has even stronger UV than the east coast. It might not feel hot, but the sun is intense. 🔸 Bring mosquito repellent! There are many mosquitoes by the sea at dusk, especially near the salt fields. 🔸 Supplies in town are limited. Buy drinking water and snacks in Huangliu town beforehand. 🔸 July is early typhoon season in Hainan. Watch the weather forecast closely before you go. Don’t push it if there’s a typhoon warning. 🔸 The salt fields and lighthouse are not official scenic spots and have no restrooms. Take care of personal needs before you go. 🔸 Respect local fishermen’s lives. It’s best to greet them before taking photos. Don’t point your camera right at their faces. 🔸 Be careful on the coastal rocks. Don’t go too far during high tide. The rocks get slippery when the waves are strong. · · A few final words · — Yinggehai isn’t for rushing through tourist spots. There are no trendy restaurants with long lines, no commercial streets with vendors, no carefully designed photo spots. What you get is— A quiet salt field where you can hear your own heartbeat 🧂 A white lighthouse that has watched the sea for decades 🗼 Fishermen who work from sunrise And a sunset that happens on time every day but never repeats 🌅 If you’re tired of crowded popular spots and want a place to truly unwind for a few days— Yinggehai in July is worth a special trip.

Ladies, listen up❗️Hainan in summer isn’t just about Sanya and one road. Last month, I was so hot I went crazy and decided on a whim to head west. I ended up diving straight into Jianfengling in Ledong, kicking off my “lung cleansing adventure” 🫁 First, let’s talk transportation—this is really important👇 ✈️Fly into Sanya Phoenix Airport, then take the Sanle tourist railway, which will open by the end of 2024. Get off at Jianfeng station. The whole trip takes just over 40 minutes. From Jianfeng station, a taxi to the park entrance takes about 15 minutes and costs around 20 yuan. 🚗If driving, take the G98 ring expressway. It’s 90 km from Sanya. Exit at the Jianfeng west line toll, then drive 8 km to the park entrance. The whole trip takes about 1.5 hours. ⚠️Inside the park, the road is mountainous and winding. You must drive yourself or hire a car! The road from the entrance to Tianchi is full of curves and steep slopes, taking about 40 minutes. If you get car sick, take medicine in advance. About tickets: Jianfengling National Forest Park is open daily from 7 AM to 6 PM. The Tianchi area is open from 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM. Starting February 5, 2026, the main peak will reopen early morning hiking for sunrise viewing. But there are no on-site tickets for the early morning session—you must buy night tickets online in advance. Entry is limited! If you want to see the sunrise, don’t wait to buy tickets at the park—you’ll be turned away. 🌿Here’s my itinerary🌿 Day 1 Arrival + Tianchi lake loop Arrived in the afternoon, checked in, then went straight to Tianchi. This mountain lake sits at 800 meters elevation, covers 600 mu, and is surrounded by 18 peaks over 1,000 meters. The lake surface is like a mirror, reflecting the entire mountain. The lake loop trail takes about 2–3 hours. It’s easy, fully shaded, and even at noon in July, it’s not hot. The air has 50,000 to 80,000 negative oxygen ions per cubic centimeter. This isn’t hype—it’s park data. After a few steps, you feel your chest getting refreshed. In the evening, a thin mist rises over the lake. The mountain peaks peek through the fog. I stood on the boardwalk for five minutes without moving, just watching. Day 2 Rainforest boardwalk + main peak Set off at 5:30 AM on the main peak trail. Jianfengling’s main peak is 1,412 meters high. The trail is about 3.5 km one way, with a 600-meter climb. With normal fitness, you can reach the top in 2 hours. The rainforest boardwalk is the most immersive I’ve ever experienced—tall trees dozens of meters high overhead, sunlight filtering through leaves onto moss, roots and strangler figs twisting underfoot. Along the way, signs explain six wonders of the tropical rainforest: buttress roots, aerial gardens, strangler figs, single-tree forests, old stems flowering, and vine entanglement. Climbing and learning is way more fun than class. At the summit, looking north you see endless primeval forest. To the south, you can see the Beibu Gulf. The mountain and sea together create a breathtaking view that photos can’t capture. ⛰️Accommodation experience separately⛰️ 🏡The guesthouse is inside Jianfengling park, by Tianchi. After entering the gate, drive along the mountain road to the very end. It’s far from the noisy entrance, surrounded by trees and lake water. So quiet at night you only hear insects and water. 🏡The cabin is a standalone wooden structure, built entirely of wood. Open the door and you see the lake. The balcony faces southeast over Tianchi. In the morning, you don’t have to get up—just open your eyes and watch the sunrise’s golden light spread across the lake. 🏡There’s a wraparound porch with two rattan chairs and a small tea table. At night, sit outside to enjoy the breeze and tea while looking up at a sky full of stars. You can’t see this kind of star density in the city ✨ Some practical tips: 🔸The cabin is pure wood, so there’s a faint wood smell—not moldy, don’t worry. But if you’re sensitive to humidity, bring a dehumidifier bag. 🔸The mountain temperature is 5–8 degrees cooler than the base. In July, daytime is about 22–26°C, dropping to around 18°C at night. Be sure to bring a light jacket! 🔸There are many mosquitoes. Mosquito repellent is a must. I recommend one with DEET. 🔸There’s no large supermarket inside the park. Buy water and snacks in Jianfeng town before heading up. 🔸Cell signal is okay around Tianchi, but deep in the rainforest there’s basically no signal. Download offline maps in advance. Day 3 Rainforest valley + return On the last day, I went to the rainforest valley, a mountain valley at about 700 meters elevation with a stream you can wade in. The water is so cold it makes you shiver but feels amazing. The July heat instantly disappears. There’s also a large cycad grove—ancient fern-like plants from the dinosaur era—covering the hillside. Great for photos. Checked out at noon and left the mountain. Took the high-speed train back to Sanya in the afternoon, just in time to catch the sunset at Longmu Bay (I’ll cover that in my next post). To sum up: Jianfengling isn’t a spot for ticking off a checklist. It’s a place to slow down completely. I’ve been to Ledong twice and want to go again. Last time I talked about the rainforest secret of Jianfengling. This time, let’s explore another side of Ledong—Yantian, sunsets, and the coastline. A completely different vibe but just as captivating. 🚗 Travel tips first 🚗 There are two options from Sanya: Option 1: Take the Sanle tourist railway to Huangliu station, about 50 minutes. Then take a taxi about 15 km to Yinggehai salt field, around 20 minutes. Option 2: Drive west on the G98 ring expressway. The full trip from Sanya to Yinggehai is about 70 km, just over an hour. Along the way, you’ll pass a spectacular coconut tree-lined road that’s perfect for photos. Driving between Yinggehai salt field and Longmuwan takes about 25 minutes. It’s best to visit them together for maximum efficiency. 🧂 First stop: Yinggehai salt field 🧂 I can’t recommend this place enough!!! Yinggehai salt field is the largest sea salt field in Hainan and the biggest sea salt production base in southern China. Established in 1958, it covers 3,793 hectares at the foot of Jianfengling. First, about tickets: the scenic area is free to visit! The sea salt culture museum is also free. Parking costs 5 yuan per car. If you want to take the small train deep into the salt field or a boat to the lake center, those require separate tickets—50 yuan one way for the train, 90 yuan for the boat, and 10 yuan for shoe covers. Choose based on your needs. ⏰ The best time to shoot photos is after 4 PM! Key point! In July, the sun in Hainan at 2 or 3 PM is brutal, but after 4 PM the light softens. The salt ponds form natural mirrors, reflecting the blue sky and white clouds. Walking on the ponds feels like stepping on clouds—this is the legendary “sky mirror,” Hainan style. Here are some must-shoot spots: 📍 Glass walkway: built above the salt ponds, with mirror-like water below. Wearing red or white clothes creates the strongest contrast. 📍 Salt sculpture plaza: a large outdoor salt sculpture group that lasts longer than sand sculptures. They stand firm against wind and sun, adding a sculptural feel to portraits. 📍 Old auditorium train station: vintage tracks with white salt hills, full post-apocalyptic vibe. 📍 Salt transport railway line: a 27 km track winding through the salt fields. Standing on the tracks gives amazing depth for photos. Next to the salt field is a huge slogan painted in 1962 by Guo Moruo: “Burn dry seawater to turn into silver mountains.” White characters on a black background stretch across the wilderness, giving a unique industrial romance from afar. ⚠️ Notes: Production areas are off-limits! Stay on viewing platforms and walkways only. The salt pond surface looks hard but is actually soft—don’t step in. Bring sunglasses! The salt field reflects strongly, and without sunglasses, it’s hard to keep your eyes open. 🌅 Second stop: Longmuwan sunset 🌅 It’s a 25-minute drive from Yinggehai to Longmuwan, just in time for sunset. Longmuwan is known as the “most beautiful sunset beach at 18 degrees north latitude.” The 7 km silver-white beach stretches along the coast. At sunset, the whole sky burns red, gold, and orange, and the sea is dyed too. The drifting clouds glow with a golden halo—after seeing it in person, you’ll realize all edited sunset filters are nothing. There are some people on the beach but it’s not crowded, nothing like Sanya Bay. You can walk barefoot on the fine sand—it’s soft and won’t hurt your feet. For some excitement, Longmuwan offers parasailing, giving an aerial view of the entire coastline. There’s also a fluorine-ion hot spring nearby. After soaking, your skin feels incredibly smooth. Just ask locals for the exact spot. 🏡 Accommodation experience 🏡 ⛰️ The guesthouse is near the salt field in Yinggehai town. Coming from Foluo town, turn in and it’s just a few hundred meters. It’s about a 10-minute walk to the salt field viewing platform. Away from main roads, surrounded by cactus and coconut groves, so quiet you can hear the sea breeze. ⛰️ The independent courtyard room has a yard with an endless view of the salt fields. The room has two large floor-to-ceiling windows with incredible natural light. The balcony faces west, so you can watch the sun slowly sink to the end of the salt field in the evening. The whole sky changes from orange to purple and pink in real time ☀️ ⛰️ The yard has a stone table and two bamboo chairs. At night, brew some tea 🍵 and listen to frogs and insects in the distance. Occasionally, the salty sea breeze drifts in, making you feel completely relaxed ✨ 📋 Suggested 2-day itinerary 📋 Day 1 Morning: Depart from Sanya → Yinggehai (high-speed rail or drive) Noon: Have lunch in Yinggehai town. The local Hainan rice noodles and qingbuliang dessert at small eateries are authentic. Afternoon: Yinggehai salt field (best after 4 PM), visit the sea salt culture museum for about 40 minutes Evening: Watch the sunset glow on the salt hills, a golden silver mountain scene Night: Return to the guesthouse to rest and relax in the yard Day 2 Early morning: If you can get up early, shoot the morning light at the salt field. The light from 6:30 to 8:00 AM is also amazing. Morning: Check out and head to Longmuwan, taking the coastal road along the way Noon: Find a seafood stall near Longmuwan. The local boiled shrimp and steamed grouper are so fresh they’ll blow your mind. Afternoon: Relax on Longmuwan beach and wait for the sunset Evening: After the last sunset, return or stay another night Some common pitfalls ⬇️ 🔸 July is typhoon season. Always check the weather forecast before you go. Typhoon days ruin the salt field and beach. 🔸 The salt field has very strong UV rays. Use sunscreen with SPF 50+ and wear a hat, sunglasses, and sun-protective clothing. 🔸 There’s little shade in the salt field. Bring enough water, at least two bottles. 🔸 The beach near Longmuwan has limited rinse facilities. It’s best to bring a bottle of water to wash sand off your feet. 🔸 If driving, fill up your tank before entering Yinggehai. The town’s gas station is a bit of a drive away. Ledong is truly an underrated gem on Hainan’s west coast. Visiting in July means fewer people, beautiful scenery, and friendly prices. It’s ten times quieter than Sanya but just as exciting. This area is mostly mountainous rainforest scenery with an abundance of negative oxygen ions. It’s truly a place with fewer people and beautiful views, with countless peaks perfect for exploration. Recently, I visited a few places and put together a simple guide (some places are not exactly in the central line but still have tropical rainforest climates). Highly Recommended: 1. Jiānfēnglǐng, Ledong 2. Bàwánglǐng, Changjiang 3. Qīxiānlǐng, Baoting 4. Bǎihuālǐng, Qiongzhong Recommended: 1. Wǔzhǐshān (non-summit version, summit strongly recommended) 2. Wǔzhǐshān Rafting 💥 Tropical Rainforest Roads If you’re not interested in specific attractions but want to bike or drive and experience the rainforest scenery along the way, I recommend some provincial and national roads around Baisha, Qiongzhong, and Baoting. I won’t give specific recommendations here because the scenery is all along the route, so it’s best to explore as you go. Qīxiānlǐng Scenic Area There’s a free climbing project at the peak, which offers a great experience and panoramic mountain views. It’s easy for hiking enthusiasts but a bit tiring for those who don’t exercise regularly. After hiking, I personally suggest staying in Wuzhishan city rather than Baoting, as it’s bigger and cooler (you can check my notes for the Qīxiānlǐng guide). Jiānfēnglǐng Highly recommend a night climb! Bring a windbreaker! The wind on the mountain is very strong, and this is the coldest place I’ve been to in Hainan besides Wuzhishan! Watching the sunrise here is amazing! If you miss the sunrise, the view from the top is still worth it. I suggest starting the climb at 4 a.m. Bàwánglǐng, Changjiang Located near the western line, it’s not easy to plan a route, but I think it’s definitely worth a visit. The photo opportunities along the way are fantastic. Bǎihuālǐng, Qiongzhong Great for families with kids and hiking enthusiasts. You can choose your preferred route, take a sightseeing bus, or hike the entire way. There are waterfalls and viewing platforms, and the facilities are relatively well-developed, making it a typical scenic area. Wǔzhǐshān Rafting The drop isn’t big, but it’s perfect for water activities in the summer, especially in a hot place like Hainan. Special Attention❗️ The rainforest climate has many mosquitoes and insects, so it’s recommended to wear long pants and bring insect repellent. Some areas have leeches or snakes 🐍, so avoid going to undeveloped places alone. The central region has abundant rainfall, so be sure to bring rain gear. The grandmother didn’t speak Mandarin but kept smiling at me and showed me the scarf she had woven. That kind of simple kindness really touched me. The village also has traditional pottery-making crafts, using the most primitive methods, hand-molding, then firing with firewood. The pottery is rough and clumsy but has a warmth that machines can’t replicate. I bought a small pottery jar, which still sits on my desk. Every time I see it, I remember that quiet afternoon.
