As the iconic green propeller plane of Widerøe Airlines breaks through the clouds and dives towards the short runway surrounded by snow-capped mountains and fjords, the climax of this visit is reached the moment the plane touches down. In early January, Leknes is at the intersection of polar night and twilight. Stepping off the plane, you're greeted by an icy yet incredibly pure Arctic wind. The small scale of LKN Airport is astonishing, making you wonder if you've mistakenly landed on a private farm's airstrip. The runway is flanked by snowy slopes and low residential houses, offering an intimate connection with nature that large international airports can never replicate. Inside the terminal, it feels less like an airport and more like a cozy rural bus station. There's only one baggage carousel, a few rows of simple wooden benches, and a small car rental counter. The Arctic Circle's January skies are always tinged with mysterious deep blue or pinkish-purple hues, visible through the large floor-to-ceiling windows. Outside, propeller planes are being prepared against the backdrop of the jagged mountains of the Lofoten Islands. Here, there's no sense of the anxiety typical of busy airports; instead, there's a slower pace. Most staff wear thick wool sweaters, exuding the straightforwardness and warmth unique to northern Norway. The rumbling sound of the baggage carousel is particularly noticeable in the quiet waiting area. For travelers visiting in January, LKN Airport is not just a transit hub but a ceremonial gateway to the "Land of the North." The most intriguing experience is "adventure begins as you exit." Just a few minutes' walk from the airport's main entrance, you can feel the wilderness of the Lofoten Islands. There are no shuttle trains or complex underground passages here; instead, you'll find off-road vehicles with snowboards strapped to their roofs parked right at the entrance. If you're planning to explore the southern and central parts of Lofoten in January, LKN is undoubtedly the best starting point. Though small, it embodies the raw and icy beauty of this archipelago. At the end of its short runway, you'll be greeted by world-class fjord landscapes and the ever-present possibility of witnessing the aurora borealis.

Who understands😭 The Lofoten Islands in Norway are so stunningly beautiful that words fail! Within this archipelago, there is a small fishing village called Henningsvær, which was my first stop in Lofoten☝🏼 Here, you’ll find not only fairy-tale-like colorful wooden houses but also the world’s northernmost football field—Henningsvær Stadion⚽ This time, I drove around Lofoten and dedicated a whole day to this little village. It’s incredibly beautiful! I have to share it with everyone!👇 🚗 【How to Get There? Transportation Guide】 ✅ Self-driving (highly recommended): This is the most convenient way! Starting from Svolvær, the largest town in the Lofoten Islands, it takes about 25-30 minutes by car to reach Henningsvær. The fjord scenery along the way is so beautiful that you’ll want to stop and take photos anytime. ✅ Public transport (for non-drivers): If you don’t drive, you need to take a bus from Leknes to Rørvik, then transfer to another bus to Henningsvær. The whole trip may take about 3 hours (only 1 hour by car). Bus frequency is limited, so it’s best to check the schedule in advance. 📸 【Must-visit Spots & Perfect Photo Angles】 1️⃣ The World’s Most Beautiful Football Field ⚽ This is definitely the most photogenic spot in the village! An ordinary five-a-side football field built on a small rocky island surrounded by the sea, with majestic snow-capped mountains and deep fjords as the backdrop, it’s known as the “world’s most beautiful football field.” 📷 Best photo spot: Navigate to Fiskehjell i Henningsvær parking lot, then hike up the hill following the signposts⛰️. From the top, you’ll get postcard-worthy views overlooking the stadium, lighthouse, and the entire bay. 2️⃣ Postcard Angle Harbor View📮 Henningsvær Port Viewpoint is an excellent spot to capture colorful houses and fishing boats reflected in the water. The red fishermen’s cabins (Rorbuer) mirror on the sea surface, seagulls circle overhead, and every shot looks like a movie poster. 3️⃣ Festvågtind Hike 🏔️ If you have the stamina, you must hike Festvågtind! Although it’s a bit steep at the start, the panoramic view of Henningsvær and the surrounding islands from the summit makes every step worthwhile. ‼️【Winter Practical Tips】 🚗 Winter Transportation Guide 1️⃣ Self-driving: The difficulty level increases! Winter in Lofoten often brings snow, and icy roads are common. Be sure to rent a 4WD vehicle with snow tires and drive slowly! In heavy snow, visibility can be very low, so it’s recommended to follow snowplows. 2️⃣ Never speed while driving! Speeding fines are really expensive❗️ 3️⃣ If you don’t drive, consider booking a private car or joining a local day tour for convenience. 4️⃣ Flights: If flying into Evenes Airport (EVE), be aware that winter flights may be delayed due to weather, so allow plenty of transfer time.

A six-day, five-night trip to Lofoten Island, starting from Leknes Airport and heading east. We were lucky enough to see the Northern Lights and the beautiful fishing houses reminiscent of those in postcards. It was a wonderful and unforgettable experience. We chose to visit Lofoten in winter, and hope to have the opportunity to return in summer to see a different side of the island.

It is also only a five-minute drive from the airport, which is very convenient. ♨️ Facilities: The rooms are fully equipped with ovens and dishwashers. There is a parking lot nearby 🛁 Room Environment: Although small, it is very clean. However, the sound insulation is poor, and the footsteps upstairs can be clearly heard, making it difficult for people to fall asleep The hotel requires self-check-in, the entrance is hidden, and there is no clear house number. There is only a small sign in the corner of a clothing store window, which does not have much guiding effect 💗 Check-in experience: The location is convenient, but the instructions are not clear. The sound insulation is very poor, making it impossible to fall asleep. Overall ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

While there are plenty of accommodations available, I highly recommend staying in a traditional fisherman's cabin, known as a rorbu. These cozy and rustic cabins offer a glimpse into the island's history and provide a comfortable base to relax after a day of exploration. To make the most of your trip, pack warm and waterproof clothing, as the weather can be unpredictable. Additionally, be mindful of the fragile ecosystem and respect the local customs and traditions.
