We took the Southern train from London Victoria, and the journey took around 1 hour 🚆 Watching the city slowly fade into open countryside felt like the beginning of the escape even before arriving. Once in Lewes, the town centre immediately felt peaceful. Independent shops, historic buildings, and quiet streets created a relaxed atmosphere that encouraged slow wandering rather than rushing from place to place. We also strolled along High Street in search of a 15th-century bookstore 📚 Although it was unfortunately closed when we arrived, we still enjoyed admiring the building from the outside, its old façade carried so much character and history that even a brief stop felt meaningful. One of the highlights was the walk up to Lewes Castle 🏰 From the top, the view opened up beautifully, rooftops below, rolling greenery stretching into the distance, and the soft landscape of East Sussex surrounding the town. It was the kind of view that made us stay longer than planned. Do note that the Lewes Castle has an entrance fee and operating hours. I would highly advise getting the tickets in advance. What makes Lewes special is how naturally history blends into everyday life.
