A Fascinating Look Back at Birmingham's Social History
Living near Lichfield and being National Trust members, we felt this venue deserved a visit. We booked an early morning slot at 10:40 since later times were very popular. Arriving slightly early, we explored the bookshop and an upstairs exhibition featuring fashion displays by Birmingham University. Our guided tour started at 10:40, finishing just after noon.
Our guide, John, was a wealth of knowledge with a dry sense of humor, reminiscent of Jasper Carrott. All the volunteers were extremely helpful and informative. The National Trust has done an excellent job recreating houses from various decades up to 1966, when the last residents left. It’s remarkable considering these homes, with their minimal amenities, were far from luxurious. A thoroughly educational insight into Birmingham's social and economic history.

Lichfield & Tamworth Day Trip: Cathedrals, Parks & Castles
Started the day from Lichfield City station and headed straight to the library. Then visited the magnificent Lichfield Cathedral, famous for its unique three spires. Afterwards, took a relaxing stroll through Beacon Park and by the pool.
Later in the afternoon, caught a train over to Tamworth to explore the historic Tamworth Castle. A thoroughly packed and rewarding day trip! 🚂🏰🌳
Tips: Lichfield Cathedral is free to enter, though donations are welcome. If you plan to visit both towns by rail, check the West Midlands Railway timetable in advance as regular direct connections make this multi-stop itinerary very seamless.

Visiting a cathedral
Visiting Lichfield Cathedral was an unforgettable experience. As I approached, the three iconic spires—known as the "Ladies of the Vale"—immediately drew my attention, standing elegantly against the sky. Their beauty and presence were captivating.
Inside, the cathedral's grandeur was overwhelming. The high, vaulted ceilings seemed to stretch endlessly upward, and the sunlight streaming through the stained glass windows cast vibrant colors across the stone walls. I spent time in the Lady Chapel, admiring the intricate Herkenrode Glass, amazed by its centuries-old history and artistry.
As I wandered through the cathedral, I felt a profound sense of calm. Every detail, from the ancient carvings to the hidden memorials, seemed to whisper stories of the past. Sitting in the choir stalls for a moment, I let the serene atmosphere envelop me.
After exploring inside, I strolled through the cathedral grounds. The peaceful surroundings and stunning views of Lichfield offered the perfect opportunity to reflect and savor the moment. My visit to Lichfield Cathedral wasn’t just a sightseeing trip—it was an inspiring and deeply moving journey.

Trip to litchfield
My trip to Lichfield Cathedral was nothing short of magical. As I approached the grand building, the three towering spires immediately caught my eye, standing tall against the sky. They’re often called the "Ladies of the Vale," and I could see why—there’s something graceful yet commanding about them.
Stepping inside, I was struck by the sheer beauty of the place. The vaulted ceilings seemed to soar endlessly above me, and the light streaming through the stained glass windows painted the interior in soft, colorful hues. I spent some time admiring the Herkenrode Glass in the Lady Chapel—it’s incredible to think that these intricate panes have survived for centuries.
Wandering through the cathedral, I felt a deep sense of peace. Every corner seemed to tell a story, from the ancient stone carvings to the memorials tucked away in quiet alcoves. I even paused for a moment of reflection in the choir stalls, letting the history of the place sink in.
Outside, I took a walk around the cathedral grounds, enjoying the views of Lichfield and the surrounding countryside. The air was crisp, and the peaceful atmosphere made it a perfect spot to just breathe and take it all in. Visiting Lichfield Cathedral wasn’t just a trip—it was an experience that stayed with me long after I left.
