The Rainbow Ridge (Linze side of Zhangye Danxia) peaks at Platform 4 — Hongxia Terrace. Ticket + shuttle 108 RMB (73 student, 38 over-70), WeChat/Alipay/real-name only, 48-hour validity. In October the sun drops at 18:50; I entered at 17:10, rode the shuttle 1→2→5→4, and stood on Platform 4’s upper west plank by 18:05 — 45 minutes before the magic window. The ridge goes from dusty rose to wine-red between 18:30 and 18:52, then a 4-minute afterglow on the “knife mountain fire sea” folds. Shuttle’s last run is 19:20 in autumn; miss it and you walk 3 km to the north gate in the dark — headlamp mandatory, I learned that the hard year before. No drones (confiscation at gate), no stepping off the plank (20,000-year crust, 200 RMB fine), no glass bottles. Mistake: entering at 15:00 and burning out on Platform 1’s wide panorama, then arriving at Platform 4 at 18:40 already tired — the 40-minute sit is the whole point. Another: wearing white shoes — the plank dust is orange forever. Carry a wind layer; the Gobi drops 12°C after sundown. If Platform 4 is packed shoulder-to-shoulder in peak October, would you drop to Platform 5’s side-light texture and trade the iconic red for elbow room?

📍Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park is truly a place that makes your heart race instantly. 🥰 The rock layers look as if they were painted by God, with red, yellow, orange, and green interwoven to form a flowing oil painting. ✨Foreword Only when you stand on the Danxia viewing platform in person do you understand what an "oil painting of the earth" really means. Layers of colorful mountains stretch out, and as light and shadow fall on the gullies and textures, the colors shift and flow. Forget the filtered photos online; this authentic, heartfelt guide covers all the essential tips + pitfall warnings you need to know. Save it. 📌Basic park information 🎫Ticket: Admission ticket + sightseeing bus package. You must buy the sightseeing bus ticket. The viewing platforms are very far apart and cannot be reached on foot. There is no option to drive your own car into the park. ⏰Opening hours: The scenery is best at sunrise and sunset. · Summer: 5:30 AM–7:30 PM · Fall/Winter: 7:30 AM–6:00 PM 👉Tip: The sunset session is the most crowded. For a quieter, more atmospheric experience, choose the early morning sunrise session when the light is soft and there are fewer tourists. 🗻What to see at the 4 viewing platforms (visiting order) 1️⃣Viewing Platform 1 [Qicai Xianyuan Platform] The largest area. View the entire range of rolling colorful mountains from a distance. Perfect for wide-angle shots and panoramic photos. ✅Best for: Panoramic views of the mountains, photos with people and the Danxia landscape. 2️⃣Viewing Platform 2 [Qicai Yunhai Platform] The highest vantage point. The layered, wave-like striped mountains are the most popular "viral" images you see online. The color layers are the richest here; definitely worth spending more time exploring. 3️⃣Viewing Platform 3 [Qicai Jinxiu Platform] Striped ribbon-like mountain ridges with horizontal color bands and delicate textures. Great for observing rock textures up close. 4️⃣Viewing Platform 4 [Qicai Hongxia Platform] ⭐Key The prime spot for sunset. When the setting sun hits the mountains, the red and orange tones are fully saturated. Most of the stunning photos you see come from here. ⚠️Downside: It is packed with people at sunset; you will need to get there early to secure a spot. Visiting order: The sightseeing bus will take you in order. You do not need to plan your own route; just get off at each stop to sightsee, and wait at the platform for the next bus to take you to the next stop. ⚠️Practical "avoid the pitfalls" list (Important!) ❌Do not step on the Danxia surface. The soil is extremely fragile, and footprints will not disappear for decades. There are security guards patrolling, and you will be fined for stepping on it. Only walk on the wooden boardwalks; do not go off onto the dirt paths at any time. ❌Do not just come at noon under the blazing sun. At noon, the overhead light makes the mountains look washed out and gray, and you will not see the vibrant colors. The golden hours are 1 hour after sunrise and 2 hours before sunset. ❌Do not over-filter. The real colors are not as saturated as the photos online. On cloudy days, the colors will be duller, so lower your expectations. The colors are only brilliant on sunny days, especially at sunset. ❌There are no restaurants inside the park. There are only a few small kiosks selling water. Bring your own food and bottled water. ❌Outfit tips: Avoid wearing red or orange clothing, as you will blend into the mountains and your photos will not look good. Choose white, black, or light blue for better contrast and great photos. ❌Do not trust roadside solicitors offering to "take you to the wild Danxia." Wild spots have no railings and are very easy to fall from. Many are undeveloped protected areas, and you will be fined. For a proper visit, only go to the official Qicai Danxia Scenic Area. 📸Photography tips ✔️Telephoto lens: Use a telephoto lens on the viewing platform to compress the mountain textures and capture that layered oil painting effect—just like the cover photo. ✔️Wear a long dress and stand sideways to the mountains on the boardwalk to take atmospheric silhouettes. The sunset silhouettes are amazing. 🎒Essential packing list ✔️Hat, sunglasses (the UV rays in the Northwest are extremely strong), sun-protective mask, sunscreen ✔️Jacket. The temperature difference between day and night is huge. After sunset, the temperature in the mountains drops rapidly, and it gets very windy ✔️Bottled water, a few small snacks ✔️Comfortable sneakers; you will be walking back and forth on the boardwalks, and it is quite a bit of walking 💛Final thoughts Nature's craftsmanship is truly breathtaking. Colorful mountains stretch across the Gobi Desert. This is not a polished "viral" theme park; it is the majestic and vast Northwest landscape. Avoid the noon sun, catch the right light, and you will be able to see this palette of the earth with your own eyes.

If you ever find yourself in Zhangye, don't make the mistake of visiting the Rainbow Mountains in the middle of the day. The Zhangye Danxia Landform is one of those landscapes that looks almost impossible to be real — layer upon layer of red, orange, yellow and ochre hills, created by millions of years of geological processes. The best time to visit is in the late afternoon, about two hours before sunset, when the changing light brings out the colours in the landscape. Well… that was the plan. 😂 Except that I arrived on a very grey, overcast day. Not only was there no golden sunset nor dramatic glowing sky for me, it even started raining. I was cold, slightly damp and wondering whether I had made a terrible decision as I made my way around the viewing platforms. But there was a silver lining — the rain actually made the colours of the Danxia deepen significantly. The reds became richer, the layers more pronounced, and the whole landscape took on a much moodier, almost surreal quality. So perhaps I didn't get the sunset I came for, but I got something I wasn't expecting. 😊 🌈 The route The easiest sequence is to start from the North Gate and follow the sightseeing bus through the platforms: Qicai Xianyuan → Qicai Yunhai → Qicai Jinxiu → Qicai Hongxia Save your time for Hongxia Terrace, the final platform, where you can settle in for sunset before taking the bus back to the North Gate. 🚕 Getting there The scenic area is around 40–50 minutes from Zhangye city. I took a taxi/car from the city, but here's the important bit: Ask your driver to wait for you and take you back to Zhangye. Don't assume you'll easily find a taxi waiting outside after sunset — especially if you've deliberately stayed until the end of the day. 🎟️ Admission: RMB 70 🚌 Sightseeing bus: RMB 38 💰 Total: RMB 108 ⏰ Opening hours are seasonal, so check the current hours before you go. And despite the cold, the rain and the missing sunset, I wouldn't change the timing. Because sometimes the landscape doesn't give you the picture you came looking for. It gives you a different one. And sometimes, the rainy one turns out to be better. 🌧️🌈

If you’ve ever wondered what it would look like if nature traded its usual green and brown palette for a box of vivid watercolors, the Zhangye Danxia Landform in Gansu Province, China is your answer. Millions of years in the making, this geological wonder was formed as red sandstone and mineral deposits were layered down over 24 million years. Tectonic plate movements pushed these compressed layers upward, creating dramatic rolling mountains and sharp cliffs. Over eons, relentless wind and rain carved the soft stone into undulating ridges. Historically situated right along China’s ancient Northern Silk Road, merchants and travelers once trekked past these arid, colorful hills. Today, the "Rainbow Mountains" stand as a breathtaking testimony to the raw power and artistry of the natural world. Getting out to this technicolor dreamscape is surprisingly slick and straightforward thanks to China’s high-speed rail network. The most popular gateway is Zhangye West Railway Station, which connects seamlessly to major hubs like Lanzhou or Xi'an. Once you step off the high-speed train, the park sits roughly 40 kilometers away. You can hop on a local public shuttle bus from the station, or take a quick 40-minute taxi straight to the park's main entrance. Admission runs around ¥74 to ¥93 RMB (roughly $10 to $13 USD), which includes access to the internal sightseeing buses that transport you between the designated viewing platforms. To catch the mountains at their absolute most intense, plan your visit for late afternoon into the golden hour. As the sun drops, the low-angled light catches the mineral stripes and transforms the hills into glowing waves of deep magenta, rich ocher, and pale teal. Head straight for Hongxia Terrace (Platform 4)—it’s widely considered the premier sunset viewing spot in the park. Pro local tip: if you happen to catch a light rain shower earlier in the day, you've hit the ultimate jackpot! Moisture on the sandstone acts like a natural polish, drastically saturating the mineral pigments and making the colors pop like a freshly painted canvas. Just remember that the rock formations are extremely fragile, so stick strictly to the raised boardwalks and bring layers to handle the cool desert breeze once the sun goes down. #ZhangyeDanxia #RainbowMountains #GansuTravel #ChinaTravel #SilkRoad #ExoticDestinations #NatureIsArt #Wanderlust #BucketListTravel

No filter. No Photoshop. No AI. These mountains actually look like someone took a giant paintbrush and dragged it across the landscape. Welcome to Zhangye Danxia National Geopark in Gansu, China — one of the most surreal geological landscapes on Earth. ❤️🧡💛💚 The mountains are covered in dramatic layers of red, orange, yellow, green, purple and gray. But the colors aren’t artificial. They are the result of millions of years of sedimentation, tectonic movement, mineral deposits, wind and water erosion slowly shaping the landscape into what we see today. And this is what makes Zhangye so fascinating: The colors aren’t simply painted across the mountains. They follow the natural geological layers, creating incredible stripes and waves that stretch across entire ridges. ☀️ And sunlight changes everything. Depending on the time of day and weather, the same mountains can look completely different. Early morning and late afternoon light can make the colors appear dramatically richer. 📍 WHERE: Zhangye, Gansu Province, China 🏔️ KNOWN AS: The Rainbow Mountains of China 🌍 WHY IT’S SPECIAL: A spectacular Danxia landform with intensely colored geological layers 📸 BEST FOR: Photography, scenic viewpoints, nature and geology lovers 🥾 EXPERIENCE: Walk the designated viewing routes and watch the landscape change with the light The area is also part of China Danxia, which was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2010. The trip starts and ends in Lanzhou, with small groups of 3–7 people traveling in style. Comfortable 5-, 7-, or 9-seat vehicles accompany the journey, avoiding crowded buses. The entire trip is purely for sightseeing with no shopping stops, allowing plenty of free time for photography. The route connects four secret poplar forests: poplars reflected in the clear waters by Jinta, with gentle streams and small bridges offering a soothing atmosphere; the soft water and sand of Ruoshui’s Golden Sand Bay showing tender beauty; Ejina poplar forest, the filming location of "Hero," where reflections at Erdao Bridge and the heroic forest at Sidao Bridge create perfect photo spots; and the strange forest with gnarled dead trees, revealing a thousand years of history under the sunset and starry sky. More than just poplars, the journey holds many surprises. Head to the Badain Jaran Desert to witness the rare sight of sand dunes coexisting with blue lakes. Experience sandboarding and camel riding to fully immerse yourself in desert culture. At dawn, visit Juyan Lake to see the sunrise dye the water red, with seagulls flying over the reeds, capturing a watercolor-like sunrise scene. Explore the Pingshan Lake Grand Canyon, where layers of red rock rise dramatically, rivaling the Colorado Canyon. Finish with a visit to Binggou River, where the Qilian snow mountains, primeval forest, and green meadows form a healing landscape painting, fulfilling the dream of mountains, sea, and grasslands. Accommodation is fully upgraded, with the first night at a four-star hotel in Lanzhou and the rest in carefully selected local standard rooms. Free 24-hour airport transfers in Lanzhou are included for double travelers. The trip includes 6 breakfasts, all attraction tickets, and shuttle buses along the route at one price. Core sites like Badain Jaran, Juyan Lake, and the poplar forests require no extra fees. Exclusive desert poplar forest tickets are also included, along with an outdoor headscarf, daily bottled water, and travel accident insurance. The 7-day pace is relaxed and well balanced, with long drives broken up reasonably. No rushing or ticking off check-ins. Chase sunrises in the early morning, watch sunsets at dusk, capture silhouettes of the strange forest under the stars, and stroll through golden forests by day. Both photography enthusiasts and leisure travelers will find their perfect scenery. Multiple group departures are available in September and October 2026, with only slight price adjustments during the National Day holiday. Miss it, and you’ll have to wait another year. Three thousand years of poplars await a season of gold, deserts, canyons, and lakes await your arrival. Take advantage of the perfect autumn light to embark on this northwest feast of fall colors, collecting the desert’s golden glow and the Gobi’s starry sky.

Many know about Zhangye Danxia, but few realize that deep in the Loess Plateau of northern Shaanxi lies a “fingerprint of the earth”! Jingbian Wave Valley (Longzhou Danxia) was shaped by billions of years of wind and rain erosion, forming red sandstone with layered waves like frozen red ocean waves. When sunlight hits, the red rocks glow with golden-orange hues, as if stepping onto an alien surface. There are many scams online for off-the-beaten-path tours. This verified official guide covers routes, best photo times, and tips to avoid pitfalls! 📍Location: Longzhou Town, Jingbian County, Yulin, Shaanxi | Shaanxi Wave Valley Scenic Area 🎫Ticket info (2026 update) Peak season Apr 1–Oct 31: 90 CNY/person Off season Nov 1–Feb 28: 60 CNY/person ✅Discounts: Full-time students half price; free admission for seniors 65+, children under 1.2 m, and active military Optional paid activities: glass viewing bridge 20 CNY, Feiyun escalator 15 CNY, not mandatory! ⏰Opening hours: 8:00 AM–5:30 PM (ticket sales stop at 5:00 PM, don’t arrive at closing time) Recommended visit duration: 3–4 hours; photographers are advised to stay overnight to catch sunrise and sunset 🚗Getting there ▫️Driving (recommended) From Xi’an: Baomao Expressway → Jingbian South exit, then drive 15 km, about 5.5 hours total From Yan’an: 2-hour drive; Jingbian town to the scenic area is only 22 km, about 30 minutes 🅿️Parking at visitor center costs 5–10 CNY/day. Navigate directly to Shaanxi Wave Valley Scenic Area ⚠️Important: Do not navigate to “Wave Valley Wild Scenic Area” to avoid being misled by local villagers! ▫️Public transport Take the high-speed train from Xi’an North to Jingbian Station, then taxi or carpool to the scenic area; limited schedules and low flexibility, not recommended for solo travelers. 🗺️Two tour routes to choose from ✅Large loop (for normal fitness, in-depth experience | recommended) Entrance → glass viewing bridge → Flame Danxia → Red Cliff Danxia → Yanjia Village ancient cave dwellings → Earth Core Danxia (One Line Sky) → Kilometer gallery → Water Danxia → exit ✅Small loop (for seniors, families, easy visit | 1 hour) Entrance → glass bridge → Flame Danxia → Liupotai viewing platform → return the same way, only covering core photo spots Four main photo spots 🔥 1. Flame Danxia [scenic area centerpiece] Rolling red rocks with smooth, three-dimensional wave patterns. The 2 hours before sunset are golden hours, when the sun dyes the cliffs fiery orange. Many stunning photos come from here! 2. Earth Core Danxia · One Line Sky A deep canyon with layered rock walls, the narrowest part only wide enough to pass sideways. At noon, sunlight pours vertically, casting beams on the cliffs for a dramatic effect. Known as a hidden light and shadow canyon in northern Shaanxi. 3. Water Danxia Red sandstone surrounds emerald water. When there’s no wind, the lake surface forms a mirror reflection, blending warm and cool colors. Best reflection photos are in the early morning. 4. Yanjia Village Hundred-year-old cave dwellings remain on the cliff, where yellow earth and red rock merge, exuding a historic cultural atmosphere. 📸Photo tips ▪️Best times 8:00 AM–10:00 AM (Water Danxia mirror reflections) 4:00 PM–sunset (Flame Danxia stunning backlight) Avoid noon direct light to prevent overexposure ▪️Outfit suggestions White, black, khaki, light beige long dresses or trench coats; avoid bright red to stand out from the rock background ▪️Tips: Use a wide-angle lens for wave patterns; sunset silhouettes add sophistication; drones allowed in permitted areas for aerial views of the earth’s fingerprint 🍜Food and lodging recommendations ▫️Accommodation: Jingbian town offers many options with full facilities; for early morning photos, stay in Longzhou Town cave dwellings ▫️Must-try northern Shaanxi dishes: air-dried mutton with buckwheat noodles, potato pancakes, yellow rice cake, Jingbian mutton noodles ⚠️Few shops inside the scenic area and prices are high; bring your own water and snacks ⚠️Essential tips to avoid pitfalls❗ 1. Avoid unlicensed guides and wild canyons! Local villagers offering cheap tours to undeveloped wild areas are illegal. The red sandstone is extremely fragile; footprints can last decades and cause irreversible damage. Violations may lead to penalties. Wild paths are prone to landslides. Always stay on official trails. 2. Danxia rock layers are fragile. Do not climb over railings, climb rocks, or carve on walls. Respect the landscape to protect this billion-year-old formation. 3. The Loess Plateau has strong UV rays and almost no shade! Bring sun hats, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen. Temperatures vary greatly between day and night, so pack a light jacket. 4. Wear non-slip sports shoes! Trails are covered with gravel and slippery when wet. Sandals are prohibited. 5. Prepare for windy and sandy weather; some canyon areas have weak signal, so save offline maps in advance. 6. Don’t confuse this with Zhangye Danxia! Zhangye is known for colorful stripes, while Wave Valley features three-dimensional flowing rock patterns. The styles are completely different. 📌Classic northern Shaanxi self-drive route 🔹2-day self-drive loop Day 1 Xi’an → Jingbian Wave Valley (enter in the afternoon, catch sunset, stay in Jingbian) Day 2 Wave Valley → Yan’an Qian Kun Bay → return This route combines Danxia red rocks and Yellow River bends, capturing northern Shaanxi’s scenery in one trip! 💬Travel thoughts Billions of years ago, this was an inland lake. Over time, mud and sand formed red rock waves. Standing before the layered cliffs, with wind blowing through the canyon, you can almost hear the earth’s long echo. No need to travel far—northwest China holds breathtaking geological wonders 🌄 ❓Do you prefer Danxia landforms or Yellow River canyon scenery? Setting off, I was sure the northwest would be hot, so I packed a full suitcase of short sleeves and skirts. But at dusk in the colorful Danxia, the wind was so cold I had to hunch my shoulders. The temperature difference between day and night here is truly beyond imagination. It’s scorching under the sun, but the drop in temperature comes suddenly. Here’s a guide for sisters planning a trip👇 ‼Travel tips 📌Zhangye’s Danxia landforms are vibrant, and the grasslands are lush, making this a great time to visit. The scenic spots are far apart, so travel time is long. Plan your daily itinerary in advance and avoid cramming too many spots into one day. 📌UV rays are very strong at noon, and the Danxia viewing platforms have almost no shade. Try to avoid going out during the hottest midday hours. 📌You can experience two very different temperatures in one day. Prepare for heat and bring a windproof jacket. Afternoon showers are possible, so don’t forget your rain gear. 🌈3-day essential itinerary 📍Day 1: Arrive in Zhangye → Ganzhou night market After settling in, spend the evening exploring the local night market. Try beef rice and fried pao, and soak in the small-town atmosphere. Choose accommodation in the city center for convenient dining and transportation. 📍Day 2: Watch the sunset at the colorful Danxia Don’t rush to the scenic area at noon. Enter after 4 PM and stroll along the viewing platforms, waiting for sunset. The mountain colors look especially beautiful in the evening light. The scenery after rain and clearing is even more stunning. 📍Day 3: Choose between Mati Temple or Pingshan Lake Grand Canyon → Return trip If you like grotto culture, pick Mati Temple. For spectacular canyon views, go to Pingshan Lake Grand Canyon. Canyon hiking is physically demanding, so manage your energy well. Afterward, prepare for your return. ✅Zhangye travel tips 1️⃣There’s a lot of walking outdoors, so wear slip-resistant, durable sneakers. Sandals aren’t suitable for the rocky trails here. 2️⃣Remember to dress in layers. Pair short sleeves with a light windbreaker. Take it off if it’s hot, and put it on when it cools down in the evening. 3️⃣Don’t slack on sun protection. Bring sunglasses, a sun hat, and arm sleeves. You can get sunburned even on cloudy days. 4️⃣The local climate is very dry. Drink plenty of water and carry lip balm and moisturizing skincare products. 5️⃣The Danxia rock layers are very fragile. Do not climb over railings or step on the formations. Please visit responsibly. ⭕Must-have items ✔Clothing: short sleeves, long pants, dresses, light windbreaker ✔Sun protection: sunscreen, sunglasses, sun hat, arm sleeves ✔Essentials: ID card, large water bottle, power bank, raincoat, moisturizing mask, lip balm

To be honest, I almost ruined my whole experience at the Rainbow Mountains. If you're planning a trip to Zhangye — learn from my blunders and don't repeat them 🫣 · -- ⏰ MISTAKE #1: THE WRONG SEASON I went during the worst time of year and was incredibly disappointed. The colors were pale, and the harsh winter sun just bleached everything out. Keep in mind: · ✅ June-October — the most vibrant colors, stable weather · ✅ After the rain — the colors literally pop and become twice as saturated · ❌ Winter — the colors fade drastically, and some areas might be closed off · ❌ Cloudy days — the mountains look flat and gray, the colors don't pop · -- 🌅 MISTAKE #2: I ARRIVED AT HIGH NOON The sun was directly overhead. The colors completely washed out and blended into a flat, boring mess. Here's what I learned: · ✅ Golden hours: sunrise (5:30–7:30 AM) or sunset (6:00–8:00 PM) — soft light, vibrant colors · ❌ High noon (11:00 AM–3:00 PM) — the harsh sun kills the contrast, photos look pale Pro tip: block out 3–4 hours for the park and get there around 4:00 PM. You'll catch both the gorgeous late-afternoon light and the epic sunset. · -- 📸 MISTAKE #3: I WENT BLIND ON THE VIEWPOINTS I hit up every single viewing platform but totally wasted time at spots that weren't even worth lingering at. Here are the 4 main viewpoints (following the shuttle bus route): #1. The ultimate 360° panoramic view, the famous S-curve road, best spot to catch the sunrise. #2. The most vibrant colors, perfect for portraits. #5. Way fewer crowds, seriously cool rock textures. #4. THE MAIN EVENT! Epic sunset views, hot air balloons, maximum color saturation (an absolute must!) Heads up: #4 is the ultimate payoff. Do not leave before sunset, even if you are exhausted . · -- Now you know exactly where I messed up. Do it right! Save this post so you don't repeat my rookie mistakes 🎨✨ Follow me ♥️

Ladies, listen up❗️I’ve been back from this hidden gem in Zhangye for a month and I’m still savoring it. July in Zhangye is like a skylight opened by heaven for the northwest🪟 The sun is strong but the breeze is cool. Wearing a dress isn’t hot, and wearing a jacket isn’t cold. The comfort level makes you want to settle down right there. 🚗 Here’s the travel info you need first Flights to Zhangye are limited, and direct flights are scarce. My route was flying to Lanzhou first, then from Lanzhou Zhongchuan Airport taking the high-speed train straight to Zhangye West Station. The whole trip takes less than two hours, and the ticket costs just over 100 yuan💰 The high-speed train from Lanzhou to Zhangye runs through the Hexi Corridor. The scenery outside the window changes from loess plateaus to Gobi oasis, then to distant snow-capped mountains. Two hours is nowhere near enough to take it all in. From Zhangye West Station, a taxi to the Danxia Scenic Area is about 40 km and takes around 50 minutes. If you don’t want to take a taxi, Zhangye West Bus Station has direct buses to the Danxia Scenic Area. It’s 15 yuan per person, with buses every half hour. During peak season, it’s best to arrive early and line up. For those driving, just navigate to "Danxia North Gate." The scenic area parking fee is 10–20 yuan per day. Parking is tight in summer⚠️ It’s best to arrive before 7 AM, or you’ll be circling outside waiting for a spot. 🏜️ How to make the most of Danxia Tickets cost 40 yuan plus 38 yuan for the sightseeing bus, totaling 78 yuan for a visual feast. The value is honestly tear-worthy😭 The summer opening hours are 5:30 AM to 7 PM. If you want to see the sunrise, get there early. At 5:30 AM, the park is so empty you might have the whole viewing platform to yourself. I visited all four viewing platforms and arranged the best route for you👇 ① Xianyuan Platform → the first one after entering, great for warming up and taking photos with soft lighting ② Yunhai Platform → the best spot for photos! The "Monks worshiping Buddha" formation looks most like the real thing here ③ Jinxiu Platform → closest to the colorful hills, where you can see detailed layering patterns ④ Hongxia Platform → platform 4‼️ The sunset hotspot. Come after 5 PM and stay put 📸 Photo tips: Wear solid red, white, or yellow long dresses. The colorful hills make busy patterns look messy. Drones are banned inside the park, so don’t bring one or you’ll be stopped. A telephoto lens works better than a wide-angle lens. It compresses the scene and makes the colors pop. 🌡️ Survival guide for July in Zhangye Daytime temperatures can soar above 35°C, but shaded areas cool down immediately. UV rays are nuclear-level☢️ Sunscreen with SPF 50 or higher is a must, along with sunglasses, a hat, and sun-protective clothing. I skipped sunscreen on day three and ended up with a peeling nose that made me question life. Humidity stays below 30% year-round. If you’re from the south, your lips will crack on day one💧 Bring lip balm and a moisturizing spray, and drink twice as much water as usual. Night temperatures drop to around 15°C, with a day-to-night temperature difference of over 10 degrees. A light jacket is essential. 🗺️ Three-day, two-night itinerary Day 1️⃣ Arrive in Zhangye → visit the Giant Buddha Temple in the afternoon (ticket 41 yuan, built during the Western Xia period, home to the largest indoor reclining Buddha in China, 34.5 meters long. Seeing it in person is way more impressive than photos) → watch the sunset at Danxia in the evening Day 2️⃣ Early morning sunrise at Danxia → visit Binggou Danxia in the morning (ticket 45 yuan plus 15 yuan sightseeing bus. This park is completely different from the colorful Danxia. It features window-frame palace-style Danxia formations, fewer crowds, peaceful atmosphere, and great climbing experiences) → rest in the afternoon Day 3️⃣ Full-day hike at Pingshan Lake Grand Canyon → return trip 🏨 Accommodation is the highlight ⛰️ The guesthouse is in Nantai Village just outside the north gate of the Danxia Scenic Area. It’s a few hundred meters from the gate, surrounded by local villagers’ unique courtyards. At night, it’s so quiet you only hear the wind ⛰️ The room has a full wall of floor-to-ceiling windows facing the Danxia. At around 5 AM, you don’t even have to get up. Just open the curtains and watch the glow slowly paint the hills🌄 The gradient from orange-pink to deep red is mesmerizing—I stared for 20 minutes without blinking ⛰️ The courtyard has a terrace lounge area with rattan loungers and a small tea table🍵 After watching the sunset, you can flop down on the lounger. The Danxia’s afterglow lingers in the distance, and with a cup of apricot peel tea in hand, life couldn’t be more perfect✨ ⚠️ A few final tips to avoid pitfalls ❶ There are no shade structures in the Danxia Scenic Area. It’s full sun exposure all the way. Bring an umbrella for sun protection and sudden rain ❷ The sightseeing bus runs about every 10 minutes. No need to rush, take your time ❸ July is peak season. Book accommodation at least two weeks in advance. Last-minute bookings are either three times more expensive or located 10 km away ❹ Distances from Zhangye city to attractions are not short. A private car for a day costs about 400–500 yuan. It’s best to share with 4 people ❺ The colors of Danxia are most vibrant after rain. If your schedule is flexible, plan your visit according to the weather forecast Zhangye is truly a place you want to visit again. The light, temperature, and colors in July are just right. The wildness and grandeur of the northwest can’t be captured in photos—you have to see it with your own eyes to understand what "God’s spilled palette" really means🎨 ——

July in Zhangye is truly an underrated treasure 🌈 With its Danxia landforms like God spilled a palette, prices still feel like five years ago. You can spend three days here without your wallet feeling light. Just got back, and while the memories are fresh, here’s a rundown of the spots I visited and the surprises I found. 🌞 Travel tips to note first July daytime temperatures in Zhangye can soar above 35℃, but mornings and evenings hover around 18℃. The temperature swings so much you can experience two seasons in one day. Pack your luggage in layers—short-sleeve base + light sun-protective jacket + windbreaker. The wind is crazy strong in the mountains (Matizi Temple, Biandukou direction), so don’t skip the jacket. The UV rays are brutal. Sunglasses, hat, and SPF 50 sunscreen are a must. Reapply often or you’ll come home two shades darker. Drones are banned throughout the Danxia Scenic Area. Don’t carry one and waste a trip. The light from 12 PM to 3 PM hits the mountains flat and makes colors look dull. Try to avoid that time. Aim for sunrise at 6–7 AM or sunset at 6–7 PM. After rain, the colors get so vivid you’ll question reality 🌧️✨ Basic tickets cost 93 yuan (includes shuttle bus, valid for 48 hours. If you want to catch sunrise and sunset on different days, just pay the extra bus fare). 🏔️ Recommended spots to avoid disappointment The colorful Danxia is the main attraction. Sunset at Rainbow Terrace No. 4 is legendary. Sunrise at Cloud Sea Terrace No. 2 is less crowded and offers clear views. Booking tickets on Trip.com is smoother than onsite. The VIP lane saves a lot of waiting time. Pingshan Lake Grand Canyon ticket + shuttle bus is 130 yuan. The canyon trail through the narrow sky and climbing ladders is tough on the legs but offers amazing photo ops. The reverse deep tour ticket is just over 300 yuan and includes camel and adventure car rides—perfect for those who want an easier experience. The Great Buddha Temple is in the city. For 40 yuan, see the 34.5-meter-tall largest indoor reclining Buddha in Asia. A good spot to rest and explore. Binggou Danxia is 62 yuan. Its palace-like window lattice formations contrast with the colorful Danxia. It’s quieter and less crowded, so no need to fight for photo spots. Matizi Temple is 87 yuan. The cliffside grottoes with 33 caves are a leg-shaking climb but offer incredible views. You can also visit the edge of the Qilian Mountain grasslands nearby. 🏨 Accommodation options If you want to catch Danxia sunrise and sunset, stay near Danxia Pass or Colorful Town. Guesthouses cost 100–200 yuan. Many owners offer private shuttle service to the scenic spots, saving early taxi costs. You can also walk there. If you prefer convenience for food and drinks, stay in the city near Drum Tower or Ganzhou Night Market. Prices range from 150–280 yuan per night. There are fish noodle shops and night markets downstairs, so no need to worry about dinner. Near the high-speed rail station, Dinghe and Jinhao hotels cost around 300 yuan with breakfast included—good for travelers on the go. Booking on Trip.com is recommended for price comparison. Prices rise slightly on summer weekends but are cheaper on weekdays. 🍜 Food is the soul of Zhangye Don’t rush off after Danxia. Zhangye’s noodles and hearty dishes are seriously underrated. Juanzi chicken (also called chicken wrapped in noodles) is a must-try. Local chicken stewed with potato starch noodles, handmade noodles soaked in chicken broth—this dish is legendary. Miao’s place serves a portion for 68 yuan, enough for 2–3 people. Order extra if you have a big appetite. Cuoyu noodles are handmade into small fish shapes. Whether stir-fried with sand chives or stewed with lamb, they’re excellent. A bowl costs 25 yuan and is filling. Chao Pao sounds scary but is actually stir-fried short noodles with braised meat, just over 20 yuan, and very chewy. For breakfast, try beef small noodles. Despite the name, it’s actually noodle pieces in a rich beef broth. For late-night snacks, head to Ganzhou Market or Mingqing Street for Shandan fried pasta. Lamb offal is stir-fried in a hot iron pot, full of local flavor. Pair it with apricot peel tea for 5–10 yuan to cut the grease. The small, unassuming shops in Zhonglou Alley and Nanguan Market are the most authentic. Follow the locals to the busiest spot and you won’t go wrong. After four days and three nights, spending just over 1,000 yuan per person lets you enjoy a comfortable trip. July’s Zhangye is bursting with color. Go before it becomes a viral sensation ✈️

July in Zhangye is tough and not recommended. The 37℃ steamy desert heat waves rise from the cracks along the cliff at the No. 1 viewing platform of the colorful Danxia, mixed with sudden cool Qilian Mountain thunderstorms that sneak into the collar of my linen cycling jersey. My high-SPF sunscreen is half melted and sticky. The freshly refilled iced horse hoof and apricot tea at the scenic area’s supply station is blown by the dry hot wind from Pingshan Lake Canyon, carrying the spicy aroma and bits of cumin from hand-pulled lamb that coat the back of my hand. The salty and spicy mix hits unexpectedly! In midsummer July, Zhangye’s Qilian rapeseed flower sea is in full bloom, paired with the exclusive sunset glow at Danxia. Holding a freshly grilled, juicy red willow lamb skewer, I hadn’t even finished walking half the cliffside plank road of Pingshan Lake Canyon when the lamb fat and oil were blown onto the side pocket of my vintage washed denim crossbody bag. The soles of my creek shoes, stained with tiny white quartz stones from the shallow Black River, are also dusted with cool Qilian Mountain snowmelt dew carried by the wind. The honey tangerine sunset bathes the colorful Danxia layered rocks in dazzling golden silk. Soft rain clouds drift down from the Qilian foothills toward the Matisi Grottoes, mixing the aroma of scorched noodles with the fresh, sweet, and sour scent of Li Guang apricot slush that fills my nose at dawn. Who understands this, family! I just bit into a chewy, fragrant freshly stir-fried noodle in an old alley in Zhangye. The fresh aftertaste of aromatic vinegar and chives still lingered in my throat when a 38℃ steamy desert heat wave swept over, carrying sand and dust. The cool thunderstorm raindrops rolling over the Pingshan Lake Canyon pass seeped directly into my hiking pants cuffs. The custom Dunhuang flying copper bell charm hanging on my backpack jingled against the stainless steel iced tea cup. I hadn’t even moved to the prime, unobstructed sunset spot at the No. 4 colorful Danxia viewing platform I’d reserved early. My fingertips were wrinkled from the dry hot wind, almost causing me to lose the screenshot of the exclusive Danxia deep tour reservation code I’d saved for two months. I nearly opened the app to instantly book the next late train from Zhangye back home to collapse under a 24℃ air-conditioned blanket, munching on iced Li Guang apricots. Looking up, I unexpectedly ran into the honey tangerine sunset spreading soft light over the colorful Danxia layered rocks. The entire colorful hill surface shimmered with a layer of gold flakes. Even the blue-purple petals of the lilyturf flowers along the path were edged with a warm orange glow. The sticky sweat on my back from the heat instantly vanished, replaced by the fresh scent of the Qilian rapeseed flower sea, leaving no trace behind! 📍 Location: Zhangye, Gansu, full Danxia Qilian tour Address: Zhangye City, Gansu Province. Use navigation to find precise scenic spots Tickets: July summer joint ticket for colorful Danxia + Pingshan Lake Canyon about 312 yuan. Matisi Grotto special cave tour and Qilian grassland horseback riding are optional. During sudden severe thunderstorms, canyon cliffside trails may close temporarily. Core Danxia viewing platforms may be controlled or evacuated. Please confirm mountain access status one day in advance via the official Zhangye culture and tourism WeChat account Recommended time: 5:50 AM–8:40 AM / 4:20 PM–9:30 PM to avoid the 11 AM–4 PM period when Danxia rocks are scorching hot and sudden downpours can drop temperatures by 12℃, soaking jackets halfway. These times perfectly capture the sea of clouds over Qilian peaks and the golden rapeseed slopes, plus the sunset dyeing the entire colorful hills in flowing rainbows. This also avoids the summer crowds of students queuing for 85 minutes at the Danxia viewing platforms. 📒 July Danxia sunset + rapeseed flower season tips: 1. Don’t believe the online hype about “wearing a flowing red dress in July to shoot amazing Danxia photos.” The 36℃ heat at the foot of the mountain drenches your back in sweat, while the 14℃ cold rain in the mountain streams chills your collar—two extreme conditions combined. A windproof, wide-brimmed, quick-dry, breathable sun mask plus thick-soled creek shoes that protect against thorns and sand are essential. After hiking 10 km along the Pingshan Lake cliff canyon and 5 km on Danxia trails, the exposed back of my neck was protected from the desert’s hot sand grains. The cool rainwater splashed on the fabric surface dried quickly without soaking through. 2. To capture the full-frame sunset glow without crowds, avoid the crowded No. 4 main viewing platform. Move 30 meters to the side to a small, quiet slope platform. Low-angle shots can capture the entire colorful Danxia hills and the snow-capped Qilian mountains in the distance. Selfie stick users won’t even fit half their arm in the frame. These shots will blow up your social feed. 3. Never wear white mesh dad shoes to run on the Black River shallow beach! The red-brown Danxia mud and white quartz bits get stuck in the mesh and are impossible to clean even after half an hour of scrubbing in the old alley guesthouse corridor in Ganzhou. To avoid late-night shoe cleaning by lantern light in a northwest wind, choose fully enclosed waterproof creek shoes. After stepping on the hot stones of the shallow beach, a quick shake removes all the sand. Rinsing with spring water for 2 seconds leaves no red mud stains. 4. Don’t overpay for souvenirs at the scenic area’s trendy cultural shops. Head to the old dried fruit shop next to Ganquan Park, open for 22 years. For 28 yuan, you can fill a large bag with handmade sun-dried Li Guang apricots. The owner even offers a free half-box of homemade horse hoof apricot iced soup to taste. It’s nearly half the price and more authentic than the scenic area shops. 5. To shoot an empty panoramic view of the Qilian rapeseed flower sea, don’t stick to the main trail viewing platforms. Walk 26 meters to the small hidden pastoral slope beside the flower fields. The golden flower sea stretches with the wind toward the Qilian snow mountains. Even bloggers carrying live streaming rigs rarely find this spot. 👗 Dressing guide: ✔️ Wear a bright red or dark blue quick-dry short T-shirt with subtle dark-patterned rock colors! The strong contrasting colors match the electric Danxia and the rapeseed flower sea, creating National Geographic-level northwest wilderness vibes. Posting on social media will get 99+ comments with no one wearing the same outfit. ✔️ Thick-soled, sand-proof, slip-resistant creek shoes are a must! After walking the entire hot desert gravel road, your soles won’t slip or blister. A quick wipe with a wet tissue removes red willow barbecue cumin oil stains instantly. ✔️ Carry a portable sand-proof phone pouch around your neck. The desert’s hot, dusty wind won’t get into the earpiece. Squatting by the viewing platform to shoot slow-motion Danxia sunsets won’t blur your shots. It’s 100 times better than keeping your phone in your pocket and having the charging port clogged with fine sand. 🚗 Transportation: The Zhangye culture and tourism scenic area direct shuttle is the most convenient! The route takes 1.2 hours along the desert scenic avenue with no detours. The freshly squeezed Li Guang apricot juice I bought at the station still had cool dew on the cup when I arrived at the foot of the colorful Danxia. A 3-minute walk from the stop leads straight to the red willow barbecue stall at the alley entrance. Now I’m sitting on the stone steps of the Danxia slope, enjoying freshly grilled juicy red willow barbecue. The wind carries the fresh scent of the rapeseed flower sea past my ankles. I’ve gone through over 1,800 photos of the sunset-colored hills, deleting and rechecking but can’t bring myself to delete any. The tiredness and the half-soaked short sleeves from the thunderstorm are instantly forgotten. The tiny white quartz bits stuck in my creek shoes will be tucked into my journal at home. This isn’t suffering at all. Back at the old alley guesthouse in Ganzhou, I found the mini Li Guang apricot popsicle the dried fruit shop owner gave me. Soaked in desert wind, it carries the fresh, sweet, and sour taste of apricot. Sipping apricot peel tea, I’m instantly transported back to July in Zhangye, wrapped in the desert heat and sunset glow, hhhh

July in Zhangye is so refreshing that even the wind carries the broken light of Danxia sunset! The afterglow is so strong that when I got home and saw the evening glow, I instinctively opened the window looking for the colorful mountains😭✨ Who understands! In July, Zhangye avoids the scorching noon heat of the Hexi Corridor. The 24℃ evening breeze mixed with the sweet scent of Gobi apricots and Li Guang apricots slips into your collar. The colorful mountains, ancient passes, and grasslands come together to form a half-frame Silk Road masterpiece. A week after returning, I even want to squeeze out some of that Danxia-style honey sweetness when peeling oranges. My mind is full of the scattered light leaking from the Buddha caves carved into the cliffs at Mati Temple! · ----- 🌈1. Danxia No. 1 viewing platform sunset spot Layers of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, brown, and purple stretch along the mountain folds to the horizon. The wind sweeps past the mountain edges, and the cloud shadows create flowing colorful ribbons. Even the exposed gravel is soaked in bright mineral colors. This is a magical landscape you won’t find on flat ground. 👉Tip: Arrive 1 hour before sunset to secure a spot. Wear a plain white dress to contrast with the colorful mountains. Shoot from a low angle to capture the sunset colors covering the mountaintop. The original photos will blow up on Xiaohongshu! 🏮2. Mati Temple 33 heavens grotto walkway The Buddha caves are carved layer by layer into the reddish-brown cliff walls. Wooden stairs wind through the rock crevices, suspended in midair. Looking up, you see skylights letting down beams of golden light onto the statues. Below, snowmelt from the Qilian Mountains flows, making a tinkling sound at the mountain base. The thousand-year-old Zen atmosphere goes straight to your crown. 👉Tip: Come early at 9 AM when it’s least crowded. Use the slanting light to shoot the grottoes embedded in the cliffs. It feels like a secret martial arts realm with no duplicates! 🌾3. Bian Dukou rapeseed flower viewing platform in Minle Vast fields of bright yellow flowers stretch to the foot of the Qilian Mountains. Snow-capped peaks float above golden waves. The wind carries the floral scent to your face. Beekeepers set up honey buckets by the roadside. Yellow butterflies circle the flower spikes, making you want to jump for joy on the spot. 👉Tip: Shoot at 3 PM against the light. Wear a bright red top and stand in the flower sea. Snow mountains and yellow flowers in the same frame make the photos more vivid than a painting! 🏜️4. Pingshan Lake Grand Canyon narrow sky trail The red giant rocks split to form a narrow strip of sky. The gravel path crunches underfoot. Mountain wind blows coolly through the gap. The rock walls are wind-eroded into countless strange folds. Looking up, you see a strip of blue sky with clouds drifting slowly. 👉Tip: Hike the valley bottom side trail. Don’t just stay at the viewing platform. Shoot people standing in the narrow gap framed by giant rocks. The wild, rugged vibe will blow up the scene! 🛕5. Great Buddha Temple side corridor of Asia’s largest reclining Buddha hall The 35-meter-long Ming Dynasty clay reclining Buddha lies quietly inside the hall. The gold leaf Buddha face blends with warm light. Behind it, murals depict Journey to the West and Silk Road stories. Outside, ancient locust trees cast dappled shadows. Even the air carries the scent of old wood. 👉Tip: Shoot the reclining Buddha’s half face in the light gap of the side corridor. The light and shadow soften the Buddha’s expression, instantly touching the humanistic atmosphere! 🌅6. Desert park sunset camel trail The sand is warm from the sun. The camel caravan’s shadows stretch long on the sand slope. In the distance, the Qilian snow mountains frame the yellow sand. The orange-red sunset dyes the sky a honey-orange. The wind stirs fine sand around your ankles, soft and gentle. 👉Tip: Choose the evening to ride camels slowly. Shoot the camel bells swinging at the neck, scattering the sunset glow. The Silk Road ancient trail vibe overflows the screen! · ----- 🍜 must-try list ▪️Hardcore experience: freshly grilled Gobi red willow barbecue! Tender lamb soaked in red willow wood aroma, juicy when bitten, spicy chili powder coats your mouth with fragrance ▪️Local old shop: sauced noodles with thin, smooth toppings and soup noodles. The noodles are chewy and the broth is savory. You’ll drink every drop of the soup ▪️Silk Road exclusive: chilled Li Guang apricot peel water, sour and sweet apricot aroma hits your crown, instantly cooling the summer heat! · ----- ✅ cautionary tips 1. July noon in the Gobi is scorching enough to peel skin. Bring 1.5 liters of ice water and a physical sun protection face shield. Exposed skin will turn red and blister after half an hour 2. Danxia terrain soil is extremely soft. Don’t step into the restricted colorful hill areas. One wrong step damages 60 years of natural restoration. Don’t be the culprit 3. Sudden rain along Bian Dukou cools the temperature instantly. Carry a windproof thin jacket. The mountain wind will give you goosebumps on your arms 4. No signal at the bottom of the Grand Canyon. Don’t wander alone on undeveloped side trails. Follow the guide signs to avoid getting lost! July in Zhangye gathers the most colorful mountain views and wildest Gobi winds of the Silk Road here. Before leaving, I stood by the Danxia watching the sunset spread over the mountains, wishing I could fill my pockets with the apricot-scented Gobi breeze to take home🥹!

The July heat in Zhangye is over, and I really don’t recommend going. The Danxia colorful rock mountains are so hot they burn your shoe soles, plus the dry, hot Gobi wind carries fine sand that sneaks into your collar for a brutal roasting experience! A real July summer experience in Zhangye | Holding freshly bought apricot peel tea, I hadn’t even walked 100 meters before the steam made the flavor heavy. After stepping on countless colorful gravel, red sand filled my hiking shoes, but I still had to capture the rainbow Danxia glowing golden under the sunset, plus the Pingshan Lake Grand Canyon where the wind sweeps eagles low past the ocher rock cliffs and crevices 🗻 Who understands, family! Just after biting into freshly bought milk egg fermented rice at the Danxia viewing platform, before the sweet aroma even settled, the Gobi hot wind blew fine sand into my mouth, making my teeth grit. I opened the ride-hailing app to book a car and rush back to the city to collapse in an air-conditioned rental. Then I looked up and saw the orange-red sunset soaking the entire colorful hills in molten gold. Even the camel grass sprouting from the rock cracks was edged in warm light. The headache-inducing heat and irritation instantly blew away with the wind! 📍 Location: Zhangye Address: Zhangye City, Gansu Province, core cultural tourism area of Danxia Colorful Landform + Pingshan Lake Grand Canyon + Great Buddha Temple Tickets: July summer pass for Danxia Colorful Landform (including sightseeing bus) about 148 yuan, Pingshan Lake Grand Canyon admission pass (including shuttle bus) about 298 yuan, Great Buddha Temple single admission about 40 yuan. Please verify overall ticket prices online in advance. Recommended time: 6:00 AM–9:00 AM / 5:30 PM–9:00 PM to avoid the 12:00 PM–4:00 PM period when the Danxia bare rock is exposed to over 43°C heat. These times catch the morning Gobi pink haze drifting over the colorful hills and the evening sunset turning the entire rock mountain orange—a perfect window for stunning photos. 📒 Summer West Hexi Corridor tips from real experience: 1. Don’t believe the online claims that “July Gobi mountain winds are cool and refreshing”! The bare rock reflects heat and the 38°C dry hot wind combine for a double whammy. An ice-cooling sun mask plus a neck-hanging water-cooled mini fan are must-haves. I tested the whole route and my exposed neck didn’t get sunburned, and after walking 3 km on the Danxia trail, my lips didn’t dry or peel! 2. Don’t crowd the railing at Danxia Colorful Landform viewing platform No. 1 holding selfie sticks and making peace signs. Walk 20 meters to the side on the empty dirt slope path. A low-angle downward shot captures the entire colorful rock waves stretching to the horizon along the mountain shape, without even a shadow of passing sightseeing buses spoiling the frame. 3. Don’t wear white sneakers on the Pingshan Lake Canyon gravel paths! Fine red sand mixed with rock debris fills your shoe gaps. When you empty your shoes back at the hotel, you’ll pour out a handful of sand. To avoid spending half an hour cleaning shoes, choose hiking shoes with deep tread and good coverage. They’re stable enough to walk on loose gravel without slipping. 4. When buying Linze jujube souvenirs, don’t just grab from the first specialty store at the Danxia entrance. Head to the local dried fruit shop at the Ming and Qing street alleys in Zhangye old town. For 30 yuan, you can get a big bag of freshly sun-dried pitted jujubes, and the owner will throw in a small jar of homemade sour jujube syrup for free. It’s almost half the price of the chain stores in the scenic area. 5. To shoot an empty panoramic view of the canyon crevice, don’t linger at the main viewing platform. Walk 300 meters along the less-traveled hiking trail behind Pingshan Lake. Look up to see a narrow strip of sky so blue and clear, with brown-red rock walls extending down to the valley floor. Not a single person will come close to steal your shot. 👗 Dressing guide: ✔️ Light orange and off-white cotton-linen sports sets are amazing! The warm, bright soft tones paired with the colorful hills and ocher rock walls make photos look like stills from a Western road movie. Posting on social media will flood your comments with compliments and no one will have the same outfit. ✔️ Soft-soled hiking shoes with strong coverage must be glued to your feet! Walking on gravel paths and Danxia sand trails won’t cause blisters. Even after 18,000 steps, your soles won’t ache. ✔️ Pack a wide-brim sun hat with a windproof cord. The Gobi gusts won’t blow it off, and it blocks the sun and fine sand from hitting your face. It’s a hundred times easier than trying to take photos squinting through sand-filled sunglasses. 🚗 Transportation: The best choice is to fly into Zhangye Ganzhou Airport and rent a car! Drive along the Hexi Corridor scenic highway and you can reach the Danxia scenic area ticket gate in an hour. If you want to detour to Pingshan Lake Grand Canyon, you won’t have to squeeze into a shuttle bus full of sand. You can stop anytime to pick fresh Li Guang apricots hidden by the roadside. Thinking back to sitting at the old town night market scooping chilled fermented rice, the wind carrying the Gobi’s dry freshness brushing my ankles, the thousands of colorful red rock photos saved on my phone that I can’t bear to delete, the fine sand in my mouth and red soil in my shoes forgotten instantly—such an amazing Western landscape is worth a little sunburn. When I got home and dug into my bag, the Linze jujubes I brought were sweet and soft from the Gobi wind. The first bite’s honeyed sweetness coated my tongue hhhh

Girls, I really want to thank you all 😭 Visiting Zhangye in July was a total sunburn experience. The city felt like it was over 30°C, but once I entered the Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park, it was like stepping into another world. 🔥 I have a lot to say about the colorful Danxia Entering the park at 4 PM was, in my opinion, the smartest move. Why? Because in summer, the sunset is late—around 8 PM the light starts to soften. If you go in at 4 PM, you can comfortably visit the first three viewing platforms and then settle in at the fourth platform to catch the sunset. 👉 Platform 1, Xianyuan: Honestly, it’s a bit flat. From a distance, it looks like a spilled palette, but it’s too far away to see the layers clearly. You can finish here in about 10 minutes. 👉 Platform 2, Yunhai: Slightly better. You can see the colorful ridges with overlapping layers, but honestly, I spent the whole time trying to find angles to avoid crowds… July is peak season and very busy. 👉 Platform 3, Jinxiu: My favorite!! Up close, the texture of the colorful hills is incredible, like a layered cake sliced horizontally by a divine knife. Red, gray-green, orange, and yellow layers stacked on top of each other. I spent nearly 40 minutes here taking photos, and my phone storage was almost full. 👉 Platform 4, Hongxia: The highlight at sunset. The entire mountain glows golden red under the setting sun, and you can visibly see the color saturation change. A guy next to me carrying a long lens camera actually shouted out loud. Honestly, I wanted to shout too. ⏰ My tested timeline: 4:00 PM enter the park and take the shuttle → 4:30 PM quick stop at platform 1 → 5:00 PM platform 2 → 5:30 PM slow photo session at platform 3 → 7:00 PM wait for sunset at platform 4 → 8:15 PM leave the park Outfit color tips: white or black photos best. Avoid red at all costs—it blends into the background and you disappear. 🏨 For lodging, I chose a cliff-view guesthouse near the north gate of the Danxia park. How to put it—when I opened the door, I was stunned for about three seconds—the entire floor-to-ceiling window faced the red hills of the Danxia foothills. You can watch the sunset from the room without stepping outside. The design is northwest wabi-sabi style, with rammed earth walls and natural wood furniture. The bathtub is by the window, and soaking while watching the desert sunset is almost unreal. The front desk guy said they only have about a dozen rooms, and during peak season they’re usually fully booked half a month in advance. I booked a cliff-view king room. The price in July was just over 1,000 yuan, including breakfast. Breakfast was made fresh by a local auntie, with noodles and steamed rolls—simple but delicious. Oh, and they light a bonfire on the terrace at night, but I was too tired that day. After showering, I fell asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow. The next day, my travel companions said the bonfire lasted until 11 PM. 📌 A few practical tips: ① The park ticket includes the shuttle bus. Don’t be fooled by people at the entrance trying to sell “VIP access tickets.” Just buy through official channels. ② Drones are strictly prohibited inside the park. Don’t take chances—some people have been fined. ③ The UV rays in July are really strong. Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours—it’s not an exaggeration. I was lazy the first day and didn’t reapply, and my nose peeled right away. ④ It takes about 40 minutes by car from Zhangye city to the Danxia park. A taxi costs around 100 yuan. You can also share a ride. Before I left yesterday, my mom messaged to ask if I was eating well. I sent her a photo of instant noodles, and she blocked me for half an hour… 🌡️ Zhangye in summer is sunny but dry and not humid. The shaded areas are actually quite cool. The temperature difference between day and night is big. On the way back to the guesthouse at night, I put on a light jacket and it was just right. Overall, the colorful Danxia is definitely worth a special trip, but you have to pick the right time. If you go at noon, all you’ll get are overexposed photos and a sunburned self.
