Liulin travel guide and discussion

Key attractions in Liulin, such as Xiangyan Temple, Yuxu Palace, and Nanshan Park, are all free. Local prices are also very low; a bowl of wantuan costs only a few yuan. Once you arrive, you can explore at your leisure, with most of your budget going toward transportation and experiencing unique cave dwelling accommodations. 🗓️ Itinerary suggestion: Yellow River ancient town and Ming & Qing Dynasty architecture tour Day 1: Citywalk of ancient architecture in the county seat (all free) Take a shared ride from Lvliang Station to Liulin County (approx. 40 mins). In the afternoon, visit Xiangyan Temple (free). This Tang Dynasty temple combines architecture from the Song, Jin, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties and is known as the "Cave dwelling version of the Potala Palace." The Jin Dynasty Mahavira Hall and Ming Dynasty glazed tiles inside are worth a close look. Then, walk to Yuxu Palace (free) on the other side of the river. This Ming Dynasty Taoist temple is built on the hillside of Baoning Mountain. From the top, you can overlook the panoramic view of the confluence of the Sanchuan River in Liulin. The murals and sculptures are well-preserved. In the evening, head to Nanshan Park (free) and climb the Nanshan Pagoda to watch the sunset and the night view of the county. At night, visit the 18-Meter Street Night Market, where you can enjoy a satisfying meal of wantuan, guanchang, and youmian for an average of CNY 20–30 per person. Day 2: Qikou ancient town + Lijiashan, stay by the Yellow River Depart from Liulin in the morning for Qikou Ancient Town (approx. 1-hour drive). Qikou was a Ming and Qing Dynasty trading port along the Yellow River. The ancient town is free. Stroll along the 5-li long street to see old exchange shops and warehouses, and climb the Heilong Temple to overlook the bend of the Yellow River for a stunning view. For lunch, have Yellow River carp in the ancient town, costing about CNY 50–80 per person. In the afternoon, head to Lijiashan Village (free), described by Mr. Wu Guanzhong as the "Little Potala Palace of the Loess Plateau," where 11 layers of cave dwellings are built in tiers on the hillside—perfect for photos. Stay at a cave dwelling homestay in Qikou at night. Open the window to hear the waves of the Yellow River; the cave dwellings are warm in winter and cool in summer, offering a unique experience. Day 3: Sanchao ancient town + Yellow River Three Gorges, leisurely return In the morning, visit Sanchao Ancient Town (free), known as the "First Town of the Chinese Red Army." You can visit the site where General Liu Zhidan died and the Red Army Eastern Expedition Memorial Hall to experience revolutionary history. Afterward, head to the Yellow River Three Gorges Mother Peak Scenic Area (admission approx. CNY 60–100). Take a speedboat to surf on the Yellow River and see the "water surface intersection" spectacle formed by the confluence of three rivers—it's very exciting. Have a farmhouse meal in Sanchao Town for lunch, buy some Liulin red dates or wantuan as souvenirs, and then head back at a leisurely pace in the afternoon. 💰 Budget breakdown (total approx. CNY 1,400–1,500) · Major transportation (approx. CNY 1,000–1,100): This is the biggest part of the budget. There is no direct high-speed train from Pingxiang to Liulin; you need to transfer at Taiyuan South or Changsha South to Lvliang Station. Reserve CNY 1,100 for round-trip major transportation. · Local transportation (approx. CNY 100): Shared ride from Lvliang Station to Liulin County is about CNY 30/person; driving/shared ride from Liulin to Qikou Ancient Town is about 37 km, taking about 56 minutes; chartered car from Qikou to Lijiashan is about CNY 50 round trip. · Accommodation (approx. CNY 240): Day 1 economy hotel in the county seat is about CNY 120/night (e.g., Home Inn Neo (Liulin Qinghe Branch), opened in 2025, new facilities, near Xiangyan Temple); Day 2 Qikou cave dwelling homestay is CNY 200–400/night, estimated at CNY 150, totaling about CNY 270 for two nights. · Admission tickets (approx. CNY 60–100): Xiangyan Temple, Yuxu Palace, Nanshan Park, Qikou Ancient Town, Lijiashan, and Sanchao Ancient Town are all free. Only the Yellow River Three Gorges Mother Peak Scenic Area requires an admission ticket, about CNY 60–100. · Dining (approx. CNY 300): Prices are affordable. Liulin wantuan costs a few yuan per bowl, and you can eat well with guanchang, youmian, and helengzi for CNY 30–50 per person. 🍜 Local specialties · Liulin Wantuan: A provincial-level intangible cultural heritage. Made from steamed buckwheat noodles and topped with chili oil and aged vinegar, it is chewy, smooth, sour, and spicy—the most iconic snack in Liulin. · Liulin Guanchang: Known as the "hardcore breakfast," it is a unique combination of buckwheat noodles and pork intestine. · Yellow River Carp: Available in restaurants along the river in Qikou. The meat is tender and fresh; remember to ask for the price before ordering. · Helengzi: Made from grated potatoes, steamed, and served with tomato sauce or chili oil. It is a home-style dish in the Lvliang region. 💡 Practical tips · Transportation reminder: Attractions in Liulin are scattered, so driving or chartering a car is most convenient. If you are not driving, taking a shared ride from Lvliang Station to Liulin, and then taking shared rides locally to Qikou and Sanchao, is the most practical way. · Clothing advice: Qikou Ancient Town and Lijiashan have many bluestone roads and steps, so suitcases are inconvenient; a backpack is recommended. When walking on mountain roads and by the Yellow River, wear comfortable, non-slip sneakers and bring a light jacket. · Best season: Summer and autumn are the most comfortable. In summer, the Yellow River has a large water volume, making Hukou and the Three Gorges most spectacular; in autumn, red dates are ripe, and the scenery along the Yellow River road is beautiful. · Special reminder: Ask for the price of Yellow River carp before ordering to avoid unexpected costs at checkout. When visiting Xiangyan Temple and Yuxu Palace, do not touch the murals and colored sculptures inside the halls, and please keep quiet. This small town by the Yellow River, with its free Ming and Qing Dynasty temples, stunning cave dwelling villages, and bowls of wantuan for just a few yuan, can offer you a very grounded and authentic experience~

July in Lüliang is truly an underrated summer getaway hidden in the dust 🌿. It’s just a 1-hour high-speed train ride from Taiyuan, with fewer people than Pingyao and cooler temperatures than Wutai. At night by the Yellow River, you’ll even need a light jacket 🧥. I just got back from Qikou, and while the memory is still fresh, I’m quickly writing this to guide anyone thinking of escaping to Shanxi in July ⚠️. 💰 Here’s a quick budget overview 3 days 2 nights, about 950–1,200 yuan per person for a very comfortable trip. Most of the cost is accommodation. Cave homestays in Qikou run 200–400 yuan per night, while chain hotels in Lishi district cost 190–290 yuan per night. Tickets aren’t expensive: Beiwudang is 72 yuan, Pangquangou rafting is 158 yuan, and the ancient town is basically free. Food is so cheap it’s almost heartbreaking—bowl cakes in Liulin cost just a few yuan per bowl, and meals average 30–60 yuan per person 🍜. The biggest expense is transportation—carpool from Lüliang station to Qikou is 30 yuan per person, and a round-trip private car to Lijiashan is 50 yuan. 🗺️ My easy itinerary (no rush version) Day 1: Settle in Lishi + overnight in Qikou Take the morning high-speed train to Lüliang station, then carpool straight to Qikou ancient town (about 1.5 hours by car) 🚗. Spend the afternoon leisurely strolling the Ming and Qing dynasty streets, climb Heilong Temple to overlook the Yellow River bend—it’s truly breathtaking. In the evening, find a riverside restaurant and order a carp, then fall asleep to the sound of the waves 🌊. Day 2: Early morning at Lijiashan + Beiwudang sea of clouds Get up early to visit Lijiashan, praised by Wu Guanzhong as the “Little Potala Palace of the Loess Plateau,” with 11 layers of stacked cave dwellings, free entry 📸. In the afternoon, drive to Beiwudang Mountain, where the temperature is in the low 20s in July. Day 3: Wine tasting in Xinghuacun + return trip Visit the Fenjiu Museum in Xinghuacun in the morning, free entry. Don’t overdo the tasting—the original 62-degree spirit is no joke 🥃. Have a lunch of Bai Zi lamb stew in the city, over 80 yuan a plate, with no gamey taste. Take the high-speed train back in the afternoon for a perfect ending ✨. 💡 The key to not rushing: stay in Qikou the first night and Beiwudang the second afternoon. Don’t try to do it all in one day—the 18 hairpin turns on Lüliang’s mountain roads will wear you out 😭. 🏡 Accommodation recommendations (no risks) Top choice: cave homestays in Qikou ancient town 🏡 200–400 yuan per night with great atmosphere. Open the window to loess hills and the sound of the Yellow River waves. Honestly, don’t try to book last minute on July weekends—there are only about a dozen cave homestays, and walk-in inquiries usually come up empty. Booking early on Trip.com 7–14 days ahead is safest. For more comfort, stay in Lishi district 🏨 Search “Lüliang Lishi” on Trip.com: Atour 290+ yuan, new facilities and good service Vienna 190+ yuan, best value for money Chain Super 8 for 60–70 yuan, student-friendly Around Xinghuacun 🍶 For a deep dive into wine culture, stay at a Xinghuacun wine culture homestay for 300–500 yuan per night, including tasting activities, just a 5-minute walk from the Fenjiu scenic area. 💵 Price highlights 🎫 Tickets Qikou ancient town: free (2 yuan to enter the West Wealthy Courtyard to see carved flowers) Beiwudang Mountain: 72 yuan (50 yuan one-way cable car) Pangquangou rafting: 158 yuan, perfect water level in July Xinghuacun Fenjiu Museum: free entry Guashan: 51 yuan adult ticket 🍜 Food and drink Liulin bowl cakes: a few yuan per bowl, buckwheat steamed with chili oil and aged vinegar Lin County Helengzi: mashed steamed potatoes dipped in tomato sauce or chili oil Zhongyang Bai Zi lamb stew: over 80 yuan a plate Yellow River carp: available at riverside restaurants, ask the price before ordering to avoid sticker shock 🚗 Transportation Taiyuan to Lüliang high-speed train: 1.5 hours Lüliang station to Qikou carpool: 30 yuan per person Qikou to Lijiashan round-trip private car: 50 yuan Car rental: 150–200 yuan per day 📸 Photo and outfit tips Lijiashan viewing platform offers panoramic views with golden loess walls glowing in the sunset—wide-angle shots come out great ✨. Heilong Temple eaves with the Yellow River background make for perfect overhead compositions. Kirin Beach water shots at sunset with the Yellow River’s colorful stones and flowing skirts are very photogenic 👗. Outfit advice: red and white best complement the loess. Avoid white sneakers—they’ll get ruined quickly on the village’s stone slopes and loose soil, and you’ll suffer. ⚠️ July afternoons often have showers, so a portable raincoat is more practical than an umbrella. Sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses are essential because the Yellow River’s reflection is intense ☀️. Ignore the wild guides at the village entrance—they give poor explanations and push red date vinegar sales. Rent an official audio guide if you want history. 🎒 Travel tips July daytime temperatures in Lüliang are 25–30°C, nights 18–22°C, naturally air-conditioned ❄️. But afternoon thunderstorms can come suddenly, so bring a light jacket and raincoat. Mosquitoes are fierce by the Yellow River, so don’t skimp on repellent. The “Yellow River strange stones” in the ancient town are overpriced; don’t buy if you’re not an expert. For red dates, buy from villagers drying their own for a better price 🤫. If you’re interested, open Trip.com now and search “Lüliang Lishi” or “Qikou ancient town” to see high-rated cave homestays and chain hotels at a glance. Booking 7–14 days in advance is safest. July in Lüliang is truly an underrated summer getaway hidden in the dust, just 1 hour by high-speed train from Taiyuan, with fewer crowds than Pingyao and cooler temperatures than Wutai 🌿.

To be honest, Lüliang isn’t very well known within Shanxi, but almost everyone who’s been there is captivated by the rugged Loess Plateau and the bold spirit of the Yellow River✨! There’s no over-commercialized tackiness, just the sunset at Qikou, the clouds over North Wudang, and streets full of spicy and sour bowl-shaped rice cakes. Just got back from the mountains, here’s a purely hand-crafted, AI-free guide with no ads, all solid info, community-compliant, ready to copy and use~ 💰 Budget reference (per person for 3 days 2 nights) Lüliang’s prices are quite reasonable for Shanxi, focusing on affordability. · Major transport: High-speed train from Taiyuan to Lüliang station takes about 1.5 hours, ticket around 50 yuan; flights to Dawu Airport or direct high-speed rail from other cities. · Accommodation: Chain/comfortable hotels in Lishi city area cost 150–250 yuan per night; cave house homestays in Qikou ancient town 180–260 yuan per night (window views of the Yellow River, full experience). · Admission tickets: Qikou ancient town is free (small attraction combo ticket about 50 yuan), North Wudang Mountain about 72 yuan, Pangquangou rafting about 158 yuan, Guashan about 51 yuan, other small attractions 20–30 yuan each, expect under 300 yuan total. · Food: Local snacks are super cheap, bowl-shaped rice cakes 8 yuan, spicy soup 15 yuan; main meals like oat noodles, stewed lamb 50–70 yuan per person, 100 yuan a day can eat very well. · Total: Budget travel 800–1,000 yuan, comfortable travel (including shared car rental) 1,200–1,500 yuan. Attractions are spread out, so self-driving or car rental (about 300 yuan per day) is recommended, reserve this budget. 🏞 Recommended attractions (tested and reliable) · Qikou ancient town: The first town on the winding Yellow River, much more authentic than Pingyao! Qing stone slab streets from Ming and Qing dynasties, Black Dragon Temple to watch the golden sunset over the Yellow River🌅, nearby Lijiashan village praised by Wu Guanzhong as the “Potala Palace on the Loess Plateau,” layers of cave houses with stunning light and shadow, a must-visit. · North Wudang Mountain: A northern Taoist holy site, with strange peaks and rocks somewhat like a smaller Mount Hua, 1,600 steps up make your legs shake but the sea of clouds at the top is worth crying for, ancient pines along the way with graceful shapes⛰️. · Pangquangou: The green lung of North China, summer average temperature just over 20°C, original forest hiking for fresh air, canyon rafting called “North China’s top rafting,” wet warning but super refreshing🌊. · Xinghua Village Fenjiu cultural area: A must for liquor lovers! The thousand-year-old liquor capital, visit the Fenjiu museum, explore underground wine cellars, the air is filled with the fragrance of fermenting grains, and you can taste the original brew (in moderation)🍶. · Guashan & Xuanzhong Temple: Guashan in Jiaocheng resembles the Bagua (eight trigrams), thousand-year-old cypress trees twist and turn; Xuanzhong Temple is the ancestral temple of the Pure Land sect, an ancient temple hidden deep in the mountains, so quiet only birdsong remains, perfect for meditation🙏. 🗺 Travel itinerary (3 days 2 nights Yellow River + famous mountains + liquor culture version) · Day 1 Yellow River ancient charm · Qikou sunset Morning arrival at Lüliang station → taxi/car rental straight to Lin County Qikou ancient town (1.5h) → stroll Ming and Qing old streets, Black Dragon Temple → after lunch hike or car rental to Lijiashan village for cave house light and shadow photos → evening return to ancient town dock to watch Yellow River sunset → overnight in cave house homestay listening to the waves. · Day 2 Taoist quest at Wudang · Xinghua liquor aroma Early departure from Yellow River → return to Fangshan North Wudang Mountain for uphill climb and blessing (3–4h) → after descending drive to Fenyang city → afternoon visit Xinghua Village Fenjiu cultural area for tasting and museum → stay in Fenyang or return to Lishi city for late-night snacks. · Day 3 Deep mountain green lung · relaxed return Morning hike in Pangquangou forest / summer rafting (clear cool water) → lunch at mountain foot with stewed native chicken → 2 PM return to Lüliang station or stop by Jiaocheng Guashan to see ancient cypress → return trip. 🍜 Food recommendations (Lüliang’s carb + meat universe) · Liulin bowl-shaped rice cakes: Lüliang’s top snack! Buckwheat steamed and cut into pieces, topped with garlic paste, chili oil, aged vinegar, chewy and spicy, great cold or hot, any old stall on the street won’t disappoint🥢. · Lan County potato feast: Potato lovers’ paradise! Mashed potato cake (soft and stretchy), Helengzi (steamed potato balls dipped in tomato sauce), crystal dumplings, 108 dishes made from coarse grains, soft, fragrant, and delicious🥔. · Lin County fried “evil” & big stew: Scary name but tasty! “Evil” is mashed potato mixed with starch steamed and fried, texture like konjac; big stew is potatoes, tofu, meat, and vermicelli stewed together, thick soup with fried dough cakes is very filling🍲. · Xing County spicy soup: Salty, numbing, sour, and spicy broth + lamb and carrot wontons + vermicelli, sprinkled with pepper powder, a bowl in the morning warms you to the core, paired with golden crispy pancakes🥣. · Zhongyang cypress-fed lamb: Lamb raised on cypress leaves, tender meat with almost no gamey taste, best salt-fried or clear stewed, the fat is irresistibly fragrant🐑. · Yellow rice oil cake & Xiaoyi baked flatbread: Oil cake is crispy outside, sticky inside with brown sugar, hot but you won’t want to spit it out; baked flatbread is crispy outside, layered inside, with brown sugar sesame or meat filling, a local breakfast staple🍘. 💡 Viral-level rambling (pitfall warnings) · Lüliang attractions are extremely spread out (Qikou, North Wudang, Pangquangou are in different counties), without self-driving or car rental you can’t get around, public transport is very limited and time-consuming, don’t force public transit😂. · Qikou ancient town main street is free, don’t believe the touts saying you must buy combo tickets, Lijiashan village ticket is about 15 yuan separately, compare several cave houses in the ancient town before booking, some are old so be prepared. · North Wudang Mountain stairs are steep and many, cable car for those with knee issues (one way 35 yuan), it’s windy at the top so bring a light windbreaker even in July and August, don’t just care about style; Pangquangou rafting is packed in summer, book tickets in advance, bring a change of clothes and waterproof bag. · Local flavors tend to be sour, spicy, salty, and oily, if you can’t handle strong tastes ask for less salt and vinegar, the chili oil on bowl-shaped rice cakes is very strong, start with mild spice🌶️.

Spring flowers are gradually blooming in Shanzhou, and a vibrant feast covering the entire region is about to begin. The Dikuangyuan Scenic Area, based on the theme of "an ancient village below the horizon," is bathed in spring sunlight, casting soft shadows among the loess cave dwellings. The historical texture quietly blends with new greenery, awaiting visitors for an immersive exploration. In Gantang Park, flowering trees such as Chinese pear, cherry blossoms, peach blossoms, and magnolias are ready to bloom. The Yiai Lake reflects the sky, offering a perfect place to enjoy flowers, rest, and city views while savoring the spring atmosphere in the city center. Famous painter Wu Guanzhong’s painting of Lijia Village sold for 27 million HKD in Hong Kong. Bringing the kids to Lüliang, we finally got to take a photo with this “sky-high priced masterpiece”! This place is seriously an underrated treasure for family trips. The two-day, one-night itinerary perfectly blends nature and culture. The kids had a blast, and I enjoyed taking photos to my heart’s content~ 📅 Day 1️⃣: Strolling the Ancient Town + Yellow River Scenery ⏱️08:30-11:00 Qikou Ancient Town Take the kids to explore the Ming and Qing dynasty commercial buildings. The “Changxing Shop” gatehouse is super nostalgic for photos. The kids wearing little Hanfu standing at the door instantly turn into ancient-style youngsters~ The stone steps at the Yellow River dock corner are a popular photo spot on Xiaohongshu. Sitting the kids on the steps with the rushing Yellow River behind creates an amazing atmosphere! Tianjulong Trading Company is the site of a Jin merchant bank. The second-floor window frame offers a perfect composition to overlook the ancient town street scene and experience Jin merchant culture~ For breakfast, be sure to try the “Qikou Bowl Tuo” at the old street entrance. Adding chili makes it even more fragrant. The kids ate a whole bowl and called it delicious~ ⏱️11:30-13:00 Heilong Temple The best photo time is at 11 AM when sunlight shines on the opera stage~ Find the temple caretaker to unlock the backyard viewing platform, where you can overlook the Yellow River’s S-bend. Bring the kids to feel the grandeur of the Mother River and tell them stories about the Yellow River—very meaningful~ ⏱️13:30-14:30 Lunch Recommended dishes at “Yellow River Family” are spicy pot fish and Helengzi (potato balls). The fish is tender, and the potato balls are soft and glutinous. The kids love it~ Don’t forget to ask the owner for freshly steamed jujube buns, sweet and tasty, a hidden delicacy~ ⏱️15:00-18:00 Lijia Mountain The village entrance viewing platform is where Wu Guanzhong sketched. Standing here with the kids, the cave dwellings, loess slopes, and distant mountains look like a living oil painting~ The “Qilin Courtyard” gatehouse has the best afternoon light and shadow, perfect for parent-child photos~ The abandoned cave dwellings make a great industrial-style photo backdrop. The kids had a great time exploring inside~ ⏱️19:00-20:30 Ancient Town Night View In summer, Heilong Temple lights up from 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM. The temple illuminated by lights is stunning~ Recommended is the sea buckthorn juice with roasted bread slices at “Cave Bar.” The juice is sweet and sour, refreshing, and the bread slices are crispy and delicious. Sit down with the kids for a break and enjoy the peaceful night in the ancient town~ 📅 Day 2️⃣: Architectural Aesthetics on the Loess Plateau ⏱️08:00-10:00 Xiwang Village The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall’s screen wall silhouette shot against the backlight creates very artistic photos with the kids~ The moon gate in the five-courtyard compound is very distinctive. The kids love running in and out of the gate~ The jujube forest behind the village requires a local guide. Bring the kids to pick jujubes and run around, getting close to nature~ ⏱️10:30-12:00 Yiju Temple The Song Dynasty polychrome sculptures in the Ten Thousand Buddha Cave prohibit flash photography. Quietly appreciate with the kids and feel the charm of ancient sculpture art~ The Ming Dynasty mural “Flying Apsaras” (East Side Hall) is colorful and rich in content. The kids watch attentively~ The ancient cypress grove behind the temple is a hidden photo spot on Xiaohongshu. Take photos with the kids under the cypress trees for a great atmosphere~ ⏱️12:30-13:30 Lunch Return to Qikou for “Old Zhang’s” sauced noodles. The noodles are chewy, and the broth is rich. The kids were very satisfied~ ⏱️14:00-15:00 Xiangyan Temple This temple is like an architectural museum, including buildings from the Song, Jin, Yuan, and Ming dynasties. The highlight is the black glazed tile roof. Bring the kids to observe architectural features from different dynasties and expand their knowledge~ ⏱️16:00-18:00 Anguo Temple A thousand-year-old ancient temple inherited from the Tang Dynasty stands majestically on a cliff. Bring the kids to feel the temple’s steepness and solemnity, marveling at the wisdom and perseverance of ancient people~ 💡Parent-Child Tips: Renting a car for self-driving is recommended for easier transportation in Lüliang; the Loess Plateau has large temperature differences, so bring thick jackets for the kids; bring enough water and snacks as kids will burn a lot of energy; respect local villagers’ lifestyles and avoid disturbing them; some attractions require hiking, so have the kids wear comfortable sports shoes~ The beauty and culture of Lüliang are truly captivating. Bringing the kids here lets you enjoy natural wonders and feel the depth of history. Let’s go!

Want your children to step away from screens and feel the most primitive and simple survival wisdom? Then head straight to the Yaodong (cave dwellings) clusters in Lüliang, Shanxi! This is not a tourist spot but real living settlements scattered across the Lüliang mountains. In winter, when the Loess Plateau is covered in silver, crawling into a yaodong with a heated kang bed and hanging chili peppers and corn instantly wraps you in warmth and the scent of daily life. This is a profound experience about "home" and "adapting to nature." 🛖 How to choose yaodongs suitable for family experiences: First choice: "Jiekou Yaodong" or "Brick Yaodong": Traditional earth yaodongs may have safety risks and dampness. Many farmhouses now have renovated "Jiekou Yaodong" (the cave face reinforced with bricks and stones) or newly built "brick yaodongs," which are sturdier, drier, and better lit. Confirm there are modern bathrooms and heating/kang beds: Purely rural dry toilets and heating only by kang beds might be hard for kids to adapt to. Choose yaodong inns that provide private bathrooms (at least clean flush toilets) and stable heating (kang bed + electric heater). Choose ones with spacious courtyards: Kids need space to play. A courtyard where they can bask in the sun, build small snowmen, and gaze at the mountains is essential. 🧵 Winter yaodong living experience checklist: · Learn to make a noodle dish: Learn from the landlady to roll "cat ears" noodles and roll out "youmian kaolaolao" noodles, starting from kneading the dough, experiencing the hard work behind every grain. · Nights on the kang bed: A hot kang bed covered with festive printed sheets, the whole family crowded together telling stories and watching stars (the starry sky outside the yaodong window is extremely clear) is a warm memory for life. · Morning smoke and fire atmosphere: Wake up early, watch smoke rising from the tops of each yaodong, breathe the crisp air scented with firewood, hear donkeys braying and roosters crowing, and feel the village waking up. 🚗 Core areas and itinerary for the Lüliang yaodong experience: Best experience areas: Villages around Lin County, Liulin County, and Shilou County in Lüliang City. For example, Lijiashan Village (Qikou Town) mentioned earlier is an ultimate artistic presentation of yaodong architecture. Also, villages near the Yellow River’s Qiwang in Shilou County are very charming. Suggested itinerary (2 days 1 night): Day 1: Drive from Taiyuan or Lüliang city to the selected yaodong village (such as Qikou), check into a yaodong inn in the afternoon, and participate in farmhouse activities. Day 2: Morning hiking in the village and surrounding mountains, afternoon visit nearby attractions (such as the Yellow River Gallery) before returning. Travel tips: Be sure to drive yourself, preferably an SUV. Mountain roads are winding; drive cautiously in winter. Communicate with the inn owner in advance for specific routes. 🏠 Recommended yaodong-themed accommodations (all real and relatively well-equipped): Various inns in Qikou Ancient Town: As mentioned, Qikou inns and Yellow River Hotel offer yaodong rooms, conveniently located and safe for first-timers. Huanghe Hotel in Mengmen Town, Liulin County: Not purely yaodong, but some rooms incorporate yaodong elements and ensure modern comfort. "Yellow River Family" farmhouse in Shilou County: Located in villages along the Yellow River, requires advance booking, offering the most authentic kang bed and farmhouse meal experience. 🍛 The "coarse grain, fine craft" feast inside the yaodong: Youmian series: Youmian kaolaolao, youmian yuyu, dipped in lamb sauce or tomato sauce, healthy and delicious.

While city kids play on artificial rock slides in playgrounds, I took my 5-year-old son to Lijiashan Village. Here, the entire village is a huge, real three-dimensional maze. We spent an entire afternoon on a deep adventure combining geographic observation, aesthetic perception, and physical exercise. 🗺️ Our "Ancient Village Explorer" map-making game: Base selection: Find a small shop or a prominent courtyard at the village entrance as the "base camp." Task assignment: Dad is responsible for taking photos of intersections with his phone, mom marks them simply with a pen, and the child's task is to observe and describe features ("This intersection has a crooked jujube tree," "That house has red couplets at the door"). Collaborative drawing: After the adventure, back at the guesthouse, the whole family draws a "Lijiashan Adventure Map" on white paper based on memory and photos. This process greatly trains the child's observation skills, sense of direction, and memory. 🌄 Parent-child conversations combined with nature education: "Why are the houses built this way?": Guide the child to think: backed by mountains, facing the Yellow River (good lighting, wind protection), cave dwellings (warm in winter, cool in summer), compact layout (saving farmland, defense). "Look for signs of life": On the barren loess slope in winter, search together for resilient plants (wild jujube trees, dry grass), observe corn and chili peppers hanging under eaves, and talk about where food comes from. "Listen to the quiet sounds": Sitting on a high spot in the village, turn off all electronic devices, and listen with your child: the sound of wind passing through cave dwellings, the faint flow of the Yellow River in the distance, occasional barking dogs and crowing roosters. This is the "white noise therapy" money can't buy in the city. 🚙 Nearby linked activities (suitable for 2-3 days): Day 1: Arrive at Qikou Ancient Town at noon, check in, stroll the ancient town in the afternoon, watch the Yellow River sunset, visit Heilong Temple. Day 2: Explore Lijiashan Village in the morning, drive to the "Yellow River Hundred-Mile Gallery" area in the afternoon to see the Yellow River ice formations (depending on temperature) or the natural landform of the earth pillar forest. Day 3: Visit Xiwang Village (a Chen family bloodline village), compare its layout with Lijiashan Village, then return. 🏠 Accommodation upgrade options to enhance the experience: Lvliang Qikou Mengmen Yellow River Grand Hotel: If you have higher requirements for accommodation comfort, you can choose this hotel about half an hour's drive from Qikou, with good facilities, then drive to various attractions. High-end guesthouse inside Pingyao Ancient City: Make this Yellow River ancient village trip the "wild" part of your Shanxi journey, then drive 3 hours to Pingyao to enjoy exquisite service, creating a striking contrast experience. ❄️ Special winter safety and etiquette reminders: · Clothing and gear: warm inner layers + windproof and scratch-resistant outer layers (thorns). Gloves are essential because you will often need to hold onto earthen walls or railings. · Villager etiquette: If you need to enter courtyards for visits or photos, please smile or ask quietly. Many elderly have lived here all their lives; please respect their living space. · Trash disposal: Please take all your trash with you. This pure land needs everyone's care. · Vehicle preparation: Check tire pressure and antifreeze before departure. Keep hot water and blankets in the car just in case.

Located in Xuejiawan Village, Liulin Town, Liulin County, Lüliang City, Shanxi Province, Xiangyan Temple is also known as "Pigeon Temple" due to the frequent circling of pigeons above it. The temple is built against the mountain, backed by hills, facing the Sanchuan River, surrounded by ancient pines and cypresses, creating a serene environment. According to research, Xiangyan Temple was first built during the Tang Dynasty's Zhenguan period (627-649 AD) and was one of the eight famous temples in ancient Lishi County. During the Zhenyuan period of Emperor Dezong of Tang (785-805 AD), it was bestowed the name "Xiangyan," meaning "fragrant and solemn." The temple has undergone repairs throughout history, with large-scale renovations during the Jin, Yuan, Ming, Qing dynasties, and even the Republic of China era. This has allowed us to see architectural styles from the Song, Jin, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties all within the same courtyard, a rarity among ancient buildings nationwide. Because of this, Xiangyan Temple was designated a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit in 2001. There is also a beautiful folk legend about the temple's name: it is said that the temple gate once had a sheep-fat jade pigeon that transformed into a real pigeon soaring in the sky by day and reverted to a jade pigeon guarding the temple by night. Although the jade pigeon was later lost, flocks of pigeons still linger here, hence the widespread fame of the "Pigeon Temple." 🏛️ Architectural Layout and Artistic Treasures Xiangyan Temple’s overall layout is rigorous, facing south with two courtyards arranged side by side east to west. Its main buildings are aligned along the central axis, including the Shanmen (Mountain Gate), Hall of Heavenly Kings, Mahavira Hall, and Pilu Hall. The table below summarizes some of the most representative buildings and their features: Building Name | Construction Era | Main Features and Value Mahavira Hall | Jin Dynasty | One of the oldest existing buildings in the temple. It has five bays in width, six purlins in depth, a single-eave gable roof covered with green glazed tiles. The large dougong brackets under the eaves are magnificent. Inside, the Buddha altar base features 108 Yuan Dynasty brick carvings depicting dragons, phoenixes, figures, and flowers, with smooth carving techniques, making it a rare artistic masterpiece. Pilu Hall | Built in Jin Dynasty, renovated in Yuan Dynasty | The hall uses column-moving and column-reducing techniques, creating an exceptionally spacious interior, a typical example of Yuan Dynasty wooden architecture. The roof is covered with green glazed tiles. Guanyin Hall | Yuan Dynasty | Its most notable feature is the black glazed tile roof, which is extremely rare in other temples. Seven Buddhas Hall | Ming Dynasty | Houses seven Ming Dynasty clay Buddha statues with flowing robes and ornate accessories. Although partially damaged, they remain excellent examples of Ming clay sculpture. The beams are painted with delicate ink cloud patterns and murals. In addition to the buildings listed above, the temple preserves many Ming Dynasty glazed tile pieces, especially rare are the later-added soy glaze and black glaze tiles, which are seldom seen in other temples. The brick carvings on the Buddha platform in the central hall are diverse and skillfully executed. 🌳 Visiting and Tour Tips Transportation: You can take bus routes 3, 5, or 7 in Liulin County to reach near Xiangyan Temple, making transportation convenient. Admission: Xiangyan Temple is open to the public free of charge. Ancient Trees: In the temple’s west courtyard stands an 800-year-old Chinese flowering quince tree (commonly called a papaya tree). It is tall and upright, known as a "Lüliang marvel," serving as a living witness to the temple’s long history. Be sure to look for it. Nearby Attractions: Liulin County also has another National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit—Yuxu Palace (also free to visit), which can be included in your travel plan. Xiangyan Temple is like a three-dimensional historical scroll, with every brick, every dougong bracket, and every glazed tile silently telling stories of craftsmanship and faith from the Tang to Qing dynasties. We hope this guide helps you better appreciate the unique charm of this millennium-old temple.
