Yantai in July really makes you forget about going back to work😭 I originally just wanted to relax by the sea for a couple of days, but ended up staying on Yangma Island for four days before I could leave. The northern sea is completely different from the south—clean, clear, and not humid. The sea breeze is even a bit cool, which is exactly how summer should feel! 🏡 About the stay The guesthouse is located mid-way along the island’s coastal road near the cliffs. It’s about a 10-minute walk east from Tianma Square. It’s not on a noisy commercial street, and at night it’s so quiet you can only hear the waves. The room has a 270-degree curved floor-to-ceiling window facing the sea. You can watch the sunrise from bed without setting an alarm—the sun pops up over the horizon around 4:50 AM🌅. There’s nothing blocking the view straight ahead, and the horizon stretches endlessly. The balcony has a rattan sofa set and a small tea table. It takes about half an hour to drive from the city to Kumbum Monastery, and parking is limited, so go early. 5️⃣ Longnan City|Gansu Longnan was the biggest surprise of my trip. It's in Gansu, but it's nothing like the Loess Plateau. The entire city is surrounded by mountains, the air is so humid you could wring water out of it, and the average temperature in summer is over 20 degrees Celsius; you even need a light blanket at night. My first stop was Tianchi Lake in Wenxian County. The winding mountain road took over an hour, but the moment I reached the summit, the lake looked like a piece of green jade embedded in the mountains. There weren't many people, and you could walk the entire loop along the boardwalk, which took about two hours. The scenery changed every few steps. 📍 There's a small platform by Tianchi Lake. After 3 pm, the sunlight shines obliquely, turning the lake a deep blue. That spot is almost always taken. The next day, I went to Guange Valley. This place is wilder than Tianchi, with more waterfalls. It's not tiring to walk there, but the whole hike takes four to five hours. I recommend wearing non-slip shoes, as some parts of the boardwalk are slippery. 🍜 At the entrance to the valley, there are vendors selling potato dumplings, a sticky dish served with pickled cabbage soup. Locals eat it for lunch. I tried a bowl; the taste was quite unique. ⚠️ Longnan has many mountain roads, so avoid driving at night if you're driving, as the roads are winding and fog is common at night. 6️⃣ Qiqihar City | Heilongjiang Summer in Qiqihar doesn't last more than three days; most of the time it's sunny with temperatures in the 20s Celsius, and the breeze is quite cool. I came here for one purpose only—to see the red-crowned cranes released at the Zhalong Ecological Tourism Area. There are two shows a day, at 11:00 AM and 2:30 PM. Don't miss them; I missed the first one and waited an hour for nothing. ⏰ The release lasts about ten minutes. When the flock of cranes flies out from behind the hill, everyone gasps in amazement. After watching, don't rush off. Walk two kilometers into the reed beds; there are fewer people there, and you can see wild cranes foraging in the shallows. 🍜 Just pick any barbecue restaurant in the city center; Qiqihar's barbecue is truly delicious. They add onions and cilantro when marinating the meat, making it tender and fragrant after grilling. You can eat until you're stuffed for about 50 yuan per person. ⚠️ Be aware of mosquitoes in tourist areas; wear long pants and bring mosquito repellent. Don't ask me how I know. 7️⃣ Zhoushan City | Zhejiang In Zhoushan's summer, the sea breeze is incredibly refreshing. Putuoshan is a must-see, but don't expect to see everything in one day. I recommend staying overnight. Accommodation on the island isn't cheap, but at 6 am, Putuoshan is almost deserted. The smell of incense mingles with the sea breeze, and a walk along the beach is a peaceful experience—far better than the daytime crowds. Transportation on the island relies on buses, which are cheap, but the queues are long. I suggest a combination of walking and buses. The next day, hop on an island to Gouqi Island. The boat trip takes two hours; if you get seasick, take seasickness medication beforehand. The sea around Gouqi Island is a beautiful turquoise, completely different from the muddy waters of Putuoshan. The most worthwhile place to visit on the island is Dawang Beach; the sand is fine and comfortable to walk on barefoot. 🍜 Seafood noodles on the island cost 30 yuan a bowl, and the portions are incredibly generous—mountains of razor clams, shrimp, and clams. I didn't go to the Shengsi Islands, but I heard they're wilder than Gouqi Island, though there are fewer ferry services. Those with ample time might consider it. ⚠️ Island weather is unpredictable; check wind speeds before you go. Boats will be suspended if the wind force is above level 7. 8️⃣ Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture|Hunan Summer in Xiangxi is truly hot, but the ancient town of Fenghuang is cool at night. A river breeze dissipates much of the heat. I arrived in Fenghuang in the afternoon, and instead of going into the ancient town, I stayed at a guesthouse on the opposite bank. After dropping off my luggage, I took a walk along the Tuojiang River. At 6 PM, all the red lanterns in the ancient town lit up, their reflections in the water making it ten times more beautiful than during the day. The next morning, we went to Dehang Grand Canyon, a 40-minute drive. The temperature inside the canyon was several degrees lower than outside, and the spray from the waterfall was refreshingly cool. There's a hiking trail in the scenic area, taking two hours to complete, offering views of Miao villages and terraced fields; even those with average stamina can finish it. Shibadong and Aizhai are on a different route. The Aizhai Bridge is magnificent, but don't just take photos on the bridge itself. Go down to the viewing platform at the bottom and look up at the steel cables—the sense of awe is something photos can't capture. 🍜 For blood duck in the ancient town, find a small restaurant in a back alley; it's half the price of the larger riverside restaurants, and the taste is authentic. ⚠️ Parking in Fenghuang is extremely difficult. It's recommended to park in a parking lot outside the town and walk into the town.
