On the way from Tengchong to Baoshan, we visited the Songshan Anti-Japanese War Site and Huitong Bridge in Longling. About half an hour after leaving Tengchong, at the Longjiang Bridge rest area on the Baoteng Expressway, you can view the Longjiang Bridge spanning the Longjiang Grand Canyon. The viewing platform has a check-in spot, which is very user-friendly. Many people are unaware of the Songshan Anti-Japanese War, but the TV series "My Regiment Commander, My Regiment" has drawn many viewers' attention to this piece of history. I visited here during my 2018 self-driving tour in Yunnan (2018 Yunnan self-driving tour notes available), and this time I brought companions to pay respects. The Songshan scenic area now attracts more visitors, and the infrastructure has been enhanced. The newly built visitor center and parking lot are nearly completed. In the future, you won’t be able to drive directly up; scenic area shuttle buses will be mandatory, though it’s unclear if there will be a fee. After all, many red education bases offer free entry but charge for shuttle buses, a model increasingly replicated in recent years. During the 2018 Yunnan self-driving tour, the main focus was the Burma Road. At that time, I didn’t know much and was unaware that Huitong Bridge is right at the foot of Songshan. In fact, if you travel another 10 kilometers before ascending the mountain along the Nujiang River, you can see Huitong Bridge, which was quite a regret. This time, when descending to Huitong Bridge following navigation, I found it was not the same route used in 2018 to ascend the mountain (the route on the map might be Z001). That route is the original Burma Road surface, a bumpy dirt and gravel road. This time, we traveled on paved roads, though some village roads were narrow but very scenic. The mountains, terraced fields, orchards, crops, valleys, and the Nujiang River truly make a picturesque landscape. There is a parking space right by the roadside at Huitong Bridge. Note the place name here: “Lamong Town, Hongsong Section, Huitong Bridge Site.” If you navigate directly to “Huitong Bridge,” it shows the opposite side of the river, which is inaccessible. The navigation might even point to the upper reaches of the Nujiang River hundreds of kilometers away. Huitong Bridge bore the heavy transport burden of the Burma Road. Its destruction halted the Japanese army’s advance into Yunnan, buying time and space for the war effort. Rebuilding it was part of the counterattack during the war. Today, it stands like a monument spanning the Nujiang River, reminding us not to forget history. Though the mountains and waters are distant, they are still our homeland. There is no direct expressway from Huitong Bridge to Baoshan. County Road M33 runs through the Nujiang Gorge and Gaoligong Mountains. After more than an hour, in Shuichang Township, Shidian County, you will pass the “Burma Road 707 Memorial.” You can stop and check in there before getting back on the expressway to Baoshan. Baoshan City is a blend of old and new, with few ancient relics remaining. We visited the Baoshan Museum and then checked in at Taibaoshan Forest Park, where there is a monument to the fallen anti-Japanese soldiers of western Yunnan. Afterwards, we headed to Qinglong Ancient Street in the northern suburbs of Baoshan. Baoshan’s history is closely tied to its location on the ancient western Yunnan route. Whether it was the ancient “Shu-Shendu Road,” the later “Tea Horse Road,” or the “Burma Road,” Baoshan has always been an important node and post station. Qinglong Street is the best-preserved area reflecting the ancient road’s style in Baoshan. Now a tourist commercial pedestrian street, it attracts many visitors. The street offers common tourist goods as well as Yunnan and Baoshan specialties. Yunzi Go stones originate from Baoshan, well known among Go enthusiasts. Today, we're talking about a hidden hot spring secret nestled in the folds of the Longling Mountains in Baoshan—almost swallowed by the primeval forest—Banglazhang Ecological Hot Spring Hotel. Here, there is no city noise, only air bursting with negative oxygen ions and the legendary "healing" miraculous water. 🌲 Ecology: Sleep in the forest and have a green dream Open the window, and instead of traffic, you see drifting mountain mist; close your eyes, and instead of noise, you hear insects chirping and birds singing. The negative oxygen ion content here reaches over 10,000/cm³, making every breath feel like a spa treatment for your lungs. Waking up to the call of kingfishers in the morning and soaking in the pool watching the sunset dye the distant mountains red in the evening—this kind of healing power is something the city cannot offer. ♨️ Hot Springs: The "divine soup" is not called that for nothing, but there are some drawbacks. Banglazhang's hot springs are famously called "divine soup and miraculous water," especially the radon-fluoride springs, which are said to be remarkably effective in improving cardiovascular health, regulating female endocrine systems, and follicle development. There are also various compound mineral springs like carbonated and sulfur springs that relieve gout and improve skin. Sounds like you want to fly there immediately, right? But! The real experience is: The hotel is built along the mountain with a total of 55 pools, which are not densely packed but rather spread out. Perhaps because it was not a holiday or peak travel time when we visited, many pools were not open. However, this does not affect the enjoyment of soaking in the springs. So we strongly recommend booking accommodation directly! Staying includes hot spring tickets, and the forest hot spring rooms come with private balcony hot springs—lying down to soak while watching the mountain view is the right way to enjoy it. 🏠 Accommodation: Green views from the window, private hot springs at your doorstep The rooms are large, with bathtubs and huge terraces. Falling asleep to the sound of insects at night—that's what a vacation should feel like. 🍜 Dining: Taste of Yunnan, but don’t expect delivery When in Longling, Huangshan goat is a must-try! · Huangshan Goat Hot Pot: A local unique breed, said to be acceptable even for those sensitive to gamey flavors. Rich beef broth cooks the soft and chewy rice noodles, paired with the owner's secret dipping sauce—simply irresistible. · Dendrobium Health Banquet: Local specialty medicinal herbs, warm and comforting. · Chicken Mushroom Stew: The king of mushrooms paired with free-range chicken, so fresh it’ll make your eyebrows fall off. ⚠️ Important reminder: There are no delivery services or shops within several miles of the hotel! Or take a bus 🚗 to Longling county town and then a taxi. · Airplane: Arrive at Mangshi Airport, then a 30-minute ride-hailing car to the destination. (Personally, self-driving is the most convenient.) Since you're here, you can also visit the Longling Anti-Japanese War Memorial and Songshan Battlefield Ruins to feel history, or stroll around Huangcaoba Wetland and Huanglong Jade Museum to experience the relaxed vibe of the small town. Longshan Lake Park in the city center is free, scenic, and has shared electric scooters, making it very convenient to explore. 💡 Summary Banglazhang is a place with very clear pros and cons.
