The path was so narrow that only a horse could pass through; on the left was a damp stone wall, and on the right was the Nujiang River. The sound of the river was louder than anything else, but strangely, after listening for a while, it felt peaceful. In the fields halfway up the mountain, farmers were already bent over planting rice seedlings, the paddies reflecting the snow that hadn’t yet melted, shining brightly. At a landslide site, I squatted down to look at the wild grass sprouting from the cracks in the rocks, so tender it was almost transparent. Locals say that the plants in Nujiang are stubborn; neither the rocks nor the snow can suppress them.
