He did not bring back the Tokijikan fruit, but an orange tree. Tanjima Morimi was too sad and dedicated the orange tree to the queen before his death. His tomb is built in the pond of Emperor Suinin's mausoleum. Because it looks like a floating island, it is called Nakajima Shrine. The Nakajima Shrine in Matsuyama is a branch of the Nakajima Shrine in Toyooka, Hyogo. Tanjima Morimi is regarded as the god of Japanese confectionery and citrus. As it was nearing dusk, the temple was quiet with few visitors. After offering some coins, I stepped into this mysterious cave, only to discover an entirely different world inside. Dim lights illuminated the pathway, lined with small Jizo statues and various signs describing Buddhist teachings and Zen philosophy. Walking through the cave alone, with no other visitors, I initially felt a mix of fear and curiosity. But as I ventured further, it became a journey of self-reflection. Emerging from the cave, I saw a statue of Kobo Daishi atop the rock formation. Suddenly, I felt a sense of understanding—perhaps, like the pilgrims of the Shikoku Pilgrimage, the process of visiting the eighty-eight sacred sites is a solitary quest for inner peace. Later, I researched Japanese sources and learned that this might be a site for Vajrayana practices, where observation, contemplation, and eventual enlightenment take place. Continuing along the path from the cave entrance, I came across a mysterious structure—a golden onion-shaped pagoda guarded by two stone lions. Google Maps revealed that this place is called "Fudoki Hill - Mandala," which is part of Ishite-ji Temple but with a completely different style. A pair of hands holding marbles, with many scattered around, created a surreal atmosphere reminiscent of the scene in Spirited Away where one crosses a tunnel into another world. Inside the main hall, on the right, there is a wooden statue of an ascetic Buddha, depicting the state of the Buddha during his practice before enlightenment. Nearby are 500 Rakan statues with diverse expressions—joyful, wrathful, compassionate, and serene—forming a mysterious and surreal space. This hot spring resort hotel, 'Okudogo Ichiyu no Mori,' has been in operation since the Showa era. Although it has a bit of an old-fashioned feel, it is very well-maintained, elegant, and high-class, with a noble retro atmosphere. The Japanese hot spring ambiance is perfectly created, especially since it is located in the natural mountain forest, far from the bustling crowds, making the entire environment superb. The 28-square-meter guest rooms offer a choice of twin beds or Japanese-style futons. The decor leans towards a classic Japanese old-school style, and the view from the window is full of greenery, making it very relaxing. A traditional Japanese hot spring hotel experience includes enjoying breakfast and dinner. The original price for a stay with two meals is about 8,000 New Taiwan Dollars, but we were lucky to book it for 5,000 NT, averaging less than 2,500 NT per person, which is quite a bargain. To be honest, the public spaces are more beautiful, but the rooms are still comfortable. Prices range from 3000 to 5000 New Taiwan Dollars, with an additional 500 NT for breakfast. The breakfast at the hot spring hotel is sumptuous, enjoyed in a European-style restaurant with a buffet. It's a rare leisurely experience. The hotel's large bath and sauna are also quite good, with the hot spring water being very smooth. Dogo Onsen truly lives up to its reputation.

From Dogo Onsen in Matsuyama City, if you walk left along the road, you will come across a historical site that was once the residence of the Kono clan during the Heian period, known as Yuzuki Castle. I had so much fun in Matsuyama I'll give you some tips on renting a bike💛 🚲Matsuyama is a very small city so it's great to ride a bike around 🚋Trams are convenient, but they're too expensive to get around (2,300 yen per person one way if you pay in cash (same for all stops) So I prepared it!! Flying with EVA Air to Dogo Onsen in Matsuyama, Shikoku, I enjoyed the benefits of free airport shuttle service and hot spring vouchers, allowing me to fully immerse myself in the atmosphere reminiscent of Spirited Away. In this quaint hot spring town, every photo is picturesque, especially on sunny days when each shot looks like a postcard. People here are either strolling around in yukatas or taking traditional wedding photos, and tourists riding rickshaws can be seen everywhere. Couples enjoying foot baths after a long walk add to the joyful atmosphere. The hot spring water here is very clean and has no strong odor. After soaking, I felt extremely comfortable and wished I could stay a few more days.
