Holiday is coming, it's the perfect time to go out and relax with family and friends! 🥳 In the next few posts, I will share a collection of short trips around Melbourne, divided into Western, Northern, and Eastern editions. All the places are personally visited by us, and we have marked all the small spots for you~ You will definitely not be bored along the way! These routes can be turned into a one-day trip (compact, requires an early start) or a two-day one-night or even three-day two-night trip (leisurely pace, or suitable for taking elders out) This post is the Western edition, with two routes to choose from: seaside 🌊 or forest 🌳 tours 🌊 Route 1 - Melbourne - Great Ocean Road - Warrnambool Please see images 2 and 3 for the detailed route (some scenic photos in images 4 and 5) Depart from Melbourne, you can choose to stop at Geelong either on the way there or back. We recommend walking from The Pier Geelong to Geelong Waterfront to enjoy the beautiful blend of city and seaside views. There is a chocolate factory 🍫 between Geelong and the Great Ocean Road, where you can stop and rest ♨️ All the Great Ocean Road attractions are organized here, and you can also decide to add more stops by watching road signs while driving. But we highly recommend the spots after the Twelve Apostles, as there are fewer people and they are very unique! 🍽️ For restaurants, we only ate at Apollo Bay Seafood Cafe. If you want to try others, Apollo Bay has many other restaurants~ Warrnambool’s must-visit is Flagstaff Hill; entry to the museum is free and there are excellent photo spots. The village requires an entrance fee! The Botanic Garden has a tree full of bats 🦇, otherwise it’s quite standard. For the return trip, you can choose the inland route which is shorter but basically has no special stops worth visiting. 🌳 Route 2 - Melbourne - Grampians Please see image 6 for the detailed route (some scenic photos in image 7) Depart from Melbourne first to Ballarat; if you want to try gold panning, you can visit Sovereign Hill. A wonderful petting zoo. Reservations are required. I visited in 2023 and 2025, and the young staff were on hand to explain the animals to me. You can hold baby wombats and wallabies, feed emus, goats, and chickens, and even interact with snakes and other reptiles. It's a small zoo, so you don't have to walk around much, and it's fun for everyone from toddlers to seniors. The tour takes 90 minutes, and is free for children under 2, A$23 for children, A$39.55 for adults, and A$31.64 for seniors (as of 2025).

Roadtrip Melbourne to Adelaide. The Great Ocean Road is the most worthwhile road trip in Australia. Located southwest of Melbourne, the Great Ocean Road stretches from Geelong, Lorne, Apollo Bay, and Port Campbell to Warrnambool, with a total length of nearly 300 km. Driving along the Great Ocean Road is a series of amazing journeys, with breathtaking views every kilometer. No two rock pillars standing in the sea are the same. The sunset and flying birds are a sight that many people may never see in their lifetime. The magnificent waves and sheer cliffs along the Great Ocean Road are the work of God, but to 19th-century sailors and immigrants, they were like iron-faced warriors defending Victoria, resolutely preventing hopeful ships from approaching.

Metung is a small town located in eastern Victoria, nestled in the beautiful Gippsland Lakes region. It is situated at the confluence of lakes and rivers, surrounded by lush forests and tranquil waters. Olinda is a small town located about 40 km from Melbourne's CBD, in the Dandenong Ranges. It is adjacent to Sassafras, and the two towns are often visited together, as they are only 3 km apart and can be reached in just a few minutes by car. Olinda is similar to Sassafras, but has a larger population of 1,773 people as of 2021. Despite this, the population density is only 305 people per square kilometer, giving each person plenty of space to enjoy. The town center of Olinda has some small shops and eateries. Nearby is the National Rhododendron Garden, which is at its most beautiful in April and May, and September and October, when the autumn leaves are a vibrant red and yellow, and the spring flowers are in full bloom. Further down the road from the Rhododendron Garden is the Olinda Tea House, a garden-style restaurant. While the food and afternoon tea are not particularly noteworthy, the environment and scenery are quite pleasant. Continuing down the road for a few kilometers, you will see a sign for Pirianda Garden on the right. Turn in and follow the dirt road to the parking lot. The autumn colors in this garden are even more stunning than those in the Rhododendron Garden, with beautiful red and yellow leaves. Returning to the town center of Olinda, turn right and follow the main road for a few kilometers to reach the William Ricketts Sanctuary. This small garden is lush with plants and features many sculptures, all in a similar style, hidden among the trees and bushes. The dappled light and shadows give the garden a slightly eerie and somber atmosphere. Dunkeld is a small town located in the southeastern state of Victoria, Australia. It is situated at the southern end of the Grampians/Gariwerd mountain range and is an ideal base for exploring the Grampians. The town offers beautiful trails and mountain views, perfect for hiking or climbing Mount Sturgeon. Dunkeld is also known for its delicious food, with the Royal Mail Hotel and Wickens Restaurant being highly recommended. Warrnambool is a coastal town with a rich history and stunning coastline. It is a great destination for families, with opportunities to see whales and penguins. Highlights include Lake Pertobe and the Thunder Point Coastal Reserve, and the nearby Great Ocean Road and Twelve Apostles. Ballarat is the second oldest city in Victoria and has a rich gold rush history. Sovereign Hill is a must-visit historical attraction, and the town's 19th-century architecture and gold museum are also worth exploring. Halls Gap is the gateway to the Grampians National Park and is perfect for nature lovers. The area offers waterfalls, lookouts, and numerous hiking trails. The Halls Gap Zoo and local wineries are also popular attractions. Bendigo was once the center of the gold rush and is known for its historic buildings and gold museum. Visitors can explore the historic walking trails, as well as the art gallery and botanical gardens.
