Akiyoshido Cave Mid-May I used to go there often when I was a student, but it's been a while since my last visit. It's one of the largest limestone caves in Yamaguchi Prefecture. It's a very large cave, and the round trip takes about an hour. The temperature inside the cave is around 17℃, so it's cool even in summer. There are many sights to see, such as the Hyakumaiwa rock formation. There seems to be an elevator for getting around. The adventure course is not free, but it looks like children would enjoy it too. How about making it a summer memory? 🗾 3506-2 Akiyoshi, Akiyoshi-cho, Mine City, Yamaguchi Prefecture 📍 Akiyoshido Cave ⏰ 8:30 to 16:30 🗓 No regular closing days

"Akiyoshi Inarigu" ⁡ Akiyoshi, Akiyoshi-cho, Mine City, Yamaguchi Prefecture ⁡ Akiyoshido Cave is a famous tourist destination in Yamaguchi. Located just a 15-minute walk from there is this shrine. ⛩ Although it isn't widely known to the public, it's said to be a hidden spiritual power spot for those in the know. ⁡ The stone steps are densely covered in moss. Walking up them feels soft and cushiony, a clear sign that they aren't trodden on by many. ⁡ Passing under the rusted torii gate and climbing the stairs, you'll find the main worship hall. The hall itself was beautifully kept. They also offered goshuin (shrine stamps), and the omikuji (fortune-telling) box was incredibly antique. ⁡ It was incredibly peaceful, with only the singing of birds echoing around. ⁡ It’s definitely a great place to stop by when you visit Akiyoshido Cave. ⁡ ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈𖠚ᐝ𖠿𖠋𖧧┈ 【Akiyoshi Inarigu】 ⁡ ■ 3293-2 Akiyoshi, Akiyoshi-cho, Mine City, Yamaguchi Prefecture Closed: None Parking: Available ༶ஐ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ⁡ ⁡ ⁡ ⁡ ⁡ ⁡

#SeptemberDestinations2025 Akiyoshido Cave, located in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan, is a limestone cave formed by millions of years of dissolution. It's Japan's largest and most spectacular stalactite cave, boasting what are considered the world's largest "travertine terraces," also known as "Thousand-Meter Plates" or "Hundred-Meter Plates." On weekdays, the cave isn't very popular. On the day my sons and I visited, there were fewer than five groups of visitors. Public transportation isn't easily accessible, so it's best to drive. We took the bus from Yuda Onsen. You can also take the bus from JR Shin-Yamaguchi Station, which takes about 45-60 minutes. Be aware that buses are infrequent! After arriving at the bus stop, signs will be displayed to walk to Akiyoshido Cave. You'll first pass through a small forest filled with phytoncides. Once you reach the ticket office, you'll gradually notice the increasing humidity. Soon, you'll see the cave entrance and a pool of water. The water in the pool is an underground stream (an underground river), and it's this flow that creates the wonders of Akiyoshido Cave. Be sure to stop and take a photo here; this scene is a well-known tourist attraction! Personally, I prefer the view I get when I look back after entering the cave. Look! (Cover photo) Light shines in from outside, and doesn't that bright spot resemble Taiwan Island?! Entering the cave, the pitch-black space is shrouded in mist, with occasional cool breezes taking away the stuffiness. It's said that Akiyoshido Cave is warm in winter and cool in summer, with a constant temperature of 17°C year-round. There's little artificial lighting inside, and if there is, it's only white. With few visitors, it's a peaceful place to admire this ingenious work of nature. The trail is only about one kilometer long, but the entire walk takes two hours. Because of the dense concentration of landscapes within the cave, you should include time to stop and admire and take photos! We walked to the bottom of the trail, took the elevator to the ground level, and then followed the signs to Akiyoshidai Quasi-National Park. Akiyoshido Cave was an underground cave, while Akiyoshidai is now an above-ground limestone formation. I think Akiyoshido Cave is more impressive! But since we're here, we might as well stop by Akiyoshidai! Because of this, I almost missed the last bus back to Shin-Yamaguchi Station!

#Travelwithme Hello! It's Sora. This time, I went to Akiyoshidai, one of the largest karst plateaus in Japan, which spreads across the central and eastern part of Mine City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, so I'd like to share the charms of Akiyoshidai with you! First of all, as you can see in the second photo, there are many bumpy rocks on the vast grassland, which gives you a mysterious feeling like you're in another world. You can really feel that you are away from your everyday life and in contact with nature. From the fourth photo onwards, you can feel the greatness of nature in the cave. Even in the summer, the cave is very cool, so it's perfect for summer sightseeing! Inside the cave, an automatic announcement is made to explain the cave. Therefore, even if you don't know much about caves, you can understand it well. When you leave the cave, you can see the spectacular view shown in the first photo. If you go to Yamaguchi, you can't miss this place!! #cave #yamaguchi #yamaguchitourism #yamaguchitrip #yamaguchiprefecture #nature #spectacularview

Akiyoshidai Safari Land This is an area where you can buy your own food separately from the feeding bus and get up close and personal with the animals There was a baby kangaroo there and I was able to see it in its pouch🦘💕 Its fur is fluffy and friendly♩ Feeding the famous white tigers is very popular and there are only a limited number of them, so if you definitely want to experience it, you should plan your time accordingly🐯 There is also a kids' area where children can interact with them safely. There are guinea pigs and rabbits😊 #Yamaguchi #AkiyoshidaiSafariLand #Zoo #tripmemory2022

A restaurant in Akiyoshidai Safari Land If you sit by the window, you can see the red pandas☺️💕 You can also go around the outside of the restaurant to see them! I ordered the recommended roast beef bowl and the famous Yamaguchi kawara soba😋✨ I never thought I'd be able to eat kawara soba at a restaurant in a zoo...!! After the meal, you can look at souvenirs or take a leisurely stroll or play in the amusement park or zoo☺️ #tripmemory2022 #Yamaguchi #AkiyoshidaiSafariLand #Zoo #Restaurant

. A place I definitely wanted to stop by in Yamaguchi Prefecture. I went to Akiyoshidai and Akiyoshido 🌿 . As one of the largest karst plateaus in Japan, the land is so vast as far as the eye can see! A place that makes you want to stop the car and take a deep breath 😊☀︎ . . After enjoying Akiyoshidai, we went to Akiyoshido. It was my first time to see such a huge limestone cave! . There was also an adventure course where you could climb the limestone cave in an athletic way. It was more thrilling and scary than I thought 😂 . The limestone cave is large, so it took about an hour and a half to go there and back? I was able to get rid of my lack of exercise 🚶‍♀️lol #photogenicspot

Chose the 1-day tour of Kitakyushu and Yamaguchi based on Trip.com's recommendation, and it truly became a memorable experience. Our tour guide, Ella, was exceptionally kind and helpful throughout the trip, making sure everyone felt comfortable and well-informed. The journey itself felt like an adventure into places we had not seen before. Traveling by bus was a highlight in itself, thanks to a skilled driver who made the ride both smooth and safe. The bus offered plenty of comfort, allowing us to relax and enjoy the scenic route. The itinerary was wonderfully balanced—visiting the Motonosumi Shrine gave us a glimpse of spiritual Japanese culture, exploring the depths of Akiyoshido Cave was awe-inspiring, and the panoramic view of Tsunoshima Bridge was breathtaking. For those considering this trip, I’d recommend wearing comfortable shoes for the cave exploration and bringing a camera to capture the stunning vistas. This tour was a great way to see the lesser-known gems of Kitakyushu and Yamaguchi, all arranged seamlessly by Trip.com. If you seek a mix of culture, nature, and reliable service, this excursion makes for an unforgettable experience.

If you only have one long vacation and want to see the Seto Inland Sea, the mountains of the Sea of Japan, and centuries-old towns all at once, this 7-day Sanyo-San'in Area Pass is perfect. It connects Shin-Osaka to Hakata in one line, covering five prefectures in between: Okayama, Hiroshima, Yamaguchi, Tottori, and Shimane. Visit in autumn or winter, and you'll hit the trifecta of fall foliage, snow crab, and hot springs—7 days is just right. Let's clarify the pass details: You can use reserved seats on the Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Hakata, and book limited express trains like the Haruka and Yakumo. You can freely board JR West local, rapid, and special rapid trains, and the pass also includes the Miyajima Ferry and Chugoku JR Bus routes. It's convenient if you land at Kansai International Airport, as the Haruka takes you straight into the city, and you can start using the pass that same day. Note that it does not cover the Tokaido Shinkansen or Kyushu Shinkansen, so don't try to use it to travel to Tokyo or Kagoshima. It is only sold to travelers with foreign passports entering on a "Temporary Visitor" status; bring your passport when exchanging the voucher. It's best to book reserved seats in advance, as trains can get very crowded during the autumn foliage season and on weekends. Here's a suggested itinerary: Day 1: Depart from Osaka or Kyoto, take the Haruka and then the Shinkansen to Okayama, and spend the afternoon exploring Korakuen Garden and Okayama Castle. Day 2: Visit the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter—white-walled buildings, canals, and Jeans Street—then head to Hiroshima in the evening. Day 3: Spend the whole day on Miyajima. See the Itsukushima Shrine torii gate floating on the water at high tide, or walk right up to it at low tide. Momijidani Park is usually at its peak red in mid-to-late November. Day 4: Head to Yamaguchi for the Kintai Bridge and Hagi Castle Town; the white walls and summer oranges are very photogenic in autumn. Day 5: Cross over to the San'in region for the Adachi Museum of Art's gardens, Matsue Castle, and the sunset at Lake Shinji. Day 6: Visit Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine, then head to Yuushien Garden or Tamatsukuri Onsen in the afternoon. Day 7: Finish up at the Tottori Sand Dunes, then return to Okayama to transfer to the Shinkansen. Here are the must-visit spots, listed in order: Itsukushima Shrine's Great Torii Gate on Miyajima, Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter, Kintai Bridge, Hagi Castle Town, Adachi Museum of Art, Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine, and the Tottori Sand Dunes. If you want to add another stop, the Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine and Akiyoshido Cave are both worth half a day. The former is a historic mine site, and the latter is a limestone cave—perfect even on a rainy day. There's one more reason to adjust your itinerary for the San'in region in autumn and winter: snow crab. The season opens in early November, and you can find it at markets in Tottori, Matsue, and Sakaiminato. The season lasts until the following spring. It's also the best time for hot springs—Tamatsukuri, Kaike, and Yubara. Soaking in an onsen at night and then enjoying a crab meal is better than any travel guide. It does snow in the mountains, so allow extra time for potential delays around Mount Daisen and the Iwami Ginzan area. A few quick tips: The 7-day pass is calculated by consecutive calendar days, not 24-hour periods; it activates the first day you use it. Try to book all your Shinkansen reserved seats at once; go to the ticket window for last-minute changes. You'll need to pay a separate ¥100 visitor tax to board the ferry to Miyajima. Train frequency in the San'in section is lower than in the Sanyo section, so check the timetable in advance and don't overpack your schedule. The point of a rail pass isn't just to save money—it's to give you the freedom to hop off the train whenever you want. If you see a small seaside station or smell crab miso soup, just get off. That's the best way to experience the Sanyo-San'in region. Adults: CNY 960, valid for 7 consecutive days. For details, please refer to the official "JR-WEST" mini-program. Actual prices may fluctuate based on exchange rates and booking channels.

Mine would be Organic Maps. I love the idea of having maps downloaded before a trip, so I can explore even when I don’t have mobile data or a reliable internet connection. It’s especially handy when wandering through unfamiliar streets, exploring smaller towns, or traveling somewhere where roaming is expensive. I can plan ahead and feel less dependent on finding Wi-Fi every time I need directions. My tip: download the map for your destination before you leave, and don’t forget that offline maps won’t give you every feature of an online navigation app. What’s your must-have travel app — and what do you use it for? I’m always looking for useful recommendations! #TravelApps #OrganicMaps #TravelHacks #TravelTips #hotdiscussions

The hotel staff were incredibly kind. They helped us out when we were in a bind because convenience stores closed early and weren't easily accessible.

Inside the cave. Located 100 meters beneath Akiyoshidai Quasi-National Park, Akiyoshido is one of Japan's premier limestone caves, with a total length exceeding 11.2 kilometers. The temperature inside stays around 17°C (63°F) year-round, making it warm in winter and cool in summer—a perfect destination for any season. The tourist route inside the cave spans about 1 kilometer and features three points of entry: the Kurotani Entrance, the Elevator Entrance, and the Front Entrance. All three are open to visitors. If you're concerned about steep climbs, entering via the Kurotani Entrance is recommended. If you want to head directly to the Akiyoshidai plateau mid-tour, you can simply take the elevator exit. The interior of Akiyoshido is filled with limestone formations in extraordinary shapes, showcasing the breathtaking craftsmanship of nature. Highlights include the "Golden Column," which stands 15 meters tall and 4 meters wide, and the "Hundred Plates" (Hyakumenzara), which resemble a vast expanse of terraced rice fields. Interestingly, you can even catch a glimpse of Taiwan here! Looking out toward the Front Entrance from inside, the reflection of the opening on the river surface creates a silhouette that strikingly resembles the shape of Taiwan—a truly remarkable sight. Mine City has maintained a friendly relationship with Taiwan for about 10 years, and you'll find a commemorative "Queen's Head" stone from Taiwan's Yehliu Geopark at the entrance of the Akiyoshido shopping street. In winter, you might even see the Queen's Head covered in snow. Whether you're looking for a cool summer retreat or want to witness the awe-inspiring power of nature, this is a must-visit spot if you are in Yamaguchi! ⛰️✨

#bucketlistdestinations Akiyoshidai (秋吉台), Yamaguchi: from Shin-Yamaguchi Station, bus to Akiyoshido Cave (¥1,500 round trip). The plateau above the cave is karst grassland with moss-filled dolines (sinkholes); the 2 km forest edge trail from the cave to the plateau lookout is free. Entry to Akiyoshido Cave itself ¥1,200, card ok. I walked the mossy karst at 5 pm—cows grazing, sinkholes steaming slightly. Mistake: I stepped into a doline edge (moss hides the lip), sank to my knee. Stay on the mown path. A cattle herder offered hot coffee from a flask, “the moss tells you where the ground lies.” Best season: June tsuyu, or Nov fog. No bins on the plateau. Is karst “forest” if the trees are scattered and the moss is the real canopy?
