Minfeng travel guide and discussion

Where to go: Dunhuang Mingsha Mountain, Ningxia Shapotou, Inner Mongolia Badain Jaran Desert, Kubuqi Desert, Ejina Desert, Xinjiang Taklamakan Desert, Qinghai Lenghu Desert. How to get there: Dunhuang has an airport; Shapotou is near Zhongwei; Badain Jaran requires a chartered car to Alxa Right Banner; Kubuqi is by car from Baotou; Ejina is by flight to Jiayuguan and then transfer; Taklamakan Desert is via Luntai or Minfeng; Lenghu is by car from Golmud. What to do: Camel riding, sandboarding, off-road dune bashing, bonfire parties, stargazing photography, hiking in the poplar forest. Where to stay: Desert campsites, herder's yurts, county town hotels. What to eat: Dunhuang donkey meat noodles, Ningxia hand-pulled mutton, Inner Mongolian milk tea. Remember: Large temperature difference between day and night; sun protection and sand protection; hydration and salt replenishment. The desert is not difficult; the difficulty lies in respecting it. #travelersvoice #chinatravelcircle

From the Singing Sand Dunes of Dunhuang to the Populus euphratica forests of Ejina, I've traversed ten deserts. The Bilutu Sand Dunes in Badain Jaran are the world's highest sand dunes, golden like knife edges at sunrise. The Taklamakan Desert crossing, the desert highway from Luntai to Minfeng, is a tapestry of Populus euphratica and sand dunes. At Tengger Desert's Shapotou, the Yellow River embraces the desert. The Kubuqi Singing Sand Dunes seem to sing. The Urho Ghost City, wind-sculpted ruins. The Qarhan Salt Lake, a thousand-foot salt bridge across the Gobi Desert. The Lenghu Mars Camp, desolate as an alien planet. Gurbantunggut, China's only desert where snow falls in winter. Each desert has its own character. Don't just check off your list; try staying overnight, watching the sunset sink into the sand ridges, and the Milky Way rise overhead. That's the desert's answer to you. #travelersvoice #chinatravelcircle

First-time tourists to Xinjiang often share a common dilemma: stepping into any bazaar, one is overwhelmed by the sheer variety of dried fruits, handicrafts, and dairy products, making it difficult to know where to begin. Even worse, the prices at specialty shops in tourist areas are often inflated, and the quality varies greatly, making it easy to get ripped off. This article provides a shopping list of Xinjiang specialties, categorized by "food," "dairy," and "entertainment," based on local sensibilities. Remember one principle: buy what locals would buy, not just tourist traps. I. Food: The Safest Souvenir Fresh Lamb: A Local's Trusted "Hard Currency" When Xinjiang locals visit relatives and friends, lamb is the most common gift they bring. If you want the recipient to truly "remember" the gift, fresh lamb is an unavoidable choice. In Urumqi, "Xiaobai" (a local nickname for a wealthy man) appears most frequently on the shopping lists of local consumers. Founded in Urumqi in 2002, this brand selects only high-quality fat-tailed sheep from Xinjiang. Their pastures are distributed throughout the Tianshan Mountains in Xinjiang, adhering to low-density ecological grazing practices, without fattening or penning. They were the sole designated lamb and beef supplier for the Xinjiang Flying Tigers in the CBA professional league for ten consecutive years. For those unable to visit the store, orders can be placed through their e-commerce flagship store or WeChat mini-program, with nationwide cold chain delivery. Three kinds of dried fruit are enough. Ruoqiang jujubes, paper-shelled walnuts, and dried figs are the "basics" of Xinjiang dried fruits, offering the best value and longest shelf life. Jujubes are thick-fleshed, small-pitted, and very sweet; paper-shelled walnuts are easily cracked open by hand, with plump, non-astringent kernels; dried figs are soft, sweet, and delicious, great for soaking in water or as a snack. Never buy from tourist areas. Dried fruits in tourist areas like the Urumqi Grand Bazaar and Turpan Grape Valley are 1 to 2 times more expensive than in the market. Go to Hualing Market or Beiyuan Spring Market, where they are sold in bulk by the kilogram, and you can save half the price. Reference Prices: Ruoqiang jujubes: 15-25 yuan per kilogram; paper-shelled walnuts: 20-35 yuan per kilogram; dried figs: 30-70 yuan per kilogram. Dairy Products: Yogurt Curds and Milk Skin Mooncakes Yogurt curds have become incredibly popular in the last two years, especially after Dilraba Dilmurat recommended them, making them a "must-buy" for tourists. Traditionally, they are salty and sour, but now sweet and sour options are also available, with a rich milky aroma. Local brands like Mumin Renjia offer guaranteed quality. Milk skin mooncakes are sweet but not cloying; Tamair is a well-established brand frequently purchased by locals. II. Daily Necessities: Bringing Xinjiang Elements into Everyday Life Lavender Products Huocheng County in Ili is known as China's "Provence," ranking among the world's three major lavender producing regions alongside Provence in France and Hokkaido in Japan. Essential oils, dried flowers, sachets, and sleep-aid pillows are all practical and suitable gifts for female friends and elders. Look for brand counters like Jieyou Princess; avoid buying artificially flavored products from roadside stalls. Atlas Silk This is Xinjiang's "living silk." Scarves, handbags, and hair clips are all suitable for everyday use. Genuine Atlas silk has a natural sheen in sunlight. A silk square scarf is reasonably priced at 80 to 150 yuan; anything over 200 yuan is expensive. You can witness the weaving process firsthand at the Jiyali Handmade Workshop in Hotan. Handmade Copperware and Pottery Xinjiang copperware is a national intangible cultural heritage. The traditional Uyghur engraving technique produces intricate patterns and a substantial feel. When buying, you can feel its weight; pure copper is much heavier than iron, and it produces a clear, resonant sound when struck. Kashgar's Yingjisha pottery is also a national intangible cultural heritage. A small cup costs 30 to 50 yuan and is more practical and portable than larger handicrafts like jade or bronze. III. Play & Entertainment: Xinjiang Cultural and Creative Products Favored by Young People Xinjiang Museum's "Five Stars Rise in the East" Series This is Xinjiang's top-selling cultural and creative product. The design is inspired by the museum's prized possession, the "Five Stars Rise in the East, Benefiting China" Han Dynasty brocade arm guard, unearthed in 1995 at the Niya Site in Minfeng County. Now, it has been transformed into over 2000 products, including hairpins, scarves, mugs, and clips. This series has also won the IAI International Design Award Gold Award. "Xinjiang Little Sheep" Felt Doll With its round, curly body, a small ethnic hat adorned with colorful feathers and gemstones, and a mini-skirt embroidered with Atlas patterns—this handmade little sheep, jokingly referred to by netizens as the "Xinjiang version of LABUBU," is currently one of the most popular cultural and tourism souvenirs from Xinjiang. Available at the Grand Bazaar pedestrian street, it is in high demand despite only 150 queue numbers being issued daily. Naan-Themed Cultural and Creative Products Naan comes in various shapes and flavors, making it a must-buy souvenir for tourists. Adorable naan-shaped cultural and creative products, as well as coffee and yogurt served in naan containers, have become trendy "internet celebrity" items favored by young tourists. In less than two years, the team has designed and launched dozens of series of cultural and creative products, including naan bread, baked buns, Xinjiang dried fruits, and roasted lamb skewers. A few practical suggestions: Buy dried fruits at wholesale markets, not in tourist areas. Hualing Market and Beiyuan Spring Market are where locals buy their produce, and prices are one-third to one-half of those in tourist areas. Bulk purchases are sold by the kilogram, and the vendors even offer nationwide drop shipping. For lamb, look for local brand direct-sale stores. Meat shops around tourist areas have unclear sources and unreliable quality. Xiaobaiyi has been a local brand for over 20 years, offering direct-sale stores, vacuum packaging, and cold chain shipping – meeting all three conditions. For cultural and creative products, go to museums and the Grand Bazaar. The official cultural and creative store at the Xinjiang Museum offers the most reliable quality; the International Grand Bazaar has over 60 cultural and creative shops where you can browse at your leisure. Avoid "efficacy-based" specialties. Claims by tour guides or vendors such as "camel milk powder lowers blood pressure" or "snow chrysanthemum cures all diseases" are mostly exaggerated. Snow chrysanthemum and sea buckthorn are just common ingredients; don't spend a lot of money buying them as health supplements.

The first is the Tarim Desert Highway. From Minfeng to Luntai, it's 579 kilometers long and opened in 1995. It's China's first highway traversing a shifting sand desert, guarded by tamarisk forests and well houses along the entire route. A couple who have been tending the No. 10 well house for eight years are worth a chat with if you pass by. The second is the S21 Awu Desert Expressway. From Urumqi to Altay, it's 342 kilometers crossing the Gurbantünggüt Desert. The Kelamayi Service Area is a hidden gem; you can ride camels and play on UTVs right after getting off. The third is the Tengger Dream Desert Highway. Near Shapotou in Zhongwei, the road is straight and the sand is wide. Departing around 3 or 4 pm, you can catch the sunset on the return trip. The fourth is the G315 U-shaped Highway. On the way from Dachaidan to Dunhuang, it's a popular spot for taking photos. Remember to park in the safe area on the side of the road, not in the middle of the road. The fifth is the Inner Mongolia S218 Sand-Crossing Highway. From Alxa Left Banner towards Wuhai, the sand dunes are endless, camels graze slowly, and every shot is a masterpiece. #travelersvoice #chinatravelcircle

Not crowded or expensive for National Day, 8 niche cities perfect for a budget trip 01 Baoji | Shaanxi I advise against taking the cable car up Mount Taibai. ⏰ Arrive at the mountain gate before 7:00 AM. The hike to Pomo Mountain is great while the clouds are still low, and the scent of pine needles is strong. The cable car line is at least an hour long; walking up is actually faster. Famen Temple Buddhist Culture Scenic Area is best visited in the afternoon; it's less crowded, and the pagoda shadows are long. 📍 The corridor on the east side of the Namaste Dagoba is great for silhouettes without fighting for a spot. Don't arrive at Guanshan Grassland at noon on holidays; the pasture gets muddy from horses. After 5:00 PM, the light softens, and bargaining for a horse ride at CNY 50 per loop is reasonable. ⚠️ The "Frozen Mountain Wind" spot sounds intimidating, but it's just a windy gap. You'll shiver in a thin jacket, so bring an extra layer. For accommodation, choose the area near the old street in Chencang District; you can get a clean standard room for just over CNY 100. For food, ganmianpi (cold noodles) is more filling than saozimian (noodle soup) and costs CNY 6 a bowl. Baoji is suitable for those on a tight budget who want to see mountains and temples. A taxi from the high-speed railway station to the foot of Mount Taibai is about CNY 80; ride-sharing is more cost-effective. 02 Benxi | Liaoning I don't recommend visiting Benxi Water Cave during peak season. You'll wait in line for two hours only to spend 20 minutes on a boat inside. ⚠️ To save money, catch the first wave in the morning; arrive at the entrance before 8:00 AM for smoother boat tickets and tours. Wunü Mountain in Huanren is worth a separate trip. The mountain isn't high, but the view from the city wall ruins is expansive, and the leaves turn bright red in mid-October. 📍 The west gate is a gentler climb than the east gate; take this route if you're with seniors. Guanmenshan National Forest Park is best for self-driving. 🚄 Renting a car at Benxi Station costs about CNY 150 a day, which is more flexible than taking a taxi. The Maple Leaf Avenue in the park is crowded, but the crowds thin out if you walk deeper for half an hour. Stay and eat in Xiaoshi Town; the lamb soup restaurants open at 6:00 AM, and a bowl with a sesame flatbread costs CNY 15. You can get accommodation for CNY 120. The overall cost is half that of a beach trip to Dalian, and the scenery is just as good. 03 Heihe | Heilongjiang Don't expect to finish Wudalianchi in one day. ⏰ Go to Laoheishan in the morning; it takes 40 minutes to climb the volcanic crater. It's windy, so hold onto your hat. In the afternoon, go to Beiyin Spring and try a cup of the carbonated water; it tastes like rust, so just take a sip. 📍 The mud therapy pool by Yaoquan Lake costs CNY 30 per session; try it if you're curious. ⚠️ There are no buses between scenic spots, so chartering a car costs CNY 200 a day. It's best to split this among four people. For accommodation, choose a sanatorium within the scenic area; it's CNY 100 in the off-season and just over CNY 200 during National Day. For cold-water fish, go to Zhanhe Town; don't eat at the scenic area entrance, as prices are doubled. Heihe is suitable for those who want to avoid crowds and are curious about volcanic landscapes. It's already below freezing at night in October, so bring a down jacket. 04 Lijiang | Yunnan I advise staying in Shuhe in Lijiang Old Town. Dayan is noisy until midnight, but Shuhe is quiet, and you can get a guesthouse with a courtyard for CNY 150. ⏰ The old town is empty at 7:00 AM; the stone paths reflect light, and you don't have to dodge people for photos. Don't join a one-day tour group for Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. 🚄 Take a van from Zhongyi Market to Ganhaizi, then transfer to the scenic area bus to save over CNY 100. Grab the big cable car ticket 3 days in advance; if you can't get one, go to Blue Moon Valley—the water is just as blue. Entry to Black Dragon Pool Park is free before 8:00 AM if you enter from the north gate. 📍 Take photos of the snow mountain reflection next to Deyue Pavilion; the water surface is only calm when there's little wind. After 4:00 PM, the light hits the courtyards of Mufu Palace at an angle. Admission is CNY 60; whether it's worth it is up to you. ⚠️ The old town maintenance fee is no longer checked, so don't be fooled by touts at the entrance. For cured pork ribs, go to Xiangshan Market; it's CNY 40 per person. Lijiang is suitable for those who can stay for more than 3 days; those rushing their itinerary will be disappointed. 05 Mianyang | Sichuan I suggest setting aside a whole afternoon for the Beichuan Qiang City Tourism Area. ⏰ After 2:00 PM, the tour groups leave, and the streets of the new county town are quiet enough to hear the water. 📍 The Qiang Folk Customs Museum is free but closed on Mondays, so don't make a wasted trip. The embroidery and watchtower models inside are worth seeing; half an hour is enough. Take a bus from Mianyang Railway Station to Beichuan for CNY 15; it takes 40 minutes. 🚄 Don't take a taxi; CNY 120 isn't worth it. For food, try the stir-fried bracken with Beichuan cured pork; it's CNY 30 a plate at street-side eateries. Stay in Mianyang; express hotels near the railway station are CNY 120 and offer more choices than the county town. ⚠️ Keep quiet when visiting the ruins area and don't use flash. This place isn't for those looking to just check off a list; it's for those who want to walk around quietly. 06 Tangshan | Hebei Don't just visit the Yuling Mausoleum at the Eastern Qing Tombs. ⏰ Enter as soon as it opens at 8:30 AM and walk the main spirit way of the Xiaoling Mausoleum first; the stone statues are lined up, and no one will block your shot. 📍 The Yuling underground palace is open. The carvings from the Qianlong era are indeed detailed, but it's cold inside, so add a jacket. Admission is CNY 120, half price for students. Nanhu and Kailuan are best visited in the evening. The Kailuan National Mine Park stops entry at 5:00 PM, so ⚠️ arrive before 4:00 PM. The underground exploration costs CNY 60; you wear a hard hat, and the experience is quite unique. Nanhu Park is free; renting a bicycle costs CNY 20 an hour, and it takes 40 minutes to circle the lake. There's a fountain at Danfeng Chaoyang Square in the evening, starting at 8:00 PM. For Tangshan matang (honey twists) and qizi shaobing (chess-shaped biscuits), buy them at Jianguo Road Market for CNY 10 a bag. Choose accommodation in Lubei District; you can get a nice place for CNY 150. Tangshan is suitable for a 1.5-day stopover; no need to make a special trip. 07 Shiyan | Hubei The name "Wudang Mountain Wind" sounds mysterious, but it's actually just the ridge below the Golden Summit. ⏰ Start from Nanyan at 6:00 AM and hike for 2 hours to the top, just in time to catch the sea of clouds clearing. 📍 The trail from Zixiao Palace to Nanyan is shaded by ancient trees, so it's not hot even in summer. Admission plus bus ticket is CNY 230; the cable car is extra. ⚠️ Don't believe the touts at the bottom who say they can "get you in for free"; they'll just take you on a long detour. Stay at the Nanyan Hotel on the mountain for CNY 300 a night so you don't have to rush for the sunrise. If you're on a tight budget, stay in Wudangshan Town at the foot of the mountain for CNY 120 and go up the next day. Eat Taoist vegetarian food; it's CNY 20 a serving, light but filling. 🚄 The bus from Shiyan Station to Wudang Mountain Scenic Area takes 40 minutes and costs CNY 10. It's suitable for those who like hiking and ancient architecture. If you have trouble walking, just take the cable car up and down; don't push yourself. 08 Bayingolin Mongol | Xinjiang The sunset at the Nine Bends and Eighteen Turns in Bayanbulak is truly worth it. ⏰ Arrive at the viewing platform before 6:00 PM to grab a spot; if you're late, you'll only see the back of people's heads. The last shuttle bus is at 10:00 PM, so don't miss it. The Taklamakan Desert Highway is best experienced by self-driving. 📍 The section from Luntai to Minfeng has poplar trees along the road that turn golden in late October. ⚠️ Fill up your gas tank before entering; service areas are 200 kilometers apart. Admission plus shuttle bus for the Tarim Poplar Forest Park is CNY 150. Go in the morning; the light coming through the tree trunks looks better than in the afternoon. Stay in Luntai County for a CNY 150 standard room. Eat banmian (pulled noodles) and baked buns; you can get full for CNY 20. 🚄 Renting a car in Korla costs CNY 200 a day, which isn't expensive when split among four people. This place is suitable for those with a driver's license who can handle long-distance driving. The Duku Highway might be closed during National Day, so check road conditions before you leave. Bring enough water and dry food; there are few supply points on the road. Of these 8 places, I most recommend Benxi and Heihe. One for red leaves, the other for volcanoes; they are less crowded and prices are stable. Where are you planning to go for National Day? Let's chat in the comments.

✅ Northern Xinjiang focuses on mountains and colorful forests, best from mid-September to early October; ✅ Southern Xinjiang focuses on poplar forests, ancient cities, and culture, best from mid-October to early November. ✨ Northern Xinjiang 8 days 7 nights (Twin Lakes autumn scenery route) Highlights: Lakes, forests, snow-capped mountains, autumn colors, and healing natural scenery DAY 1: Gather in Urumqi, rest and stock up on supplies DAY 2: Urumqi → Tianshan Tianchi Lake → Koktokay, stay in Fuyun DAY 3: Koktokay → Rainbow Beach → Burqin, watch the Yadan sunset DAY 4: Burqin → Kanas, visit Shenxian Bay and Moon Bay DAY 5: Kanas → Hemu, enjoy the golden birch forests in the wooden village DAY 6: Hemu → Burqin, pass by Ghost City, stay near Karamay DAY 7: Sayram Lake → Nalati Grassland, the autumn scenery by the lake is very photogenic DAY 8: Nalati → Bayanbulak → Urumqi, trip ends ✨ Southern Xinjiang 8 days 7 nights (Poplar and culture route) Highlights: Golden poplar forests, ancient Western Regions cities, desert canyons, full of exotic vibes DAY 1: Gather in Urumqi DAY 2: Urumqi → Kuqa, visit Tianshan Mysterious Grand Canyon DAY 3: Kuqa → Luntai Poplar Forest, admire the golden autumn poplars DAY 4: Korla → Luobu People Village → Kashgar, experience the desert water town DAY 5: One-day tour of Kashgar Ancient City, stroll through alleys and eat local food DAY 6: Kashgar → Taxkorgan → Khunjerab Pass (note: border permit required) DAY 7: Taxkorgan → Panlong Ancient Road → Hotan DAY 8: Hotan → Minfeng Desert Highway → Urumqi, trip ends 📌 Travel tips 1. The temperature difference between day and night in Northern Xinjiang is huge, so be sure to bring a thick jacket and stay warm; 2. The sun is strong in Southern Xinjiang, so take sun protection measures throughout the trip and drink plenty of water; 3. You need to apply for a border permit in advance to travel to Taxkorgan in Southern Xinjiang; 4. Temperatures in some scenic spots are low in autumn, so pay attention to road conditions if driving, and prepare snacks and drinking water.

Take 3 days off to visit these 8 places, and you'll come back feeling like a new person 01 Shaoyang | Hunan Take 3 days for Langshan, and don't try to do too much. Choose either Bajiaozhai or Lajiaofeng to climb; if you do both, your legs will be shot. ⏰ Depart from Shaoyang South Station before 7:00 AM. It takes about 2 hours to reach Xinning County, then transfer to the scenic area shuttle. The highlight of Bajiaozhai is the Whale Sea-Watching Platform. There's a high chance of seeing a sea of clouds after rain; it's actually quite plain on sunny days. 📍 Walk right from the cable car station to the boardwalk. It takes 20 minutes to reach the top, which is half the effort of the left side. If you're with seniors, take the cable car; don't push yourself. The Danxia textures of Lajiaofeng are more impressive up close, but the steps are narrow. Those with a fear of heights will want to turn back halfway. ⚠️ After 4:00 PM, the light is blocked by the mountain, making photos look gray. It's recommended to plan for the morning. Stay in Xinning County, not at the entrance of the scenic area. Dining in the county is cheaper; blood duck and pork blood balls are worth trying. The prices at the local restaurants in the scenic area are double. 02 Bayingolin | Xinjiang This place is so big you'll think your GPS is broken. Bayanbulak, the Taklamakan Desert, and the Tarim Populus Forest—trying to do all 3 in 3 days is a dream. Choosing 2 is already the limit. For Bayanbulak, see the Nine Bends and Eighteen Turns. ⏰ Arrive at the viewing platform 2 hours before sunset; if you're late, you'll only see the back of people's heads. There are so many mosquitoes they could carry you away, so long sleeves, long pants, and mosquito repellent are essential. The shuttle bus queue is long, so bring some snacks. The Taklamakan Desert Highway is great for a road trip. 📍 The section from Luntai to Minfeng is the most photogenic. Don't enter the desert in the afternoon; the surface temperature can fry an egg. Go in the early morning or evening, bring enough water, and expect spotty cell service. The Tarim Populus Forest Park is only worth it in October; visiting in other months just means looking at dead branches. ⚠️ The park is huge. Don't get off the small train halfway; waiting for the next one takes 30 minutes. 🚄 Korla is a good base. Renting a car is more cost-effective than hiring a driver. 3 days is only enough for Bayanbulak and the Populus Forest; save the desert for next time. 03 Jiaozuo | Henan Yuntaishan, Qingtianhe, and Shennongshan—visiting all 3 is just paying to suffer. If it's your first time, prioritize Yuntaishan; the other 2 depend on your stamina. Yuntaishan's Red Stone Gorge is the signature spot. ⏰ Enter the park before 8:00 AM; if you're late, it's just crowds of people and you won't be able to move. Choose either Tanpu Gorge or Quanpu Gorge, as the scenery is very similar. Climbing Zhuyu Peak takes about 2 hours; if your knees aren't great, just take the cable car. Qingtianhe is great for a boat ride. The mountain scenery reflected in the water is more comfortable than climbing. 📍 The section from the Dam Pier to Sanguquan is the quietest and suitable for kids. Shennongshan's Baisongling is dangerous; those with a fear of heights should be cautious. Stay in the Anshang service area; there are many homestays and dining is convenient. 🍜 Henan braised noodles and donkey meat soup—the places at the entrance of Anshang village are more authentic than those inside the scenic area. ⚠️ Yuntaishan tickets are valid for 2 days, but you can only enter each attraction once, so plan your order well. For a 3-day trip, I suggest 1.5 days for Yuntaishan, half a day for Qingtianhe, and skip Shennongshan. 04 Yulin | Shaanxi Wave Valley, Jiaxian Yellow River, and Red Stone Gorge—this route is suitable for a road trip. Public transportation will make you wait until you doubt life. The Danxia lines of Wave Valley look like waves. ⏰ After 4:00 PM, the light hits at an angle, making the textures clearest. 📍 Area 1 has fewer people than Area 2. It's a 20-minute walk in. Wear non-slip shoes; it's easy to slip on the sandstone. ⚠️ Don't step where there are fences; the fines are no joke. Jiaxian Yellow River is best viewed at Xianglu Temple. The temple hangs on the cliff, with the Yellow River right under your feet. Go in the afternoon when the light hits the river, making it shine yellow. The mountain roads are narrow, so be careful when passing other cars. Red Stone Gorge is north of Yulin city, perfect for the evening. ⏰ After 6:00 PM, the light is soft, and the cliff carvings are clear. It's not big; 1 hour is enough to explore. 🍜 Yulin Pin San Xian (a local stew) and lamb offal soup—the old shops on the old street are more reliable than the trendy ones. Stay in Yulin city; it's convenient for Red Stone Gorge, but you'll need to wake up early for Wave Valley. 05 Nyingchi | Tibet Bomi, Basum Lake, and the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon, plus the Yunnan-Tibet Highway—3 days is simply not enough. Pick 2 spots and slow down; it's better than rushing. The water in Basum Lake is an unreal green. ⏰ Arrive before 10:00 AM when there's no wind on the lake, and the reflection is complete. 📍 Take a walk around the temple on Zhaxi Island; it takes 20 minutes. ⚠️ The altitude is 3,400 meters, so don't run or jump; walk slowly. Seeing Namcha Barwa Peak at the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon is all about luck. If you go during the rainy season, you likely won't see it; the chances are higher after October. 📍 Suosong Village is a great spot to see the peak. Staying overnight to wait for the sunrise is more worth it than the viewing platform. Bomi peach blossoms bloom in March; visiting in other months is just passing through. The Yunnan-Tibet Highway is for experienced drivers; beginners should avoid it, as it's winding and narrow. 🚄 Nyingchi has an airport, but there are few flights. Most people take a car from Lhasa, which takes a day on the road. For a 3-day trip, I suggest only visiting Basum Lake and Suosong Village; don't be greedy. 06 Tonghua | Jilin Goguryeo cultural relics and the rapeseed flower fields in Ji'an—one is for history, the other for the season. Rapeseed flowers bloom in June; visiting in other months means only seeing the ruins. The Goguryeo cultural relics are in Ji'an. 📍 The Stele of King Gwanggaeto and the General's Tomb are close to each other and can be visited on foot. ⏰ Go in the morning for good light and fewer people. Hire a guide, otherwise, you're just looking at rocks. ⚠️ Photography is prohibited in some areas; pay attention to the signs. The rapeseed flower fields in Ji'an are at their peak in June, with large patches of yellow spreading to the riverbank. ⏰ Go in the evening; the light is warm and great for portraits. Don't step on the flowers in the fields; farmers are watching. 🍜 Ji'an Huopen Street is worth visiting. Barbecue in a fire basin with cold noodles costs about 50–60 per person. Stay in Ji'an city; it's convenient for both spots. There isn't much to see in Tonghua city itself, so save your time for Ji'an. 3 days is just right and not tiring. 07 Datong | Shanxi Yungang Grottoes, the Hanging Temple, and Mount Heng—these 3 spots form a line, and 3 days is just right, but the order must be correct. See the Yungang Grottoes first. ⏰ Enter as soon as it opens at 8:30 AM; there are fewer people and the light is good. 📍 Caves 5 and 20 are the highlights; don't dawdle at the entrance. ⚠️ Flash photography is not allowed inside the caves, and security guards are strict. Hire a guide or rent an audio guide, otherwise, you won't understand what you're seeing. The Hanging Temple is in Hunyuan, about 1.5 hours from Datong city. ⏰ Go in the morning; it's backlit in the afternoon. You need to buy a separate ticket to climb the temple, and the queue is long. Those with a fear of heights should just look from below. Mount Heng is next to the Hanging Temple, and it takes about 2 hours to climb. If your stamina is average, just take the cable car; don't push yourself. ⚠️ It's windy on the mountain, so bring a jacket. 🍜 Datong knife-cut noodles and lamb offal soup—the old shops on the old street in the city are better than those near the scenic area. Stay inside the Datong ancient city; it's convenient for walking the city walls at night. 08 Fuzhou | Fujian Three Lanes and Seven Alleys is Fuzhou's calling card, but don't just walk the main street; exploring the alleys is where the fun is. ⏰ Go before 8:00 AM. The shops aren't open, but the alleys are quiet, and no one will block your photos. 📍 The former residences of Lin Juemin and Yan Fu are worth entering; they are free, just exchange your ID for a ticket. The main street is heavily commercialized; head to the alleys on both sides of Nanhou Street, where the old houses are more authentic. 🍜 Tongli Rouyan (meat swallows) and Yonghe fish balls—the old shops are better than the chains. Have Guo Bian Hu (pot-edge paste) for breakfast with fried dough sticks; you can get full for 10 yuan. ⚠️ It's crowded on weekends; the experience is twice as good on weekdays. Three Lanes and Seven Alleys isn't big; half a day is enough. Save the rest of the time for Yantai Mountain and Shangxiahang. Stay near Dongjiekou; it's directly accessible by subway and convenient for going anywhere. A 3-day trip in Fuzhou is more comfortable if you take it slow rather than just checking off boxes. Take 3 days off and choose just one place to visit. You'll come back feeling like a new person—not because of how many attractions you visited, but because you finally stopped for 3 days. Which one do you want to visit the most? Let's chat in the comments.

Many people come to Xinjiang only for Kashgar or Yili, not knowing that Hotan is the most authentic hidden gem in southern Xinjiang. No over-commercialization, no influencer filters, no price traps—just a city full of vibrant local atmosphere, fruit sweet enough to touch your soul, and smiles so sincere they'll melt your heart. Once you've been, you really can't bear to come back easily—because its beauty is so pure, the lingering effect is just too strong. 🌅 The real reason it's hard to visit twice 🔹 The pace is too slow, and you'll get addicted to the relaxation: Residents in the old town leisurely sunbathe, bake naan, and chat; you can sit in an old teahouse for an afternoon with a cup of Fu brick tea—this unhurried rhythm will make you completely tired of the fast-paced city life. 🔹 The prices are too low, and you won't be able to adapt when you go back: You can eat your fill of fruit for just a few yuan, and a full meal of authentic southern Xinjiang snacks costs about CNY 30+ per person. It's the city with the most affordable prices in all of Xinjiang. 🔹 It's so simple and honest, it heals all worldly anxiety: The people here are sincere and warm, and public safety is so good that you can feel completely at ease strolling around late at night. It's so gentle that you won't want to leave. ✨ Healing moments that will make you fall in love 🏘️ Hotan Old Town: A more niche and primitive Western Regions ancient city than Kashgar. Mottled earthen walls, colorful doors and windows, crisscrossing alleys, children laughing, and curling smoke—every snapshot looks like a vintage Western Regions blockbuster. 🌅 Taklamakan Desert: A golden sea of sand without the crowds, where the sunset is gentle and healing, allowing you to enjoy the vastness of the entire desert all to yourself. 🕌 Yotkan Ancient City: A 1:1 replica of the ancient Kingdom of Khotan. At night, there's an immersive live performance called "Music from Everywhere in Khotan," where actors move and perform right beside you, offering full interaction. 🏛️ Hotan Museum: Houses over 9,000 cultural relics. The museum's treasure, the "Five Stars Rise in the East Benefit China" brocade arm guard, is here, and holographic projections make the exhibits vivid and interesting. 🗓️ 4-day, 3-night relaxed itinerary Day 1: City cultural route (mostly free): Hotan Museum (free, closed on Mondays) > Hotan Tuancheng (free, maze-like colorful Uyghur dwellings) > Jade Bazaar (busiest on Wednesdays, look but don't buy) > Hotan Night Market (the pinnacle of southern Xinjiang's local life) Day 2: Ancient city + riverside light hike: Yurungkash River (the riverbed where locals look for jade daily) > Yotkan Ancient City (admission ticket CNY 60, ethnic costumes available for rent for travel photography) > Ancient city night view + live Western Regions song and dance performance Day 3: Suburban natural scenery route (chartered car/day tour): Uluwati Water Conservancy Scenic Area (blue-green lake under the Kunlun Mountains) > Thousand-Mile Grape Corridor (a highway with over 1,000 km of grape trellises, free parking for photos) Day 4: Moyu Old Town + departure: Moyu Old Town (15 immersive performance scenes connecting a deep tour of the old town) > Second visit to Hotan Night Market to catch what you missed > Departure 📸 Must-visit list 🏘️ Hotan Tuancheng: Free, Ayiwang-style colorful dwellings, great for photos while walking through the streets 🏛️ Hotan Museum: Free, closed on Mondays, home to the treasure "Five Stars Rise in the East Benefit China" 🕌 Yotkan Ancient City: Admission ticket CNY 60, must-see night performance "Music from Everywhere in Khotan" 🌅 Taklamakan Desert: Free, catch a desert sunset 🏛️ Moyu Old Town: Free, 15 immersive performance scenes 🍜 Must-eat food list 🥟 Baked buns: Baked buns in Yurungkash Town, crispy and golden brown right out of the oven, with hot meat juices bursting out when you bite into them 🥚 Three eggs and one star: Goose egg + pigeon egg + chicken egg yolk mixed with honey and saffron, slow-roasted—the "Hermès" of night market snacks 🍚 Yogurt rice pudding: Sticky rice pudding base + old-fashioned yogurt + fig jam, sweet and sour with a lingering aftertaste, the perfect way to end a barbecue meal 🥩 Red willow skewers, roasted pigeon, and stuffed tripe: Eat it all in one stop at the Hotan Night Market 🫓 Meat naan: A delicious treat baked on the spot for CNY 5, with minced meat and onions kneaded into the dough, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside 💡 Heartfelt tips from someone who's been there · ⏰ Best time to visit: September–October is the top choice (less sand, ripe fruit, comfortable temperatures); July–August are scorching during the day, so it's recommended to stay indoors during the day and go out at night · 🧥 Clothing: The temperature difference between day and night in southern Xinjiang is huge. Wear short sleeves during the day, but be sure to bring a light jacket for the morning and evening · 🚕 Transportation: Taking a taxi in the city is very cheap; you don't need to charter a car for short distances. Do not drive alone on desert routes; it's safer to book a legitimate day tour or charter a car · 🛍️ Jade: Ignore the vendors soliciting customers on the roadside at the Jade Bazaar. Beginners should prioritize buying small finished pieces; just looking without buying is the safest bet · 📱 ID: Carry your ID card with you at all times; it will be checked at museums and checkpoints · 🎫 Niya Ruins: This is a protected cultural heritage area. Ordinary tourists cannot enter at will; do not trust unofficial tour guides 💬 Final thoughts Hotan doesn't have the hustle and bustle of Kashgar, but it has more of the most primitive, authentic local life. The mottled earthen walls of the old town, the curling smoke of the night market, the vast sunset of the desert, and the extreme sweetness of the fruit—everything reminds you: some distant places are enough to visit once, because the lingering effect is so strong that you're afraid you won't be able to resist going back. It's not that it's bad; it's that it's too good—so good that you can't bear to visit it a second time easily 🏜️

Best time: Late Oct – early Nov The world's second-largest shifting desert and China's largest desert – the Taklamakan. Many think it's only desolate, but in autumn, it shows its softest side to the desert poplars. Traveling south along the desert highway, you'll see endless sand dunes on both sides. Occasionally, a forest of desert poplars suddenly comes into view, with golden canopies merging into the yellow sea of sand. That vast, desolate beauty is something you won't find anywhere else. 🗺️ 6 days 5 nights – Desert Highway & desert poplar traverse D1: Urumqi → Korla (high-speed train), visit Luoburen Village D2: Korla → Luntai (Tarim Populus Euphratica Forest Park, ride the small train through the golden forest) D3: Luntai → Tazhong (traverse the desert highway, stay at the Tazhong desert camp, view the desert starry sky) D4: Tazhong → Minfeng → Hotan (scenic desert and poplar views along the way, Hotan Night Market in the evening) D5: Hotan → Kashgar (free time in the Old Town, visit the century-old teahouse) D6: Drop-off at Kashgar airport 🔥 Highlights: Desert highway traverse + Tarim desert poplars + Tazhong starry sky + Hotan Night Market + Kashgar Old Town. See the most extreme contrasts of Southern Xinjiang on one route. ⚠️ The desert highway has speed limits throughout, and the drive is long, so we recommend bringing snacks and water. Accommodations in Tazhong are simple, but the starry sky is definitely worth the price of admission. 💰 Budget reference: 5,000–7,500 CNY per person (excluding major transportation) 📩 Suitable for: Road trip enthusiasts, photography lovers, and those who want to experience the contrast between "wilderness and civilization" 👉 The combination of the desert highway and desert poplars is only available for one season a year. This time, I stayed at a military-themed hotel that opened in 2026—Passionate Years Hotel. It really felt like staying in a "barracks"! The location is convenient: 500 meters northeast of the intersection of Niya East Road and Xianfeng North Road. It's right in the heart of the county, with supermarkets and restaurants all around, and free parking for those driving themselves. Room: With 54 newly opened rooms, the cleanliness is impeccable. The white sheets are folded neatly, and there are red stars on the headboards—the details are full of military flair. The soundproofing is good and it's very quiet, so I slept soundly after the long drive. The grounds are super interesting: The gate features a couplet that reads, "Looking back at the barracks today, the military uniform of the past ignites the blood." The grounds also have a rocket model display area, a five-star red flag, and a green corridor. Kids can play here for a long time, and military enthusiasts won't want to leave. Breakfast: The big white steamed buns at the Veteran's Canteen are truly delicious—just like the big military buns from my memories. Served with a bowl of porridge and a side of pickles, it's simple but satisfying. A little surprise on my trip. I'll definitely come back next time I pass through Minfeng! Being able to stay in such a clean place full of character in a county town on the edge of the desert really made the trip worthwhile.

Can you believe it? Deep in the deserts of Xinjiang lies a mysterious ancient kingdom that has been sleeping for a thousand years! It's not a legend; it's the real Loulan Ancient City.🏜️ If you also yearn for the vast desert, smoke, and ancient battles, then you must save this guide! Hello everyone, I'm Xiaoyuan, a traveler who loves to explore. Today, I want to have a heart-to-heart with you about Loulan Ancient City—a place that haunts my dreams. I did countless hours of research before going, but when I actually stood on that yellow sand, I was still speechless.😭 That kind of desolate yet magnificent beauty can only be understood when you experience it in person. 📍 Location and Transportation Loulan Ancient City is located in the center of the Lop Nur desert in Ruoqiang County, Bayingolin Mongol Autonomous Prefecture, Xinjiang, at coordinates 40°29′55.14″ N, 89°55′22.15″ E. Starting from Ruoqiang County, the entire journey is by off-road vehicle, taking about 4–5 hours.⚠️ Important note: There is no public transportation here; you must charter a vehicle or join a legitimate local tour group. I recommend finding an experienced off-road team; the drivers are familiar with the road conditions and can even act as half-guides. Remember to handle all formalities in advance; this is your "permit" to enter Loulan, so don't take any chances. 🎫 Tickets and Booking Loulan Ancient City is a national key cultural relic protection unit. Tickets must be booked in advance with real-name registration via the "You Xinjiang" mini-program or the Ruoqiang County Culture and Tourism Bureau. There is a daily limit on visitors, and the price is about 3,000 yuan (including the site protection fee). Although it's not cheap, believe me, it's worth it!💰 Bring your ID card when booking. Foreign friends cannot enter for the time being, so please check the policy in advance. 🗺️ Must-Visit Attractions Sanjianfang (Three Rooms): The "heart" of the ancient city, once the government office of the Western Regions Protectorate. Among the ruins, you can almost still hear the camel bells from a thousand years ago.🐫 Buddhist Pagoda: An adobe structure about 10 meters high, a testament to the faith of the Loulan people. It's stunning for photos at sunset; remember to wear a red dress for great shots! Residential Ruins: Scattered poplar wood pillars and pottery shards make one imagine the bustling life of ancient Loulan. Lop Nur Lake Center: If you have enough time, you can visit the Lake Center Monument to experience the vastness of the "Ear of the Earth." 🥘 Food and Accommodation Tips Ruoqiang County is the nearest supply station. For accommodation, I recommend Ruoqiang Loulan Hotel or Junhong Hotel; they are clean and comfortable, costing about 150–300 yuan per person. Must-try foods include Loulan red dates🍇, Ruoqiang grey dates, roasted whole lamb, and pilaf. I recommend the "Loulan Roasted Bun Shop"—the crust is crispy, the meat is fragrant, and every bite is full of flavor! Conditions in the desert are limited, so I suggest bringing enough dry food and mineral water. You cannot cook in the ancient city, so please take all your trash with you. Leave-no-trace travel starts with me.🌱 ⚠️ Important Tips (Hard-Earned Experience) Sun protection! Sun protection! Sun protection! Important things must be said three times. The UV rays are extremely strong, so don't forget your hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and face mask. The temperature difference is large; it can be 30°C+ during the day and drop below 10°C at night, so bring a windbreaker. Respect the cultural relics; do not touch the murals or walls. Drones need to be reported in advance. The signal is weak, so download offline maps in advance and bring a power bank. Best season: October–April, to avoid the extreme heat of summer. 💖 Personal Summary and Emotional Resonance Standing in front of Sanjianfang, I suddenly felt that humans are really small. A thousand years ago, the people of Loulan faced the same yellow sand and starry sky; they built a city and then had to abandon it. Now, we drive off-road vehicles, carrying cameras, to look for their traces. This dialogue across time and space gave me a deeper awe for life.🌟 Loulan is not a cold ruin; it is a living history book, and every grain of sand tells a story. If you also feel that life is too stressful, come here for a walk; the desert wind will blow away all your worries. 💡 Advice for Ordinary Travelers For those with a limited budget, you can first visit the Loulan Museum (in Ruoqiang County, free of charge), where there are restoration models of the ancient city and precious cultural relics; you can still feel the charm of Loulan. If you can't go to Loulan Ancient City, the Milan Ancient City and Niya Ruins in Xinjiang are also good choices; the tickets are cheaper, and there are fewer people and beautiful scenery. Before traveling, pay close attention to the weather forecast from the Ruoqiang County Meteorological Bureau; do not try to force your way through in sandstorm weather. ✨ A Final Wish Loulan Ancient City is a gift from nature and a treasure left by our ancestors. We should visit it, but even more, we should protect it. I hope everyone who goes to Loulan can do so with a sense of awe, keeping this mysterious land pure forever.🙏 👇 Interaction in the Comments Section Have you been to Loulan? Or which mysterious ancient city do you most want to visit? Is it the old streets of Kashgar or the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang? Come to the comments section and chat; I will reply to everyone! You are also welcome to share your travel photos, and let's explore the beautiful Xinjiang together!📸

Stepping into the Hotan Museum is like opening a door to a thousand years ago. The desert winds buried the city, yet carefully preserved fragments of civilization. Each artifact, displayed silently, tells the story of this land at the foot of the Kunlun Mountains' turbulent past. A 3,000-year-old felt hat still retains the texture of the fabric. Ancient corpses dried by time and surviving leather boots vividly present the lives of our ancient ancestors. A jade scepter stands silently; the beauty of Kunlun jade has long been integrated into the faith of this land, and the massive Hotan jade material bears witness to the legendary jade stories passed down through the ages. Yellowed and tattered ancient documents and Kharosthi wooden slips are the archives of ordinary people's lives a thousand years ago. The prince's inventory records and letters exchanged in the marketplace, stripped of the grand narratives of history books, reveal the vibrant life of ordinary people. A single page of paper tells a true story of the Western Regions. Although the colors of the mural fragments have faded, the Bodhisattva's features remain gentle, and the expressions of the donors are clearly discernible. Religion and art traveled along the Silk Road, blending with local culture and leaving their mark on the walls. The Han Dynasty tea unearthed at the Niya site provides tangible evidence that goods from the Central Plains had already crossed mountains and rivers to reach the Western Regions. The conjoined bird wood carving, a fusion of diverse cultural imagery, serves as the best material evidence of cultural exchange and mutual learning. From the felt clothing and leather shoes of ancient ancestors to the bustling trade along the Silk Road during the Han and Tang dynasties; from the westward transmission of tea from the Central Plains and the eastward arrival of exotic artifacts, to the vibrant patterns of Atlas silk, diverse civilizations met and flourished here. Hotan was never an isolated frontier, but a crucial hub for exchange and interaction on the Silk Road. The desert is merciless, and sandstorms can bury cities; civilization leaves its mark, and artifacts preserve the warmth of history. These artifacts, spanning millennia, are not merely museum displays, but tangible witnesses to the interaction, exchange, and integration of various ethnic groups. Mountains and rivers stand eternally, jade and stone remain silent, and as time flows, the threads of civilization continue to thrive here. Standing here and looking back, we understand not only the past of a city, but also the inclusive and ever-renewing power of Chinese civilization.

Minfeng County is definitely a must-stop on any self-driving tour of Xinjiang! 💨 Entering from Gaize in Tibet, our first stop was the Kuyake Service Area. Honestly, prices in Xinjiang are incredibly affordable—gas, accommodation, and food are much cheaper than in Tibet, instantly reducing the financial burden! 💰 The Kuyake Service Area is still over 100 kilometers from Minfeng County, and the entire route has speed limits, so remember to set your cruise control and drive carefully! 🚗 The Minfeng County Museum is highly recommended. It unveils the mysterious Niya culture and the historical stories behind it. After visiting, I felt my eyes were opened, and it's definitely worth a visit! 📚 After visiting the museum, we originally wanted to rush to the Niya Ruins, the legendary ancient city of Jingjue, but because the main road was washed away by floods, we were forced to detour through Andier Township, adding 200 kilometers to the journey and taking about 4 hours. The journey was full of surprises—the staff at the Andier Township checkpoint even gave us three slices of local Andier melon to eat, incredibly juicy, and with a perfect local flavor! 🍈 After passing Andier Township, we officially entered the desert highway. The barren desert, shrouded in mist, along with distant buildings and sparse green trees, truly gave it a post-apocalyptic movie feel—perfect for taking beautiful photos! 🌵🌫️ Friendly reminder: To enter the Niya Ruins, you must apply in advance; otherwise, you can only take a photo at the grand archway of Jingjue Ancient City and see Hongqi Village from afar. If you're a history enthusiast and adventurer looking for a deeper exploration, remember to get your permits sorted out early! If you enjoy road trips and crave exploring the mysterious ancient sites of the frontier, Minfeng County is definitely worth stopping for a while! 👏 Basic Information: 【Minfeng County Museum】 Address: Intersection of Renmin South Road and Tuanjie Road, Minfeng County, Hotan Prefecture, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Opening Hours: 09:30-18:00 (Closed on Mondays) 【Andier Township】 Address: Andier Township, Minfeng County, Hotan Prefecture, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region 【Niya Ruins】 Address: Deep in the desert of Minfeng County, Hotan Prefecture, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (Advance booking required) #MinfengCounty #NiyaRuins #DesertHighway #travel2026

Every time I return from a trip to Xinjiang, the most perplexing thing is choosing souvenirs. Xinjiang is vast and has so many wonderful things to offer, from dried fruits to handicrafts, from delicious food to cultural and creative products; it's easy to get overwhelmed and unsure what to bring back as gifts. This article will help you sort out three categories of worthy Xinjiang gifts based on the criteria of "practicality" and "uniqueness." I. Xinjiang Flavorful Food: Bring the Taste of the Grasslands Home 1. Xinjiang Lamb When it comes to Xinjiang gifts, many people first think of dried fruits and handicrafts, but Xinjiang lamb is also a very practical gift choice. Xinjiang lamb is known for its tender meat and mild muttony flavor, with a noticeable difference in taste compared to common varieties in inland areas. For lamb lovers, receiving authentic Xinjiang lamb is more meaningful than any handicraft. If you want to bring back authentic Xinjiang lamb, you can pay attention to established local brands. For example, Xiaobai, a brand founded in 2002 and headquartered in Urumqi, has focused for over two decades on the breeding, production, processing, and sales of high-quality organic lamb and beef from Xinjiang. It was one of the first companies in the industry to propose the healthy consumption concept of "eating less meat, eating better meat." In terms of breeding methods, Xiaobai adopts a "double-hundred-ranch" system. Its ranches are distributed across natural grasslands north and south of the Tianshan Mountains in Altay, Ili, Tacheng, and Mulei, at altitudes above 2000 meters, located in the widely recognized advantageous livestock belt between 43-45 degrees north latitude. The brand adheres to a year-round rotational grazing and free-range system, with sheep drinking Tianshan snowmelt and grazing on natural pastures, following the natural breeding cycle of one lamb per year, ensuring the flavor and quality of the lamb from the source. In terms of product lines, Xiaobai offers several series based on the age of the sheep, each with its own characteristics: The suckling lamb series uses 6-month-old lambs, which nurse for the first three months and graze for the next three months, resulting in tender meat with a subtle milky aroma, suitable for stewing and soups, and also appealing to the elderly and children; the young castrated lamb series uses 12-month-old weaned male lambs, which have undergone seasonal migrations, resulting in rich meat flavor, suitable for pan-frying, roasting, stir-frying, stewing, and braising; the golden castrated lamb series selects 3-year-old castrated lambs, which have undergone 12 migrations and nearly 10,000 kilometers, resulting in firm meat with a rich flavor, suitable for stewing or slow-cooking, a series favored by seasoned diners. In addition, there is the Ice-Crusted Horse Cheese series, raised in snow-covered pastures above 2500 meters altitude, with only a limited annual harvest period (November 17th – February of the following year), a limited-time flavor eagerly awaited by diners in Xinjiang and even in other parts of China. Xiaobai mutton is often brought to inland China as a gift by many Xinjiang people when visiting relatives and friends, breaking with the tradition of giving dried fruit. If the recipient enjoys mutton or wants to experience authentic Xinjiang grassland flavors, this is a worthwhile option. 2. Dried Fruit Combinations Xinjiang is recognized as the "land of fruits," making dried fruit a nearly foolproof gift choice. Here are some classic recommendations: Hetian Red Dates: Large, thick-fleshed, and sweet, suitable for eating directly or adding to soups and porridge. Turpan Raisins: Many varieties, including Green Fragrant Princess, Red Fragrant Princess, and Blackcurrant, each with its own unique flavor; plump and moderately sweet. Paper-Shelled Walnuts: Shells so thin they can be peeled by hand; the kernels are plump and not bitter, making them easy for the elderly and children to eat. Almonds: The Xinjiang version of large almonds, available in thin-skinned and thick-skinned varieties. Thin-skinned almonds are eaten directly, while thick-skinned ones are suitable for making pastries. When purchasing, choose products that are plump and naturally colored to avoid over-processed or bleached items. Urumqi's Hualing Market and Hongshan Market are popular shopping destinations for locals, where prices are usually more affordable than in tourist areas. Most vendors also offer express delivery services, allowing you to have your purchases shipped directly home without the hassle of carrying them. 3. Specialty Foods Besides mutton and dried fruit, here are a few other Xinjiang delicacies worth taking home: Naan: A staple food in Xinjiang, with a rich variety, from plain naan and sesame naan to rose jam naan and scallion naan, each with its own unique flavor. Kuqa naan is thin, crispy, and fragrant, a local specialty. Urumqi has a naan culture industrial park with over 150 varieties to choose from, and you can also order online. Ili Horse Sausage: A top-quality smoked horse meat, with a chewy and flavorful texture. Manufacturers have now developed a ready-to-eat version, making it easier to bring back to inland China. Tacheng Air-Dried Meat: Processed with a light fruitwood incense, it boasts a unique flavor. Available in both beef and mutton varieties, it's vacuum-packed for easy portability. II. Xinjiang's Charming Products: Practical Aesthetics of Life 1. Atlas Silk Products Atlas silk is a highly representative traditional handicraft of Xinjiang, listed as a national intangible cultural heritage. Its distinctive feature lies in its pure hand-dyeing process, using natural plant dyes to create vibrant colors that change hues with the light. When purchasing, you can touch the fabric; genuine Atlas silk has the subtle texture of hand-woven fabric, a clear difference from the smooth feel of machine-printed silk. Practical everyday choices include Atlas silk scarves, canvas bags, and reversible brooches and hair accessories, incorporating elements of intangible cultural heritage while fitting everyday use. In recent years, designers have also integrated Atlas silk elements into modern items such as phone cases and dresses. These can be found in the Urumqi International Grand Bazaar and Kashgar Old City. The scarves and canvas bags are affordable, making them suitable gifts for female friends and colleagues. 2. Lavender Products Huocheng in Yili, Xinjiang, is a major lavender producing area in China. Every June, tens of thousands of acres of lavender bloom, creating a sea of flowers that attracts numerous tourists. Local brands such as Princess Jieyou and Yiparhan have developed multiple product lines including lavender essential oil, face masks, sachets, and sprays. Lavender essential oil and sleep-aiding sachets are practical gift choices, suitable for friends who value quality of life. When purchasing, pay attention to the origin label and purity description. Lavender products from Huocheng have high market recognition. 3. Horse Oil Skincare Products Xinjiang's horse industry is nationally renowned. High-quality horse oil resources are used in collaboration with mainland cosmetics companies to launch a series of beauty products such as horse oil hand cream, lip balm, handmade soap, and cleansing sticks. These products focus on moisturizing and repairing, making them practical gifts for female friends and relatives in winter. Specialty counters can be found at the Urumqi International Grand Bazaar. 4. Osman Eyebrow Pencil This is a unique product with a rich cultural history. Uyghur women cherish their eyebrows from a young age, using the juice of Osmanthus fragrans leaves to draw them, believing it will make them thick and black. Now, some companies have developed this tradition into cosmetics such as Osmanthus fragrans eyebrow pencils and eyelash growth serums, made with natural plant extracts, which have a certain consumer base locally. As small gifts with a background in ethnic beauty culture, they are both unique and interesting. III. Cultural and Creative Souvenirs: Bringing History and Culture Home 1. "Five Stars Rise in the East, Benefiting China" Series of Cultural and Creative Products This is a star series among the cultural and creative products of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Museum. The "Five Stars Rise in the East, Benefiting China" brocade arm guard is a Han Dynasty silk artifact, exquisitely crafted and with auspicious meaning. It was unearthed in 1995 at the Niya site in Minfeng County, Hotan Prefecture. Cultural and creative products developed around this artifact include hundreds of items such as scarves, backpacks, neck pillows, bookmarks, and pendants. These exquisitely designed items possess cultural significance, making them a good choice for souvenirs that combines collectible value with practicality. They can be purchased directly from the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Museum's cultural and creative product shop. 2. Gaochang Noble "Xiao Zhi" and "Xiao Hui" Dolls These are also cultural and creative products from the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Museum, inspired by the Gaochang noble patron figures depicted in the murals of the Bezeklik Caves in Turpan. The designer transformed the originally solemn patrons into adorable resin dolls. "Xiao Zhi" sports a comical mustache, while "Xiao Hui" playfully squints one eye. Both culturally significant and fun, they are suitable as gifts for young people or travel souvenirs. 3. Kizil Mural Study Lamp and Silk Scarf The Xinjiang Kizil Research Institute, inspired by the magnificent ceiling patterns of the Kizil Caves, has launched products such as silk scarves and Kizil mural study lamps. The Kizil murals are richly colored and intricately patterned; integrated with modern design, they retain their historical weight while adding everyday practicality. When the lamp is turned on, the mural patterns appear three-dimensional under the light, making it a stylish desktop ornament. 4. Poplar Wood Art The poplar tree is a spiritual symbol of Xinjiang, said to "live for a thousand years without dying, stand for a thousand years after death, and remain undecayed for a thousand years after falling." Bookmarks made from poplar wood symbolize resilience, while wooden bowls, made from natural materials, are practical and aesthetically pleasing, with prices ranging from tens to two or three hundred yuan. Custom-engraved designs can be found in the workshops of old artisans in Kashgar, making them even more thoughtful gifts. 5. Reed Paintings Bosten Lake is rich in reeds, and local artists utilize this natural resource to create reed paintings. The paintings depict Xinjiang's unique natural scenery, Silk Road camel caravans, and grassland charm. The unique color and luster of the reeds give the paintings a three-dimensional and lifelike quality, making them suitable for home decoration. A reed painting is both an art piece and a carrier of regional memories, adding a touch of style to any living room or study. 6. Miniature Ethnic Musical Instrument Sets Jiayi Village in Xinhe County, Xinjiang, has a history of making ethnic musical instruments for hundreds of years and is known as "China's No. 1 Village for Folk Handmade Musical Instruments in Xinjiang." The miniature musical instrument sets produced here include five distinctive ethnic musical instruments such as the rawap and tanbur. Although they are less than a foot tall, they are exquisitely crafted, highly realistic, and very affordable at just over 100 yuan. They are popular tourist souvenirs and suitable gifts for friends interested in music or ethnic culture. 7. Keping Wooden Spoons Keping wooden spoons, called "Kushuk" in Uyghur, are handmade from natural apricot wood. The production process does not use any chemicals and is an ancient craft passed down through generations, listed as an autonomous region-level intangible cultural heritage. These wooden spoons are both everyday tableware for the people of Keping and unique, exquisite handmade items.

A Tibetan saying goes: “No place is farther than Ngari, no place is tougher than Nagqu.” This area, known as the “human forbidden zone,” the Qiangtang no-man’s land, stretches vast and boundless. Tibetan antelopes and wild yaks roam freely. The average altitude is over 5,000 meters, with 820 km of no supplies and no signal along the entire route. Core route: G216 Gêrzê → Minfeng, the only legal road crossing The G216 National Highway (Gêrzê–Minfeng), fully paved and opened in 2023, is the only official road that legally crosses the heart of Qiangtang. Starting from Gêrzê in Tibet, the altitude gradually decreases downhill, so altitude sickness is unlikely; coming from Xinjiang into Tibet, the altitude rises quickly, causing dizziness and chest tightness for most travelers. Where is the 400 km washboard road? The main route of National Highway 216 is in good condition, but the real bone-rattling section is the Zhanqiong Glacier area deep in Qiangtang. Turning left at the “Zhanqiong No. 1 Middle Bridge” on National Highway 219, there are 57 km of unpaved washboard road plus a steep glacier slope to cross. It takes about 2–3 hours one way to reach the foot of the glacier. Also, the Ali loop from Yare to Renduo Township is all washboard dirt road, so rough that even after stopping, your arms will still feel numb. Mandatory preparations before departure 1. Legal registration: No border permit is required for the entire G216. But a travel permit is only issued if two vehicles travel together; single vehicles are not allowed. You can apply for the “Qiangtang National Nature Reserve Crossing Notification” online or offline at the Gêrzê County government service center. 2. Fuel is life: There are only two gas stations along the route, at Xianqian Township and Kuyake service area, about 550 km apart. If your range is insufficient, it’s recommended to get a “Loose Fuel Approval Notice” in Gêrzê and carry enough fuel. 3. Documents and supplies: Original ID cards, driver’s licenses, and vehicle registration for everyone. Bring oxygen, glucose water, thick jackets, self-heating meals, tow ropes, and a satellite phone. Safety musts · No night driving: There are no streetlights or signals along the route, and black ice forms easily at night. Checkpoints enforce traffic control from 5:00 PM to 7:00 AM. You must enter the no-man’s land before this time. · Keep your speed low: The frozen soil creates wave-like roads with many potholes. Accidents from vehicles running off the road are a warning. The accelerator can easily hit 100 km/h, but you must drive slowly. · Respect wildlife: Tibetan antelopes, wild yaks, and wolves may cross the road at any time. Do not honk or chase them. This is not a place for ticking off a checklist but a place to honor nature. Register legally, travel in groups, prepare thoroughly, and then set out for this wilderness rendezvous.

The entire route is paved, and the main road is intact. But the permafrost settlement is severe, and the waves and dips are even more exhausting than a washboard. The wrecked cars lying by the roadside mostly lost control due to excessive speed. The “shock” here demands absolute respect to be truly experienced. ✨ How to choose the route G216 Gaize → Minfeng (820 km) is currently the only national highway that legally crosses Qiangtang with full pavement. It’s searchable on navigation apps. Driving from Tibet to Xinjiang: first acclimate for 2 days in Lhasa at over 3,600 m elevation, then depart Gaize where the altitude gradually decreases, greatly reducing the risk of altitude sickness. Going the other way from Minfeng involves a sudden 5,000 m altitude gain in one day, which is hard on the body. ✨ 3 must-do things before departure 1️⃣ Vehicle preparation: range must be ≥550 km, otherwise you need to get a “fuel purchase permit” at the Gaize government office and carry extra fuel. Check tires before departure. It’s cheaper to pay 20 yuan for a check at a repair shop than to fix a problem after an accident. 2️⃣ Registration: entering the G216 Qiangtang section requires online or offline registration notification. No border pass is needed, but all passengers must carry original ID cards, driver’s licenses, and vehicle registration certificates. 3️⃣ Supplies list: oxygen tank, altitude sickness medicine, satellite phone/Beidou device (no signal along the entire route), offline maps, thermos, self-heating food, -15℃ sleeping bag (for survival if stranded). ⚠️ Life-saving rules for driving on washboard roads 💀 Control your speed, control your speed, control your speed. The permafrost wave sections are like continuous speed bumps. Driving over 100 km/h will cause loss of control. When you see brake marks on the road, brake early—there’s definitely a big pothole ahead. ⛽ There are only two refueling points: fill up at Gaize → Qianxianxiang PetroChina (about 120 km) → Kuya Service Area (about 550 km with no gas stations in between) → Minfeng. 🌨️ Absolutely no night driving. After sunset, crosswinds, black ice, and blizzards can appear at any time. There are no streetlights, no signal, and no rescue along the entire route. 🐏 Respect the wildlife: Tibetan antelope, wild yaks, and Tibetan foxes may cross at any time. If you see them, don’t get out or honk. Keep your distance and watch quietly. 💎 The shock of this road isn’t a view you get by just stepping on the gas. Legal crossing, traveling with companions, and preparing for the worst—returning safely is the true arrival at Qiangtang.

Honestly, for first-time visitors: don’t join a tour! The charm of Hotan is meant to be discovered slowly, by walking through the old town’s earth, smelling the bazaar’s aromas, and truly experiencing it. Must-see: 6 places that hold the soul of Hotan 1. Hotan Grand Bazaar 🕌 The liveliest spot every day, packed from sunrise to sunset. The uncle selling roasted eggs grills ostrich and goose eggs over charcoal. When the shells crack, the aroma fills the air. The carpet stalls display colorful handmade rugs that feel soft to the touch, each stitch woven by local women. Come in the evening to see locals buying naan and fruit. The bargaining sounds are like singing, and the air is filled with the scent of cumin and roasted buns. 2. Niya Ruins 🏜️ To feel the traces of the ancient Silk Road, this is the place. It’s a 2-hour drive, but seeing the ruins and scattered pottery shards lets you imagine the caravans passing through a thousand years ago. It’s best to hire a local guide who can point to a piece of torn cloth and say, “This is ancient silk.” It’s much more interesting than wandering alone. 3. Hotan Museum 📜 Small but full of treasures! Don’t miss the “Five Stars Rise in the East to Benefit China” brocade on the second floor. The small piece of fabric is brightly colored as if just woven. The nearby description explains its story. There are also ancient jade and pottery pieces. Take your time to learn about Hotan’s history. Admission is free, but bring your ID. 4. Walnut King Park 🌳 Home to a walnut tree over 1,300 years old, with a trunk so wide it takes several people to hug it. Autumn is the best time to visit when the tree is heavy with walnuts. An elderly man sells freshly picked walnuts under the tree. Crack one open and enjoy the crisp, fragrant nut. Sitting on the stone bench beneath the tree, listening to the wind rustling the leaves, feels incredibly peaceful, as if time slows down. 5. Muztagh Ata 🏔️ A bit far from the city but the scenery is stunning! The glacier at the summit sparkles in the sunlight, and the grasslands at the foot of the mountain are home to grazing cattle and sheep in summer. No need to hike—just drive to the viewing platform. Every photo you take looks like wallpaper. The air smells of fresh grass and earth. 6. Tuan Cheng Folk Street 🧶 Like a small maze of earth-toned houses with round domed roofs. The alleys have handmade copper shops where craftsmen clang copper pots with crisp sounds. There are also shops selling ethnic musical instruments. The sound of the dutar is especially beautiful, and you can’t help but stop and listen. At dusk, the lights on every rooftop glow warmly, casting a golden hue on the earthen walls, like a fairy-tale town. Must-eat: 6 flavors you won’t forget 1. Roasted buns 🍘 Hotan’s roasted buns are unique, with very thin dough filled with diced lamb and onions. They’re baked golden and crispy. One bite causes crumbs to fall and juicy meat to flow out. Eat them hot! The “Maimaiti Roasted Buns” stall at the Grand Bazaar entrance is worth the line. The buns are so hot fresh from the oven your hands shake, but you can’t stop stuffing them in your mouth. 2. Naan pit lamb skewers 🍢 Lamb roasted in a naan pit, with a perfect balance of fat and lean meat, crispy outside and tender inside. Sprinkled with salt and cumin, it’s mouthwatering. Each skewer is about the size of a fist. Eat it with freshly baked naan for the ultimate carb and meat delight. The owner will ask if you want it spicy. If you like heat, definitely add chili—it gets more flavorful the more you chew. 3. Handmade ice cream 🥛 Not overly sweet, with a rich milky flavor topped with raisins and crushed pistachios. The “Guzaili Ice Cream” on the old street serves it in traditional copper bowls. It’s icy cold, refreshing and thirst-quenching. A bowl in summer cools you from head to toe—pure comfort! 4. Pomegranate juice 🍹 Hotan’s pomegranates are large and sweet. Freshly squeezed juice is deep red, with a perfect balance of sweet and tart, no additives. A cup costs 10 yuan in the Grand Bazaar. The vendor fills it to the brim. After drinking, your lips turn red like you’ve applied lipstick. 5. Maltose candy 🍬 Similar to taffy but chewier, with sesame and walnut pieces inside. Sweet but not cloying. It’s great as a snack or a gift. At “Abula Maltose” in the old town, the owner pulls the candy on the spot, watching it change from white to light brown—very entertaining. 6. Roasted eggs 🥚 A must-try at the Grand Bazaar! They have chicken, duck, goose, and even ostrich eggs. The half-cooked eggs have tender whites and slightly runny yolks. Sprinkle some salt for a unique taste. The brave can try ostrich eggs, which can feed several people. Remember to ask the vendor to crack it open for you. Tips: Details to keep in mind Transportation: Taxi starting fare is 5 yuan within the city. Trips to the Grand Bazaar or Tuan Cheng cost under 10 yuan. For Niya Ruins and Muztagh Ata, you can share a ride from the bus station for 50–80 yuan per person, which is cheaper than private hire. Drivers often share stories along the way. Language: Most locals speak Uyghur, but learning a few phrases like “hello (yaxshi),” “thank you (rehmet),” and “how much (qancha)” will make vendors friendlier. Most shops and restaurants have Chinese signs, so communication is easy. Best time to visit: September to October! Pomegranates, walnuts, and grapes are ripe, and the streets are filled with fruit aromas. The weather is mild, around 20 degrees during the day—very comfortable with just a light jacket. Shopping: Bargain at the Grand Bazaar, especially for carpets and copperware. Ask the price first, then offer half, and negotiate slowly. Vendors won’t get upset. Buy Hotan jade only from reputable stores, not from street vendors, to avoid scams. Clothing: Hotan has a big temperature difference between day and night. Even in summer, bring a light jacket as mornings and evenings can be cool. After 5 days in Hotan, I still felt time wasn’t enough. Mornings eating hot hand-pulled noodles in the alleys, afternoons exploring and snacking at the Grand Bazaar, afternoons daydreaming under the walnut tree, and evenings watching the lights come on in Tuan Cheng… this slow pace can’t be experienced on a tour. For your first visit, go solo. Hotan will surprise you.

I never thought that I would enter Xinjiang for the second time so soon The wind in southern Xinjiang at the end of March is really sunny and sunny, and the sky is clear. From Shanghai Pudong → Lanzhou transfer → Hotan The whole journey is nearly 5000 kilometers and the flight time is 7 hours 1️⃣✈️ Lanzhou transfer surprise I got super delicious glutinous yogurt + milk skin yogurt at the airport. Sweet and sour, directly cure flight fatigue, recommended! 2️⃣ Arrive in Wada on time at 2:20 pm, the temperature is 20°C, super warm! Wada Airport is not big, but the wind is really strong. That’s the advantage of no check-in: 10 minutes extremely fast out of the gate, too cool 3️⃣🏨 Accommodation Super Surprise | Hotan Hilton Friends I didn't know the hotel has free shuttle, so I took a taxi. It's 11 kilometers from the airport, the fare is only 22 yuan, which is super high value for money. The hotel also helped upgrade the deluxe room! Rooms 40-50m2, super large and super comfortable, breakfast was good 4️⃣🏛️ Wada Museum | Highly recommended! No appointment required! Enter directly! There are also Kunlun culture, Western Queen Mother culture... This land really hides too much mystery and thickness 🏘️ Temporary diversion · Tuancheng Originally wanted to go to the ancient city of Yotgan, but not enough time. Went to Tuancheng nearby, small and quiet. There are very few people in the off-season, the light is soft in the evening. Casual photography has a sense of border town atmosphere. No crowding, no waiting, free to take photos 🍜 A little regret on the first day Departure at 6:30am, 6 hour flight I was really sick to my stomach, so I didn't go to Wada Night Market. I can only go back to the hotel and rest early. I'll keep it for my next visit The first day was a bit exhausting, a bit regretful though. But more of a surprise and happiness Southern Xinjiang is really worth coming again and again.

Some people say that visiting Kashgar is enough to experience southern Xinjiang? It wasn't until I drank my third cup of Fu brick tea in an old teahouse in Hotan that I discovered this small city, nourished by the snowmelt of the Kunlun Mountains, holds surprises more gentle and refined than jade. Here, there's no overly commercialized hustle and bustle, only the leisurely pace of life of the Uyghur people, and street food that makes your taste buds dance. Every snapshot is a picture of rich exotic charm. 🌵 Must-see: 1. Niya Ruins A desert ancient city even more mysterious than Loulan. Walking before the ruins of thousand-year-old pagodas, even the wind seems to tell stories of the Silk Road. Remember to wear comfortable shoes and follow a guide along a fixed route to see well-preserved wooden slips and pottery jars. 2. Hotan Museum It houses a replica of the inscription "Five Stars Rise in the East, Benefiting China" (the original is in the National Museum of China), but the Hotan documents and painted coffins in the museum are truly breathtaking. If you go at 3 pm, you can even catch a free guided tour. 3. Taklamakan Desert (Hotan Section) Get a desert starry sky without going to the Taklamakan! We recommend visiting the area near the Hotan River Bridge. At dusk, the sand dunes turn golden-red, and at night, lying on the sand and counting stars is 10 times brighter than in the city. 4. Hotan Old City More primitive than Kashgar Old City! Wandering through the alleys around the Imam Asmu Mazar, you'll see elderly people sitting in front of their mud-brick houses making naan bread, children chasing pigeons, and occasionally, you might even encounter folk artists playing the dandutar. 5. Atlas Silk Workshop Watch Uyghur aunties use traditional tie-dyeing techniques to make silk; the colors look like a spilled palette. You can buy small pieces of fabric to use as scarves; for 30-50 yuan, you can take home a unique pattern. 6. Hotan Night Market (Unity Square Branch) It only gets lively around 8 pm! Sitting on a small stool, enjoying roasted eggs and pomegranate juice, listening to the live music from the nearby stalls, you'll experience the vibrant night market culture. 🍢 Must-Try: 7 Guaranteed Delicious Foods 1. Baked Buns Freshly baked buns have a crispy crust that crumbles easily. The lamb filling is infused with the aroma of onions. Two buns for 5 yuan. We recommend the old shops in the alleys of the old town; the ones with the longest queues among locals are the best. 2. Handmade Ice Cream Ice cream made using traditional methods has a rich, creamy flavor that's almost sticky! Topped with almond flakes and raisins, a large bowl costs 5 yuan. A bite on a hot afternoon is incredibly comforting. 3. Roasted Lamb in a Naan Pit Lamb chunks are roasted in a naan pit until crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Served with freshly baked sesame naan, a bite of meat followed by a bite of naan is so delicious you'll want to lick your fingers. 4. **Sesame Candy** A specialty dessert from Hotan, made with maltose and walnuts. It's stretched into thin, golden threads, sweet but not cloying. A large bag costs only 10 yuan. 5. **Roasted Eggs** A must-try at the night market! They offer everything from ostrich eggs to quail eggs, sprinkled with salt and cumin. The egg whites are bouncy and the yolks are creamy. For first-timers, goose eggs are recommended. 6. **Yogurt Rice Dumplings** Soak rice dumplings in homemade yogurt and drizzle with honey. Sweet, sour, and soft, they're especially appetizing in summer. A serving costs 10 yuan and is enough to fill you up. 7. **Naan** Hotan has a wide variety of naan! Rose petal jam naan, walnut naan, spicy naan—freshly baked with a wheat aroma, they stay delicious even after 3 days. Remember to store them in a cloth bag to prevent breakage. 🔖 Tips · Best season: April-May or September-October, avoiding the summer heat and winter cold. · Transportation: Flying to Hotan Airport is recommended. Taxi fares in the city center start at 5 yuan. For visiting the desert or historical sites, hiring a car is best, costing 200-300 yuan per day. · Accommodation: Stay in a guesthouse near the old town. You can experience adobe house architecture; prices are 80-150 yuan per night. You can also learn to make naan (a type of savory porridge) with the host. · Sun Protection: The UV rays are extremely strong! Hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen are essential. Drink plenty of water to prevent dryness. · Respect Customs: Remove your shoes before entering a mosque. Ask for permission before taking photos. Do not touch local people's headscarves or religious items without permission. · Shopping: Buy Hotan jade from reputable shopping malls. Most "jade" sold on the street is actually marble; it's better to buy Atlas silk or handmade carpets for a more unique experience.

Don't engage with touts on the roadside at the Jade Bazaar. The raw jade market is complex; novices should prioritize buying finished small items. 2. Do not drive alone on desert routes. Road conditions are complex; booking a regular day tour or car rental is safer. 3. Southern Xinjiang has extreme temperature differences between day and night. Wear short sleeves during the day, but always bring a light jacket for mornings and evenings. 4. The Niya Ruins are a cultural protection zone, and ordinary tourists cannot enter freely. Do not trust unofficial guides. 5. Taxis in the city are very cheap. No need to rent a car for short distances; only rent a car for suburban attractions. 🧳 Travel tips · Documents: Always carry your ID card; museums and checkpoints will check it. · Attire: Sun hat, sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen, comfortable sports shoes. Bring light-colored dresses for photos. · Transportation: Hotan Airport has direct flights, and taxi starting fares in the city are low. For suburban attractions, car rental per person is more cost-effective. · Accommodation: Prioritize staying near Tuancheng/city night market for convenient travel and dining.

✅ Hello everyone, starting with this episode, I will share my previous self-drive guide from Guangzhou to Tibet. Last year, I drove over 20,000 km in Tibet, only missing a few border valleys. The college entrance exam is over, and summer vacation is coming soon. It’s a great time for a self-drive trip from Guangzhou to Tibet. ✅ This episode starts with the Shannan route. Later, I will share self-drive guides for the Himalaya border, Ali grand loop, G216 Gaize → Minfeng, eastern Tibet, and the Everest route. ✅ Among the many self-drive routes in Tibet, the Shannan route is quite unfamiliar. Most tourists only know the Ali grand loop, which shows a lack of understanding of Tibet. In terms of natural scenery, Shannan definitely surpasses the Ali route and offers a better self-drive experience. ✅ Starting from Lhasa, driving to Cuona, you’ll see rivers, deserts, earth forests, snow mountains, sea buckthorn forests, lakes, and vast grasslands. Of course, there are also cultural sites like Yongbulakang, the Tibetan king’s tomb, and Kajiu Monastery, which I’ve shared in previous notes. ✅ This time, I’m sharing a little-known lake on the way—Gecuo. Few have heard of it, and there are no online guides about it. Gecuo’s beauty is different from other lakes. It has grasslands, and its colors change with the seasons. To me, Gecuo is a lake with rich layers of color. . 🚗【Self-drive guide】 1⃣️ From Shannan to Cuona, just follow the Qiongcuo route. Avoid the blue route as it has narrow roads. 2⃣️ Gecuo is halfway along the way, next to the Zhegu grassland. 3⃣️ Zhegu Lake looks like a large lake on the map, but it has actually dried up. 4⃣️ You need to check your border pass before entering Cuona. 5⃣️ Along the Qiongcuo route, only Cuona has accommodation options. Of course, sleeping in a camper van is more convenient. 6⃣️ Except for the 4,800 m pass, the altitude elsewhere is similar to Yamdrok Lake. . ❤️【Tips】 1⃣️ Prepare your border pass in advance. It’s easier to get now. 2⃣️ Starting from Shannan city, you’ll pass four major attractions: Yongbulakang, the Tibetan king’s tomb, Gecuo, and Narirongcuo. You can explore them in 1 or 2 days. 3⃣️ It’s recommended to acclimate to the high altitude in Lhasa or Shannan city before setting off. . 🚗【Self-drive itinerary】 D1: Lhasa → Samye → Shannan → Changzhu D2: Menzhonggang → Qiongjie → Zhegu → Cuona D3: Cuona → Quzhuomu → Cuomei → Lakang D4: Shengge → Sexiang → Cuoyu D5: Cuoyu village → Baimalin Lake → Cuoyu D6: Cuoyu → Jiejiu Lake → Cuoyu D7: Cuoyu → Zhegong three lakes → Cuoyu D8: Cuoyu village → Luozha → Pucuo north route → Dalong D9: Dalong → Pucuo lake loop → Dalong D10: Dalong → Yamdrok south route → Lunbu snow village D11: Lunbu snow village → Yamdrok north route → Lhasa . ⚠️ For more travel guides on Yunnan, Tibet, and western Sichuan, 👉 save to homepage!

Suitable for: In-depth self-driving trips, those who appreciate pristine natural environments, and those seeking off-the-beaten-path drone locations. Highlights: Large areas of wild, ancient poplars with gnarled and ancient trunks, and a forest of withered poplars that tells a story. Golden viewing period: Mid-October to early November, depending on weather conditions. Best shooting times: 7-9 am and late afternoon. ✅Hotan Tuancheng: A free, fairytale-like old town in Southern Xinjiang! A hidden gem!✨ Locally known as "Pigeon Alley," its winding, circular streets exude authentic Western Xinjiang charm. 🏡Unique Aywan Architecture | Perfect for Photos This area is a well-preserved cluster of traditional Uyghur residences in Xinjiang, with over 600 years of history. Warm yellow earthen mosaic brick walls, blue-green carved wooden doors, and colorful arched windows create a stunning night view. The streets radiate outwards from the central square, like a maze of alleys, offering surprises at every turn. 📸Must-Visit Photo Spots After the lights come on at night, the entire street resembles a scene from One Thousand and One Nights; the high vantage point observation deck offers a panoramic view of the entire old town illuminated. West District Intangible Cultural Heritage Alley. ✅Atlas Silk Workshop|A Thousand-Year-Old Rainbow Intangible Cultural Heritage Hidden in the Old Town✨ Atlas silk, meaning tie-dyed silk in Uyghur, is one of the three treasures of Hotan, a national intangible cultural heritage, and is known as a "living fossil of the Silk Road." Its production process is completely opposite to ordinary silk: the silk threads are dyed first, then the fabric is woven, resulting in unique gradient patterns; no two pieces of fabric are exactly alike. Visiting the entire production process and interacting with the master craftsmen is both interesting and meaningful. ✅Hotan Night Market Hotan has an old night market and a new night market. The old night market, located next to Quanhu Park on Renmin West Road, retains the authentic Western Region atmosphere. Many locals come to check it out. The Western Region snacks are very complete; the most memorable item is the ostrich egg, which is enormous. The new night market is located on Achardong Road, behind the Kunlun Lake Park. It's twice the size of the old night market and features exciting song and dance performances and various talent shows every night, attracting many visitors. Both night markets have their own unique charm; if you have enough time, you can visit both. Hotan is a place you'll want to visit again and again. Why don't you go?
