There is currently a cultural relic restoration project underway on the cliff, and you can see scaffolding. It is a rare place where you can see a grotto relic conservation site in person. The entire scenic area has few visitors. The ancient temple hall, the archway, the poplar-lined paths, and the loess mountains paired with traditional Chinese architecture are full of the unique, profound sense of history of the Northwest. ⚠️Important reminder: The cliff soil is loose, and there are warning signs for landslides and falling rocks. The speed limit on this section is 60 km/h. Don't speed; herdsmen's cattle and sheep cross the road at any time. You can't afford the damage, and it's not worth the risk. 📍 08:15 Biandukou Observation Deck (Stop 1) After a 45-minute drive, you'll reach the Biandukou Observation Deck. This is when there are the fewest people and the best light. Park the car and climb up. The tens of thousands of acres of flower fields shimmer with gold in the morning light. Take a few photos and leave; don't stay for more than 20 minutes. 📍 11:30 Epu Ancient Town (Stop 4: Lunch) After crossing the pass, drive for another 20 minutes to reach Epu Ancient Town. This was an important post station on the ancient Silk Road, and there are still ruins of the ancient city wall. The town isn't big, but there are a few restaurants where you can eat. You can walk up the ancient city wall. The rammed earth walls have stood for hundreds of years through wind and rain. Standing on top, you can see the entire Epu River Valley. It's very windy, so watch your hat. 📍 13:00 Jingyangling Mountain Pass (Stop 5) Continue south from Epu, passing Jingyangling Mountain Pass at an altitude of 3,767 meters. This pass is more open than Eboling, with vast grasslands along the road where you can often see herdsmen's yurts and herds of cattle and sheep. If you have time, you can sit on the roadside grassland for a while. Do nothing but watch the shadows cast by the clouds on the snow-capped mountains move slowly. This feeling of "wasting time" is something you can never experience in the city. 📍 14:30 Return or continue The essence of the Minle section ends here. If you have time, you can continue south—it's 2 hours to Menyuan to see the rapeseed flowers and 3 hours to Xining. If you are doing a day trip, turn around here and head back to Minle; you can get back to the county by around 5:00 PM. 🚙 Road trip practical information Vehicle requirements: A standard sedan is perfectly fine. The whole route is paved with no rough roads. However, if you want to go deep into the grasslands on unpaved roads, an SUV is recommended. Gas stations: Fill up in Minle County. There are no gas stations between Biandukou and Epu. There is one in Epu, but it often runs out of gas, so it's recommended to fill up in the county before setting off. Mobile signal: There is 4G in the county and Biandukou, but basically no signal in the canyons and mountain passes. Download offline maps in advance. Best season: July–August for flower fields, late September–early October for autumn colors. Winter snow scenery is beautiful, but some sections may be closed, so check road conditions before setting off. Costs: No tolls for the entire route, no admission fees (the observation deck is free). Gas costs are about 150 yuan round trip. You can enjoy a day for about 50 yuan per person. 💡 Tips from an experienced driver · The speed limit changes frequently throughout the route: 60 km/h in the county, 40 km/h on mountain roads, 30 km/h at mountain passes. Push open the back door, and you're in the fields; you can see the outline of the Qilian Mountains in the distance. The room is in a minimalist Northwest style, with local photography hanging on the walls. The owner is an outdoor enthusiast, and there are hand-drawn maps of various hiking routes on the table.
