One of my favourite foods in Uzbekistan is non (naan). It’s fresh, delicious, affordable, and perfect for road trips because it stays good for days. Throughout my trip, a plain non usually cost around 5,000 UZS (about US$0.40–0.50). Those with onion, dill, minced meat, or other fillings were typically 8,000–12,000 UZS. So when I visited Oloy Dehqon Bozori (Alay Bazaar) in Tashkent, I happily bought a few different flavours before the market closed. The vendor couldn’t speak English, and we couldn’t speak Uzbek or Russian. Since they accepted QR payment, we simply scanned, paid, and left. It wasn’t until I got back to the hotel that I checked my banking app… 190,000 UZS (around US$16)! For just a few pieces of non. I honestly don’t know whether it was a communication mistake, the wrong amount entered, or whether I was overcharged because I was a tourist. Unfortunately, by then it was too late to go back. It was a good reminder that even in places where most shoppers are locals, it’s still worth confirming the price before paying—especially when there’s a language barrier. 🚃 Traveling across Uzbekistan by overnight train! AI strongly warned me, saying, “Don’t book the cheapest open sleeper (Platzkart)! It’ll be noisy and uncomfortable!” But honestly? Choosing the Platzkart turned out to be the right decision 👏 After flying on a cramped air flight, simply being able to stretch out and sleep felt luxurious ✨ The other passengers were surprisingly quiet, and for only about $14, it felt like traveling in business class 😆 · -- 🛏 My tip: choose the lower berth I don’t recommend the upper berth 🙅♀️ There’s no ladder, so climbing up is harder than it looks. Also, because there’s luggage storage above the bed, you have to crouch whenever you sit up. The lower berth is much more comfortable—you get easier access and even a small table. If you're traveling in summer, choose a carriage labeled 2U, 1L, or 1A, as these are generally equipped with air conditioning. Keep in mind that the train assigned on the day may differ, and occasionally the air conditioning may not work even if it is listed. · -- 🍵 Tea and hot water onboard Our table came with green tea and black tea, and there was a hot water dispenser in the corridor ✨ A small touch, but it made the overnight journey much more enjoyable. If you can choose your side, I’d recommend the north-facing side, as the south-facing side gets strong sunlight after sunrise ☀️ · -- 🚻 One important thing to know The toilets are locked for about 20 minutes before and after stopping at stations. I learned this the hard way when I found the door locked 😅 So make sure to use the restroom before the train arrives at a station! Uzbekistan’s Platzkart was far more comfortable than I expected. A great way to experience the country by rail 🚃✨

When Genghis Khan came out of Mongolia it was in anger. That anger was directed at the Khwarzim empire's town of Bukhara. He destroyed the whole town and razed it to the ground. However one amazing structure was the Kalon Minar which had been built earlier by the Kara Khanids. It impressed Genghis Khan so much because of its height (it was most likely one of the tallest towers around at that time) that he spared it. Since then this spectacular tower has withstood earthquakes invasions, occupations and much more. Today it still stands in Bukhara as one of its oldest buildings . It is still impressive and when coupled with the history of Bukhara it is well worth a visit. Marvel at its height by standing in the same place Genghis Khan must have stood. I came here with no expectations, thinking we'd spend the night and then continue on to Samarkand. But it wasn't to be! The capital of Uzbekistan surprised us in a good way, and we extended our hotel stay for a few more nights! 😁 Beautiful, modern, green, delicious, and nutritious! 👍🏻 When you go to China, you expect to be amazed, and you are. In Vietnam or Thailand, you expect to enjoy nature and the sea, and you do. But in Tashkent, you expect nothing, and bam! After much research, I found that Happy Bird building in Samarkand has the best selection and the best price as well Happy Bird is a collection of artists who display and sell their artworks, you can find magnets, suzani embroidery, silver chasing plates, carpets, and the list goes on! I found these styles of magnet being sold in lots of places, but the details are not as sharp, or the painting is not done on wood but rather on cardboard instead. Other places quoted me 100-150k som for 1 small magnet, but this artist is selling for only 30-75k per piece depending on the size. After a bit of haggling, I managed to get 5 pieces for 200k, I was so happy! He even noticed a small scratch on one of the pieces and exchanged a better one for me 🥹 Then, he packaged each piece carefully before handing over, I can really feel that he's passionate and proud of his work. Before our trip, we figured Tashkent was just a layover city—a place to kill a day before heading to Samarkand and Bukhara. But a few hours in, we realized how completely wrong we were. Tashkent is nothing like the image most people have in mind. Here, modern skyscrapers stand side-by-side with ancient mosques, and Soviet architecture blends with futuristic neighborhoods. The wide, green avenues make it feel like the city was purpose-built for comfortable living. One of our biggest highlights was Tashkent City. It’s a brand-new business district featuring skyscrapers, a massive park, and an artificial lake. Every evening, hundreds of people gather to watch the dancing fountains. Water shoots dozens of meters into the air, perfectly timed to music and dazzling lights—and it’s all completely free. Even if you've seen similar shows elsewhere, the vibe here is truly something special. Just a stone's throw away is the memorial for the Pakhtakor football club. At first glance, it’s just a monument, but it represents one of the most tragic chapters in Soviet sports history. On August 11, 1979, the plane carrying the team to a USSR championship match collided mid-air with another passenger jet over Ukraine. All 178 people on board perished, including 17 Pakhtakor players and staff members. It remains the only time in global football history that an entire top-tier team was wiped out in an aviation disaster. After the tragedy, the club had to be rebuilt from scratch, with other Soviet teams stepping up to donate their own players to keep Pakhtakor alive. Another amazing discovery was the Tashkent Metro. I saw it in the recommendations and couldn't resist! Especially since we were arriving late and wanted a hotel close to the airport. And the breakfast completely won me over! There's a huge selection of high-quality meat dishes, fresh greens, and cheeses. Breakfast is always our main meal of the day, but even we couldn't try everything here! The croissants stole my heart. It genuinely feels like they have a baker from Paris. I mean it! Even plain, without any fillings, they're an absolute delight. But paired with smoked salmon… I was ready to beg for mercy 😂 If you're in the mood for something exotic, grab a teapot and some pialas (traditional bowls). Drink your tea like the locals do, paired with sweets, nuts, and raisins. If you've got a real sweet tooth, they have pastries, sweet buns, stuffed crepes, and macarons.
