I love bridges and have crossed quite a few, but this one is by far the most thrilling. The gaps between the floor planks are huge. Beneath you flows a beautiful river. It’s terrifying, yet strangely enough, it’s a bridge you just have to cross. Iya no Kazurabashi is a traditional bridge woven from hardy kiwi vines that grow wild in the mountains. In the past, it was a vital lifeline for locals to cross the deep gorge. It really moved me to think about the profound ingenuity of ancient people, using local materials to build a bridge that sustained their way of life. There’s also a legend that the fleeing warriors of the Heike clan built it this way, so they could easily cut it down in an emergency to escape their pursuers. When you cross with that history in mind, it becomes more than just a tourist attraction— it becomes a place where you can truly feel the wisdom and the lives of the people who inhabited this land. The swaying bridge. The empty space beneath your feet. The rushing river below. The thick vines you cling to. It was scary, but I’m so glad I crossed it. By going first thing in the morning, there were hardly any people, so I could take my time crossing, and I got some photos where it looks like I had the whole bridge to myself. It was also great to really feel the texture of the vines in my hands. However, while the morning light is beautiful, it casts strong shadows, so your photos might turn out a bit dark. Biwa Waterfall is also nearby, making it a great spot to stroll to along with the Kazurabashi. There are food stalls too, where I enjoyed local Iya specialties like dekomawashi and grilled dango. It’s the perfect place for a quick break after making it across the bridge. A rare bridge where you can experience a sense of seclusion, rich history, and pure thrill all at once.
