5 Kathmandu Monasteries You Must See
#localdiscoveries
Kathmandu has plenty of famous sights, but some of my favourite discoveries were the monasteries I came across while simply wandering. If you want something quieter than the usual tourist stops, save these.
· Kopan Monastery - Kapan
Fee: Free; donations welcome
Rule: Dress modestly, remove shoes inside, keep quiet and ask before taking photos.
· Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling - Boudha
Fee: Free
Rule: Keep voices low, dress respectfully and follow signs around prayer areas.
· Shechen Monastery - Boudha
Fee: Free
Rule: Shoes off in sacred areas; avoid interrupting prayers and check before photographing.
· Benchen Monastery - Swayambhu
Fee: Free
Rule: Modest clothing, quiet behaviour and respectful photography.
· Druk Amitabha Monastery - Nagarjun
Fee: Free/donation appreciated
Rule: Respect prayer spaces and avoid disturbing worshippers.
What I loved most? These places don't feel like you’re ticking another attraction off a list. You can slow down, hear the prayer wheels, notice the architecture and just wander.
Have you discovered a monastery in Kathmandu by accident? Drop the name below, I’d genuinely love to add more hidden finds to my list.

Stunning Location and Warm Hospitality
Amazing location on the hill with a breathtaking view of the city, and very close to Monkey Temple. The family was incredibly welcoming and friendly, going above and beyond to make me feel included and offering advice to ensure my trip went smoothly. Since it was the off-peak season, I had the dorm room all to myself, which was fantastic. Highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Kathmandu!
Excellent Stay with Fantastic Service
A very good experience. The location is fantastic with a wonderful view. The staff is very friendly, family-run, and they assist with everything from driving to laundry and even shopping for clothes. The rooms and hostel are very clean, with lots of plants, unique decorations, and a very peaceful ambiance. It has a great atmosphere overall. Having traveled for six years, this was the best experience I’ve had. I give it 10/10 points.
Fantastic Yoga Experience at NYH
Attending NYH has been an incredible experience for me! The teachers were passionate and welcoming, and their enthusiastic approach really benefited me. I particularly want to thank Niraj—his early morning yoga classes were a highlight. As a beginner, I enrolled in a 3-day course, and the lessons will undoubtedly help me explore yoga and meditation further. I’ll truly miss the mealtime conversations with fellow students, where I got to interact with people from diverse backgrounds and made some wonderful friends.
The Home is situated at an amazing location, offering a bird's-eye view of the city from the balconies and rooftop. The cityscape at night is absolutely stunning. Additionally, it’s only a five-minute walk to the Nagarjuna Reserve Forest, perfect for day hikes during off-days. Students enrolled in the 200hr or 500hr courses usually have Sundays free, with occasional outdoor activities planned for extra fun.
The accommodations were clean, and the staff members were incredibly friendly and supportive throughout my stay. Special thanks to Shanti for her warmth and hospitality, which truly made it feel like home. For anyone journeying to Nepal in search of spiritual freedom, I strongly recommend considering NYH.
A Fantastic Stay at The Sparkling Turtle
The Sparkling Turtle has been an incredible choice for my vacation in Kathmandu, Nepal. Operated by the owner, the hostel offers a warm and inviting atmosphere, with everyone being friendly, helpful, courteous, and kind. Every question or request for assistance has been handled with utmost care and dedication. I have stayed here for a month, and each day has been absolutely amazing.
Challenging Hike with Mixed Experiences
The uphill hike is quite steep but offers a wonderful escape from the city's hustle and bustle. Unfortunately, the trail is littered with trash, which detracts from the experience. Hiring a local guide costs $2000, yet the guide's assistance wasn't very useful. Moreover, finding a taxi back home from the park proved to be difficult.
Best Home-Like Hostel in Kathmandu
This was honestly the best hostel I stayed at in Kathmandu. It truly felt like a home away from home. The hostel is family-run, and they genuinely make you feel like part of it. Traveling solo, I appreciated how much effort they put into making me feel comfortable and safe. They even checked on me once when I didn’t follow my usual routine, which was thoughtful.
Breakfast on the rooftop terrace every morning was a highlight. The food was exactly how I like it—delicious, fresh, and nutritious. The rooms were very clean, and since the hostel is relatively new, everything felt fresh and well-maintained.
The location is fantastic—close to the Monkey Temple but in a quieter, less touristy area. The property felt very secure with a gate at the entrance. They also arranged my bus to Pokhara and accompanied me early in the morning to ensure I got on the bus. They were always helpful and welcoming.
All of this was offered at a very affordable price. I would absolutely stay here again. 10 out of 10.
A Warm Welcome That Feels Like Home
Ajeet treated me like family. Just one conversation with him and you’ll feel like part of the family. His respect for traditional values is truly inspiring, with the belief that guests should be treated like gods. Even being on the other side of the world, I genuinely felt at home. Thank you so much, Ajeet and family, for everything you've done for me, especially taking the time to teach me your homemade dal bhat recipe and sharing supper together.
Warm Hospitality and Reliable Stay in Kathmandu
I stayed at Sparkling Turtle Hostel for 14 days in a private room and had a wonderful experience. The owners and their family are truly welcoming and hospitable — they genuinely make you feel at home. The place is very safe, clean, and well-maintained. The location is fantastic, offering easy access to everything in Kathmandu, while remaining calm and comfortable. A standout feature for me was the internet: fast and reliable, making it ideal for remote work. This visit was especially memorable since I first stayed here 11 years ago, and returning last month felt just as special. The warmth, quality, and atmosphere have consistently remained excellent over the years. Highly recommended for solo travelers, long stays, and digital nomads seeking a friendly and dependable spot in Kathmandu.
Cozy Stay with Stunning Views in Kathmandu
My partner and I decided to spend a five-day winter getaway in Kathmandu, Nepal, and chose The Sparkling Turtle Backpackers Hostel for our stay. We were initially drawn to the balcony views of the mountains and city, and it fully lived up to our expectations—the view was breathtaking. The hostel itself is a large, beautiful, and clean house run by a warm and welcoming host and his family.
The breakfasts were delicious, and the host was incredibly helpful with any queries. The location is excellent, and the level of service was top-notch. The rooms were cozy and spotless, featuring extremely comfortable beds and wonderfully warm blankets. The whole place had a very soothing and peaceful vibe, and they even have rooftop access with a panoramic view of the mountains and the entire city!
A big thank-you for such a relaxing stay and for the kindness in making our short vacation special! I highly recommend The Sparkling Turtle Backpackers Hostel, and we’ll definitely visit again!
Ichangu Narayan Temple, a famous temple in Nepal, is a great place for shopping, vacations, and other leisure activities.
#discoversaudimoment Nepal is a world-renowned tourist destination, attracting visitors from all over the world. Today, I recommend a temple: Ichangu Narayan Temple. This temple is located on a mountain, and many students attend classes there. It was raining heavily when I went to listen, but I couldn't understand a word; I couldn't tell if they were speaking Tibetan or Nepali. From the top, you can see a panoramic view of the surrounding villages. The rain was getting heavier. It's a great place for shopping, experiencing local customs, and a relaxing vacation.
Address: Bagmati, Kathmandu, Nepal
Opening Hours: All day
2 hrs hike from Kathmandu to Jamacho. worth the view
Beautiful Kathmandu night view with Swayambhunath temple.
Enjoying late afternoon coffee.
ชวนไปเล่น sky glass wing คุณกล้าหรือไม่ในเนปาล
Riding the Sky Glass Swing in Nepal is a thrilling experience perfect for adventure seekers who aren't afraid of heights. I highly recommend it!
A staff member will push the swing up high from the ground and swing it forward at breakneck speed, making your heart skip a beat. It's a sure-win moment. Not because of the speed, but because of the lack of safety measures. I was afraid I'd actually fall off the cliff, lol. It's not expensive at all. I'm entrusting my life for just 3 short minutes. It's quite scary. Or, you can swing in a group with friends.
