Burgundy travel guide and discussion

The honest truth❗️ France is super romantic, but I really don't recommend just showing up in September–October 😭 I've been to France 3 times and have made mistakes in every season! Let's start with the most honest conclusion: France is beautiful all year round, but September–October is an awkward period where it's easiest to feel "let down." Many people are lured by online photos of yellow sycamore leaves in Paris or the gentle autumn days in the South of France, only to feel emo the moment they land! No hype, no bashing—this post is based on the real experiences of an average traveler. If you're planning to head to France in the second half of the year, be sure to read this before you decide! 🇫🇷 🌟 Let's be fair: It's not that France is bad in September–October; it just "depends on the person." If you're a traveler who prefers slow travel, visiting artsy shops, wine tasting, and exploring old towns, these 2 months actually have unique advantages: ✅ Perfectly avoid the crowds and say goodbye to the summer rush July–August is peak season in France; the Eiffel Tower, Louvre, Champs-Élysées, and Nice beaches are packed, and waiting in line for 2 hours to play for 10 minutes is the norm. Starting in September, tourist numbers drop off a cliff, and by October, it's fully in the off-season transition. You won't have to squeeze through crowds to visit museums, walk through old town streets, or stroll along the Seine. It's easy to take photos without people in them and enjoy an immersive, relaxed French vibe. ✅ Extremely comfortable temperatures, no more suffering from scorching heat The South of France in midsummer can be unbearably hot, with temperatures over 35℃+. You'll be sweating and your makeup will melt within 5 minutes of going out, making it impossible to properly explore towns or hike to see the scenery. In September–October, the average temperature is 12–24℃. It's not stuffy or dry, and the sunlight is gentle and soft. It's the peak season for French-style outfits—trench coats, knitwear, and suits look amazing in photos—and it's super comfortable for walking and shopping. ✅ Beautiful autumn filter, maximum city gentleness Starting in late September, the sycamore trees along the streets of Paris slowly turn yellow, and the Tuileries Garden, Luxembourg Gardens, and Montmartre are filled with golden-brown fallen leaves. Sunlight filters through the branches, giving all of Paris a built-in vintage movie filter. Every photo looks like a scene from a K-drama or a lazy, stylish French film. It's a gentle texture that spring and summer just can't provide. ✅ Exclusive romance of wine season, a foodie's delight September–October is the grape harvest season in Burgundy and Bordeaux! Estates open up for picking, wine tasting, and tours of the winemaking process. It's the best time of year for a vacation at a French winery—niche and high-end. Experienced travelers who know how to travel always choose this time. ❌ Major warning! Average travelers, definitely don't rush into this! The fatal flaws of September–October With so many pros, why do I still not recommend it for average tourists or first-time visitors to France? Because there are too many hidden pitfalls that can ruin your entire travel experience! 1. Unpredictable weather, sudden rainy season, photos ruined The internet only raves about the beauty of autumn in France; no one tells you that September–October is the rainy season as the seasons change! Especially in Paris, northern Normandy, and Strasbourg, overcast, cloudy, and drizzly days are the norm. There are no clear blue skies or bright sunshine like in spring and summer; the sky is often gray and foggy. Occasional sunny days are fleeting, followed by continuous light rain. The wind is super strong, and it's very humid. The cold, damp feeling is worse than just a drop in temperature. Your carefully planned outfits and makeup won't look good in photos on rainy days, and the romantic Paris you expected turns into a gray, oppressive city. The South of France is relatively better, but it also rains frequently in mid-to-late October, and the wind by the sea is fierce. You can't leisurely stroll along the coastlines of Nice or Cannes. 2. Days get shorter rapidly, effective sightseeing time cut in half This is the biggest hidden pitfall of September–October!! In summer, France has very long days; it's still bright at 10 PM, so you can spend the whole day visiting attractions and getting things done. But starting in September, it gets dark noticeably earlier. By October, dusk starts after 4 PM, and it's completely dark by 5 PM! Your effective sightseeing time per day is only about 6 hours. France has so many attractions: the Louvre, Versailles, the Seine, old towns, beaches, small towns... Your itinerary gets squeezed tight. You don't dare sleep in, and you're rushing around in the afternoon. There's no "relaxed French travel" vibe at all; you're just exhausted from rushing every day! 3. Polarized scenery, peak beauty is all offline Many people think all of France is beautiful in autumn, but they are dead wrong! ✅ France in spring/summer: Lavender and sunflower fields everywhere in the South of France, green fields, crystal-clear lakes, and deep blue seas. The whole country is vibrant and full of life—this is the "beautiful, romantic France" that everyone knows. ❌ France in September–October: The flower fields in Provence have completely finished blooming, and the fields are withered and desolate, with zero "Instagrammable" filter; Normandy, Mont Saint-Michel, and major national parks have withered vegetation, and the scenery is monotonous and dull; Only the sycamore trees in downtown Paris look good. Aside from city streetscapes, the natural scenery is basically all offline! If it's your first time in France and you want to see flower fields, blue seas, and healing countryside, you will be 100% disappointed! 4. Serious price premiums in September, very low cost-performance Many people think September is the off-season and prices are cheap, but the reality is the exact opposite! September is packed with Paris Fashion Week and various international exhibitions. Hotel and flight prices remain high, and homestays in popular areas have serious price premiums. There is absolutely no off-season value. Prices don't drop until mid-to-late October. It's basically a month where you get no beautiful scenery, no long days, and it's expensive—a total "sucker's" month to travel. 5. Many activities shut down, travel variety greatly reduced Entering autumn, many unique outdoor activities in France gradually stop operating: All water activities on the beaches of the South of France close, and open-air markets in small towns are significantly reduced; Some rural hiking trails, riverside leisure facilities, and outdoor exhibitions close periodically; Many niche "Instagrammable" spots and outdoor cafes shorten their business hours. If you want to experience a rich French vacation vibe, autumn is really far inferior to spring and summer! ✅ Ultra-precise France travel "do's and don'ts" list | Beginners can just copy this 💛 [Go for it · Golden best time: June–August] France's beauty is at its peak all year! Sunny days everywhere, very long days, flower fields everywhere, lush green vegetation, and deep blue seawater. All attractions, markets, and outdoor activities are open. Whether it's a city tour of Paris, wandering through small towns in the South of France, a beach vacation, or visiting wineries, the experience is maxed out. For your first trip to France, this is the time to choose! 💛 [First choice for niche artsy types: Late September–Early October] Only suitable for: wine tasting, visiting shops, taking photos, slow-paced Paris strolling, and in-depth artsy travelers. Not suitable for: first-time visitors, those wanting to see panoramic scenery, those rushing through an itinerary, or family vacations. 💔 [Absolute avoid period: Late October–November] Continuous rain, temperatures plummeting, desolate scenery, very short days. The travel experience completely collapses—beginners, stay away! 📍 Must-save for beginners | Classic must-visit attractions in France all year round (suitable for all 4 seasons) ▫️ Downtown Paris ✔️ Eiffel Tower: Beautiful at sunset on sunny days; the vibe is halved on cloudy days ✔️ Louvre: Can be visited indoors all year round, unaffected by weather ✔️ Seine River cruise: Summer evening breeze is legendary; autumn is cold, windy, and a poor experience ✔️ Montmartre: Autumn yellow leaves are super romantic, great for photos ▫️ Small towns in the South of France ✔️ Provence: Only recommended in summer! No flower fields in autumn, not recommended ✔️ Nice's Angel Bay, Cannes seaside: Blue seas and skies in spring/summer; windy and rainy in autumn ▫️ Classic outskirts ✔️ Palace of Versailles: Outdoor gardens are beautiful in spring/summer; vegetation is withered and average in autumn ✔️ Bordeaux/Burgundy wineries: Exclusive peak season in September–October, perfect for wine tasting ✍️ Final heartfelt summary France is truly a romantic country worth visiting for a lifetime. Spring and summer are a healing fairy tale, winter is a gentle fairy tale, only autumn is the most awkward! ✅ If it's your first time going, you want to check off the most beautiful parts of France, and you want to see blue seas, flower fields, and blue skies 👉 Definitely don't choose September–October! Prioritize June–August! ✅ If you've been to France in spring/summer, prefer a slow, artsy life, and are coming specifically for autumn scenery + red wine 👉 September–October is fine to go; it's niche, less crowded, and the vibe is maxed out. Don't blindly follow the crowd; choose the right time to encounter the most romantic France✨

Some plants do not wait for you to discover them quietly. From a distance, the first thing that catches the eye is an unexpected sea of red — vivid, luminous, almost unreal against the surrounding greens. Approaching closer, the mystery reveals itself: Berberis (barberry), its foliage glowing like scattered embers beneath the open sky. In the serene grounds of Jardin botanique de Haute‑Bretagne, this burst of crimson feels almost theatrical. Yet nature wears it effortlessly. Layer upon layer of ruby leaves shimmer in changing light, shifting between scarlet, burgundy, and deep wine tones depending on where the sun chooses to land. There is something quietly captivating about the contrast — delicate branches carrying such unapologetic color, standing among calmer shades of woodland green and garden earth. It feels less like a flower display and more like a painter suddenly choosing bold pigment after pages of softer watercolor. Moments like this remind you that botanical gardens are not only about rare species or scientific collections. Sometimes, they are simply about surprise — turning an ordinary walk into an encounter with color so vivid you stop without meaning to. 📍 Location: Upper Brittany Botanical Garden, France 🚗 How to get there: Accessible by car from Rennes; ideal as a countryside day trip 🕰️ Best time: Spring through autumn for rich foliage colors and seasonal garden displays 💡 Travel tip: Wander slowly and look beyond the flowers — some of the garden’s most striking beauty lives in leaves, textures, and unexpected bursts of foliage color. Sometimes, beauty does not bloom. Sometimes, it arrives in leaves painted the color of fire.

We stumbled upon this place purely by chance. While driving from Paris toward the Alps, a road sign caught our eye, and we figured a 30-minute leg stretch was in order. Instead, those minutes turned into hours of wandering. To this day, it remains one of the absolute highlights of our entire journey. 🏰 Like stepping into the Middle Ages Auxerre is a historic town in Burgundy, nestled along the banks of the Yonne River. It’s a tapestry of half-timbered houses with vibrant shutters, winding cobblestone alleys, and wrought-iron lanterns. Cathedral spires pierce the sky above terracotta tiled roofs. The most incredible part? It was blissfully quiet. We practically had the streets to ourselves, feeling less like tourists and more like residents of medieval France 🤍 🕰 The Clock Tower The town’s centerpiece is the 15th-century Clock Tower (Tour de l'Horloge), once a gateway to the city. Its astronomical clock features two hands: a sun indicating the hour and a blue sphere showing the phases of the moon. Beneath the dial lies a 1672 Latin inscription about the eternal cycle of time dying and being reborn. Peering through the archway reveals a striking red half-timbered house—easily one of the most photogenic spots in town. ⛪ Cathedrals you can explore · Saint-Étienne Cathedral: A Gothic masterpiece built between the 13th and 16th centuries. Admission is free, allowing you to marvel at the stained glass and soaring vaults in peace. The crypt houses rare frescoes, including a unique depiction of Christ on horseback. · Saint-Germain Abbey: Famous for its crypts containing 9th-century frescoes, which are among the oldest in all of France. 🌉 The ultimate viewpoint Cross the Paul Bert Bridge to the opposite bank of the Yonne. From there, you’ll find a postcard-perfect panorama of the river, the cathedral, and the abbey silhouetted against the old rooftops. It’s particularly breathtaking at sunset. 🍷 A bonus for wine lovers Just 20 km away lies Chablis, the heart of world-famous white Burgundy. It’s the perfect detour to stop by a local cellar for a tasting. 🏨 Staying the night If you aren't in a rush, Auxerre offers charming boutique hotels and guesthouses right in the historic center. The atmosphere becomes even more magical when the streetlights flicker on at dusk, and the morning light on the empty streets is pure serenity. 📍 Getting there Auxerre is roughly a 2-hour drive from Paris via the A6 highway, making it an ideal pitstop on your way to Burgundy or the Alps. It's the perfect break if you're driving south. Sometimes the most profound travel experiences happen completely by accident. Auxerre was exactly that kind of discovery 🤍 Have you ever made a random stop that became the highlight of your trip? 👇

I consider this to be one of the most spectacular and magical historical viewpoints in the Côte-d'Or province. The fortified town of Semur-en-Auxois is an architectural masterpiece perched on a pink granite hill. It’s a captivating collection of ancient stone buildings that celebrate the grandeur of an old frontier outpost and the timeless beauty of the Armançon River valley. With its sacred religious sites and the fascinating history of Burgundy, the atmosphere here is incredibly heartwarming and revitalizing. The cobblestone alleys and stone arch bridges are perfectly integrated into the embrace of rolling hills and lush green forests, letting you soak in the crisp, cool air—the ultimate way to relax and recharge. · The Masterpiece Highlights The highlight of this trip, popular for leisurely strolls and historical immersion, is the "pedestrian path along the water and the natural stone terraces surrounding the ancient fortress towers." Key landmarks include: · Pont Joly & The Keep: This is the iconic viewpoint from the stone arch bridge spanning the Armançon River. Looking up, you’ll see the massive cylindrical towers of the ancient fortress, their beauty reflected perfectly in the clear water below. · Pont Pinard: Another ancient stone bridge surrounded by traditional French houses adorned with lush green vines. Its classic stone structure has stood the test of time, offering a picturesque and elegant scene. · Collegiate Church of Notre-Dame (Collegiale Notre-Dame): A grand Gothic landmark standing tall in the heart of the old town. It features striking square front towers and ornate sandstone carvings, providing a stunning backdrop for photography. · Medieval Riverside Streets: Small pedestrian paths that wind along the river, flanked by ancient stone walls, terracotta tiled roofs, and classic French local shops. It’s one of the most beautiful spots in town. · Getting There Take the high-speed train (TGV) to Montbard station, then hop on a local bus (Route LR 119 or the regional bus) directly to the old town of Semur-en-Auxois, which takes about 25-30 minutes. Alternatively, you can rent a car for a road trip; it’s just a few minutes from the river crossings to the parking area in front of the town square and restaurants. The old town is vast and free to explore. The views are stunning and the clear skies are sure to impress. (A major highlight year-round is the opportunity to taste exquisite Burgundy wines and traditional slow-cooked beef in red wine sauce from local wood-fired ovens at nearby restaurants.) · Hours and Admission The riverside areas, ancient stone bridges, hillside alleys, and all external viewpoints around the town are open for strolling and photography 24 hours a day. There are no entrance fees or tickets required to explore the town (except for specific museums inside the towers or certain historic sites). · What to Wear I recommend wearing comfortable sneakers or walking shoes with good grip, as the town features uneven cobblestone streets, steep slopes, and stone stairs along the old walls. For your outfit, go with a nice coat, a light jacket, or clean, minimal tones like white, cream, or denim. These colors will make you stand out beautifully against the historic stone gates and ancient bridge structures, especially in backlit photos.

This time I followed Trip.com's "Burgundy–Franche-Comté region luxury hotels" list to stay at Château de Gilly, and it transported me straight into the scene I wanted. 🌿 A castle with a moat (now dry) — this is the European vibe. The moment you step inside, you really feel like you've moved into a castle 🏰 The hotel not only features castle architecture and decor that fit the local style, it also retains the atmosphere of a historic manor. My favorite detail is the floral wallpaper inside. Romantic and vintage, it completely matches my aesthetic. In the room, besides being comfortable, the service left a very good impression, exactly the standard you expect from a five‑star hotel. In terms of facilities, they don't feel overdone, but the pool and sauna are definitely worth trying. Especially the pool: with its classic, atmospheric setting, swimming there gives you a sense of traveling through time — highly recommended 🏊 The only downside is the closing time, which is rather early, around 7 PM. Beyond the hotel itself, what surprised me more was riding the hotel's free rental bike all the way to the vineyards. I felt like I was riding on some of the most valuable land in the world. It was quite special 🚴 A heads up: if you don't usually exercise, I recommend renting the hotel's paid electric bike, roughly €20 for half a day, because there are some uphill sections. If you want a few tips for your stay: 1. The hotel has free bikes — cycling fans should try them. If you don't exercise often, strongly consider renting an electric bike, as there are hills. 2. The pool and sauna are worth trying, so be sure to schedule time for them. 3. Nearby restaurants, shops, and gas stations close early, so plan accordingly. This stay really exceeded my expectations — a castle hotel that combines historical charm with a deep, immersive experience. If you're also looking for a castle that's truly worth staying in, this one should definitely be on your wish list 🍇

IYKYK! Having visited so many European towns, when it comes to pure romance, France truly takes the crown🌷! It's not just a cookie-cutter influencer template, but a hundred towns, each hiding ten thousand completely different vibes. I've dug up 6 hidden gem locations this time, each with a unique charm👇 🍷 Kaysersberg: A fairytale town on the Alsace Wine Route. Colorful half-timbered houses spread along the valley, with old stone bridges and castle ruins creating an incredible atmosphere, all while the scent of grapes drifts through the air as you walk. 🏰 Semur-en-Auxois: An underrated medieval secret in Burgundy. Old city walls stand along the riverbank, so quiet you can hear the sound of time flowing by. ⛪ Rouen: The soulful old city of Normandy. The Great Clock street and Gothic churches carry a deep sense of history, with countless surprising corners hidden throughout the streets. 🌿 Argenton-sur-Creuse: A river runs through the town, with greenery wrapping around stone houses. It's a slow-paced gem perfect for daydreaming all day long. 🌀 Eguisheim: A super unique circular town with concentric streets. Not far from Colmar, the winding alleys offer a view at every turn, all gently embraced by vineyards. 🏔️ Foix: A mountain town in the south. An ancient castle on the hilltop overlooks the entire city, carrying a wild tenderness where nature and history intertwine. No need to rush around checking off tourist spots. The right way to experience French towns is: walk slowly, lie back and soak up the sun, and find a small shop to enjoy some authentic local food🍞. Let your eyes take in every beam of light and the tenderness of every brick and tile; many beautiful things don't need extra words. 📌 Tips: The drive between towns can be long, so renting a car or staying in segments is recommended. Try to avoid the midday crowds; early morning and dusk are the best times for photos.

Every time I eat vegetarian, I feel the world around me is so sparse, yet so vast. A person's lifestyle is, in fact, the way they view the world. I eat vegan at least twice a month. Adding is an instinct; subtracting is a skill. I am very happy that this time at Lanzhai, I found that the team has evolved again. The menu structure and ingredient combinations have become purer. The theme for this season, "Autumn Order, Winter Soil," draws on the ancient dietary wisdom of autumn harvests, storage, and preserving flavors through fermentation. The entire vegetarian feast transforms local fruits, vegetables, wild mushrooms, and grains into something gentle. The meal began with a Crémant de Bourgogne from Janisson. Coming from a Champagne family, the Janisson has fresh red fruit aromas and balanced acidity, perfectly complementing the two appetizers featuring northern and southern flavors. Hunan-style fried chili paste is served on a crispy shell, enhanced by the fragrance of agastache, with crushed macadamia nuts on top. Lingnan green olives are transformed into an Indian gooseberry jelly, while verbena and lemon balm are infused into herbal olive oil, leaving a lingering, refreshing sweetness. A single tomato, used in multiple ways. Roasted tomato crisps are layered with concentrated tomato paste and roasted bell peppers, with a base soup infused with snow buds and lily bulbs, offering a warm, sweet-and-sour flavor. The wine switches to a Dönnhoff Riesling; the winemaker is not bound by the VDP classification system, and its lively white flower and citrus aromas pair well with several vegetable dishes. The three pumpkin preparations each have their own charm: crispy roasted pumpkin, pumpkin flower wrapped around spaghetti squash, and smoky ginger-handle pumpkin, perfectly capturing the essence of autumn storage. I rarely eat rice, but I couldn't resist at Lanzhai. The chef selected eight types of heirloom fragrant glutinous rice from different altitudes. This type of ancient rice has a low yield, and with only a light seasoning of ginger and soy sauce, the natural aroma of the grain is fully released. Paired with a Gewürztraminer (an aromatic Italian grape), it surprisingly brought out notes of ginger flower. Matsutake mushroom clear soup is served in a cup, with shredded Stropharia mushrooms mixed with snow lotus seeds, creating a smooth texture and a clear, distant mushroom aroma. Thin slices of celeriac are served with black truffle, and the house-made fermented tofu sauce releases a deep, fermented aroma; green eggplant is wrapped in rice paper with a filling, combined with hand-fermented chili, perilla, and fermented black beans, while creamy mashed potatoes perfectly buffer the mild spice. Salt-baked lily bulbs are soaked in red yeast rice and jasmine wine, offering a sweet and soothing taste. The squash is carved into the shape of tree rings, with yellow and green slices layered around each other, while the mushroom puree and jicama slices underneath highlight a simple, rustic charm. A Central Otago Pinot Noir from New Zealand follows, with the cool climate imparting rich fruit aromas and a hint of smokiness to the wine, pairing perfectly with the mushrooms and vegetables. The dessert is a hot sweet potato dish inspired by the Cantonese technique of deep-frying oil cakes, with nuts and sesame hidden inside, implying the philosophical thought of life lying dormant and waiting to emerge. It is served with warm, mellow tofu pudding with old-fashioned sugar. The physalis sorbet is crisp and refreshing, with jasmine and prickly pear jam adding a subtle floral fragrance. The final dessert platter gathers qingtuan, red bean jelly, aiwowo, and matcha mung bean date paste cakes, bringing a slow, sweet finish from both the north and south. I like Chef Dai Jun's cooking.

Who would have thought! Hidden in a Burgundy wine town is a 600-year-old medieval landmark that still stuns the world✨, and many people visiting France accidentally miss it! It is the famous Hospices de Beaune (also known as the Hôtel-Dieu de Beaune), built in 1443, originally a charity hospital that treated the poor for free. Its most famous feature is the highly recognizable colorful glazed tile roof, with red, yellow, green, and black forming beautiful geometric patterns that sparkle in the sunlight. It is also a filming location for the classic movie "La Grande Vadrouille"📽️. Walking into the cobblestone courtyard, the half-timbered cloisters and exquisitely carved pillars create an incredible atmosphere. The 50-meter-long ancient ward retains its original bed arrangements, and the pharmacy still houses medicine jars and tools from hundreds of years ago. The museum's crown jewel is the Renaissance masterpiece "The Last Judgment," with details so stunning they leave you speechless. What's even more special is that this is also a legendary wine estate! Every November, it hosts the world's oldest charity wine auction, with all proceeds going to charity. It's a perfect blend of history and the aroma of wine🍷. 📌Tips: We recommend renting a Chinese audio guide to better understand the stories. The atmosphere inside is solemn, so please visit quietly and avoid making noise. After your visit, you can take a walk in the old town of Beaune and taste authentic Burgundy wine. When you come to Burgundy, France, don't just focus on the wine! This historic site with its shimmering roof is truly worth a special trip🌿.

In Lyon, the best way to experience the city is by immersing yourself in the Old Town, Fourvière Hill, the Presqu’île, the local food scene, and world-class museums. ① Vieux Lyon: This is one of Lyon's most iconic districts. Rather than focusing on a single sight, the magic lies in wandering through the entire neighborhood. Here is a suggested walking route: Saint-Jean Cathedral → Rue Saint-Jean → Traboules → Rue du Bœuf → Place du Change → Saône Riverbank You’ll encounter stunning 15th to 17th-century architecture featuring vibrant yellow, orange, and pink facades. Be sure to look for the "Traboules"—unique hidden passageways used by silk merchants in the past to navigate between streets, stay dry, and transport their delicate goods. ② Fourvière Hill: This area offers three distinct experiences: ⛪️ Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière While the exterior is majestic, the interior is truly breathtaking. It features incredibly ornate mosaic decorations that offer a completely different atmosphere compared to Notre-Dame de Paris or typical Gothic cathedrals. 🎭 The Ancient Roman Theaters Known as Lugdunum in ancient times, Lyon was a major city of Gaul during the Roman Empire. Visiting here allows you to trace the city's evolution: from Roman foundations through the Middle Ages and Renaissance to modern-day Lyon. 🌆 Panoramas of the City From the top of Fourvière Hill, you can take in the entire landscape: the Saône River → Old Town → Rhône River → Presqu’île → and the city skyline stretching into the distance. It’s absolutely stunning on a clear day. ③ Presqu’île: Perfect for a Leisurely Stroll Suggested Route: Place Bellecour ↓ Rue de la République ↓ Place des Jacobins ↓ Rue Mercière ↓ Place des Terreaux ↓ Lyon Opera Lyon is a city designed for slow exploration and deep appreciation. It seamlessly blends Renaissance alleyways and secret passages with the grand vistas atop Fourvière Hill. From the history of Roman theaters and silk workers to the artistic treasures of the Museum of Fine Arts and the culinary delights of Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse—home to exquisite cheeses, seafood, charcuterie, and pastries—the city’s cultural heritage is rich and unique. In winter, the Festival of Lights, Christmas markets, and the scent of mulled wine bring a warm, romantic glow. Compared to the grandeur of Paris or the brightness of Nice, Lyon is a city that reveals itself one step at a time. It’s a place to discover the captivating intersection of French history, art, and daily life along its riverbanks, ancient streets, and dining tables.

First, the conclusion: Nanbo Izakaya is delicious and gets my full approval. If you like Kansai flavors and Japanese-style Western food, it's worth a visit 😋 📌 Latest on reservations and queuing They aren't accepting reservations after the 17th; it's walk-in only. Reservations before the 17th are also fully booked. If you want to eat here, you'll have to arrive early or be prepared to wait in line. I arrived at the restaurant at 7:00 PM on a weekday for a 4-person table. There were 4 groups ahead of me, and I waited for about 1 hour (one group was skipped). 🍴 Food review 🥬 Teppan cabbage steak The MVP of the night! I had this dish at a teppanyaki bistro in Kyoto many years ago and have never forgotten it. I'm so glad I can eat it in Shanghai now. Half a head of cabbage soaked in buttery goodness, grilled on the teppan with a charming charred aroma. The leaves are grilled until soft yet still retain a crunch—sweet, refreshing, and palate-cleansing. 🥞 Pork okonomiyaki It arrives sizzling on the teppan, topped with light, dancing bonito flakes. The mayo and Japanese sauce intertwine, and the filling is generous. The ratio of pickled red ginger is just right, making it more savory the more you chew. It's a hot, comforting, and authentic Kansai flavor. 🍋 Lemongrass three-cup chicken Breaking out of the traditional three-cup chicken mold, it incorporates a fresh lemongrass aroma. The chicken skin is coated in a glossy, savory sauce, and the meat is firm and tender. The basil aroma is rich, and the savory flavor has a hint of herbal sweetness that makes it addictive. 🍳 Homemade rich demi-glace hamburger steak A dish that looks like it came straight out of a manga. The handmade hamburger patty is juicy and plump with a solid meaty texture. Topped with a sunny-side-up egg with a runny yolk, you break it and the yolk slowly flows out, mixing with the house-made rich demi-glace. It's thick, mellow, and pure bliss when mixed together. 🐙 Burgundy-style octopus and mixed mushrooms The octopus is bouncy and crisp, paired with various mushrooms and sprinkled with crispy breadcrumbs. The aroma of slow-simmered olive oil mixed with a faint hint of Burgundy wine makes it savory without being greasy. It's a great appetizer to go with drinks. 🦐 Shrimp, perilla, and cheese Another Osaka specialty: kushikatsu! Even if you're full, you'll want to order one to satisfy your cravings. The large shrimp is wrapped in a perilla leaf and cheese, with a golden, crispy outer layer. When you bite into it, the shrimp is fresh and sweet, and the unique aroma of the perilla balances the creaminess of the cheese. 🥃 🍶 About the drinks 🍷 🍺

Everyone told me I had to brace myself for an overwhelming crowd of tourists hunting for industrial mustard pots along the busy commercial boulevards, so I prepared myself for a sanitized commercial trap. But the moment I slipped away from the main avenues into the quiet, cobblestone lanes of the antiquarian district at dawn, while the golden morning light brushed the glazed tile roofs and old stone mansions without a single engine roar in my ear, the true, elegant soul of Burgundy's historic capital hit me like a physical breath. Standing before those centuries-old ducal courtyards in absolute morning silence felt less like standard sightseeing and more like walking straight through a living medieval masterpiece. 🏰✨ . 📅 What I experienced · Escaping the Souvenir Shops: Following the famous carved stone owl along the side of Notre-Dame church to explore the protected old town far away from the midday tour groups. · Catching the Early Morning Light: Walking across the vast, sweeping flagstones of Place de la Libération at sunrise right in front of the grand Palace of the Dukes. · Exploring Inner Courtyards: Pushing open heavy wooden gates of aristocratic townhouses to discover hidden spiral stone staircases and arched Renaissance galleries. . 🏨 Where I stayed · I stayed in a charming, exposed-beam boutique room inside a historic building in the heart of the old center, waking up to the absolute quiet of traditional Burgundian nights. 🛏️☕ . 🍴 My culinary highlights · Burgundian gastronomy is a masterclass in rich, wine-infused comfort. I sat at a cozy neighborhood bistro and savored an authentic *œuf en meurette* (poached eggs drenched in a velvety red wine sauce with smoked bacon and mushrooms), followed by a taste of sharp, artisanal local mustard. 🍳🍷 . 📌 My tips for visiting · Skip the Mass-Market Shops: Seek out small, independent artisan mustard makers tucked down side streets to taste incredible regional varieties blended with local blackcurrant or spices. · Start Walking at Dawn: The entire historic center empties out completely at first light, offering perfect, crowd-free conditions to photograph the colorful patterned roofs. · Wear Supportive Footwear: Centuries-old stone paving slabs run throughout the historic core and will quickly tire out stiff shoes, so keep your favorite walking sneakers on. 📸🎒 . #Dijon #Burgundy #FranceTravel #IntimateTravel #HiddenGems #HistoricCity #TravelDeep #BucketList #ExploreDijon #TravelDiaries

When it comes to wine, people always favor the romance of France or the richness of Italy. But many don't know that at the southern foot of the Alps and along the Adriatic coast, the gentle and exquisite Central European treasure—Slovenia—hides a severely underrated golden wine belt. If autumn has a taste, it must be the sweet and intoxicating flavor of Slovenian vineyards... A thousand-year national heritage: A winemaking civilization etched into the national DNA As early as the Roman era, Slovenia began large-scale grape cultivation and winemaking, making it one of the birthplaces of Europe's long-standing wine civilization. Today, the winemaking heritage of this land is deeply ingrained in its blood: for every 7 Slovenians, 1 is deeply involved in grape cultivation, winery operations, or the winemaking industry. It is a truly national industry, participated in by everyone and passed down through generations. Though the country is small, it is gifted! Slovenia is located in the golden core belt of European grape cultivation, sharing the same latitude and terroir standards as Burgundy, France. It boasts 3 core production regions, 9 sub-regions, and nurtures 52 native and introduced grape varieties, with a richness of flavor systems far beyond imagination. In late summer and early autumn, grapes nourished by a full year of rain and dew hang heavy on the vines. In Slovenia, the harvest is never just a monotonous agricultural task; it is a national celebration, a folk festival that everyone rushes to join in the autumn. Grape harvesting: A national social carnival spanning a millennium In the Slovenian folk system, the grape harvest is an important autumn ritual second only to the New Year. It is a warm tradition of family reunions and neighborhood gatherings, flowing with the purest, down-to-earth Central European mountain atmosphere. Influenced by differences in north-south and maritime-continental climates, the national harvest season is layered and orderly, with a festive atmosphere permeating the entire autumn: Coastal wine region (Primorska): Late August to late September, grapes nourished by sea breezes ripen first, kicking off the early autumn harvest; Posavje and eastern Podravje regions: The continental climate is cooler, so the harvest time is postponed, fully maximizing the golden autumn atmosphere; Every harvest morning, as the morning light spills over the golden vineyards, the estate owners warmly welcome neighbors and visitors from afar, handing out pruning shears. There is no tedious labor here, only healing mountain gatherings: locals skillfully pick grapes while singing loudly, laughing, and joking. The melodious sound of accordions echoes through the valley, and the overlapping songs call out to each other—this is the autumn romance unique to Slovenia. National calling card: The time-honored celebration of the world's oldest grapevine As a national cultural and tourism symbol and a national treasure of Slovenia, a grapevine over 450 years old stands in Maribor’s Lent district. It is listed in the Guinness World Records as the oldest living grapevine in the world that still bears fruit. Over the centuries, it has weathered the baptism of war and the passage of time, witnessing the changes in Slovenia's landscape and the continuation of its civilization. It is the perfect symbol of the resilience and tenderness of this land. Every October, the highly anticipated Old Vine Festival kicks off grandly. The solemn, ritualistic harvest ceremony is a major official autumn event in Slovenia, attracting tourists from all over the world. The festival carnival lasts for more than a month, until St Martin’s Day festival on November 11, when the whole country celebrates the release of the new wine, completing the annual autumn ritual. Three major ace regions: Understanding the soul of Slovenian wine Relying on the diverse national conditions of the Alps, the Mediterranean, and the Karst landscape, Slovenia's three major wine regions have distinct styles, each with its own merits. Every fine wine is the ultimate epitome of its local land. Coastal wine region (Award-winning ace region) The coastal wine region (Primorska) is Slovenia's most well-known core region with the most international awards. Four wine roads—Brda, Vipava, Karst, and Istria—run through the entire area. Relying on the unique Karst limestone soil and warm Mediterranean breezes, it nurtures wines with ever-changing styles. There are mellow top-tier red wines, as well as the niche but popular rare orange wines and elegant, sweet white wines, suitable for all palates. Representative wines: Teran, Rebula, Malvazija, Refošk, Pinela Podravje region (A paradise for white wine) The Podravje region is the largest wine region in the country, with a history of grape cultivation dating back to the Roman era. Relying on the gentle soil and sufficient sunshine of the Drava Valley, the continental climate nurtures a large number of internationally high-quality, elegant white wines. This is the core production area for Slovenian sparkling wines and rare specialty wines. The national treasure, the 450-year-old grapevine, is rooted here, making it a veritable century-old winemaking holy land. Representative wines: Furmint, Italian Riesling, Ranina, Traminer, Blue Franconian Posavje region (A secret realm of intangible cultural heritage terroir) The Posavje region is the exclusive birthplace of the national Slovenian wine Cviček. It has the largest number of officially protected designation of origin wines in the country, and its flavor is highly recognizable as local. Hidden here is the unique pastoral scenery of Slovenia: characteristic vineyard cottages (Zidanice) are scattered across the mountains, where you can stay for an immersive pastoral experience; there are also naturally excavated underground radish wine cellars (Repnice), a unique winemaking secret realm created by the Karst landscape. Representative wines: Cviček, Metliška Črnina, Belokranjec, Bizeljčan In the harvest season, Slovenia is the ultimate secret realm for wine lovers, with many ways to understand the thousand-year-old wine culture: ▪️ Mountain cycling and hiking: In autumn, the vines are dyed in golden and crimson hues. Roaming along the mountain wine roads, every step is a view of healing autumn colors. ▪️ Visiting century-old wine cellars: Visit ancient family-run wine cellars and listen to winemakers tell stories of the thousand-year-old terroir and the national winemaking heritage. ▪️ Checking in at characteristic taverns: Visit local niche taverns and pair a glass of mellow, fragrant wine with authentic Slovenian food to unlock the authentic national flavor. This autumn, avoid the crowds and head to Slovenia. Chase the wind and harvest in the golden vineyards, encounter mellow fragrances in the thousand-year-old wine cellars, and drink in the autumn tenderness of this Central European secret realm~

This private banquet at Ming Kitchen began with a unique touch from the host. The proprietress, Xiaohua, brought out her family's treasured Lion Peak Longjing tea (8,000 RMB/jin) from the core production area this year, paired with a plate of soft mung bean cakes. The tea served as an introduction, gently setting the stage for this modern Zhejiang cuisine feast. Ming Kitchen, grounded in the exquisite techniques of traditional Zhejiang cuisine, breaks down the barriers between different culinary styles. Michelin-winning sommelier Dennis added sparkling wine aged on Burgundy lees and New Zealand old-vine white wine to complement the sweetness of the river delicacies, while also adding Premier Cru champagne from the Champagne region to enhance the rich aroma of roasted dishes. The entire meal incorporated freshwater and lake delicacies, as well as seasonal ingredients from the mountains and fields, showcasing the unique spirit of modern Zhejiang cuisine. Two main dishes, a sizzling culinary masterpiece, set the tone for the "CEO's Office Evening Banquet." A king crab weighing over eight pounds, sourced from Russian waters, is presented in an exquisite two-course meal: the crab meat is frozen and then lightly charred over charcoal. The first course, crab meat and fish cake jelly, is made from freshly shredded Russian king crab; the crab meat mixed with fish paste is clear and translucent, with a distinct, savory texture. The main course, charcoal-grilled king crab with butter sauce, is the absolute star. The butter sauce gently enhances the natural flavor of the seafood, while the plump, sweet crab meat is incredibly flavorful. Now is also the season when local crabs are at their peak, and a bowl of night-blooming jasmine and crab meat with fish balls serves as a soothing and gentle autumn treat. Hand-shredded river crab meat is incorporated into handmade fish balls; the freshly chopped fish balls are delicate, and the blanched night-blooming jasmine buds release a subtle floral fragrance. The broth is clear yet flavorful, the floral aroma complementing the natural flavors of the river and seafood, creating a warm and satisfying experience. Another dish, roast suckling pig with dried vegetables and honey sauce, is a perfect expression of Zhejiang's local flavor. Locally made dried plum vegetables are stuffed into the pig's cavity and roasted together. The key to making Xiaoshan handmade dried plum vegetables is the hand-shaping process, which involves three rounds of baking and sun-drying to lock in their unique rich, smoky, and sweet aroma. The unique freshness of the dried plum vegetables perfectly balances the rich fat of the suckling pig. Upon hearing about this meticulous preparation, food critic Xiao Kuan immediately suggested baking crispy dried plum vegetables to make a perfect appetizer, and the result was truly outstanding! The ingenious two-in-one approach is impressive: the crispy pig skin is paired with dried vegetable sauce, foie gras, and toast, creating a double crispness that collides with the fat, fermented aroma, and wheat fragrance; the remaining pig face is used for a special stir-fry, first braised to set its shape and then quickly stir-fried over high heat, resulting in a dish full of wok hei (wok aroma), with tender and juicy skin – the most heartwarming and comforting dish on the table. As a top-tier "Banpeng cuisine," a trip to the riverside is an essential part of the experience. The river eels caught in the Fuchun River, resembling the wild eels with green backs depicted in the "Illustrated Compendium of Marine Creatures," are incredibly fresh. Xiao Ming spent 59 minutes steaming them until the meat was tender and flavorful. Topped with Quzhou-style braised pork and steamed together, the river delicacies and cured meats complement each other, showcasing the authentic charm of ingredients from the rivers of Jiangnan. The eight appetizers served as a culinary prelude to the entire meal, reimagining familiar flavors with innovative twists. The vegetarian goose with dried bamboo shoots and the Jiangnan-style braised platter upheld Hangzhou traditions. The aged braising sauce, made with bamboo shoots wrapped in Fuyang's intangible cultural heritage bean curd skin and slow-cooked, offered a taste of "old Hangzhou." Among the cold dishes, the most eye-catching was the smoked triple-cured pork tartare: homemade braised pork from Ming Kitchen, Jinhua ham, and Guizhou cured pork—three flavors in one bite. The Hangzhou eggplant was cut and braised into a unique twist, infused with aged vinegar. The precise control of the sauce was crucial, resulting in a mellow and lingering vinegar aroma. Three refreshing appetizers—fresh lettuce with jellyfish, crisp cucumber with fresh walnuts, and passion fruit-stuffed lotus root—offer distinct layers of crunchy texture. Meanwhile, it's peak season for Yunnan mushrooms, and Xiaoming is brimming with enthusiasm. The white-brine braised chicken-of-the-woods mushroom with pork belly tips features Yunnan chicken-of-the-woods paired with crisp black-haired pork belly tips. The light braising sauce doesn't overpower the natural flavors of the ingredients, resulting in a rich mushroom aroma and a perfect balance of freshness and crunch. The mountain flavor is captured in the braised bamboo-fed chicken with wild boar. Wild boar air-shipped from Yunnan is paired with free-range bamboo-fed chicken from Lin'an. After thorough braising, the mushroom aroma permeates the firm chicken meat, a pot brimming with the gifts of autumn mountains. The caviar honeycomb stinky tofu is a stroke of genius. Local Fuyang stinky tofu is crafted using a special process to create a loose, honeycomb-like structure, filling the pores with a pungent aroma. Topped with caviar, the collision of ocean freshness and street food creates a striking contrast, a harmonious blend of elegance and accessibility. Several seasonal stir-fries each served their purpose: Sichuan-style stir-fried pork throat and kidney, the ingredients meticulously prepared to remove any unpleasant odors, stir-fried over high heat until the Sichuan peppercorns were thoroughly infused with numbing spiciness, resulting in a crisp and refreshing dish; salted egg yolk and water chestnut stuffed with old-fashioned winter melon, the old winter melon possessing a taro-like texture, soaked in the sandy aroma of salted egg yolk and the soft, glutinous texture of water chestnut; braised dried squid from the East China Sea with Lishui water bamboo shoots, the salty umami of the dried seafood infusing the sweetness of the water bamboo shoots, completing a fusion of land and sea flavors; and red amaranth simmered in shark fin soup, capturing the tenderest window of the year for red amaranth, simmered in a rich broth, resulting in a tender and incredibly fresh vegetable. In the latter half of the banquet, Hangzhou-style mixed noodles served as the highlight of the main course. Fresh noodles were quickly stir-fried over high heat, replicating the unique wok hei (wok aroma) of the old noodle shops in Wangjiangmen. Xiao Ming is also the young owner of "Tian Tian Xiao Pai" (Everyday Pork Ribs). The meticulously crafted "Chang-style Spring Rolls" recreate the traditional family banquet snacks of wealthy Hangzhou residents in bygone days. This is a favorite of the CEO, whose surname is "Chang." Filled with cabbage, pork belly, and pork cracklings, they are irresistibly fragrant. The dessert, Autumn Pear Mousse with Orange Sorbet and a Valrhona crust, offers layers of flavor—the gentle warmth of the pear and the crisp acidity of the orange—capturing the essence of autumn on the plate. I treated my friends to a 1979 Dwarf Oolong tea, its characteristic peach sweetness providing a smooth finish. This tea was also a contribution from Master Tea Master Lin Shaopeng and Director Zhou of Yixing Dragon Kiln. The true essence of culinary art is embodied in Ming Kitchen: rooted in local Zhejiang ingredients, yet expanding the possibilities of flavor. Ming Kitchen breathes new life into everyday dishes, creating a captivating new Zhejiang cuisine where mountains and sea meet.

If you are looking for a truly "living" medieval castle in Burgundy, Château de Berzé-le-Châtel is worth a special visit. It is not crowded with tourists like popular attractions. Instead, it offers a sense of solitude and tranquility standing atop the hill. 🏰 A fortress from the 10th century Built in 991 AD, this castle sits on a rocky promontory overlooking the Mâconnais vineyards and is one of the largest and best-preserved medieval fortifications remaining in southern Burgundy. Most impressive are its 13 towers and three concentric defensive walls, which progress layer by layer from the foot of the hill to the main keep. Upon entering the castle, you will pass a Carolingian-style chapel, a well that plunges 36 meters into the rock, and massive ramparts that once withstood the fire of the Hundred Years' War and the Wars of Religion. 🌳 French gardens and stunning panoramic views In stark contrast to the rugged fortifications are the French gardens inside the castle. Boxwood and yew trees are trimmed into chess piece shapes, dotted with statues and flower beds—this garden has received the official "Jardin Remarquable" (Remarkable Garden) certification. Climbing the battlements, the 360-degree panoramic view is the best reward: to the south are the rolling Burgundy hills and vineyards, and in the distance, you can see the Roche de Solutré. If you visit in spring, the fruit trees are in bloom, making the scenery even more moving. 📜 Practical visiting tips 1. Check opening hours: The castle is privately owned, and opening hours are limited, often requiring guided tours. Be sure to check the official website or call ahead to confirm before you leave to avoid a wasted trip. 2. Language: Tours are primarily in French, but English information sheets are usually provided. Some visitors have reported encountering guides with good English explanations. 3. Clothing advice: There is a steep walking path from the foot of the hill to the castle, and the interior ground is made of original stone slabs, so comfortable flat shoes are recommended. 4. Nearby attractions: You can also visit the chapel in Berzé-la-Ville at the foot of the hill, which houses Byzantine-style frescoes left by the 11th-century Cluny Abbey. 🚴‍♂️ Bonus nearby: Europe's longest greenway tunnel If you are a cycling enthusiast, the Voie Verte (Greenway) at the foot of the hill features the 1.6-kilometer-long Tunnel de Bois Clair, the longest greenway tunnel in Europe, connecting Berzé and Cluny for a very unique experience. In Berzé-le-Châtel, time seems to have stopped in the Middle Ages. This small village consists only of the castle, the church, and a few houses. The stone walls stand quietly amidst the sound of the wind and birds, presenting an unadorned, ancient, and authentic atmosphere.

I've been saving the Trip.com "Bourgogne-Franche-Comté High-end Hotel List" for so long, and I finally checked into the Best Western Plus✨ I never expected a hotel converted from a 19th-century building to be this amazing! I highly recommend all the girls traveling to Mâcon to book this place~ 🌟 Stay inside a Renaissance painting The hotel is right next to the Mâcon train station, and when you open the window, you see the sparkling Saône River. I love their perfect mix—the exterior walls have authentic medieval stone arches, but the rooms are equipped with smart toilets and rain showers. Classic lovers and tech fans will both be thrilled! 🍴 Insider tips · You must take a walk along the riverbank at 7 AM! Starting from the hotel's back door, you can enjoy the morning light of Saint-Vincent Cathedral all to yourself in 10 minutes🌅 · Attention, drivers! The underground parking aisle is really narrow (I tested it, and it's less than 2 meters wide). If you're driving a large car, I suggest parking in the free overnight spots on the opposite bank. PS: I only decided to book after seeing the actual photos on the Trip.com list, and upon arrival, I found it had even more quality than expected~ It would be perfect if all hotel lists could include notes like "historic building, no elevator"!

Let's start with the positives—there are actually a lot of perks to visiting France in October✨ Compared to July and August, it's much more comfortable. No scorching heat or walking around in the blazing sun. The daytime temperatures are just right, making it perfect for strolling through streets, visiting museums, or walking along the Seine. Plus, you'll perfectly avoid the massive summer crowds! You won't have to wait in line for hours at the Louvre, Versailles, or the Eiffel Tower. Popular attractions are much less crowded, so you won't have to worry about photobombers in every shot, which really elevates the travel experience. It's also one of the most cost-effective times of the year! The skyrocketing hotel rates and premium flight prices from the summer drop significantly by October. Dining, private car services, and attraction-related expenses all return to normal prices, making it much friendlier on your budget. The best part is the autumn scenery! The sycamore trees along the streets of Paris slowly turn yellow, and as the wind blows, the falling leaves create such a gentle, atmospheric vibe. The vineyards in Burgundy and the Loire Valley are in the middle of harvest season, with the hillsides bathed in warm autumn colors. The towns in the South of France shed the summer hustle and bustle, becoming quiet and healing—every photo you take looks high-quality. Now, for the main point! Why I don't prioritize recommending a trip during the October National Day holiday🙅‍♀️ It's all about the objective weather and jet lag issues, not because the scenery isn't good. First, the weather is really unstable! October is a transitional season in France. Sunny days are beautiful, but overcast, rainy, and windy days are the norm🌧️. It's common to have clear blue skies in the morning, only for a cold rain to suddenly roll in during the afternoon without warning. Plus, it's a cold, damp wind that a regular umbrella can't handle—they get blown inside out easily. The temperature difference between day and night is huge. Long sleeves are fine during the day, but you'll be shivering in the cold wind at night. Getting clear, crisp photos of the Eiffel Tower or panoramic views of the Seine is pure luck. If it's overcast for days, your chances of getting good photos are cut in half. Second, there's the jet lag and the switch to winter time🕒 France switches to winter time at the end of October, and the National Day holiday falls right in that transition period. The jet lag can easily mess up your sleep schedule, leaving you sleepy during the day and wide awake at night. Just as you get over the jet lag, you have to adjust again, which makes the whole trip exhausting. There's one more small point that's easy to overlook: It gets dark really early in October! It's basically pitch black by 5 or 6 PM, which significantly shortens your daylight sightseeing time. Since the National Day holiday isn't that long to begin with, you have less time to visit outdoor attractions and enjoy the scenery, making it easy to fall behind on your itinerary. To sum it up with some honest advice: France itself is truly impeccable—romantic, healing, and worth visiting for everyone. If your travel requirements include sunny days every day, consistent photo opportunities, and an itinerary that won't be disrupted by the weather, then I really don't recommend coming during the October National Day holiday. But if you aren't obsessed with perfect weather, love the gentle autumn atmosphere, want to avoid crowds, are looking for great value, and can handle the occasional rain, then October in France is absolutely a hidden gem of a time to travel! For those of you planning to go during the National Day holiday, pack a windbreaker and a sturdy, foldable umbrella, don't overpack your itinerary, and leave some buffer time, and you'll be all set~

🏰 History and legends The city's name means "new castle." It was founded in the 11th century, chartered in 1214, and was once ruled by Burgundy and Prussia before joining Switzerland as a republic in 1848. Walking through the old town, the 12th-century castle, the church, and the university founded in 1838 still tell stories from a thousand years ago! 📜 The old town is dotted with street fountains, making every photo look like a vintage masterpiece. We even found two dog sculptures sitting in front of a building—so cute! 🐶🐶 (Yes, this is the exact photo spot you see in our pictures!) ⌚️ Industry and art This is a major hub for the Swiss watchmaking industry! With a cluster of micro-technology and electronic research institutions, precision craftsmanship blends perfectly with the lakeside scenery. The lakeside vineyards also produce white wine, and the September harvest festival is a time for celebration! 🍇🍷 🌅 Must-visit experiences ▫️ Lake Neuchâtel: Breathtaking in both sun and rain, the blue waves and reflections of Western-style architecture are a perfect match. ▫️ Old Town stroll: From the castle to the church, every cobblestone holds a story. Don't forget to look for those two dog sculptures! 📸 ▫️ Wine or watches: Whether it's a winery or a watch workshop, there's always something to capture your heart. 💓 📌 Travel tips Address: French-speaking region of western Switzerland, about a 1.5-hour drive from Geneva (specific address not provided; we recommend navigating to "Neuchâtel") Weather: Summer is best, but rainy days also have a unique atmosphere. ☁️ Language: French-speaking region, but English is widely spoken.

An amazing experience with Virgil, who gave us a true Burgundy wine journey through a tasting session at OUR OFFICE BUILDING in PARIS, lol (such a fun, tailored event). I thoroughly enjoyed the horizontal comparison and blind tasting game Virgil organized for us. It was both educational and entertaining! Thank you, Virgil, for your excellent planning—everyone had an absolute blast! :)

The photos totally capture the jaw-dropping beauty of Château de Pierrefonds—a real-life fairytale castle in Pierrefonds, northern France (Address: Rue Viollet-le-Duc, 60350 Pierrefonds, France). Seriously, this place looks like it was ripped straight out of a fantasy movie! 📸✨ History Hits (aka Why It’s So Epic): Medieval Vibes: Built between 1393 and 1407 by Duke Louis I of Orléans (yep, the brother of King Charles VI!), Pierrefonds started off as a mega-strong fortress—think ultimate defense goals for all those medieval trade routes between Burgundy and Flanders. Fallen Glory: Fast-forward to 1617, the castle got wrecked by King Louis XIII’s royal squad (cheers, Cardinal Richelieu 😅). The towers were blown up, and the place was left as Insta-worthy ruins for more than 200 years. Glow-Up Era: Come 1857, Emperor Napoleon III was like, “Let’s make it iconic!” He called on Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, who remodeled the castle into the Neo-Gothic masterpiece we swoon over today. He didn’t just fix it, he made it a legendary palace—total main character energy! Movie Star Status: Pierrefonds doesn’t just look epic IRL—it’s a fave filming spot for movies and TV. Most famously, it became Camelot in the BBC’s Merlin series. Fancy a stroll where knights and wizards once “lived”? This is THE place. Know Before You Go: Address: Rue Viollet-le-Duc, 60350 Pierrefonds, France Opening Hours: Usually open 9:30 am to 6:00 pm (double-check on trip.com for seasonal updates 🕒) Final Vibe Check: Whether you’re a history geek, architecture fangirl, or just want those dreamy castle shots for your feed, Château de Pierrefonds is an absolute must-see. The turret views are next-level 🤩, and every corner is pure medieval magic.

Nine nights in July were spent in the Marie-Antoinette Suite at the Rosewood Hôtel de Crillon, capping off a five-week journey through top-tier hotels in France and Italy. This stay stands out as the most memorable. Upon arriving during a sweltering Paris heatwave, our suite—facing the serene internal courtyard—provided a cool, quiet escape completely detached from the bustling city. On the hottest afternoons, we found solace by simply retreating upstairs. For summer travelers, we highly recommend a courtyard-facing room, regardless of any pricing differences. Bastille Day celebrations were impeccably organized. The hotel arranged a viewing function for the parade, and, even last-minute, secured us a spot without making us feel like a burden. Additionally, their concierge team arranged dinner at Kinugawa with a premium view of the fireworks the evening prior. They also managed to get us an Hermès leather appointment—a notoriously difficult booking—with effortless professionalism as if it were routine. Having experienced all of Paris' Palace hotels, we can confidently say that this concierge team is the finest we've ever encountered. Their exceptional service radiates throughout the entire hotel: housekeeping adapted to our preferences within a day, and both reception and bar staff made us feel like longtime regulars from day one. Speaking of the bar, its wine list warrants special praise. The Burgundy selection is impressively deep, a feature we don't mention lightly. Rosewood Hôtel de Crillon has masterfully preserved its heritage, presenting it with an understated elegance rather than ostentation—a rare and commendable achievement. Without hesitation, this hotel is on our very short list of places we would eagerly return to.
