It was more like a short trip to the beach , early April 2022, it was not part of the plan but the beauty of the place took me by surprise and transformed the few hours spent there in a trip to remember :) I suggest Yellowecraig as a place to be seen for those who want to enjoy few hours of freedom away of the crowds 🤟

30 minutes from Edinburgh city centre is North Berwick, a popular get away for Scottish locals. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 North Berwick’s beaches are usually rather uncrowded but is a fantastic spot to do some dog watching 🐶🐾 Tantallon Castle (perched on the edge of a cliff) is also nearby, and offers amazing views of the sea. 🏰 Don’t forget to join a boat tour to the rocks near North Berwick, where you can see wild seals come by for a wee lounge. Edinburgh is one of those cities where you can spend days wandering cobbled streets, discovering hidden corners and getting lost in history. But if you have a car and a free day, I’d seriously recommend leaving the city behind. Within an hour or so, the landscape changes completely. Suddenly there are dramatic cliffs, ruined castles, enormous sculptures and peaceful lochs waiting beyond the city. Here are five places I’d put on the road-trip list. 1. St Abb’s Head Start with the wild coast. St Abb’s Head feels like Scotland turned the drama up to maximum. Huge cliffs drop towards the sea, seabirds fill the skies and walking trails wind across the rugged headland. On a clear day, the water can look almost impossibly blue. Take your time here. Walk towards the lighthouse, breathe in the sea air and find a viewpoint where you can simply watch the waves crashing below. It’s the kind of landscape that makes you feel very small. 2. Blackness Castle Then head towards the Firth of Forth. Blackness Castle sits dramatically on the shoreline, its thick stone walls and towers giving it the appearance of a medieval warship pointing into the water. It’s easy to see why it has become one of Scotland’s most atmospheric castles. Walk through the old rooms, climb the towers and look out across the Forth. History feels particularly close here. 3. The Kelpies Then comes something completely different. The Kelpies are enormous steel horse-head sculptures rising dramatically above the surrounding landscape. They are genuinely huge. Seeing them in person is completely different from seeing a photograph, especially around sunset when the changing light catches the steel. Stay until evening if you can. The sculptures illuminated against the darkening sky are spectacular. 4. Tantallon Castle Next, head back towards the coast. Tantallon Castle is the kind of ruin that looks like it was designed specifically for a movie. The remains sit dramatically on the edge of the cliffs, with Bass Rock rising from the sea directly offshore. Walk along the old walls, look through the ruined windows and imagine what life must have been like here centuries ago. The view alone is worth the journey. 5. Linlithgow Palace Finish somewhere quieter. Linlithgow Palace sits beside the beautiful waters of Linlithgow Loch, surrounded by green countryside. The palace is now an atmospheric ruin, but its scale gives you a real sense of how impressive it must once have been. Walk through the old halls, climb as high as you can and look across the loch. It’s peaceful, historic and wonderfully photogenic. And that’s the thing about travelling around Edinburgh. You don’t need to drive for hours to find extraordinary places. One direction takes you to wild cliffs and seabirds. Another leads to medieval castles. Another brings you face-to-face with enormous steel horses. Edinburgh is spectacular. But here’s a little secret: some of the most memorable places around the city aren’t actually in the city at all. Drive for half an hour or so and the scenery begins to change. Medieval ruins appear among green fields, dramatic coastlines open onto the North Sea and quiet hills stretch towards the horizon. If you have a spare day in Edinburgh, these four places are worth escaping the city for. 1. North Berwick Start by heading east towards the coast. North Berwick is the kind of seaside town that immediately makes you slow down. There’s a beautiful harbour, sandy beaches, little cafés and enormous views across the Firth of Forth. But the real star is Bass Rock, rising dramatically from the sea offshore. On a clear day, it looks almost like a giant piece of Scotland has been dropped into the water. Walk along the coast, explore the harbour and, if you have time, head towards nearby Tantallon Castle for one of the most dramatic coastal views in East Lothian. 2. Rosslyn Chapel Then head south towards something completely different. Rosslyn Chapel looks like it belongs in a fantasy novel. Built in the 15th century, the small stone chapel is covered with incredibly detailed carvings. Look closely and you’ll find animals, plants, symbols and mysterious details carved into the stone. The atmosphere inside is wonderfully atmospheric. Whether or not you believe the legends surrounding the chapel, there’s no denying that it feels like a place with secrets. 3. Cramond Island For something a little more adventurous, head towards Cramond. At low tide, a causeway stretches across the water towards Cramond Island, allowing you to walk across to explore the shoreline and remnants of its military history. But check the tide times carefully before going. The causeway disappears beneath the water when the tide comes in, and you definitely don’t want your relaxing day trip turning into an unexpected swim back to Edinburgh. When the conditions are right, though, it’s a brilliant little adventure. 4. Pentland Hills Finally, leave the coast behind and head into the hills. The Pentland Hills feel surprisingly wild considering how close they are to Edinburgh. Walking trails lead through open countryside, past reservoirs and across hills with sweeping views back towards the city. Go around sunset if you can. As the light fades across the hills, Edinburgh begins to appear in the distance, and you suddenly realise just how close you still are to the capital. That’s what makes these places so special. You don’t need to travel hours from Edinburgh to find adventure. Sometimes, all it takes is a short journey in the right direction. One day you’re exploring a historic capital. The next, you’re standing beside a Scottish coastline, walking across an island or looking over endless green hills. I took my mum on a delightful coach trip with Loch Lomond Travel to North Berwick and Dunbar. The pickup from Irvine was very convenient. Our first stop was North Berwick, where we explored some open shops, enjoyed a nice lunch, and then relaxed by the beach, watching the world go by. Later, we headed to Dunbar, wandered down to the harbor, and spent time watching the boats and the people. It was another fantastic day out, and both my mum and I look forward to many more trips with Loch Lomond Travel.

Had a wonderful day with the sun shining, followed by lunch at Bird Cafe Centre, offering an amazing view of The Bass Rock. Enjoyed a paddle in the water, a stroll through town shops, and some delicious ice cream while taking in the beautiful surroundings. Definitely recommend giving it a try.

Had a great little day trip to North Berwick and Dunbar. Got picked up in Motherwell and dropped off right by the seafront, which was perfect. Though we didn't explore much of Dunbar, we enjoyed a delicious dinner at the Black Agnes bistro pub.

Off the coast of eastern Scotland, in the waters of the Firth of Forth, stands Bass Rock — a solitary volcanic plug that rises steeply from the sea like a natural fortress. From a distance, Bass Rock appears almost unreal: a sheer dome of pale rock emerging from deep blue water, its surface often completely whitened by dense colonies of seabirds. It is one of the world’s most significant gannet colonies. Thousands upon thousands of northern gannets cover the rock during breeding season, turning its cliffs into a living, moving surface. From afar, the island looks like it is coated in snow; up close, it becomes a dense ecosystem of motion, sound, and flight. The rock itself is the remains of an ancient volcanic intrusion, shaped over millions of years by erosion and constant exposure to North Sea weather. Its steep sides and isolated position make it both visually striking and ecologically ideal for seabird nesting. Historically, Bass Rock has also been used as a fortress and prison, adding layers of human presence to an otherwise natural formation. Today, however, it is primarily a protected wildlife site. What defines Bass Rock most is its dual identity. The waves lapping against the shore are rhythmic and gentle, like a never-ending song. Walking on the beach, the fine sand is slightly cool underfoot. Seabirds circle overhead, occasionally landing on the damp, glistening rocks. In the distance, Bass Rock stands silently on the sea, white as a stone illuminated by light. The sky is often a pale gray-blue, like a watercolor painting scattered by the sea breeze. The town's streets are clean, the houses are softly colored, and flowers often hang from the window frames. The town isn't very big; I found that half a day was plenty of time to explore it leisurely on foot. It’s definitely a perfect addition to any Edinburgh trip as a lovely side excursion. Restaurant Recommendation: The Herringbone 🍽️💖 I highly recommend The Herringbone! Their salmon seafood chowder and salmon burger were absolutely delicious. Beyond the food, the service was exceptional. Climb up the hill in North Berwick is the best thing to do there. Although the wind is really strong and cannot even stand still. There are some horses on the trail which was soooo lovely!!! It took us about one and a half hour for return. Choose a pair of hiking boots that will be the best because there are some rocky area which might make your feet sore. There’s a tourist centre near the city centre so you can go there and check where to go!
