The Otsu Festival, one of Lake Biwa's three major festivals, takes place October 11th and 12th. From the nighttime array of lanterns to the daytime puppet performances on the floats, the sheer spectacle is truly breathtaking and worth experiencing! The Otsu Festival, established in the early Edo period and designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, is held every autumn around Tenson Shrine near Otsu Station. Thirteen large, two-story floats carry mechanical puppets, which stop at 20 locations along the parade for performances. The day before the main festival, there's a festival called "Yogumi" (Yoya Palace), where the puppets are removed from the floats and illuminated rows of lanterns are displayed throughout the streets. Although the Otsu Festival is relatively close to Kyoto, it's only a 50-minute Shinkansen ride from Nagoya Station! For those interested in traveling to Kansai, traveling via Chubu Centrair International Airport (Central Japan International Airport) is a great option to avoid the airport's crowdedness and surrounding traffic. Lake Biwa Ropeway (Biwako Valley / 滋賀ロープウェイ) This stop completely exceeded expectations — it was beautiful and definitely one of the highlights of the trip! 😍 As soon as you get on the ropeway, the temperature noticeably drops — just a few degrees, but enough to feel refreshing. As long as the sun isn’t out, it’s not too hot. The viewing platform at the top is incredibly open and wide — amazing views all around! ☀️⛰️ 🚠 There are three ropeways in total: The first one is paid — once you arrive at the top, there’s a café with a scenic deck right outside. Great photo spot 📸 Then follow the path to the right — you’ll reach the second ropeway, and further down is the third. The second and third ropeways are open chairlifts (feet dangling!), moving slowly — super fun and relaxing. No tickets required for these, just hop on. 🎢🪑 🎡 There’s even a small playground area at the base of the second lift — nothing too serious, just casual and fun to explore. ⚠️ Note: The third ropeway stops operating at 4:00 PM, and The second one finishes by 4:30 PM. If you miss it, you can still walk down — but better to keep an eye on the time! 📸 The last photo (image 4) was taken while riding the second chairlift back down — I didn’t have time to explore that area, but it looked fun too!

The combination of the nightscape and fireworks was absolutely stunning. In 2025, the event is scheduled for August 8th. #cherryblossom25 Catching the Tail End of Sakura Season with Serendipitous Beauty I missed the busiest part of cherry blossom season, but in return, I caught its peaceful, quiet tail end — a spontaneous journey filled with surprises and springtime magic. 🧺🌸 📍 Setagawa Park This beauty was completely unexpected — we only found it because the train service was suspended, and we had to walk to the next station. We were so taken by the riverside view that we came back again the next day to explore the opposite bank. Petals drifting on the wind, the river flowing gently beside us — it was a moment that lingered. 📍 Nakagawaguchi Park Another totally unplanned stop. As the train rolled through the streets, its windows brushed against cherry tree branches, and petals fluttered down like snow. We decided to get off on the spot and walk back — and stumbled into this quiet little park, where cherry blossoms bloomed softly under the sky. 📍 Lake Biwa Canal This historic waterway stretches from Ōtsu City in Shiga Prefecture all the way to Keage in Kyoto. Both sides of the canal are lined with cherry trees — in spring, they turn the path into a magical sakura tunnel. We followed the hillside trail up to Miidera Temple. Although we couldn’t get tickets for the famous moon-viewing platform, the views from the mountain were still absolutely worth the climb. 📍 Kaizu Ōsaki One of Lake Biwa’s most famous hidden spots — a 4km long sakura tunnel by the lake. You can rent a bike from JR Makino Station and ride along the blossom path. But we arrived too late and were politely declined by the staff 😅 So we walked instead — 4km round trip, stopping for photos the whole way. It was tiring, but we didn’t mind. We collapsed at the hotel that night, but our hearts were so full. #travel
