Kotor is probably one of those cities where in 3 days you manage both to soak up the atmosphere and not to wear yourself out rushing around. It's compact, scenic, with mountains and clear sea in a single frame. I'm sharing a day-by-day itinerary, tested on myself, a trip that became a surprise for my wife's birthday. One important thing about the season right away: we were there in March. That means empty, without the cruise crowds, but the serpentine road where people drive is unfortunately still closed, it opens at the end of May. Keep that in mind when planning your trip. In other words, if you want quiet and relatively moderate prices, then March is a great choice; if you want attractions and warmth, better go in summer. So… 📍 Day 1. The Old Town We started with the Old Town, which is also where we booked our hotel. It's the heart of Kotor, a medieval labyrinth of stone streets under UNESCO protection. It's easy to get lost here, but also easy enough to find your way again, since the area is fairly small. What's worth seeing: · St. Tryphon's Cathedral, 12th century, the city's main church · Cosy squares with the churches of St. Luke and St. Nicholas · The cat park by the North Gate Kotor is a city of cats in general, they're everywhere here, there are even cat houses and a museum. Our child sat with them for about 30 minutes, feeding and stroking them, they're very tame here. In the evening we walked along the waterfront by the bay. It's super romantic, peaceful, and that very place where time stands still. 📍 Day 2. The climb to St. John's Fortress The main highlight of the trip. The climb up the Ladder of Kotor, around 1,350 steps, up to the San Giovanni fortress. Not easy, but the views are worth it: all of Kotor from a bird's-eye view, the bay laid out below you. We made it harder for ourselves and started the climb from the other side, up the serpentine. It turned out later that this is the free route, while the steps are the paid one. The climb took about an hour, we barely stopped, maybe a couple of times for water. Even our 10-year-old found it relatively easy. It's best to head up an hour or hour and a half before sunset, to enjoy an incredibly beautiful sundown. After coming back down, your legs may ache and tremble a bit if you're not in shape. So it's better to spend the rest of the day in cafes and wandering the streets of the old town. 📍 Day 3. Perast and Tivat We headed out beyond Kotor, and it was worth it. Perast is a tiny, toy-like little town on the shore of the bay: stone houses, bell towers, a single waterfront and complete calm. We got there by taxi in 15 minutes. A magical place, steeped in serenity and the total absence of any cares at all. Tivat and Porto Montenegro are also worth visiting, and that's also 20 minutes by taxi. A luxury marina with yachts, expensive boutiques and restaurants won't leave you indifferent. The contrast with medieval Kotor is striking. Be sure to stroll along the waterfront, it's fairly long and winding and lets you look at this beautiful place from different angles. 💰 A few words on money and logistics Montenegro is fairly expensive, not only for tourists but also for those who live there, take it from someone who lived there for almost a year. But travel is exactly what's meant to put experiences first and leave you ready to pay for them. · A taxi to neighbouring towns – 20 euros · A good-level hotel – 80-150 euros a night for two · Restaurants – 10-12 euros average bill per person If you want to save on food, there's a big mall with a supermarket nearby, where you can stock up on fruit, water, vegetables, snacks, and everything you consume daily that doesn't need cooking. ✨ To sum up 3 days in Kotor is the perfect amount of time for a trip: you manage to see the city, climb the mountain, make a little excursion out to the bay, and simply have a good wander too. Montenegro 🇲🇪 The most underrated country in Europe has already been talked about enough. Originally, I just thought since I was here, I’d add Montenegro to the last three days of my Croatia trip. But the atmosphere of the bays and ancient towns here surprisingly rivals that of the South of France or Southern Italy. Montenegro, this treasure small country on the Adriatic coast, offers an experience far beyond expectations with its beauty of mountains, sea, and towns… Quick itinerary overview: Day 1️⃣ Dubrovnik → Kotor → Budva: Take a bus from Dubrovnik’s main bus station directly to Kotor (actual travel time is longer than official estimates due to traffic along the Montenegrin coast). Then take a taxi to the car rental point (there’s no ride-hailing app, so you need to message the taxi company via WhatsApp to call a taxi). Drive to Budva and check in. Day 2️⃣ Budva → Perast: In the morning, head to Sveti Stefan Island (navigate up the hill to the church). Return to Budva for lunch at Restoran Vista Vidikovac, whose terrace overlooks the entire old town of Budva. After lunch, walk from the hotel parking lot to the Ballet Dancer statue for photos. If time allows, explore Budva’s old town. In the afternoon, drive to Perast, take a detour up the mountain to Horizont Bar, which offers a spectacular panoramic view of Kotor Bay from a high vantage point (a drink purchase is required). Of course, our goal was to hit up as many gorgeous spots and towns as possible, both along the coast and high up in the mountains. · we spent a lot of time researching and managed to plan the trip absolutely PERFECTLY 😍 · 🔸Starting off, of course, with Kotor 🛥️ 2-3 days is plenty to explore the surroundings and take your time seeing everything! Hike to the top, try some traditional dishes, and soak in the vibes and beauty of the bay. Next up 🔸Budva, Sveti Stefan, Petrovac. We stayed in Petrovac for 2 days since it's way less touristy than the neighboring towns. 🔸Then onto some prime sunbathing spots: Bar, Susanj, and Ulcinj, which boasts tons of beaches right on the border with Albania. 2-3 days is enough for all of this (if you're planning an active trip). If you just want to lounge on the beach, you could stay longer. Just a heads up, these are definitely the more tourist-heavy spots ☺️ 🔸Moving on to the other side of the Bay of Kotor You should dedicate at least 3 days to Herceg Novi. I completely fell in love with this town—it’s quiet, peaceful, and stunning. Lots of places to walk around, spots to sunbathe, great cafes and restaurants, plus plenty of attractions nearby. From here, it's an easy trip to Perast, a tiny one-street town practically floating on the water. You can also head to Dobrota to grab some fresh farm-to-table mussels and oysters 🦪. Honestly, these spots are highly recommended, but they're best done as day trips 🔝 🔸Next stop - Mountainous Montenegro 🇲🇪 🏔️ We booked a place in Zabljak for 4 days to explore the area, and it turns out there’s so much to see! The drive from Herceg Novi takes about 4-6 hours, but it’s insanely scenic, so factor that into your plans 😃 On the way, make sure to swing by Podgorica to pick up some wine 🍷 (our friends love staying there since the airport is close, but there isn't really much else to do), and check out the Ostrog Monastery—ideally in the morning before the crowds hit. It's a gorgeous spot right where the mountains begin. 📍You absolutely have to make a pit stop nearby at the Panorama Lake Viewpoint with Cafe (the coffee ☕️ is just as amazing as the view), and the Piva Canyon viewpoint is another "wow" moment. Then, winding through tunnels and peaks, we made our way to the Sedlo Mountain Pass. We snapped a million photos and braced ourselves for a bit of a chill. Finally, here is the mountain town of Zabljak, where amazing local food, natural beauty, peace and quiet, crisp mountain air, and incredible hiking trails are waiting for you 🌲🐿️ 🥘 🔸Heading back to TIVAT via Kolasin - we stocked up on cheese and prosciutto for souvenirs at Vujisic prodavnica Zdrave hrane Kolašin, and then took a scenic, quiet drive down through Grebaje Valley back to the sea 🌊 Tivat really only needs 1-2 days max. Just enough time to stroll around the marina, check out the yachts, and unwind after the road trip. 📌Tips: Renting a car is an absolute must, ideally right from the airport, since a single taxi ride costs about the same as a full day's car rental (35-50 euros). Make sure to ask your hosts about the weather, especially in Zabljak. It might be a balmy +20°C at the coast but a freezing +4°C in the mountains. That's totally normal. Come prepared, or even the local liqueurs and hot soups won't save you 🥶🧣 🗺️ The route was breathtaking and filled with wonderful encounters with different people along the way.
