The Peters Palace is very nice to see and expereience as you walk through, but the Peterhof Gardens are spectacular. Smaller in scope than the vast, quad like acreage of Versailles, the Peterhof gardens are in a terraced like "Grand Cascade" design with stairs down to the famous Samson fountain with the gilded figures. The afternoon we were there in August, had light rain and the mist from the fountains perhaps reminded us of the nearness to the sea, and perhaps the cool inviting breezes that summer would offer. Recommended that you wander around this area to get a clear idea of Peter the Great's vision. Of technological interest is that none of the fountains rely on pumps, as the water is supplied from natural springs and collects in reservoirs in the Upper Garden.
