This historically significant archaeological site is now run by the Greek government. Delphi was considered 'the naval of the earth', by the ancient greeks. It is situated high above a deep valley and nestled below steep orange cliffs in a stunning position. The site has some iconic and nicely reconstructed buildings; The Temple of Apollo, The Ancient Theatre, The Stadium, and The Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia. One thing that motivated me to visit here were the tales about the Delphi Oracle or the High Priestess. In the Temple of Apollo she provided prophecies while she was in a trance. There were many different Oracles through the centuries and Delphi prosperity grew because of them. People from all over Greece come seeking answers to complex problems. The one thing I did not know about this ancient city before I visited was the Athletics Stadium. This is a huge site that could seat 7000 people and it is built high on the hill hidden behind a small ridge. Here they held Great athletic games. If you’re visiting Athens and have one free day, make it Delphi. Perched on the slopes of Mount Parnassus, Delphi was once considered the centre of the ancient world, where kings, philosophers, and ordinary people travelled to seek the wisdom of the Oracle of Apollo. Walking along the Sacred Way, past the Temple of Apollo and the ancient theatre, it’s easy to understand why this place inspired awe for centuries. Surrounded by mountains and olive groves, Delphi feels just as magical today. I’d highly recommend visiting both the archaeological site and the museum. The museum brings the ruins to life and is home to incredible treasures, including the famous Charioteer of Delphi. One sculpture that particularly stayed with me was Antinous, the remarkably handsome young companion of the Roman Emperor Hadrian. After Antinous tragically drowned in the Nile under mysterious circumstances, Hadrian commissioned statues of him across the Roman Empire. Seeing one of the finest surviving examples here in Delphi is both beautiful and deeply moving—a reminder that history isn’t just about empires, but also about love, loss, and remembrance. On your way back to Athens, don’t miss a stop in Arachova. This charming mountain village, with its stone houses, cosy cafés, and local shops, is the perfect contrast to the grandeur of Delphi. It’s a lovely place to stretch your legs, enjoy the mountain atmosphere, and perhaps pick up a few local treats before heading back to the city. Family! Greece is really more than just Santorini! Athens' millennia-old Acropolis, Meteora's Sky City, Delphi's Center of the World—each place carries the origins of Western civilization. This time, I stayed at a hotel where you can see the Acropolis just by opening the window. Watching the lights of the Parthenon at night, the feeling of crossing thousands of years is truly indescribable! · -- In-depth Acropolis Tour 🏛️ Parthenon The temple complex standing for 2,500 years is absolutely stunning! The 46 Doric columns are slightly curved at a 1:9 ratio to eliminate visual distortion, and the golden ratio precisely points to the original site of Athena’s statue. Standing under the massive stone columns, seeing the marks of over 2,000 years of weathering carved into the stone, the weight of history instantly quiets you. 🏛️ Erechtheion The six Caryatids are incredibly beautiful! The originals are kept in the Acropolis Museum; the ones on site are replicas, but you can still feel the wisdom of ancient Greek craftsmen. The north porch walls still preserve ancient Greek craftsmen’s carved graffiti, which is super interesting. 🏛️ Odeon of Herodes Atticus The holy place for summer concerts! The acoustics have yet to be surpassed by modern equipment. Standing at the center of the stage and speaking, even the last row can hear clearly—it's amazing. 🏛️ Acropolis Sunset Best viewed from Areopagus Hill at 7:30 PM in summer when the temples are gilded by the sunset. Climbing 300 stone steps to the top is required, but the view is absolutely worth it. The monastery stands atop giant rocks hundreds of meters high, surrounded by clouds, like a city in the sky. ☁️ Varlaam Monastery Still uses a winch basket to transport supplies, giving a thrilling experience of "sky monastery." You can see how monks haul supplies up—truly not easy. ☁️ Holy Trinity Monastery Filming location for "007: For Your Eyes Only"! Climb 140 steps to enter, and standing on the monastery’s viewing platform overlooking the entire Meteora rock formations is breathtaking. ☁️ St. Stephen’s Monastery The only nunnery without a mountain climb, with a garden overlooking the Pindus Mountains. Women must wear long skirts to enter; scarves are lent for free at the entrance. · -- Delphi Oracle Site 🔮 Temple of Apollo Ruins Inscribed with the maxim "Know Thyself," this is said to be the "Center of the World" designated by Zeus. Standing here overlooking the olive groves on the hills, you can feel a powerful magnetic field. 🔮 Ancient Theater With 35 rows of seats accommodating 5,000 people, it still hosts the Delphi Festival in summer. The acoustics are excellent; standing at the center of the stage, even the last row can hear you. 🔮 Delphi Museum The bronze charioteer’s eyes are inlaid with glass and have not faded for a thousand years—truly exquisite. Also, don’t miss the oval stone known as the "Navel of the World." 🔮 Castalian Spring A wishing well where locals say circling the spring clockwise three times grants wisdom. Standing in Delphi, it’s hard not to feel like time folds in on itself. Ancient stone paths wind up the mountainside, leading to one of the most important religious sites in ancient Greece. The Sanctuary of Apollo is one of the main landmarks here. What you see today are mostly the foundations and a few standing columns, but this was once the center of the sanctuary. People from all over the Greek world came here to consult the Oracle, who was believed to deliver messages from Apollo. It’s not overly grand compared to some other ruins, but its historical significance makes it worth spending time at. Not far from the main site is the Delphi Gymnasium, where athletes once trained for the Pythian Games. It was closed during my visit, so I could only view part of it from the outside, but you can still make out some of the structures and get a sense of its scale. I also made my way toward the Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia, but the Tholos area was unfortunately closed during my visit due to rock erosion above the site making it unsafe. Tholos of Athena Pronaia is one of the most iconic structures of ancient Delphi in Greece, located approximately 1 kilometer southeast of the Temple of Apollo within the Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia. Built around 380–370 BCE, it was designed by the architect Theodorus of Phocaea. The circular building has a diameter of 13.5 meters and features 20 slender Doric columns on the exterior, with Corinthian half-columns inside. The roof was adorned with lion-head water spouts. The frieze on the exterior includes 40 sculpted metopes depicting the Amazonomachy and Centauromachy, showcasing dynamic scenes in the Attic style. Today, only the foundation, three restored columns, and some remnants remain.
