崆峒山,Kong Tong Shan is located in the small Gansu city Pingliang 平凉。It is easy to get there by public transportion. Even most of Chinese people has no any idea about this place, foreign travelers almost never reach this location. But I would like to mention Kong Tong Shan 崆峒山 because this place is considered the land of Taoism origin. Yes, this is true. Exactly from Kong Tong Shan the Taoism religious and philosophy beliefs spread out and penetrated into other parts of China. There are several schools practicing qi kong and traditional medicine. Schools are not widely opened but accept new comers. This is hidden unexplored world, differing from that "well known" temple, where crowds of tourists arriving to watch the show. #triplocal

For example, Yunnan isn't just about Dali and Lijiang; Tengchong's volcanic wetlands will redefine your sense of relaxation. Liaoning isn't just about Dalian; Dandong's river breeze is more intoxicating than beer. These 8 cities are perfect for a weekend trip, and crucially, they haven't yet become tourist hotspots. 01 Baoshan | Yunnan For Tengchong, I recommend starting with Yunfeng Mountain. Arrive at the foot of the mountain before 8 am; there won't be any queues for the cable car, and you can reach the summit in half an hour. The Taoist temple at the top isn't very popular, but the view is incredibly wild, with the entire valley stretching out below you. When the clouds are low, it feels like you're walking on cotton. Don't rush down the mountain; there's a farmhouse restaurant halfway down where you can eat your fill of local chicken soup with wild vegetables for about 40 yuan per person. 🍜 In the afternoon, head to Heshun Ancient Town, which is much quieter than Lijiang Ancient Town. Don't go through the main street; instead, slip into the alleyway behind the gate. Old houses line the rice paddies, their cobblestones bathed in a warm golden light at dusk. The library is worth spending an hour at; the lotus pond is visible through the old windows. ⚠️ Some "jade shops" in town will try to solicit customers; don't believe their "insider prices," just look around. The next morning, go to Beihai Wetland. Remember to wear non-slip shoes; walking on the grass rafts feels like walking on a trampoline. The boatman will take you to deeper waters; water birds will startle you from your feet, making your heart skip a beat. In the afternoon, go to the volcano hot springs. Don't buy the combined ticket; just soaking in the hot springs is enough. The eggs boiled in the large boiling pot are 15 yuan a skewer, with a sulfurous smell—more unique than those sold in the city. 🚄 A taxi from Tengchong city to Yunfeng Mountain costs about 60 yuan. It's recommended to hire a car for the day; 300 yuan can cover the entire eastern route. 02 Qingyuan | Guangdong Qingyuan's most impressive attraction is the Lianzhou Underground River. Hidden inside a mountain, you first need to take a boat into the cave. The water is dark green, and a cool breeze hits you; in summer, you'll need a jacket. ⏰ After 2 PM, sunlight streams in from the cave entrance, giving the stalactites a golden edge, making it much more beautiful than in the morning. A walk around the cave takes about two hours. The steps are slippery, so hold the elderly and children's hands. Afterwards, don't rush off. The Lianzhou cabbage near the scenic area entrance is incredibly sweet; a plate costs 10 yuan at a roadside stall, and I ate two plates! ⚠️ It's recommended to book tickets a day in advance through the official WeChat account; buying them on-site often involves long queues. If you have half a day left, you can visit the nearby Huangchuan Three Gorges, taking a boat trip to see the karst peaks on both sides. The entire trip takes about an hour and is perfect for taking photos. 🚄 Driving from Qingyuan city to Lianzhou takes about two hours; it's a direct highway, and the road conditions are good. 03 Tangshan | Hebei Tangshan's most underrated feature isn't its industry, but the Eastern Qing Tombs. This mausoleum complex covers a vast area; don't expect to see it all in one day. Focus on the highlights: Be sure to visit the underground palace of Emperor Qianlong's Yuling Mausoleum—the dense white marble carvings are breathtaking. Empress Dowager Cixi's Dingdong Mausoleum boasts even more magnificent above-ground architecture, with its unique painted decorations featuring phoenixes above dragons. ⏰ It's recommended to enter as early as 8 AM when it opens. Tour groups don't arrive until 10 AM, giving you half an hour to enjoy some quiet, untouched scenery. In the afternoon, visit Nanhu Kailuan. This place has transformed industrial relics into a park; the old mine shafts and lake create surprisingly photogenic scenes. The Kailuan Museum within the scenic area offers underground exploration tours. Wearing a helmet, you descend into real tunnels hundreds of meters deep—the claustrophobic feeling is thrilling, but those with a fear of heights or claustrophobia shouldn't force themselves. ⚠️ The museum is closed on Mondays, so don't waste your time. 🍜 Afterwards, have a bowl of chess-piece sesame seed cakes at Tangshan Banquet. They're meat-filled, and a bite while they're hot is incredibly crispy. 04 Haibei Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture | Qinghai The beauty of the Qilian Mountains needs to be explored. Driving from Xining towards Qilian County, crossing the Dadongshu Mountain Pass at an altitude of 4120 meters, the snow-capped mountains outside the car window suddenly seem to burst into view, making you forget to breathe. The Heihe Grand Canyon is located west of the county town; there's no entrance fee. Walking along the river, the banks are lined with meadows and pine forests of Lenglongling, where wildflowers bloom in July and August, creating a purple carpet. 📍 Look for road signs; there's a viewing platform called "Ami Dongsuo." Turning up there offers a perfect spot to photograph both the snow-capped mountains and the valley. ⏰ Due to the high altitude, the light is most vibrant after 3 PM, but it's also windy, so remember to bring a fleece hat. ⚠️ Don't park haphazardly in the canyon; some grasslands belong to herders, and you'll have to pay for any damage. 🚄 A chartered car costs around 800 yuan per day. Since the round trip from Xining requires an early start, I recommend staying overnight in Qilian County.
