Who says summer budget travel means settling for less? We personally tested 8 cities where you can have a blast for around 1,000 yuan per person.
Summer budget travel in 8 cities, where you can have a blast for around 1,000 yuan per person. Don't assume budget travel means sleeping on a station bench. I've crunched the numbers for these 8 places: tickets, accommodation, food, and drinks—you can live quite comfortably on 200 yuan a day. The key is that they're less crowded and more wild than those popular influencer spots.
01 Ankang, Shaanxi
Ankang, nestled between the Qinling and Bashan mountains, is several degrees cooler than Xi'an in the summer. I arrived at Qiancenghe at 3:00 PM that day, and the sound of water reached my ears first, followed by a cool breeze on my face. Don't rush into the river; first, walk upstream along the boardwalk. When you reach the third waterfall, the splashing water, illuminated by the sun, creates tiny rainbows.
⚠️ The boardwalk is slippery. Wear non-slip shoes; don't try to go in flip-flops. The next morning, head to Fengyan Ancient Terraces. If you catch it before the clouds dissipate, the terraces look like shattered mirrors spread across the hillside.
📍 Navigate to the "Yanping Village" observation deck for the best view. Tickets combined are less than 100 yuan, and accommodation in town is 80 yuan a night, including breakfast.
🍜 The sour and spicy noodles from a roadside stall are 6 yuan a bowl, appetizing and much better than the 30-yuan boxed meals in scenic areas.
02 Changji Hui Autonomous Prefecture, Xinjiang
The essence of exploring Changji can be summed up in one word: vast. The wheat fields of Jiangbulake stretch from the foot of the mountain to the summit. When the wind blows, golden waves surge right to your feet.
⏰ Arrive before 8:00 AM when the light hits diagonally, making the wheat waves distinct and perfect for screen-saver-worthy photos. Don't have too high expectations for Wucaiwan; it's more like a rugged oil painting with red, yellow, and green layered together, ideal for drone aerial shots, but rather ordinary when viewed from the ground. For Tianshan Tianchi and Tianshan, I suggest choosing only one. If you're short on time, go to Tianchi. Take the shuttle bus to the top; the lake is an unreal blue.
🚄 Share a ride from Changji city center; it's about 50 yuan per person. Don't take the touts outside the scenic area; they charge double.
⚠️ The Xinjiang sun is no joke. Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours, and don't take off your hat and sunglasses.
03 Shijiazhuang, Hebei
Shijiazhuang may seem unremarkable, but it hides two gems nearby. Zhaozhou Bridge, the one you memorized in textbooks, truly stands out. When you stand on it, the bridge surface stones are polished smooth, showing over a thousand years of history. The ticket is 40 yuan. You can explore it in half an hour. Don't hire a guide; just looking at the carvings on the bridge railings is interesting enough. The other place, Xibaipo, I initially thought was just a typical red tourism site, but I was surprised by the lake and pine forest there.
📍 Take a long-distance bus from Shijiazhuang North Bus Station; it's a direct 1.5-hour ride, and the ticket is 20 yuan.
⚠️ It's closed on Mondays, so don't make a wasted trip. Afterward, eat a bowl of "daguo cai" (big pot dish) in town; it's 10 yuan and very filling. The vermicelli is stewed until soft, much more authentic than chain restaurants in city malls.
04 Zhangjiajie, Hunan
Zhangjiajie, don't buy the four-day pass right away; you won't be able to cover it all. My advice: only visit Wulingyuan Scenic Area. The ticket is valid for 4 days, but you only need one day to thoroughly explore Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain.
⏰ Enter the mountain at 7:00 AM. First, take the Bailong Elevator up to save 2 hours of climbing. The viewing platform at Hallelujah Mountain is as crowded as a subway during rush hour. Don't squeeze in; walk 50 meters to the side, and there's a small platform with an equally good view and no one to contend with. I recommend visiting Tianmen Mountain on the second day. If your stamina isn't up to it, don't force yourself to climb. The glass skywalk isn't that scary; what's truly scary is the 2-hour-plus wait in line. Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and Wulingyuan are connected, so don't buy duplicate tickets.
🍜 The "sanxiaguo" (three-pot dish) in Suoxiyu Town at the foot of the mountain is about 40 yuan per person. The cured meat and pork intestines stewed in one pot are so fragrant you won't want to leave.
05 Heyuan, Guangdong
Heyuan is Guangdong's own backyard garden, but it sees few outside tourists. Wanlv Lake Wind, a poetic name, actually refers to the northern shore of Wanlv Lake. The water quality is so good you can see 2 meters deep. I rented a small boat and rowed to the center of the lake, where it was so quiet that only the sound of the oars remained.
⏰ The light is softest after 4:00 PM, and the lake surface looks like a giant emerald.
⚠️ There are many mosquitoes by the lake, so mosquito repellent is a must, or you'll be covered in bites in 10 minutes. The ticket plus boat fee is 120 yuan, making it the most expensive part of this trip, but it's worth it. Hakka cuisine in the city, such as stuffed tofu and salt-baked chicken, is about 30 yuan per person, and you'll leave with a full belly.
🚄 Take a green-skin train from Guangzhou East Station; it's 2 hours and costs over 30 yuan, half the price of the high-speed rail.
06 Baoshan, Yunnan
Baoshan. Tengchong's fame is so great that Baoshan city center is often overlooked. But if you want to go to Tengchong, you must first pass through Baoshan. For Heshun Ancient Town, don't stay in the town itself; it's expensive and noisy. Stay in a guesthouse outside the town for 50 yuan a night, and it's a 10-minute walk into town.
⏰ At 7:00 AM, before the town wakes up, grandmas are washing clothes by the laundry pavilion, and the bluestone paths are bathed in warm morning light. Tengchong Yunfeng Mountain takes 2 hours to climb. The Taoist temple at the summit is very popular, and from there, you can see the entire valley. For Beihai Wetland, don't take the bamboo raft; walk along the boardwalk yourself, and you might see egrets flying up from the meadows. For Tengchong Volcanic Hot Sea Scenic Area, the Hot Sea is worth visiting. The sulfur smell from the Grand Rolling Pot is strong. Boil some hot spring eggs, 3 for 5 yuan; the yolks are tender and runny.
⚠️ The volcano crater is best viewed from a distance; climbing up reveals only a large pit, so don't waste your energy.
07 Fangchenggang, Guangxi
Fangchenggang is cleaner than Beihai and more fun than Dongxing. Along the coastal line of Fangchenggang, I rode an electric bike for 15 yuan an hour, and the wind made me want to sing. The rocks at Guaishitan (Strange Rock Beach) are dark, and the waves crash, splashing salty water onto your face. For Leshan Ancient Fishing Village, don't go during the day; go in the evening.
📍 Arrive at 5:30 PM. The tide recedes, revealing large mudflats where locals dig for sand worms, and the sunset dyes the entire village orange.
🍜 The seafood stalls in the fishing village offer flower crabs and mantis shrimp, freshly caught and cooked. It's about 50 yuan per person, and you'll eat until you're stuffed.
⚠️ Don't buy pearls at the scenic area entrance; they're likely fake. If you want to buy them, go to the city's pearl market and bargain for half price.
08 Nanjing, Jiangsu
Nanjing is a city suitable for extensive walking, but you need to know how to walk it. The Presidential Palace ticket is 35 yuan, with an hour-long queue and a 30-minute visit. I don't think it's worth it. Instead, go to the 1912 district opposite, where Republican-era buildings paired with plane trees make for better photos. For the Confucius Temple – Qinhuai River Scenic Belt, go at night when the lights are on and painted boats drift on the river. But don't take a boat; it's 80 yuan for only 20 minutes, which is poor value. I highly recommend Niushoushan Cultural Tourism Zone. The dome of the Foding Palace, with sunlight streaming through the gaps, is so beautiful it gives you goosebumps.
⏰ Go at 2:00 PM for the perfect light. Xuanwu Lake is free. Go in the evening and walk along the lake to Taicheng to see the Zifeng Tower and Ming City Wall in the same frame—this is the right way to experience Nanjing.
🍜 The duck blood vermicelli soup next to Kexiang Market is 12 yuan a bowl, with plenty of duck liver and intestines, much better than the 25-yuan versions in scenic areas.
I visited these 8 places, spending an average of 1,200 yuan per person, including food, accommodation, and transportation. What surprised me most were Ankang and Fangchenggang—one was cool, and the other offered seafood freedom. If you're short on time, just pick three or four places, but don't try to do too much. Spending 2 days in each place is much more comfortable than just passing through. Tell me in the comments, which one do you want to visit most?
