Memories from Tirana! It was beautfiul and fun. There are buses for 40 lek.

We only had 1 day in Tirana but omg it was breathtaking! We started off in Skanderbeg Square where there was a cool Roman Mosaic mural and drinking water taps. It was the day of the Tirana marathon so there was local entertainment on many streets. Our first stop was the House of Leaves. It is a gem, honestly, a super engaging museum with an immersive insight into the servailance state that the area had become and the effects it had on the locals. Subsequently we visited the orthodox church which was guilded in sublime decor throughout! After that we went to Bunk'Art 2. Honestly, after the House of Leaves, it felt underwhelming, and a bit of a tourist trap but it did give a real sense of what a larger scale inner city bunker would have felt like. We then went to try and find Tirana Castle, only to find out that it was an area of restaurants, and promptly went to Dajti. Upon reaching Dajti, we visited Bunk'Art 1, which was a breath of fresh air after our earlier disappointment. Bunk'Art 1 felt much more immersive into the juxtaposing lives of the commanders and the commoners in that time. We then scaled the mountain in the Dajti Express which had breathtaking views! There's plenty to do at the top, with a restaurant, zipline adventure, mini golf, hotel and more! It was a satisfying end to our day with a view of the sunset down the cable car and a 40min bus back to the city centre. I'm not gonna lie, I don't think there was anything else that we wanted to see in the area that would've warranted another day in the city but it's a good place to stay is you also want to visit Durres and the Cape of Rodon. #daytrip #travel

A less known Balkan country which in the past few years is a real tourist rising star. Tirana is the capital city and the main getaway to the hiden gems of the rest of Albania. The main square marks the city center. Everything is on a walking distance: the old mosque 🕌, the orthodox church ⛪, the catholic one are very close. Then you can explore a little bit further the Bunkart 1 and Djati cable car, wich offers you amazing view on the entire city. Basically, Albania was ruled for nearly 50 years by the communist dictator Enver Hoxha. During his rule he built an enormous bunker to protect himself and his government in case of war. You can now enter the five story bunker and walk through the underground rooms. Bunk Art tells the story of Albania’s communist past. The second one is located in the city center and is a museum in an actual bunker. The first one is a little far away, but can be easily accessed by the very frequent city bus to Porcelan. The entrance fee for both is 700 lek (as of February 2024). Albania is a country that has struggled to gain independence, having been dominated by Italy and Germany, being tormented by powerful countries, and being closed off to the outside world. Although they are not often seen in the capital Tirana, "bunkers" (pillowcases in Russian) with semicircular mushroom-shaped heads still remain in various parts of the country. The initial plan was for 221,143 bunkers, but the final figure was 173,371, which still works out to one for every 11 residents. Many of the structures are nuclear-proof, so they are still indestructible. Bunk'Art1 is a museum that uses underground tunnels for military purposes that were installed when the government visited North Korea. It has 106 rooms and can even hold special parliamentary sessions. When you visit the capital city of Tirana and want to learn about this aspect of Albania's history, you should not miss visiting Bunk Art 1 (actually, there is also Bunk Art 2, which is in the city but smaller). In Bunk Art 1, you will learn the details of the Communist regime before 1990, including a simulation of people's homes at that time. There are real offices and bedrooms of high-ranking executives at that time. The atmosphere may be a little scary because it is a real place.
