The Dapeng Fortress might be my favorite ancient town in Shenzhen. A leisurely walk of the whole Dapeng Fortress would take about 2 to 2.5 hours. The Dapeng Fortress was constructed during the Ming Dynasty in the 14th century. In 1394, the 27th year of the Hongwu Reign of Ming Dynasty, the authorities began constructing the Dapeng Fortress, which was intended to serve exclusively defense purposes against pirates, foreign enemies and resistance fighters. Together with the Nantou Ancient City in Nanshan, Shenzhen, the Dapeng Fortress was one of the 24 defense outposts along the mountain ridges of Lingnan (southern China). The Dapeng Fortress was especially important for coastal defense during the Qing Dynasty. In 1704, the 43rd year of the Kangxi Reign, the Qing Court turned the Dapeng Fortress into a naval base, which oversees the coastal defense of all of Shenzhen and Hong Kong. This role of the Dapeng Fortress would be very important during the Opium Wars of the 1800s. In 1839, General Lai Enxi, who was a native of Dapeng, sounded the canons that would signal the defense of Kowloon against British attacks. Thus the curtains were drawn for the Opium Wars. After Hong Kong Island was ceded to Britain in 1940 and before ceding Kowloon to the British in 1860, the Qing Court has constructed the Walled City of Kowloon for the purpose of defending Kowloon. According to research, there were more than 20 generals in the city during the Jiaqing and Daoguang periods of the Qing Dynasty. Today, Dapeng still preserves many generals' mansions, one of which is the "General's Mansion" of Liu Qilong, the famous admiral of the Fujian Navy. General Liu Qilong's Mansion is a typical courtyard building from the middle of the Qing Dynasty. The entire mansion is an irregular trapezoid. There is a stone plaque with the words "General's Mansion" on the door. The building area is 510 square meters. It is a must-visit place when visiting Dapeng.

The Dai Mansion was built in the late Qing Dynasty and covers an area of ​​about 300 square meters. It was once the former residence of Dai Zhuomin, the leader of the Guangdong-Hong Kong General Strike, and Dai Ji, the director-general of the radio station of the Dongjiang Column Headquarters. The Dai family was a prominent family in Dapeng City. They were both talented in literature and martial arts, and passed down the tradition of farming and studying. Daiwu Lane was named after them. Today, the Dai's Mansion has been transformed into a Red Mark Memorial Hall on the basis of protecting the original architectural structure. Here, friends can vividly experience the touching story of the Dai family through graphic materials, scene analogies, cultural relics exhibitions, and colorful murals.

Dapeng Fortress is a square military fort in Shenzhen. Many buildings date to the Qing Dynasty, with a few survivals from the Ming. The narrow cobbled streets and quaint stone houses are home to many cafés and small shops. A former grainery is home to a small museum about the Chinese navy; it has few displays and no English (free). You can go to the top of the East Gate (东门，Dōngmen) for a good view as well as a 3D map of the old town inside the gatehouse. Outside the old town there is also a temple (东山寺, Dongshansi) and a botanical garden (40 yuan), which we didn't visit this time. The fortress is not very big but there are many narrow streets so you can spend a couple of hours wandering around.
