Xi'an | The Millennium Ancient Temple in the Bustling City District
Xi'an | The Millennial Ancient Temple in the Bustling City Center
Unassumingly modest and remarkably free of charge, the over 1700-year-old Daxingshan Temple.
Preparation for the Visit:
In a city like Xi'an, renowned as the ancient capital of thirteen dynasties, the Daxingshan Temple is not particularly well-known. However, when one delves into the annals of history, it becomes apparent that the Daxingshan Temple is indeed a model of modesty.
Historical Background:
Established during the reign of Emperor Wu of the Jin Dynasty, between 265-289 AD, the Daxingshan Temple is a bona fide millennial ancient temple. During the Sui Dynasty, it was designated as a national temple, thus becoming a legitimate royal temple. The famous Tang Dynasty Esoteric Buddhism monk, Amoghavajra, presided over this temple, making it the ancestral home of one of the "Eight Schools of Buddhism," the Esoteric School.
Reasons for Recommendation:
Despite being located in the bustling city center of Xi'an, the Daxingshan Temple is not noisy. With few visitors, it retains the serene ambiance characteristic of Buddhist sanctuaries.
Location:
No. 55, Xingshan Temple West Street, Yanta District. It is relatively close to the Yongning Gate of the city wall.
Admission:
Free of charge. As a legitimate ancient temple, it is a must-visit that does not require an admission ticket.
Transportation:
Take Metro Line 2 or Line 3 to Xiaozhai and walk from there. It is relatively close to the Yongning Gate of the city wall. Alternatively, take a bus to Chang'an Interchange and walk from there.
Xi'an winter tour✅Da Xing Shan Temple❄️Wintersweet and ancient temple are a perfect match.
Winter has arrived, and my heart has been yearning for the wax plum blossoms at Daxingshan Temple. Upon hearing that the blossoms have bloomed, I hastily grabbed my camera and rushed over. I chose to visit on a weekday morning, and as soon as I entered the courtyard, I was greeted by a familiar, subtle fragrance. Unexpectedly, there were many visitors, all armed with various types of photography equipment, crowding around the two wax plum trees, ceaselessly capturing their beauty. It seems as though 99% of Xi'an's photographers have gathered here.
Why do photographers have such a fondness for this place?
The answer is, of course, its stunning scenery!
The stars of the show are two century-old wax plum trees, with the surrounding scenery equally enchanting and beautiful. Ancient temples, stone tablets, white pigeons... a casual snapshot here exudes the charm of a poetic painting.
The sparse shadows crisscross, and a faint fragrance wafts in the air.
Have you seen this winter scroll of Xi'an?

In spring, it is fitting to pray for blessings at the 1600-year-old cat temple for a cyber prayer session
🌿When people talk about tourist attractions in Xi'an, many visitors will first think of the Terracotta Warriors, Bell Tower, Big Wild Goose Pagoda, etc., but Daxingshan Temple is rarely mentioned😏
🌿In fact, the location of 'Daxingshan Temple' is very convenient, right near the 'Xiaozhai'🚇 subway station, not far from the Big Wild Goose Pagoda or the Small Wild Goose Pagoda. The area around 'Xiaozhai'🚇 subway station is the most bustling and lively place in Xi'an nowadays. Despite being in the busiest and most lively area of Xi'an, it is not very well-known, and not many tourists know about it, making it a rather 'low-key' tourist spot🥳.

🐱Besides its long history and thriving incense, Daxingshan Temple also has a cute nickname—'Cat Temple'. Daxingshan Temple feeds many little stray cats, adding a touch of cuteness to the originally solemn temple. Some even call Daxingshan Temple a 'large cat café'😋
🍃In addition to the beloved cats, the temple's pigeons and turtles🐢 are also very popular with the worshippers.
Xi'an City walk must check-in at Xingshan Temple
In the previous article, I mentioned the Daxingshan Temple, located in the Xiaozhai business district, it is a quiet place in the bustling city. The whole street is great for shopping, with markets, various coffee shops and food, dessert shops and Ji Sugar Water Shop (Xiaozhai Shop)'s coffee double skin milk is good, Hand Island Sushi (Xiaozhai Shop)'s various sushi are good, and the classic pizza from the shop next door, Florence·Classic Oven Pizza (Xiaozhai Shop) shop's tuna pizza...
Speaking of Daxingshan Temple, it is the ancestral home of Esoteric Buddhism, it seems to have been built in the Sui Dynasty, and has been renovated many times to its current appearance.
The first time I went in was in 2013 when I just started college, at that time it was everywhere in ruins, only two wax plum trees were blooming in winter, the fragrance was refreshing. Later I went there many times and found that the plants planted here are very interesting, wisteria in spring and summer (thousand-year-old tree), osmanthus in summer, red spider lily in early autumn, persimmon tree in deep autumn, and wax plum in winter. My mother has some Buddhist connections, she accidentally found this place, she said that she accidentally entered the monks' rest area, a slightly fat monk holding a potato and eggplant rice in his hand did not rush her when she was lost, but laughed and asked her if she had eaten, and invited her to go to the dining hall to eat. She told me that it's okay to go there more often, it can calm down.
So I developed a habit, every time I'm upset or don't know what to do, I go there.
The more I learned, the more I found that this temple is not simple, it has been insisting on translating scriptures for so many years, it is one of the few temples in the country with translation qualifications.
This time I went there, I specifically asked for a peace and health pendant for a friend who is not in good health, hoping to bless her.
Da Xing Shan Temple in Xi'an, Shaanxi
Da Xing Shan Temple, one of the 'Eight Sects of Buddhism' and the ancestral home of the 'Esoteric Sect', was a royal temple during the Sui and Tang dynasties and one of the three major translation sites in Chang'an. The 'Chang'an Records' Volume 7 states: 'The temple is grand and wide, the best in the capital.'
Da Xing Shan Temple was first built in the second year of Emperor Wu of Jin's reign (266 AD), originally named 'Zun Shan Temple', and has a history of over 1700 years, making it one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Xi'an. During the Kaihuang era of Emperor Wen of Sui, when Xi'an was expanded into Da Xing City, the temple occupied a block in Jing Shan Fang. It was named 'Da Xing Shan Temple' after the city and the block, and has retained this name ever since. During the Kaihuang era of the Sui Dynasty, Indian monks such as Dhana and Damo Jitu came to Chang'an and translated Buddhist scriptures at Da Xing Shan Temple. During the Kaiyuan era of the Tang Dynasty, Indian monks such as Shan Wuwei, Vajrabodhi, and Amoghavajra stayed at the temple, translated scriptures, established altars, and spread the Esoteric Sect. This was carried on by Yixing and Huiguo, forming a vast and profound treasure trove of Buddhist culture - Tangmi, which was later spread to Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia, etc. by Kukai and Saicho, and has had a wide and long-lasting influence. Da Xing Shan Temple has become a globally recognized ancestral home of Chinese Buddhism's Tangmi. During the Sui and Tang dynasties, Buddhism was prevalent in Chang'an. Monks from India came to Chang'an to preach and study, translating Buddhist scriptures and teaching the Esoteric Sect at the temple. Da Xing Shan Temple thus became one of the three major translation sites in Chang'an at the time, and a memorable place in the history of Sino-Indian cultural exchange. National leaders have accompanied Indian Prime Minister Modi on a visit here.
