Jing An Temple, Shanghai
#shanghaitrip
Jing'an Temple offers a harmonious blend of spirituality and modernity in the heart of Shanghai. The juxtaposition of the ancient temple with the surrounding urban landscape is intriguing. The temple's ornate architecture and beautifully adorned halls provide a glimpse into its rich history and significance as a place of worship.
The highlight, a large golden Buddha statue, is a striking centerpiece that commands reverence. The temple complex also features tranquil gardens that offer a peaceful respite from the city's buzz.

Jing’an Temple Day & Night
It is impossible to decide whether Shanghai’s Jing’an Temple is more beautiful at day or at night.
The golden roofs and the contrast its traditional Chinese details creates against the mega shopping malls in the background is as impressive as it is awkward.
One would expect tradition and innovation to occupy different spheres of the urban landscape, however, in Shanghai these two concepts are often deeply intertwined.
So it is, that is has become normal for passers-by to stare at Jing’an temple with indifference, it is so common to see it, standing strong in the center of the city that it could go almost unnoticed.
But it is always worth to stop for a moment, take a breath, look at this magnificent temple and rejoice the moment for a bit, before going on with the busy daily life of Shanghai.

Jing'An Temple is one of the most famous temples in Shanghai which is located at Nanjing West Road.
The temple has a history of more than 780 years, but it was moved and rebuild several times. The temple is still active and you can see many monks. There are three main halls, the Mahavira Hall, the Hall of Heavenly Kings and the Three Sage Hall. I recommend to stay one to two hours.

Highlights: Jing'an Temple is one of the most famous temples in Shanghai, and it is a must-visit if you ever travel to Shanghai. It is located in the Jing'an district, West downtown of Shanghai.
Jing'an temple is a Tangmi Buddhist temple. The first thing that really impressed me was the design and architecture of the temple, which was very beautiful and impressive with the backdrop of highrise buildings in Shanghai. It is like traditional blends in the cosmopolitan city.🥰
This temple is calm, and clean. It was a nice experience to be in this temple, to appreciate and enjoy the significant artwork here, including the well know and famous Hongwu bell, and the bronze Buddha. 😌
Opening hours: 7.30am to 5pm daily

Jing ‘an Temple Shanghai, China 🇨🇳
Jing ‘an Temple is iconic in the city of Shanghai. In a city full of glamour and luxury many look for spiritual growth as well as the temple offers a bit of serenity in the midst of the big city chaos Shanghai can be filled with.
The temple is easily reachable by subway train and is walkable. there are multiple levels and different floors for walking and talking. Inside the temple it is mostly quiet and filled with the sound of prayer.
Many can be seen giving offerings and confessing their worries and woes.
As a tourist, it is an easy day trip and locals can most surely give you directions.
The temple is easily in my opinion worth a visit.

Jing'an Temple in the predawn haze
It is the best season of the year to enjoy purple nights in Shanghai! Jing'an Temple is one of the most famous attractions here in Shanghai, but even if you are well familiar with it, you can take a chance to get acquainted with it from different perspective!
🏨🏦🏪 There are couple of high rise buildings surrounding the site of the temple, and they are kinda 'opened' to the public😅 The view from the above is absolutely amazing, and you can not only feel, but also see the diverse fabric of the city with different cultural, historic and aesthetical layers.
🚴🏻 One more thing, that you can enjoy, while diving deeper into the night city - is a bicycle ride along empty streets. It is an absolutely surreal experience to witness silent city which is usually overflowing with hustle and bustle.

German Christmas market
It’s always a wonderful experience going to the annual German Christmas market in Shanghai…it really sets the tone to Christmas, especially being far from home.
Apart from little ornaments and gift options being overpriced, the food is always different authentic and affordable. I’m only set to go for the food and mulled wine in recent years because in all honesty the other smaller things can be found on taobao waaaay cheaper(I was disappointed to look some of the things up and see the prices)!….
Anyways I would definitely recommend going to the market,it’s a great way to start off the festive season 🎄.#christmaslights

I've seen a lot of temples in my time, so I can tell you that Shanghai's Jing'an Temple is truly outstanding. This temple has a history of nearly two thousand years. The architecture is largely built in the Ming style, and the drum tower features a tenon-and-mortise structure, without a nail in sight. It is said that the deities here use their powers to grant good fortune to worshipers. Incidentally, you'll find plenty of Insta-famous photo backdrops here.
Want to know where we like to go for the best view of Jing’an Temple? There’s this cute and quirky cafe (that we can never remember the name of) across the road with the biggest balcony we’ve seen in a long time. That, my friends, is where you’ll find an amazing view of the temple alongside some ok coffee 😂 ⠀

Michaela (@uncoveringcities) shanghai is a great place, for night life
as long as it's not that humid
Jing’an Temple is Shanghai stands tall among various shopping plazas and narrow scenic walking streets. The temple has an air of commercialisation, with its outskirts lined with fancy diamond and jewellery shops, it’s hard not to feel as if it is a very Shanghai type of temple.

Jing'an Temple only lights up on Friday and Saturday nights at 18:00;
Standing on the overpass is a great spot for taking photos. I haven't been inside yet, but it's truly beautiful to look at from the outside under the night lights. I once stood on the bridge for half an hour, marveling at such elegance;
📍Jing'an Park:
Coming here in the morning, you can see the beauty of retired life! So envious! I really like to watch retired life because I don't know if I will have the chance to retire (dddd just kidding)

Strolling leisurely around Jing'an Temple
On Sunday, taking advantage of the end of spring, I wandered around the vicinity of Jing'an Temple.
First, I came out of Exit 12 of Jing'an Temple subway station and walked along Huashan Road to the time-honored brand pavilion at 263 Huashan Road, which used to be the office of the Bright Food Group, and even earlier, it can be traced back to the private residence of the British man Draymond in 1899.
After visiting 263, I walked to the nearby Jing'an Park. In the bustling Jing'an Temple business district, this is a precious piece of greenery where one can stroll, exercise, read books..., and enjoy the tranquil natural atmosphere. Today, there are several educated youth song and dance troupes performing. Exiting the park, there is the 'Fengsheng Li·Jing'an Temple Square', Reel Department Store, and Kerry Centre not far away, and I visited Mao Zedong's former residence from 1920. Crossing the road and returning to Jiuguang Department Store next to Jing'an Temple, the lively crowd and the children's performances made it hard to leave. After having enough of the mall, I came out and arrived at the former residence of Liu Changsheng, which is now the Exhibition Hall of the History of the Underground Struggle of the Communist Party of China in Shanghai... Taking it easy, I circled around Jing'an Temple, admiring the beautiful old villas, browsing the magnificent commercial centers, enjoying performances by the elderly and children in the quiet park and the bustling mall, visiting the red historical sites..., it was truly a fulfilling and enjoyable day.
Shanghainese will tell you that the landmarks of Shanghai are not just the Bund
Yuyuan Road is not long, but I only found out today that despite its short length, it has a long history...
It turns out it has a history of over a hundred years...
It has its own unique garden passageway, lined with coffee shops and Western restaurants on one side, and a variety of clothing stores, original craft shops on the other...
It borders Jiangsu Road at one end, and the Zhongshan Park subway station, and leads to Jing'an Temple and Tongren Road at the other...
This small road, which finds tranquility amidst the hustle and bustle, is truly very Shanghai!

Shanghai Metro Direct | Jing'an Temple "A Millennium Foundation Supports the Ancient Temple in the Bustling City"
⏳Origin of the Name: Jing'an Temple is not only a famous Buddhist temple in China, but also a cultural landscape that combines Buddhism and folk customs. It was founded in the tenth year of Chiwu during the Wu Kingdom of the Three Kingdoms period (247 AD), and after renovations through the dynasties, it was called Yongtai Zen Temple during the Tang Dynasty, and Jing'an Temple from the Northern Song Dynasty onwards.
🌟Overall Layout: The architectural style combines traditional gates, halls, and corridors. The overall layout consists of a front temple and a rear pagoda, with the Mahavira Hall, Heavenly King Hall, and Hall of Three Saints being the main buildings of the temple. The entire structure is built from south to north along the central axis, with the bell tower, drum tower, Mahavira Hall, and Dharma Hall among the buildings distributed along this axis. The overall architectural style follows the Song Dynasty construction techniques, with roof ridge beasts, overhanging eaves, and dougong brackets commonly seen in the architecture.
👍Most Recommended: The Dharma banners, mountain gate, bell tower, drum tower, Fu Hui treasure cauldron, Mahavira Hall, east and west wing rooms, Jing'an Pagoda, and Dharma Hall are all must-see attractions!

Tulip Viewing in the Magic City | Tulips at Jing'an Temple started blooming in February!
February in the Magic City already feels like spring, and following the popularity of the tulips along the Yangpu Riverside, the tulips at Jing'an Temple have also begun to bloom. The photo was taken on 2024/2/14, and on that day, some of the 🌷 were still budding. After a few days of rain, I estimate they are now in full bloom. If you want to take a grand photo of the tulips with Jing'an Temple in the background, you better hurry!
Actually, the night view of Jing'an Temple is even more enchanting. With the brilliant lighting effects on West Nanjing Road, you can capture a different flavor of tulips. Jing'an Temple, Jiuguang Department Store, and the huge billboards at the intersection can all serve as excellent photographic backdrops~

The oldest and most famous temple in Shanghai

Jing'an Temple is one of the most famous temples in Shanghai which is located at West Nanjing Road, Jing'an District, the flourishing downtown area of Shanghai. In 1983, it was put on the list of key national protection.
Jing'an Temple is a good place to escape the hustle and bustle of crowds in downtown Shanghai. In the meantime, you can enjoy the marvellous painting and calligraphy by Yangzhou's Eight Eccentric Painters in the Exhibition Hall of Buddhist Relics. An important display of this temple is the bronze bell which was made in the Ming Dynasy.

In spring, it is appropriate to pray for blessings at the Jing'an Temple, which ferries the wealthy
I have passed by many times without ever entering. Although the area is not large, it is beautiful and luxurious, resplendent with gold. Especially on a sunny day, it shines brilliantly under the sun.
⛩️ Temple: Jing'an Temple
🚊 Transport: Exit 1 of Jing'an Temple Station on lines 2/7
⏰ Time: 7:30—18:00
🎟️ Ticket: ¥50 reservation for incense and flower coupon
The ticket, oh no, I mean the incense and flower coupon, is so expensive, and there are no discounts, the same price for everyone. Fortunately, just looking at this magnificent building from the outside is also satisfying. And the view from afar is even more photogenic!
The surrounding area is also great for strolling: there are countless malls, parks, restaurants, etc. It feels like the Buddhist temple is no longer serene, but it is still very convenient for people to go and pray for blessings.
Shanghai!
During the day, Shanghai also has many places that are great for taking photos and checking in!
Wukang Road is very suitable for strolling around for free! Its architectural style attracts many people to come and check in.
Jing'an Temple requires an admission fee, but taking photos outside is also nice. The temple blends with modern buildings.
The Oriental Pearl is a landmark that must be visited, and you can also visit the nearby Disney flagship store.
1933 Old Millfun has an industrial style and is also a great place for photography, full of industrial vibes, where you can take some cool photos.
Riding a bike on the roads of Shanghai is also quite nice, the trees on both sides of the road should have been pruned and the shading effect is really good
