While the city may be famous for being the centre of Sino-Japanese war and Civil war, it is actually home to many beautiful natural landscapes. If you wish to visit areas less touristy, then Yan'an should definitely be on your itinerary! One can book a car or join a 3-day local tour. These tours would cover the Ganquan Grand Canyon, Wave Valley, Qiankun Bay and the Yellow River Hukou Waterfall. The Yangjialing Revolutionary Site is the former site of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. It is located in the northwest of Yan'an City from November 1938 to March 1947. Mao Zedong and other central leaders and the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China live here. One old cave dwelling site and an old photograph are in the same place. What stayed with us most was the quiet harmony of nature, tradition, and simple design. Beyond the flower valley lies a serene lake, cultural highlights like the Mulan gravesite and Cuifu shrine, and minimal infrastructure that invites presence instead of spectacle. There were just enough walking trails and observation points to guide exploration without crowding the landscape. As we drifted on a small boat across the lake, framed by flowering hillsides, it felt like a place both resilient and gently celebrated.
